Being a guardian angel is Drake’s purpose, his destiny written irrevocably in the stars. Choice is not a part of an angel’s life and something Drake never considered before he finds himself unexpectedly thrust into watching over Grey. Drake’s new charge is just another human, except for one tiny thing, Grey can see angels. When Grey finds out that, unlike his previous angel, Drake will talk to him Grey becomes determined to pull Drake from the sidelines and into life.
The consequences of Drake being distracted from his duty result in a decision that changes everything. Despite the depth of their love, the future remains uncertain. Drake’s purpose stripped from him by a sacrifice made in love, he falls into despair. Only one thing can save him, but is their love strong enough to rearrange the stars and change Drake’s fate?
First I loved this book Second I rarely read angel books because they are usually too preachy and religious for me to enjoy so I don't know how similar or how this compares with other M/M angel books.
This book was not preachy at all, just a great love story. I loved the characters and their relationship. I don't want to spoil anything because there are lots of surprises in the story so it is hard for me to find what to say.
I loved watching these guys fall in love. The best part is how complete the story feels. Usually when I finish a M/M book I want more but with this one when it ends it had already delivered everything I want in a story.
I would recommend it to everyone, it is a sweet love story but not overly sweet or sappy in my opinion.
If my memory serves me right (and correct me if I'm wrong, simply because my memory sucks!) this is Diane Adams' first foray into the supernatural world. The story is mainly about two endearing characters: Derek, a guardian angel with platinum-blond hair and blue-black wings -- an unusual kind of angel, he's the only one with different set of hair/wing color combinations. He is also the only angel who determines to remember all the human he ever assigned to. His latest assignment is Grey, a "guardian" of his own kind, a human who can see and talk to angels and guard his community in the same determination as Derek.
When Derek meets Grey, something is changed. Derek starts to interact with Grey, he has conversation with him, he helps Grey in his work, he listens to Grey reading ... he becomes more than just a guardian. He becomes a participant in this human life. Grey also challenges Derek about how things work in angel-land, he confronts Derek about choices ... and this moves thing to a different path. Stars are rearranged.
I definitely welcome the new "myth" of angels in this story. It sure brings a thoughtful idea, about how angels work, and how to incorporate choices in their life. There are some endearing moments, with saying "I love you" more than one time, which slightly almost become sappy. I said "almost", because Diane is managed to balanced it out with a couple of twists, most especially regarding Grey and what becomes of him for loving an ex-angel, and his own role of changing the angels forever; just when it comes to nearly too sugary moment. . Oh, and KUDOS, for Diane to bring Jim Butcher and the Dresden Files to this story *lol*. What I can say, I love Harry.
If I have an issue, it will be somehow the names Derek and Grey keep jumbling in my head. My brain can't seem to connect who is who. I will blame my sleep deprived situation for that. Definitely my own problem and not othe readers, I believe.
This is a hard one to rate and even harder to review,
This started off strong for me but then seemed to falter. I loved the whole Angel theme but once sex entered the picture it just fell apart for me.
The story line was interesting and it’s what kept me reading, but I failed to feel the chemistry between Drake and Grey. Maybe it was just my mood, but my interest lay in the hidden story of Grey rather than in the romantic story of Grey and Drake.
Sadly I also failed to appreciate the conclusion to this story. Nothing seemed to make much sense to me. I’m sure this was entirely my problem, I just failed to grasp the deeper meaning I guess.
This is certainly more than a 2 star read, but I can't say its quite a full 3 star.
I really liked this unusual angel story. There were some pretty heavy and dark moments, brilliant writing. Still, it's more of a 3.5 because the plot kinda lost me a little at the end, but I was nice confused 😇
Hmmm, a storyline about angels that doesn’t involve God or heaven – interesting (in a good way)!
This book brought out a unique blend of emotions that I don’t often experience. I found it to be highly romantic with a very sad overtone – strange, and yet it worked beautifully together.
Drake and Grey were one of those couples that just seemed destined to be together. Their love felt like a palpable thing – you could almost reach right into the pages and touch it. Their willingness to aid, protect and sacrifice for the other made for some heart wrenching reading. I had a hunch about how these two would end up getting their happy ending, and for the most part, I was right, but that doesn’t mean there still weren’t some interesting twists and turns to be discovered along the way!
A wonderful story - not to be missed, especially if you enjoy boys with wings :) I’ll definitely be back for more by this author! Overall, 4.5 stars!!
3.65* This is a very interesting and totally different take on Angels and Guardian Angels than anything I've read before. There is also no religion or 'preaching' in this story. Drake is a guardian, but he is different than all the other angels, he remembers all of his charges through all time, he cares, all the others just do their job and exist, and forget as soon as its done. When Drake is assigned to Grey, things really change, Grey can see all angels, but Drake is the first one to ever acknowledge or answer him. This starts a process of not only changing both their lives but all of heaven and earth. I liked this story and thought the difficulties and adjustments Drake has to make was very well done, but the love story didn't really work for me so much. It could just be my mood and despite that I'm glad I read this book.
Let me start off by saying no matter what the short comings I might mention about this book, they don’t matter. I stayed up till 4:00 AM reading this book because I was enjoying it so much. There is no way I can’t give a book that entertains me this much anything but a 5 star rating. It might not be for everyone, I’ll explain shortly, but it was for me!
Angel stories are big right now, but I haven’t seen many m/m ones. So I was delighted to find this one, and Diane Adams was kind enough to send me an ARC. I was totally in love with the two main characters. Grey is a well adjusted gay man. He has been able to see Guardian Angels his whole life, but they never interact with him. He spends his evenings patrolling the streets and keeping his neighbors safe.
Drake is a guardian angel who has always been different from his brothers. He looks different, having hair and wings a different color. He also retains the memories of his charges while the other angels quickly forget theirs and move on to the next. Guardian angels don’t have the ability to feel emotions. This makes it easier to do their job. Drake knows nothing about love, touch or choice. He is very naïve (so you know how good this could get ;). Humans can’t see Guardian Angels who aren’t corporeal, so they can’t physically interact with the human world. Drake is surprised when Grey not only sees him, but can also touch him. Much smexy goodness ensues. I don’t want to give away too much about the plot.
The story is predictable and the prose is simple, but fast moving. It reminds me of YA, but this isn’t YA. The sex scenes are sweet and spicy. It would make a wonderful Yaoi graphic novel. Drake is very much a Uke with his innocence and need to be taken care of by Grey. I asked Diane Adams if she was a fan of Yaoi and was surprised to find she hasn’t read a lot of it :). The story is so sweet it will give you cavities!! I am a big fan of this kind of m/m story. If you like the ‘Gay For You’ and ‘OMG, they are so sweet’ type of story then you will be very happy with this.
This book was excellent and shows Diane Adams to be a rising star as a writer. Drake is a guardian angel but unlike his brother guardian angels, Drake holds the memory of his charges. Drake's current charge is a human guardian named Grey. The odd thing about Grey is that he can see angels and even touch and talk too Drake which is unsettling to Drake. Grey's curiosity is insatiable and soon Drake and Grey become lovers. This leads to an internal struggle for Drake when Grey is injured when his angel should have been on guard and not in bed. Drake tries to shut down his feelings for Grey without success so he takes the ultimate step an angel can take. The two main characters are well drawn and it doesn't take long to like them. The story flowed perfectly and the subplot of the Herald meshed well. What was particularly interesting was the way Ms Adams story was about angels but these angels knew of no God. I recommend this book to everyone that is looking for a romance story with just the right twist.
I love angel stories and this one did not disappoint. However, every time I read one I expect to have my heart ripped out like Nick Cage and Meg Ryan in City of Angels. Fortunately, my heart was left intact while Drake and Grey got their HEA.
Of course, nothing is ever as simple or as it appears. There is the requisite touch of surprise and a small bit of angst, but Drake and Grey are so sweet and hot together and I loved them both. I wouldn't change a thing about either of them.
Loved this story. If you aren't truly happy and want more, make it happen. Period. And if they don't like it, f*ck 'em all. ;- ) We're all responsible for making our own happiness, even if that involves upsetting a few rules and rearranging a few stars.
The only thing I would have done differently was not refer to "shifting", since that's not really my thing genre-wise, but I loved the book start to finish and was laughing a lot of the way through.
This is a wonderful love story that truly is full of pain and loss, with love conquering all as the underlying theme. Some of the angel lore was a little difficult to bring together cohesively for me as a reader, but I was so enamored with Drake and Grey that I dealt with it. Adams did a great job with Drake, I absolutely loved him and the full range of emotions that he drew from me (and his addiction to Harry Dresden ;). He is one of those characters that I know will stick with me. I sometimes think back to couples in books that I associate with comfort, Grey and Drake are one of those comfort couples. Great read!
I only have a few words to say on this...mostly because I run out of things to say on Diane's writing. She is a friend, I write with her, I am biased I know, but this book and her last Making of a Man book are exceptionally well written, page turning, beautiful, lyrical stories.
**4.5 stars** I love angels and boys with wings in general, and this book didn't disappoint me in that respect. Drake was so beautiful, inside and out, and Grey was an amazing character who took such good care of his angel when he'd fallen. The story was emotional and sexy and just amazing. I really want more. :)
Maybe more of a 3.5 stars. I don't know why this book didn't do more for me. The elements were all there. Maybe it was the fact that although they really loved eachother, it wasn't even close to enough to make Drake happy. Kind of a sad love, I guess. Interesting take on angels, decent sex, just not great.
Really fun read. As a big fan of both m/m romance and angel themed fiction, this was a perfect combination of both. The story stayed strong from beginning to end, the plot and flow are very unique and imaginative. I highly recommend this book.
I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this, given I usually avoid angel stories. Certainly the lack of any fallen from grace or god/heaven/good/evil business made it unique. I really liked the characters and it was a really good solid story.
Oh my gosh this is heaven!!! M/m urban fantasy romance with angels?! I am literally shaking right now. This cover looks so gorgeous and I would totally buy it if it came with this cover, but it doesn’t!!! 😭😭😭
A really nice book, always worth a read. Angels, m/m romance and bitter-sweet struggles to find happiness despite human intolerance.
This was my first tine with this author, and wont be my last.
Characterisation:
Solid, though i could have done with learning more about Grey and his formative years. His past beyond learning about the car accident remains unexplored.
All the angels are cute, but pink lil Ralph is so cute i was actually giggling every time he featured. A strawberry blonde angel with pink wings and a smattering of freckles on his nose? Adorably cute! (Where can i get one?)
Plot:
It has its twists and turns, racy bits but still a bit predictable. For the most part the plot is fine.
Sex scenes:
Not to be crude, but these matter in an m/m romance! The author could have given us more without being crude or anything. They were always a little too abrupt for me, but the idea of having orgasm reflected in wing control was sweet (hence the half star)
This book was just okay. Three stars might be sort of generous, but because I love Diane Adams' "Making of a Man" series, I'm being lenient.
This book is not bad. But it's not good, either. There's some insta-love happening, which I never like, and the end was pretty cheesy and predictable. I liked what we got to see of Grey and Drake, but overall they were pretty underdeveloped as characters. There was very little urgency to this story. It was good in the middle; the character of Drake goes through some interesting changes and trials, and I thought that was where the story was at its best, but overall... I was disappointed. I was excited for this book because I like Diane Adams but this is not her best work.
I have had this on my TBR list for a long time and now I am kicking myself for not reading it sooner.
The relationship between Drake and Grey was wonderful to watch, but that was not the only thing I liked about the book. The author brought a different perspective to who angels are and what they do for humans. It was interesting. The ideas she put forth along with the romance made this a great book.
This lovely m/m romance featuring angels will force you to suspend disbelief on occasion, but hey, these aren't werewolves, they're angels that can do unbelievable things. They are governed by the stars, not the earth.
I really enjoyed this romance between Drake and Grey and all the surprises in the end. Nicely done!
4.5 stars. I loved the book. The only reason I didnt give 5 starts was because I thought that the intimacy between the angel and grey could have been told in more detail. But that's coz I love sexual tension between the MC'c. All in all it was a fabulous book. LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really like Diane Adams. Brilliant author. Loved her "Makings of a Man" series.
