Little is known about the author, Elizabeth Renier (pen name). She began publishing HRs and children’s fiction in the early 1960s with no set time period. Besides one story available on Open Library, I don’t know of any of her books that are available in an e-format. In the US, unless your local library carries her stories or you luck out finding a book in a used bookstore or thrift shop, looking online will be your only source.

Valley of secrets was a simple story with a plot that has been done before. What set it aside was the hero and Ms. Renier’s style of writing. I enjoyed the atmosphere near the sea. I empathized with Jocelyn; she was stuck in a rut while trying to help those around her.

Captain Adam Peverell was one of those must-have heroes that I pine for when I read romances. He was kind, used gentle humor to lighten serious matters, loved children and was a good friend when Jocelyn needed someone. He was an honorable man.

Valley of secrets was just that. Jocelyn suffered from several predicaments. She wanted to tell Adam about her troubles, but she felt his involvement would cause him harm. Her grandfather, a manipulator, tightened his hold on her with threats. And then there was the twice-widowed, childless lawyer, Mr. Creedy, whom was old enough to be Jocelyn’s father.

I would have given this Georgian romance a solid 4 stars if less pages were devoted to the scheming grandfather and his lawyer. Jocelyn was likable if not mistaken with her judgment, and Adam was a well-written hero. Still, it won’t keep me from searching for Ms. Renier’s other books.
