She came to him at his lowest point. The voice of an angel, a whisper in the dark. She’s the only thing that gets Nathan Kelly through his captivity, the endless days of torture and the fear that he’ll never return to his family. With her help, he’s able to escape. But he isn’t truly free, because now she’s disappeared and he’s left with an all-consuming emptiness as he struggles to pick up the pieces of his life. Did he imagine his angel? Or is she out there, needing his help as he’d once needed hers?
Now he rushes to save her before it’s too late
Shea has been on the run from people who will stop at nothing to exploit her unique abilities. She never wanted to drag Nathan, who’d already suffered so much, into danger, but she doesn’t have a choice so she reaches out to him for help. Finally face-to-face after having already formed a soul-deep bond in hell, their emotional connection is even more powerful than their telepathic one. Nathan refuses to consider ever letting her go again, but she worries they can never have a life free of the dangers that dog her every step. He’ll protect her with his every breath, but can he convince her that they are meant to face these threats together?
Maya Banks is the #1 New York Times, #1 USA Today and international bestselling author of over 50 novels. A wife and mother of three, she lives in Texas.
This book had an awesome beginning, holding me in it's grip from the start. Youngest Kelly brother Nathan is being held captive somewhere in Afghanistan by (probably) the Taliban. On the verge of giving up after being relentlessly tortured day after day, a voice comes to him out of the dark, urging him not to give up.
You aren't alone. I'm here.
You mustn't give up. I'm with you. I won't leave you.
Is he hallucinating? Losing his mind? Is it the voice of an angel? Or can the voice Nathan hears in his head offering him comfort, strength, and hope be real?
Wonderful beginning by MB. Loved the whole idea of the mental telepathy connecting Nathan and the brave, running-for-her-life heroine of this book, Shea. What Shea did for Nathan in the opening chapters (no spoilers) cemented my feelings for her--I wanted this girl to get her HEA. And when Nathan reciprocated when he finally was able to reconnect with Shea after being stateside for months, he solidified his hero status in my eyes.
Nathan...
Shea...
Yep, this was a lovely romance between two soul mates who were destined to be together. Shea and her older sister Grace are on the run from some baddies who want to use the sisters mental telepathy/healing powers 'for the good of the country' but forget they're dealing with human beings, not lab rats. Nathan is determined to help Shea by protecting her with all his resources (and the resources of the Kelly family--including all his big, bad, alpha hero brothers) and helping her stop whoever is determined to nab her and bring her back to experiment on her. Is Nathan just doing Shea a favor after what she did for him? Or is there truly a deep bond that was forged between them, one that no one or no circumstances can break?
I enjoyed the instant connection that Shea and Nathan had. The opening chapters where Nathan was held prisoner while Shea tried to help him were a little difficult to read (broke my heart a little with what they both went through) but hard to break away from. These chapters were filled with emotion and set the whole tone for the rest of the book. You'll want to see Shea and Nathan meet in person, you'll want to see if there will be the same connection when they physically meet, and you'll root, root, root for them to have a future together. Of course I loved when Nathan's brothers all got involved with helping Shea, vowing to protect her as if she was one of their own, and I enjoyed the brotherly camaraderie and put-downs (even though they were dealing with some very serious stuff here). Don't want to give anything away here, but I also enjoyed the connection Shea had with Joe (Nathan's twin) and Swanny (Nathan's Army buddy). I also enjoyed how the book came full circle, with the highly suspenseful final chapters dealing with Nathan (and his family) helping Shea past some stuff very similar to what Nathan went through. Very gripping and hard to read.
The love scenes? Very sensuous, very loving, and hot. No complaints there. You knew right away that what these two felt was l-o-v-e, not just lust.
Any complaints? Well, Maya Banks is still rather stingy on her descriptions, outside of the basics. We know Nathan has dark hair and dark eyes, and is rather lean (after his captivity). I don't have a real fix on his age (I'm guessing mid 20's) or any other physical characteristics. Same with Shea. We know she's blonde, petite, and blue-eyed. That's about it. And she snuggles into Nathan's chest a lot, so I'm guessing she might be up to a foot shorter than him? Age? Not sure.:(
Also, what's with the saying "having a kitten"? All the Kelly brothers (in all the books) say this at one time or another (usually when referring to their mother). I've heard of "having a cow", but a "kitten"? Somehow that just doesn't sound right coming out of those alpha Kelly mouths...:)
But all in all, a really solid book from a very solid series. I love all the Kelly brothers (still can't wait for Donovan's book), love reading about them and the whole family dynamic, and I'm getting interested in the supporting characters too (P.J., Cole, Rio, Steele and now Swanny--hope he gets a book!) Maya Banks did not disappoint with this one--a nearly perfect 4 1/2 stars!
This whole book made me so frustrated! If I would describe it with three words, those words would be weird, stressful and painful.
Nathan is captured in Afghanistan, and tortured daily. When he thinks he cannot take it anymore, an angel reaches out to him. Or so he thought. Shea can take on pain telepathically, and speak to Nathan. She helps him through it, and helps him escape. But someone is after Shea and her sister Grace for their abilities.
This is romantic suspense with a paranormal element. I liked all three previous books, and there is nothing paranormal going on in them. Bringing this in felt weird. Not to mention the whole back story with government experimenting, and the Cold War. It could have been great, but even I could not go so far off the reality-scale.
And the constant stress. It was like this: someone was captured, someone was tortured, a lot of pain, someone was running, someone was captured, a lot of pain, someone was rescued, some sex, someone was captured, more pain, more stress and then not even a satisfying HEA!
And on top of it, I could not feel their physical attraction. They have this intense soul mate thing going on, but I could not buy the physical side. The sex put me off. She is rescued from torture, her sister is missing, Nathan is almost a stranger but hey of course she feels comfortable with having unprotected sex.
I kept reading, so that was good but there was no breather. No moment of calm. On top of it all, it ended with a huge cliffhanger!
On the upside, there was some incredibly beautiful scenery.
Thanks Shosho and Rebecca for reading it with me! Always a pleasure!
Very disappointing that Maya Banks decided to introduce paranormal elements to this series. It’s completely messed up the world she established in the other books.
This one read like some sort of homage to Christine Feehan’s books. The characters are standard Banks – alpha male you wouldn’t kick out of bed, and slightly wimpy girl who all the males dote on. It’s fun, but also a tad repetitive.
The cheese factor here was so bad too.
There were some good moments – this is an author who writes very romantic romance – but then there was all the extraneous family stuff that interferes with the suspense. I didn’t sign up for paranormal with KGI, and it’s a pity Banks chose to go in this direction.
With all of the madness, this weekend I want to kick it off with something easy, sappy romance. I am so glad I found Miss Banks.
I always can count on her book for something sexy, hot, sappy. KGI series have a suspense and in Whispers in the Dark, have paranormal in it.
Miss Banks deliveres. The book is indeed sappy, OTT cheesy and hot steaming sexy. Just the right book to release all of this madness surrounding the Election day.
This story was worth the 11 month wait. Great romantic suspense with a little twist of paranormal. But let me say that it just a twist that adds to the story. Don't be alarmed if you don't normally ready PNR.
Nathan was s hero to die for. I loved him every page of this book. Shea is a strong heroine worthy of our hero.
Loved this one and I really enjoyed the paranormal element ;) Shea kicked ass and Nathan was a awesome hero. Also extra points for Nathans twin Joe and army buddie Swanny....loved them.
Strange to notice, but I don’t understand why Maya Banks writes so many love scenes with her heroines going to work on the heroes with their mouths, but the heroes almost never return the favour. Sometimes I feel like the scenes are written by men – but then all the corny family scenes tell me this author is definitely a woman. Men don’t talk or act the way she writes!
I had trouble staying interested until the end. Though I anticipated racing through this one, it took me days to read and did not hold my interest.
If I want paranormal romance I’d go looking for it. I wanted romantic suspense without the magic. I did not get that here.
Even after I got over just HOW paranormal the author has made this series – it used to be completely normal romantic suspense and now it is INSANE with the superpowers and stuff – I still didn’t enjoy it.
The book really starts to drag by the halfway mark, and I started skipping the huge chunks of telepathic communication that filled pages at a time.
Nathan and Shea are no different to any other characters Maya Banks has created. They are interchangeable with the characters from the other three books in the series.
The over the top expressions of love between the family members is so cheesy. Not everyone has to love everyone else nonstop! The male characters might swear sometimes, but they still talk like they’re written by a woman. They don’t come across as real men in any way!
I cannot say this is a series I will read any further into. It brings nothing new to the table and there just isn’t anything here to hold my interest.
Whispers in the Dark by Maya Banks 4th book in the KGI series. Paranormal (psychic healing) romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better is you know some of the series concepts. Nathan Kelly is a captive being tortured for information when he hears a voice assuring him that he’s not alone. She telepathically helps take his pain and keep his sanity. After he is able to escape, Nathan tracks his helper down and ends up helping Shea find her sister and save them both from a dangerous situation.
Intense and a bit violent, but overall a great romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed the drama of it all. I started with book 4 because it was a bookclub read and feel like I would have appreciated the clandestine organization more if I’d read one or more of the earlier KGI books. I will go back and read them at some point. The whole psychic thing has always been a favorite troupe of mine. Maybe close enough to reality that it could exist?
This was a good KGI installment with one of the twins in the army Nathan Kelly as the hero. His tour was about to end when he went MIA and was captured and Nathan is almost thinking of giving up when he hears a voice in his head telling him to be strong and that he will get through it, the voice is of the heroine Shea who has special abilities and is on the run ever since her parents were murdered.
Shea takes away Nathan's pain and even contacts his brothers for him, staying a voice all the time and not telling Nathan of her circumstances except that she doesn't know who is after her or her sister Grace and that they want to exploit them. Nathan is rescued and Shea disappears and Nathan even doubts she exits and even six months later, his family worries about him, his ordeal has changed him and then Shea contacts him after she is taken captive and has escaped.
For the romance part these two shared an instant connection and love is something that comes naturally, as usual the Kelly family was great and I am looking forward to reading about Grace.
Took a while for me to get into this one and feel the connection between Nathan and Shea, but by mid-point it had improved. The interaction between the Kelly brothers is always one of the best parts of this series, and there were some very nice moments in this one.
I do wish Maya Banks hadn't felt it necessary to add the paranormal element into this series. It's very hard to find a good romantic suspense series. Everyone and their dog writes PNR now. I'm hoping that the remainder of the series, aside from the next book, won't include paranormal aspects, and we can go back to just the romantic suspense.
All in all, I *am* looking forward to Grace and Rio's book, which is up next. Good installment in the series. 4 stars!
Pretty good narration. Although it seemed to drag a little and the drama towards the end did not seem as dramatic.
Prior comments: So when I started reading I had an oh shit moment that I was going to hate this book because of the plot. I am not that into this kind of paranormal so I thought I was screwed. But, like always, I kept reading and I really liked it! I thought the storyline was gripping, believable (yes I really said that), touching, sweet and an excellent way to handle Nathan's captivity and release. Shea is awesome and I am thrilled that I pushed through after my brief panic!
Whispers in the Dark is where we continue on with the series and the story sets off with our hero who is being tortured and held captive for two months. Then we have our heroine who has capabilities of telepathy and healing and gives hope to Nathan Kelly who is at the end of his rope and about to give up hope that his family could ever find him. Then, after through a set of events, the heroine helps get word to his family, but now she has disappeared and Nathan fears that he imagined this woman who saved his life but then he finds out that she is very much real and she is in danger and Nathan immediately goes after her. Together as they try to evade their enemies and the Kelly family comes together united against those that would harm one of their own, some secrets are revealed and truths are revealed about the identity of Shea and her family.
I found this to be a thrilling kick-ass romance that I just gobbled up, I couldn't get enough of this couple and their journey. And Maya Banks really steps up the danger and intensity in this book and I think somehow its my favorite of the series (so far) I absolutely adored everything about this book and the intensity of their connection was so masterfully written. You see from the beginning the incredible connection that they have together. I really enjoyed seeing their bond explored while at the same time they are trying to discover who would destroy them. I really found the plot of the series being in danger and on the run so fascinating. We don't get all the answers who is behind them but we do get a HFN type of ending as the danger to them is still high, but I adored the way that the Kelly family just comes together in this book and rallies to protect Nathan and Shea and sending out protection for her sister. The romance is sexy and intense and so many heartfelt moments that just had me at the edge of my seat with these two. Definitely a WINNER!!
The Who... Nathan: hot, determined and willing to put his life on the line for his brothers and brothers-in-arms. Shea: sweet, devoted and willing to take on another's pain to give them reprieve.
The What… Shea is on the run for her life, but her "gift" reaches out to Nathan who is being held hostage oversees. She "goes" to him telepathically and takes on his pain, imparts comfort and renews his belief in himself. I loved the description of the connection and the wonder and the awe that each of the characters seemed to have for the other. Just when Nathan believes everything is hopeless, Shea gives him the courage and the pain relief to overpower his captures and help free himself and his partner. Just when Nathan realizes that he is rescued, the one and only comfort he has known for the past two months leaves him. The whole left behind when Shea retreats from him is like nothing he has felt before. I literally, felt his pain.
The How… Is Shea an angel or is he crazy? Nathan asks himself over and over during the long and arduous six month recovery from his imprisonment. Despite the love and concern his huge family expresses, Nathan holds back and seems to retreat into himself. Then, without warning, Shea calls to him…Nathan? When Nathan reached out with his mind, it was then that I was hooked on the book. I love the PNR side to the suspense. Shea, fleeing her captures, needed to shake off the drugs that were suppressing her telepathy. Her blind trust and faith in Nathan gave me the heart clenches that I love while reading romance. But this was only the beginning of their awesome ride.
The End… The action was fast paced and the "who's, who" constantly changed, so we the reader where like Shea, never knowing who to trust or when to relax and feel safe. But like all great romances…the answer becomes wonderfully clear: Safe is being in the arms of the one who loves you…Safe in him who makes you feel at home. Enjoy!
(FYI review readers: I thought I would try a new format for my reviews…Let me know what you all think!)
Lady, you were held captive, drugged, and tortured for a week. Your birth control pills are no longer effective, dumbass.
That's my only complaint about this book. That one stupid moment where she's like "It's okay, I'm on the pill." Bitch, you have nothing but the clothes on your back and even those are more rags than clothes. You don't even know how long you've been held captive. You ain't on the pill anymore. Use a fucking condom.
Hands down, the best KGI yet!! This was such a great story. Though I can't wait for Rio and Grace's story because that just might top this one. I loved the psychic connection between Shea and Nathan. It brought a small amount of paranormal into a more realistic story line. And the way Shea continued to take Nathan's torture and pain was amazing. Not to mention how Grace was brought into it to run her gift through Shea and make it that much stronger. Amazing!! I highly recommend this book. There's plenty of action, emotion and passion to suit everyone's taste.
Fourth in the KGI series. Nathan, one of the Kelly brothers, has been captured by terrorists and tortured. One day he hears an angel's voice that keeps him from giving up. This angel has the ability to take his pain and is instrumental in his escape. The angel is Shea, a young woman on the run from the men who killed her parents. A wonderful romantic suspense with paranormal elements. I can't wait for the next installment!
When it comes to action both in and out of the bedroom, the Kelly Brothers never fail to disappoint. This is a hot little number, with action, sweet romance, a touch of PNR and of course to die for alpha males. It's a keeper!
I think the easiest way to write a review for this book is to just give you a list of the good, the bad and the ugly.
The Good: - The Kelly family! Even though we don't get to see as much of all of them as I would've liked, we do get some brother interaction. I look forward to reading this series because I love this family. - Plenty of action and suspense. Bad guys, running and fighting. The suspense level was excellent.
The Bad: - The hero. Is it bad to say that I kinda thought Nathan was a needy baby at times in this book? Don't get me wrong I still liked him, I just liked him a whole lot better in previous books. I understand what he went through with being captured and almost killed was tough but he didn't come across as an alpha male to me. And *hangs head in shame* he seemed a bit inexperienced at certain things, if you know what I mean... I guess I should stop measuring everyone up to Sam's standards! - The heroine. Shea, Shea, Shea. I could really take her or leave her. She was always first to sacrifice herself for everyone else and it almost cost her dearly many times. And although that requires some balls in itself, I wished she could've been a bit more kick ass.
The Ugly: - After three books I've come to expect a certain type of story from the series. So I was actually pretty shocked with the supernatural turn of events it's taken. At the beginning I was ok with it thinking it wouldn't be as big of a deal but it took over the whole storyline and it seems the next book as well. I'm not too sure how I feel about it.
So is it a good book? Yes. Not my favorite in this series by any means, but I will be better prepared for the next book I think and probably will enjoy it more.
This book grabbed me from the start and didn't let go, I started it last night and finished it this evening!!
This story is about Nathan Kelly, captured and tortured for months in Afghanistan. He is locked in a cage in the mountains, ready to give up, his strength gone, he is ready to die. In his darkest hour, he hears a voice in his head. A beautiful voice telling to hang on, to not give up, that he isn't alone....
Nathan is positive he has lost his mind. But, the voice in his head continues to talk to him, to reassure him. She wants to help him, get word to his brothers where he is.
Shea is a woman with a gift, she can reach out to people and take their pain away and speak to them in their minds. Shea and her sister Grace both have special abilities and someone is after them to exploit it.
What i loved about the about Nathan and Shea is the depth of their feelings for each other. I assume because of the "added element" to this story that i could feel the relationship grow between this two people. It felt real and deep, it filled my heart with warm fuzzy feelings! And i loved loved loved Nathan, his struggles, his heart, his complete openness and absolutely achingly need for Shea... *sigh*
This story had everything i have come to love about this series, action, steamy sex, romance, and the Kelly family (I love this family)! And now i get a little paranormal action thrown in the mix! YAY!!
Whispers in the Dark is the fourth book in Maya Banks’ KGI series. This is a romantic suspense series but don’t worry, it’s not one of those kinds of romantic suspense books. You know the type: either there is too much romance and not really any suspense or there is too much suspense – enough that you want to throw the book across the room and curl up into a ball and rock yourself back and forth, back and forth, back and forth – and not enough romance. I find Maya has just the right blend. And not only do you get a great romantic story and an enjoyable amount of suspense, but you also get steamy bedroom scenes (that sometimes don’t take place in a bedroom at all *blush*) and outstanding characters.
My favorite character in this series is the Kelly family. Yes, I am aware that the Kelly family consists of mom, dad and 6 sons, but the unit is so solid and incredibly written that even when I didn’t love a book in this series, the family and their chemistry saved the book. The women are fine and all, but the men and their parents are just fantastic.
Whispers in the Dark is Nathan’s story. Nathan is the baby of the family along with his twin brother, Joe. You don’t see much of Nathan in the previous books so I was actually surprised that his book was next. Most of the Kelly boys are ex-military men, but Nathan and Joe are just finishing off their time in the Army. But Nathan gets captured while in Afghanistan and at the very beginning of this book, he is being tortured. Not a fun way to start a book but boy let me tell you, it grabs you right from the get go. Poor Nathan… He’s about to give up hope when suddenly he hears a woman’s voice in his head telling him not to lose hope. This voice also has a way of making the physical pain go away. Thanks to her, he doesn’t lose hope, manages to escape and return to his family.
Before talking about the woman, I want to quickly say that I enjoyed how Maya wrote Nathan after he came home. I think she captured what he would have been going through really well. He didn’t just jump back into things and he didn’t just give everyone a hug, cry big tears and all was right in the world. He struggled and suffered and took things day by day. I respected that Maya kept things real and didn’t try to fluff it just because she’s writing a romance book.
Now back to the woman. Her name is Shea and she has the power to communicate with people through thought and she can take on someone else’s pain then heal herself. Pretty nifty tricks. Who she can communicate with is completely random so it’s pure coincidence that she can ‘chat’ with Nathan. (Her sister Grace has similar talents but there Shea can take away pain, Grace can actually heal a person.) Their whole lives, they have been kept alone and told not to divulge their secret to anyone. Because of this, Shea is used to living a lonely existence. When she ‘meets’ Nathan, both are at a place in their lives where they really need someone – he’s in captivity and she’s on the run. They suit each other very well. Both are survivors of horrible ordeals and understand each other. Both know that time is needed to heal and no magic potion will make you forget everything you’ve been through. Both understand the value of not being alone.
I don’t usually like stories where the hero and heroine are total soulmates almost the moment they actually meet in person but in this case, it worked. Thinking about what Nathan and Shea have gone through together before even having met in person will bring any two people close together. And they are not done going through heavy situations together since there are some pretty awful bad guys who are after Shea and her sister and the KGI gang have to try to figure out who and why. Yes, that is the suspense part in this romantic suspense book. *g*
The whole Kelly clan is in this book and so are the KGI teams. Each and every one of those characters is awesome and they will hopefully each get a book because I am really interested in knowing more about each and every one of them. Rio is off to find Grace and they are the hero and heroine in the next book, Echoes at Dawn. It’s due out in July 2012. Rio is a bit of a mystery so it will be nice to finally know his story. Then it’s PJ and Cole’s turn! They have such an amazing rapport and I think they will make a brilliant couple. Their book, Shades of Gray, is due out January 2013.
I was torn as to what to rate this book. Not because I wondered if I enjoyed it but because I wondered if I enjoyed it as much as the first book in the series. You see, book one is my benchmark for the KGI books because it was fantastic and my favorite in the series. After finishing Whispers in the Dark, I couldn’t say if I liked it more or less than my benchmark book one! After much thought (and maybe even a couple bottles of wine – I’m telling you, I take my ratings seriously ;) ) I decided that I liked it…just exactly the same! Therefore I give this book the same rating as I gave book one – five stars! *queue fireworks*
Maya done good this time and I can’t wait for the next book.
Nathan Kelly's plan was to serve his last tour in the Middle East, and then join his brothers in their private KGI operations, an elite group who contract with the government and private sector, taking on dangerous jobs. But his plan gets screwed up when he gets captured in Afghanistan. Stuck in a dark cave, tortured, naked, and starved, he is not sure how much longer he can survive. But then he hears a voice in his head. At first he thinks he is crazy, but the voice is persistent.
It turns out to be the voice of Shea, who lives back in the States. Shea and her sister Grace have a special gift. They can use telepathy to communicate with people — not specific people, it seems, just random people. Shea can take away someone's pain as well, and Grace can do one step better by healing them. But their special powers bring much danger to them. A year ago, their parents were murdered, while Shea and Grace narrowly escaped. Now they are being hunted by people who want to abuse their ability and most likely do worse things to them. They have separated and don't keep in contact, to stay more hidden.
When Shea hears Nathan's torture sessions, she immediately does everything she can to help take away his pain so he can endure and survive. She anonymously clues his brothers in to where he is being held, so he can be rescued. Once she is secure in knowing he is safe, she stops contact with him, as she continues her own battle to survive. But Nathan is not going to forget that voice in his head, and when Shea ends up being hunted again, she calls out for help.
Whispers in the Dark by Maya Banks is the first I've read of this series, but I think it does pretty well as a stand-alone. It has a strong beginning, as we watch Nathan truly suffer at the hands of his captors. While I'm not a fan of a supernatural twist being thrown into an otherwise straight-forward romantic suspense series, Shea's telepathic abilities didn't annoy me too much. I did find it odd that throughout the book, she communicates only with Nathan and a few other people. She can't control to whom she speaks with, but it also made it sound as though she would have had others trying to talk to her in her head.
But as I said, the beginning is really good. Once Nathan escapes and the story jumps ahead six months to where he is more physically recovered, comes the time where he meets physically with Shea. Here is where the story started to go downhill for me. The romance didn't work for me at all. I get that they have this bond because of the trauma they suffered while he was kidnapped and then later when she was kidnapped, but they meet face to face and pretty much fall in love instantly. They have sex and it's perfect, Nathan is perfect, Shea is perfect, everything is perfect. Well, except that they forget to use a condom several times. But otherwise, everything is just … perfect. It got annoying and their relationship just turned out … corny. Too mushy, too goody-goody, not appealing to me.
I also questioned how Shea could have this mind-blowing, romantic sex (more than once) with Nathan while her beloved sister, the person she cares about most in the world, is missing, possibly kidnapped by the evil bad guys. Shea didn't seem the type to be all smiles and joyful in bed, while the one person in her life who has always been there for her could be in danger.
Whispers in the Dark turned out to be OK for me. The suspense part gets a high grade, but with a lackluster romance, it was more of a disappointing read.
I have adored the KGI series so far, and let me just say up front on this review that, hands down, this is my favorite book in the series so far. I cannot fully explain to you how much I truly loved this book, but I am going to try! I love the entire premise of this story.
Shea has special telepathic powers. Overall, they have made her life hell, but she can't ignore the telepathic communications from a soldier being tortured who is on the brink of giving up, Nathan Kelly.
After a month of systematic torture and watching two of his friends be murdered, Nathan is ready to die...until he hears Shea in his mind telling him not to give up. Shea can enter peoples minds and redirect their pain. For Nathan these skills save his life and enable him to survive. They also create an incredible bond between these two people.
But when Nathan is rescued, Shea cuts off their connection because she is in her own fight for her life as she is being hunted for her abilities and is on the run. Only when things get desperate and a weak moment on Shea's part causes their connection to flare back to life. That's when the entire KGI team swings into action to save Shea and in turn, save Nathan, who is suffering because of the loss of his mental bond with her.
I loved, loved, LOVED this story! OMG, I LOVE the bond that Nathan and Shea share. The emotional level of it is so incredible to read and experience through them. I love that they are both wounded characters who truly need each other to survive. I love how strong that Shea is. OMG, she takes on the wounds of the person that she takes the pain from and she did this for Nathan over and over again...on purpose to save him...talk about ultimate sacrifice.
I loved that we got to see an even deeper level of the dynamic between the Kelly brothers. They have a huge part in this story as they are all working together to save Shea. I love them together and the way that they worry about Nathan and support him in this book....just so incredible!
To me, everything about this story was just absolutely perfect! But you all know me, I like heavy emotion and angst in my stories. This is going to be one of those books that you either really love or really hate as you roll your eyes because it is too over-the-top. This is where I choose to read for enjoyment and suspend disbelief so that I simply can enjoy the process of reading. But not everyone is like that, SO go into this book knowing yourself as a reader. For me, it was perfect, but it is not for everyone. I cannot wait for Grace (Shea's sister) and Rio's book...it's going to be another great one!! :o)
What a gripping and compelling story! Banks took me on an excitingly fast paced journey with twists and turns that I’d never fathomed possible. I love the way that she melded reality with something just a little more to make a new reality that was not only believable but completely possible. The bits of background information as to how this all came about gave me chills. Intertwined with the heated romance between the main characters and the action packed, suspenseful plot the whole was something that I simply couldn’t put down.
Nathan and Shea were a fantastic couple for this story. Nathan’s complete and utter conviction in Shea and his family painted a wonderful picture of who he was. Backed up by his strength, both physically and of character, and Banks has given us a hero that I won’t soon be able to forget. Shea’s need for normalcy yet her desire to keep everyone else safe made me feel very close to her. Surrounded by the Kelly clan and the rest of the KGI operatives Banks has created a cast of characters that drew me into the action and made me feel as if I were part of the story.
This was by far my favourite KGI novel so far. Banks had me hopping from cover to cover with this one and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Hi, my name is Sandy. And I’m addicted. To Maya Banks’ Kelly boys. Hooboy. I was a goner with the first book, and now with the fourth? Needless to say, I’m not coming up for air anytime soon.
This time it’s Nathan, one of the two youngest Kellys, twin to Joe, who goes through hell to find love. As we learned in the previous book, the twins were finally leaving their military service to come home and join their brothers at KGI. Before that could happen, they are both severely injured, Nathan taken hostage in Afghanistan. He’s beaten and tortured, forced to watch his brothers-in-arms also being tortured, even ultimately killed to try to force him to talk. It’s during a rare moment of solitude that an angel comes to his aid. She soothes his soul, takes his pain away, boosts his spirits - all in his mind, of course. Which can’t be. Has he finally gone around the bend?
Shea is telepathic and has been on the run for a year now. Separated from her sister by necessity of protection - information concerning each other that they don’t have can’t be shared - from those who want them both for their powerful abilities. But when she hears a man in pain, needing comfort, she can’t leave him to suffer alone. Stealing into his mind, she bolsters him enough to give him that extra spark he needs to keep going, enough hope that he’ll make it out alive. Shea stays with Nathan until he’s able to escape his captors and his brothers arrive to take him home. Then she’s gone. Totally. No matter how he calls for her, Shea doesn’t answer.
Bereft at the loss of his angel, Nathan is back home, healing. At least physically. It’s his spirit and mental capacity that he doubts. Was she real? Or just his imagination, a way his brain needed for him to survive his ordeal? And though it was thoughts of his family that kept him going while in captivity, now that he’s with them, he seeks solitude more and more, confusing and worrying his loved ones even further. Then everything changes when Shea reappears, her lovely voice echoing through his mind. But just as quickly her pain and fear overwhelm him, and Nathan knows he has to get to her soon. Wanting to include his brothers but knowing that will take too long, he commandeers a KGI jet, but even that seems to take forever to find Shea.
Once Nathan has Shea in his arms, he knows she’s the one for him. They share a bond like no others. They’ve seen and felt each other’s pain and fear and hopelessness, given each other the will to go on. Shea feels the same, she trusts Nathan and it’s heaven to trust someone again. She’s been on her own for far too long. Now her only concern is to find Grace, her sister. But Grace has gone silent after one last, very cryptic telepathic communication, and now Nathan and Shea are on the hunt to bring her to safety.
Maya Banks is another author for me who makes me feel everything her characters go through. Nathan’s pain and anguish in the beginning are palpable. Shea’s connection with him screams of hope. The love between them when they finally meet in the flesh is electric and soul deep. Then there’s all the intermediate emotions of the Kellys when Nathan’s fate is unknown, Shea’s fear for her sister, and then her own terror when all their plans are thrown into the wind by someone they thought they could trust. There isn’t a page in this book that doesn’t radiate with some type of feeling, even laughter, which is always a must when the Kelly family is together.
While the emotion in these books is what draws me back to them - well, besides the alpha, sexy heroes anyway - the heart-pounding action of ambushes and rescues and the like is also habit-forming. The scenes at Shea’s family home with the panic room never slow down until you’re about to jump out of your skin. There’s a few scenes like that, in fact. The helicopter scene later in the book is the same. It’s shorter but packs the same punch. I also enjoy Nathan and Shea’s telepathic communication with each other, especially in a car full of his brothers and other team members. There’s plenty of surprises throughout this story, fun and otherwise.
We’re now down to two Kelly brothers, Donovan and Joe, and this series will be over. Withdrawal will then be imminent for me. I’m not sure what I’ll do after that. I know I will be lost for a time. Maybe the Kellys have some cousins or other relatives - long-lost brothers? - who will save me. Yes, reaching for straws is a bad sign. I know I don’t want this addiction to come to an end.
