This got off to a great start with an opening chapter that brought a lump to my throat. So did the rest of the book live up to expectations? Well, yes, pretty much. The plot line of people being infected with "anger" was an intriguing if not, in all honesty, a very credible one - neither was the way the culprit manages to get away with doing the dirty deed for that matter! Yet despite that apparent hindrance, Tegenfalk manages to work things into plausible enough scenarios that things didn't seem far-fetched while reading them - if that makes sense!

It helped that the characters were believable & I really liked Walter Grohn & Jonna de Brugge, both of whom I look forward to reading about again. The tone & format of the story was reminiscent of other Scandinavian crime I've read which for me could only be a good thing. I did however struggle with keeping track of all the different departments in the Swedish legal system & the acronyms but it wasn't anything that detracted from my enjoyment of the story, which I found nice & twisty with the odd touch of black humour that amused me.

Now as to the ending...I knew this was the first in a trilogy & judging by the title of book 2 "Project Nirvana" I had already suspected some link between the content of the two. However, I would have liked a more complete conclusion & worry that if this "anger" theme continues over the whole trilogy then it might stretch credibility too far & risk spoiling itself. Still I won't know till I've read them.... & read them I will ;o)

The core plot of this book is extremely good and I enjoyed the unusual and at times exciting story, but the writing lacks style and closer editing. It jumps around a little too much, breaking the flow of the reader and I felt some dialogues were a little too long. It's a shame because this could have been a cracking book. The author has a sequel out which I hope flows a little better, I will look forward to reading and comparing.

It's hard to say which is worse in this novel, the story itself or the several mistakes by the writer (I don't say author, this is a novel by somebody who can write but not tell a good story).

The detective story year 2009 must have been somewhat poor as the Svenska Deckarakademin (The Swedish Thriller academy) says "this is without a doubt one of the best books of the year".
My opinion is that this is a somewhat failed attempt to write a thriller.
As a rule the Nordic Noir novels (especially Swedish ones) have been quite good.

And the mistakes. Tegenfalk tells how a nine ton Jumbo jet struggles in the storm - an empty jumbo jet weights some 130 tons and the takeoff weight is from 333 tons (735,000 pounds) to 440 tons (970,000 pounds). A slight mistake?
In Tegenfaks world Porche 911 Carrera Cabriolet seems to have four doors which is news to me (and to Porche too).
Desert Eagle pistol was hard to aim in semi-automatic mode; which is odd bnecause that is the only mode a semi-automatic pistol has.
Etc. Etc.
One doesn't need to be particularly educated to know things like those.

There are two more of these novels coming (trilogy says the cover sleeve). No need to read. I recommend you don't read even this one.

Suomalaisille lukijoille:
Kirjan kääntäjä Riie Heikkilä on tehnyt huolimatonta työtä.
Esimerkkejä: Rangaistusoikeus on oikeasti suomeksi rikosoikeus (Straffrätt).
Mitä on "ylimerkitty asuntolaina"?
Jne.

It's obvious that the author don't know what he's writing about, in addition to the worst plot ever. Sorry. Don't even bother picking this piece up

Good if (I hope) rather unbelievable story. A dangerous drug is in the wrong hands: a father grieving for his dead daughter has become obsessed with revenge. (We are more or less told this at the start, so not a spoiler!) A few familiar themes, including the idea of some of Sweden's special branch having unfortunate attitudes (hence words like "towelhead", which only appear in the thoughts of the corrupt special branch policeman who is so convinced that everything is an Islamist conspiracy that he completely misses the real motive). This is all a bit disjointed and there are a few cliches - the older policeman who is generally in trouble with is superiors and has a health problem, the younger woman who is a high-flier - but there are some funny moments too. This is supposed to be the first in a trilogy, and there are enough loose ends left at the end of this story to lead into the next.

What I like about this book is that it's a little bit different from the rest of the books in the same category. I also like Walter and Jonna and their friendship and I hope I'll see more in the next book!

What I disliked was the dialogues and sometimes the language. There were also a lot of people and details to remember in the first part of the book, which made the story uninteresting.

If the language would have been better, I would have given this book 3/5 but now it's 2/5 and I really hope that the next book is better than this.

Ruotsalaiset ne osaa tämänkin lajin.Mielenkiintoinen ja oikein luettava dekkari.Miinuksena ehkä hiukan liian monta seurattavaa henkilöhahmoa, jotka ainakin sivuhenkilöiden osalta jäivät hiukan vaillinaisiksi. Kyseessä on kuitenkin selkeästi sarjan aloitus.

Under gennemsnittet.

This book was totally amazing great, I don't really feel a good conection to read "several crime" related books but this book was both good and sometimes funny.
I also sometimes talked to the story because I had a explanation or a thought/opinion before it was solved.

Well this book is highly recommended..

Nappasin tämän lukulistalle jonkun naistenlehden suosituksesta, kehuivat vuoden esikoidekkariksi.

A really disjointed book that left a xenophobic taste in my mouth. I really didn't like the use of 'towelhead' and other slurs against muslims. I think I am sick of reading the same cliche time and time again; young and hardworking female police officer and an aloof old inspector who solves every case he has because he is a prodigy.

Poorly edited book. Sadly, this could probably have been good with more work.

The basic ideas are intriguing, but the execution is lacking.

Also, it is just boring to go with the basic old and grumpy male police and young and ambitious female police.

I enjoyed this book enough to read it fairly quickly. I thought the theme could have been explored a bit more, it has more potential. I will read more of the authors books, and would recommend for a bit of escapism (isn't that we are all reading these books).

Great, steady, just what I expected when it comes to Swedish police books. Will read the second book in the series for sure. Read it in Swedish so I don't have a clue if it would translate well or not.

Njaaa.. Synd :-(

It might deserve 3,5 stars in its current form. With a little more work, it could have gotten four stars. But I will read the next book, and I guess that's a good grade in itself.
