Jamaica Kincaid is an Antiguan-American novelist, essayist, gardener, and gardening writer. She was born in St. John's, Antigua (part of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda). She lives in North Bennington, Vermont (in the United States), during the summers, and is Professor of African and African American Studies in Residence at Harvard University during the academic year.
I love this book, but it is very sad. Kincaid captures childhood in a remarkable way. We love the closeness we have with our mothers when we are children, and it's hard for some to let that go as we grow older. We think we are losing our mothers, but if we accept it the new life a head of us, we actually grow closer to them. The problem is accepting change. That's just one thing Kincaid shows in this wonderful story.
I liked the story, it gave a POV of what it truly was/is to be a woman, and wasn't afraid to show the dark sides of it. I thought that it was really intentional and smart at leaving certain aspects to be interpreted because every woman's story/experience is different.
Girl 🧺~3 stars~ (27th of September- 27th of September ) A novella that transports you into the societal expectations of girl hood and the pressure young women have to face.
