When dark fantasy and science fiction are accessories to noir, the punishment may be even weirder than the crime. Features four previously published tales of magical mafiosi and strange detective work.
A mob enforcer turns the tables on his sorcerous bosses when they fail to realize "Kids Cost More".
Set in the same world as "Kids Cost More", a thug has to collect on a blind man's loan... a blind man he owes far more than he realized.
In the Writers of the Future reprint "Deadglass" a Cathar priest turns detective when he discovers the souls he's just sealed away in glass isn't as sinful as the church led him to believe.
"Legwork" may not be enough to close the case when a bounty hunter in near future Florida discovers his quarry may also be a serial killer.
Lon Prater is a retired Navy officer by day, writer of odd little tales by night. His short fiction has appeared in the Stoker-winning anthology Borderlands 5, Writers of the Future XXI, and Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show.
Legwork: A Weird Crime Casebook is an e-book collection of "Weird Crime" or "Tech Noir" tales by Lon Prater.
The collection consists of 4 separate stories told from the perspective of some likeable, if not-so-reputable, characters. I found myself being drawn into the fantastic & futuristic settings, rooting for these flawed characters as they reveal more about their world and their exciting situations.
It's a bit of Shadowrun, Pulp Fiction, and Blade Runner with memorable characters and a world worth revisiting. In the end, it all adds up to a fulfilling and unique noir experience.
Chapters: 1) Kids Cost More Magic mafiosi "take care" of some in-house business.
2) Putting the Business First For a futuristic hitman, how far can you go before you cross the line between "Business" and "Personal?"
3) Deadglass The battle for a person's soul takes on a new meaning when you have the power to trap and store it in glass.
4) Legwork The search for a fugitive immigrant takes a dark turn as the future meets the past in this inspiringly twisted noir tale.
5) Case Closed The author gives the reader insight into the history of each story and the process of conceptualizing "Weird Crime" tales.
