Well, I must say this book REALLY surprised me. I have no idea where I found out about this book. I never heard of Mary McCall and had no idea why I decided to even get this book besides that it sounded good. As my friends here at goodreads all know that I like my book's on the spicy side and I must say that this book checked that category off very nicely for me.
I love Highland Romances and this book had a paranormal twist to it that I found added wonderfully to the story. Right from the start it kept me very entertained.
LOVED the heroine Alera. She was unlike any heroine I have ever read about and she was the one with the paranormal element that I truly enjoyed. She was fierce, strong, loyal, honorable, caring and so much more.
Don't you just love when a sexy as sin Highlander see's his match and say's MINE? Well I do and Duncan did so throughout the book. He claimed Alera right from the start and said he was never going to let her go.
There was some LOL moments too and also really good secondary characters.
As I have already said the love scenes were well done and nothing over the top. They were just right for me :)
All and all I'm very glad I gave this book a try and I look forwards for the next book in this series to be released.

OOOO I loved this book so much! I was laughing through the whole thing. After finishing this book I immediately bought the other two books by Mary McCall.
I loved Alera, she was so spunky. There were times that I found her a little childish, in the things she said and did, but I didn't even care, because I loved her so much. One thing that kind of bugged me though, was her description. I kept thinking of her as having black hair, because of the cover model. But part way into the book it says she has golden brown. But by that point I couldn't think of her as any other way but with black hair. And dang it there were quite a few times her hair color was described and mentioned. Every time I felt like they were describing someone else. :( Because Alera had black hair in my mind.

Favorite Quotes
There were so many spots in this book that made me laugh or smile. I marked WAY too many, so I had to narrow them down and only share a few.
Alera was very creative in the names she called Duncan when she got mad at him. I thought they were funny, here are a few. And I think it is worth noting that 3 of the following quotes are all taken from the same page. haha
"Do not come near me, you... you... you...despicable son of a rotten she-dog!"
"I thought I was dreaming, you randy rotter! [...]"
"[...] Well, I shall not wed you, you slimy serpent!"
"I meant England, you devious spawn of a bloody oafish goat."
"Why...why...you...you judgmental toad!"
~Alera
And those were only the ones I started marking after I realized it was a reoccurring thing.

Duncan (Ranald) wanted Alera to marry him. She asked for some time to think about it. He decided to allow her a month with no pestering, for her to think it over.
"'Twould not be a problem if they had a Lady Ranald to guide them."
"That sounds like pestering, and my month is not up. For that remark, I demand an extra day or a new pair of shoes." She turned and walked toward the path to the stream, calling over her shoulder, "I will be gracious and let you decide."
"Only wives can make demands," he called after her retreating back.
She snorted and disappeared down the trail.

"My papa is a great warrior who trains other great warriors. I have learned many lessons from him. One is nobody," she slammed her fist on the table beside Glen, "and I mean nobody comes on our land and pushes us around. Another is do not spank a dog tomorrow for today's bad act."
"I agree with the first part milady. But we do not spank dogs." Parlan frowned. "We're warriors."
"What does spanking dogs got to do with the MacTavishes?" Auggie asked, scratching his head.
"I do not think spanking MacTavish's dog would be getting even," Egan called from the hearth.
"Aye," Leith agreed. "We ought to at least get the sheep back. I suppose would could take a dog or two."
"But if we take the dogs, will the lady spank them?" Parlan asked
Alera rolled her eyes. "Forget the dogs. You must go now and take revenge."
"We wait for the laird," Kevin Said.
"I do not think the laird will be letting you spank MacTavish dogs," Parlan said.
(A few pages later when Duncan is questioning Alera as to where she hid the sheep that were stolen back form the MacTavishes, she informs him they are safe because...)
"I took a couple of MacTavishs dogs to watch them and left Henry to help," Alera admitted.
"Who is Henry?" Colin asked.
"Didn't know the lady had an Englishman with her," Parlan said.
"We really should kill him," Leith suggested.
"Aye, that would be best, seeing as he is English," Colin agreed.
"But he does us a favor by helping the dogs watch Glen's sheep," Auggie pointed out.
"You did not spank the dogs did you, milady?" Egan asked.
Geddes frowned. "Why would she spank the dogs?"
"We're not exactly certain about that ourselves," Kevin rplied. "She did not explain well."
Alera groaned and leaned her face into her hands, resting her elbows on the table.
"But she was right about that other thing," Parlan said.
Duncan wiped a hand over his face. He knew he shouldn't, but was going to ask. "What other thing?"
"She said nobody..." Parlan paused and then nodded. "And she meant nobody, because she said it twice and pounded the table. Anyway, nobody comes on our land and pushes us around. Course then she lost me. Wanted to spank dogs."
"Arrugh!" Alera came to her feet, placed her palms flat on the tabletop, and glared at the clansmen. "I did not wish to spank dogs! I was trying to tell you revenge should be swift."
"Well, why did yo not just say so?" Parlan asked.
"We already knew that," Colin said. "'Twas why kevin sent for the laird."
~Duncan, Alera, Colin Parlan, Kevin, Geddes, Egan, Auggie and Leith
BAHAHAHAHA It is scenes like this that had me cracking me up throughout this book.

"Did your brain just poop?"
"What?!"
"You heard me. I asked if your brain just pooped. "Tis what mama told me men do when they need to clear space in their minds for rational thought."
Overall a fun-ish and cute story, this makes for an easy light read if you can get past some of the books inconsistencies. The premise of this has promise. There were a few reasons why I thought I would/should dislike this book, but something about McCall's writing has ensured that this is a book I enjoyed reading overall. Are there somethings I wish were different....yes - wish Alera did turn out to be as warrior like as is implied at the start, especially considering her 'gifted' nature. And I wish certain components of the plot had been teased out far more.
That said the heat between her and her hot possessive and somewhat overbearing highlander works. And I did enjoy reading this.
What can I say about this book? Many things actually, first thing, I am beginning to think that families of certain authors like to write 5 star reviews, to convince a reader that they should buy the book because of the 5 stars. I am not saying that all authors ask their family and friends to go to amazon.com and write an outstanding review, but I am suspecting that this was the case in this book. My mistake when buying a book is that I tend to look up at how many stars a book might have, in order to make my decision to buy it. This book does not deserve to many stars.
Now having said this, the book is not as I expected. The girl name Alera was supposed to be a strong character. She does have a strong personality, but that is not what I am talking about. What I meant is something like a warrior woman. That is what the first chapter led me to believe. I got a sample sent to me to my amazon kindle. After reading the first chapter sample I bought the book. I thought, well, hey, this must be good, she looks like she is going to grow up and be this great kick a**, Xena warrior princess, Underworld, Selene Lycan slayer. Bad assie Buffy the vampire slayer. But sadly I was wrong.
The book is titled "Highland Captive". I thought, oh, the girl is going to be taken prisoner, and she is going to fight her way out. She is going to beat the sh** out of the men who kidnapped her and she is going to somehow become some warrior chick that no one messed with. DID THAT HAPPEN NO???? The book is about a girl who is taken captive and falls for her abductor. This was stupid because who in the right mine would fall for a kidnapper. Then I thought, wait this is just a book and authors could write what they want. They do not have to write anything believable.
Who really falls for the kidnapper? No one.
I also believe that the girl is not the smartest person in the world. She does dumb things. The first night she meets this man she had a “ONE NIGHT STAND”. I totally lost interest in the book right away, the entire book talks about her being tamed by this barbarian war lord and how many time she escaped later to be found again by her lover. Then “BANGED” again for escaping. That was her punishment. Well, not her punishment, it is not a punishment if the woman liked it.
The book is something I've read before. Girl is kidnapped. She has a one night STAND. Girl escapes. SHE IS BANGED In a cave. In the lovers home. BANGED. Girl escapes again. BANGED. Girl is found. BANGED. Girl is forced into marriage. BANGED. Girl is tamed by her lover warlord barbarian. BANGED. (BANGED OR ONE NIGHTER, CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL PEOPLE). IT IS STILL THE SAME.
I have heard this story told by many authors, only the characters names are changed.
I fell asleep reading this book. Is that a good thing, I asked. For me yes, because I can’t fall asleep. I need to take some sleeping pills each night which is a bit frustrating. So, people, now I know that if I need to sleep, but cannot, I just need to read the book again, and it will have me sleeping like a baby in no time. Bad for the author because, I sleep.
What saddens me is that romance has taken a different path. These novels have to do with sex more than love between to people.
In fact, I looked up the definition of the word “ROMANCE”. It reads: involvement between people; love, A strong, sometimes short-lived attachment, fascination, or enthusiasm for something. A mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful.
Nowhere in this definition does it say: sex, one night stand. Okay, I guess you can call me old fashioned. I really do not think that a good book has to be based in SEX alone. Why do I know this???? Because many authors have written books that are great and that have nothing to do with sex. This is one of the many reasons why I stopped reading romance novels. Readers lose track of the main goal, the purpose why the book was written to begin with. Lets not overdo it.
People say that MEN think about SEX every two seconds, I am beginning to think that women do the same but instead of talking about it like men do, females write about it. I’ve read many male authors books and I’ve never read a book of theirs that has that many sex parts. Or maybe I am the only person who thinks this way. Take no offence to the female authors out there, but I’ve noticed this when I started to read male authors book and started to piece it together. I am not trying to be mean, but if you guys pay attention you will see that I am saying the truth.
I hate writing bad reviews, this time I couldn’t help it. The one star is for the characters, she did do a good job on them. The other star is for the first chapter of the book. Everything else, the entire story was not the very best. The same story told by one author is good enough for me. But to have many authors tell almost the same story, it can get a bit old.
Alera is what some people would call selfish and spoiled, but that couldn't be further from the truth. She is loving, loyal, protective, nurturing, spirited, and compassionate to the suffering of others. Her being a proper lady is only further enhanced by the skills she possesses in running a household. All of these traits were instilled in her from an early age by a mother who knew that someday Alera would grow to appreciate and use the lessons that were being taught. Her mother knew that Alera was Gifted, and made sure to let Alera know how special she is and to embrace her uniqueness. Unfortunately, her protected circumstances change when her mother passes and her father is presumed dead. Being the sole heir to her father's estate garners unwanted attention by her vile uncle who wants the estate and sells her to Viking slavers. There is one thing none of them ever counted on and that is the demon rage she harbors within and an angel guardian named Henry.
Duncan is ill-prepared when it comes to the enchantress that washes up on his Highland shores. There is no weapon to battle the feelings that she stirs within him nor is there a way of controlling the feisty woman. It becomes quickly apparent that she more than what she appears and the thought of her leaving him is unfathomable. No matter how much she tries his patience, the soul of the passionate woman beneath the beautiful exterior calls to him and Duncan will do anything to possess her. The extraordinary gifts that Alera brings to his clan only further his need to claim her and nothing and no one is going to stop him. Not even Alera herself.
The scenery, the characters, and the ever unfolding storyline are magically presented in this first in a new series by Mary McCall. From the start of the story the plot progresses quickly with authentic descriptions and characterizations. A fluidly written historical romance that immediately grabs the reader by the heartstrings and pulls.
The depth of emotion and romantic development are believable and allows readers to experience vulnerable moments between Alera and Duncan. Alera has so many admirable qualities and at such a young age her wealth of life knowledge is tremendous. Meanwhile, Duncan's rough Scot qualities make him a formidable warrior and lover and the best opponent for Alera in both. Perhaps best of all is the connection made with the charming secondary characters, even those in animal form. They each bring a different dynamic to the story that richly enhances the dialogue and lends plenty of humorous moments.
Many familial connections are realized throughout the story and discoveries of destiny await more of the “sisters by choice” in what is sure to be a compelling continuation in the series. I am excited to relive this enchanting world that Ms. McCall so skillfully put together and will gladly be rereading this tale for many years to come.
I've realized that my Kindle is going to be my downfall. I see a book on sale for $.99 and I'm like "Oh my gosh, so cheap! It's sounds good... Let me read a review to make sure. Okay, looks good! CLICK." -_- I need to stop.
For one, I've never really read a historical romance before. Not my cup of tea. The language was weird and awkward, and I was pretty irritated the whole time reading it. I was confused most of the time, too. Things happened and the author seemed to think that I could read her mind and deduce the reasons for things happening when she never actually tells us in the book!!! OH she got kidnapped because YOU KNOW WHY!!!!! No!!! I don't!!! Explain!!!!! A hundred pages later.... Oh, that's why... I would have liked to know sooner!
Another issue, I need to look at multiple reviews. I usually pick a mid-range rating and read that, hoping that it's accurate. Again, NEED TO STOP! The review I read was like "Well, I Really liked it, but it wasn't as good as some I read blah blah great romance blah blah and it's clean!" I like clean! Nice uncreepy and totally TMI romance. Sounds good. Let me ask you, dear person, what the heck is your idea of clean??? Sure maybe it's not as bad as some, but I'm delicate and like my clean actually CLEAN!! They can do it, just don't spell it out for me. And basically all this was was them doing it over and over and over and over and over again. Stop. Please. And he basically rapes her at the beginning, but oh, that's okay because she actually wants it. Just because she's saying no, stop, let me go, she has a really mind blowing orgasm, so that must mean it's all fine and dandy. NO!!!! I get that it's all "historical" and stuff like that happened, but it seemed more like an excuse for the author to right an entire book about sex.
Now, all of the above complaints could have been avoided if I had just stopped ready when my spidey-senses started tingling.... The guy, Duncan whatever, is a big, barbaric, ape, hairy, shithead, GINGER!!! No offense to any gingers reading this, but honestly, I don't want to do it with a giant kilt wearing, long haired, hairy red headed man. In fact, I wouldn't do it with anyone in a kilt regardless of hair color. Or with anyone overtly hairy... or who RAPES me (well, I guess I wouldn't have a choice if he raped me, but I certainly wouldn't do it with him WILLINGLY after that).
Moral of the story, I have learned my lesson and will no longer be sucked in by cheap prices, pretty covers, and misleading reviews (ehem, fellow goodreaders! Get on the ball!). This is my pledge, and I will probably break it within the hour...
I really enjoyed this highland tale. Our heroine is feisty and to much for following orders. Our hero is a laird all about giving orders. And is the Highland way, when Duncan first sees Alera he knows he's keeping her weather she agrees or not. This tale has treachery, a bit of the mystical and of course stubborn highlanders! It kind of reminded me of a Julie Garwood highlander book. It was a fun easy read. And I got it for 1.99 for my Kindle. Got to love a cheap read. =)
I’ve stopped tracking how many times I’ve read this story. I love everything about it! The characters are strong, brilliant, funny, and they don’t turn weak and wishy-washy once they’ve found a partner. The banter is so good! I woke my husband who was peacefully sleeping next to me by snorting loudly multiple times during the funny moments! This book is both a warm, comforting hug and an exciting call to go on epic adventures.
Lady Alera is English but her mother is also a MacKay, a member of the Gifted clan MacKay who legend says that for every generation of MacKays one female child will be born with a Gift. Alera is the Gifted one of her generation and she will go to the Highlands as foretold and as the circumstances of her flight and plight would have it. Her adventures and disposition are the source of delight and endearing hilarity plus of course thrills and action and drama that can only be found in a Mary McCall book.
The irrepressible “gifted” Alera, daughter of deceased Brahana, the Scottish Highlander, and English Baron Robert of Arundryde, escapes Viking slaver that her Uncle Mortimer sold her to. Of course, she had the help of her guardian angel Henry. She struggles mightily to curb the raging demon inside her as she thinks about her conniving uncle and recalls her Uncle Julian MacKay’s saying, “If a snake slithers across your path, you should kill it”. She determines to do just that as soon as she can find her way back home.
Flung up on the Scottish coast by the icy sea, Alera is propelled into a life-changing drama that is full of humor, incredible love, and a challenging contest of wills, along with dangers that make the heart pound.
Duncan Ranald, Laird of Laidirken, is a warrior, a handsome massive giant of muscle that exudes raw power. He is amazed to see a near-nude golden goddess poised to kill a wild pig. Lust races in his blood. He wants her and takes her to his home to recuperate from the trauma she has suffered. Thus begins an absolutely delightful relationship woven into a a story full of intrigues, hatreds, unscrupulous clans, along with super natural beings and powers that communicate with and give aid to Alera, “the Gifted MacKay”.
The many secondary characters add sub-plots and back story as they reveal truths and relationships that had been kept secret from Alera for many years. The meddlesome little twins are great fun to know and they do much to propel the story along. Of course, the MacKay women like Aunt Hope, Aunt Toril, and Alera bring fun, common sense, and a bit of foolishness to a time in Scottish history when many call all Scots barbarians.
The hawks Baran and Caellach (love them), Chris “The Keeper of Wisdom”, and guardian angel Henry add a magical touch to Highland Captive.
Mary McCall weaves in much of the culture, mores, and superstitions of the twelfth century British Isles, but THESE never overshadow the consuming love story of two strong personalities who find their way to true love while protecting their own.
Ms. McCall’s writing style sparkles with humor, sings with incredible love scenes, and makes the heart jump up into the throat at times when viciousness threatens to overwhelm the good. Her Highland Captive is full of action, love, and fun. DELIGHTFUL!
AUTHOR: Mary McCall is a Historical Romance writer with a great sense of humor. While this is the first book that I have read by this author, I must say that I did laugh throughout the book and yet I felt the L'AMOUR.
GENRE: Historical romance
SETTING: 12th century, England, Scotland
CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTERS: "Her mouth competes with my meanest foot soldier, she dresses like the lowest serf, she fights like a barbarian against boys twice her size, she plays with killer birds, and her manners are worse than your heathen sister". (Her father in this book could not have described her any better than that).
CENTRAL MALE CHARACTER: He is the Laird. He claims what he wants. He is a great warrior and tracker so forget trying to run away from him. He will take advantage of you while you are dreaming. His passion is blissful. You can frustrate him to the point of fun.
SYNOPSIS: She manages to jump ship and swim to land after being kidnapped by Vikings. She has managed to swim to the shores of Scotland. He is out hunting a wild boar that just ran into the woods when he sees her climb onto the beach and head into the same woods. When gallops into the woods to protect her, he finds that she has just killed the wild boar's mate. She is battered from her swim from the sea and he decides she is the most beautiful woman that he has ever seen. He takes her home and immediately decides that she "will be" his woman.
SEXUAL EXPLICITNESS: Measured from Inspirational romance (not explicit) to Erotica (hot, steamy and sizzling). How romantically and passionately “tasteful”. You decide. (Quote) “Her plea sent him over the edge. He stood upright, gripped her hips, and surged into her, burying his pulsating shaft to the hilt and causing her to take mor of him than she ever had. Ensnared by lust and goaded on by a primitive need, he ignored her strangled outcry and thrust a wild rhythm".
WHAT I LIKED: Humor. His having determined where her home would be, over and over again. She always ends up in water and talks to Henry...a lot!
WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: The end was a bit confusing. Who was what. What was who. Sisters????
I give this book (4) stars because I had no appreciation for God being mixed up in some of this. The plot was great but I found some (not all) of the dialogue between characters a bit....ummm....juvenile and repetitious? But I intend to read another book by this author.
Liked it so much I bought it twice!! (paper and digital) Im so glad I found this author! As I'm writing this review I have read all of this authors books, and I'm dying for more. I've also got my sister hooked on them. I read a few of the bad reviews, and I don't quite understand why they didn't enjoy it. But I do understand you cant make everyone love something. I loved the mystical aspects of the story. And I always love when animals are included heavily in the story. I bought this book once in kindle form, and loved it so much I had to have the paperback. I did the same with her other two books. I wanted to make sure I liked the other two before I bought the paperback version. I only do this kind of thing with books I seriously love. People mentioned the editing was very rough. I didn't notice this too much, and usually do notice these type of things. But any mistakes there were didn't take away from the story. At least not for me. Anyways, this story has humor, magic, love, and emotional highs and lows. READ THIS BOOK. Thank you Mary for such a WONDERFUL story! Cant wait for the next one.
This is a true Historical Romance. It follows the formula to a "t". Ms. McCall is a skilled writer, but I always knew where she was going -- the irresistible sexy and handsome highlander and his captive, a beautiful woman who escapes from Vikings -- she jumps off the boat and her anger propels her to shore, where the highlander rescues her. She also has special gifts -- she can heal, feel danger approach and can shoot three arrows and hit three different targets. If she gets mad enough she can take on any warrior three times her size. And the sex is endless and always miraculous. (She faints every time) But -- she's his captive -- and she's an English Lady so she can't understand why she is so attracted to him. There must be something terribly wrong with her! Every time they touch we are reminded of how wonderful they smell. He smells "spicy," even if he has run, fought, trekked through the mud, and hasn't bathed. I kept on reading even though I finally skimmed through all the detailed sex. She does a great job of the sex scenes -- but for me, lots of excitement, not much interest.
I picked up this book when Amazon sent me one of their famous monthly emails about kindle books under $5 (it was $3.99 at the time). I wasn't sure what to think when I downloaded it. I have certain expectations when it comes to highland/historical romances and have been disappointed before. I was not disappointed this time. While it's not on par with one of Moning's highlander stories (but really, who is?), it was quite enjoyable.
I was bit confused at times as the author built up other character stories for future series installments. Some parts I just didn't get. I also found out aftereards that there was a previous book in the series that probably would've been helpful to read beforehand. Other than that, I loved the story of Alera and Duncan. I liked the way their relationship developed and I especially liked how Alera was a strong heroine. I also enjoyed the humor. It was just enough but not over the top.
When I finish a book I always ask myself, "am I glad I spent money on this?" The answer here was a definite yes.
I really enjoyed Highland Captive by Mary Mccall. Alera is a great character, and I love the banter between her and Duncan. The only thing I didn't like about this book is that there are several characters who aren't really explained. There seems to be some back story that we are missing. I realized after reading this that McCall has a book called Highland Treasure that features some of the characters in Highland Captive. I wonder if reading this would clear up some of the confusion. I am glad to see that this is a series though, because I would really like to read more!
I came across Mary McCall by chance and thank goodness I did! The entire "Sister's by Choice" series is fantastic! I can't describe how much I enjoyed all three of the books in this series (5-starred them all). Absolutely loved the heroine in this book (Alera) and loved the other heroines (Faith and Hope) from the other two books. I really enjoyed the whole "gifted MacKay" plot line in the series. The entire series is well written and enjoyable. This is a MUST read series! My only complaint is that Mary McCall doesn't seem to have written any other books, which is a shame! PLEASE PUBLISH MORE!!!
What a strange book. I feel like I am missing something as there were many characters who entered or were mentioned who it seemed we should know but they'd not been in the story line before?!?!?
It's also just a very busy book. Highland romance, paranormal and a bit of adventure quest as well thrown in at the end. Yes, the banter between Alera and Duncan is great, but overall this book just left me scratching my head and looking befuddled.
This is my first Mary McCall novel and I have to say that she kept me guessing during the entire book. Although Highland Captive was a HR, there were paranormal aspects that I really enjoyed. During the entire book I was not only engaged in the plot but McCall had me laughing as well. If your looking for a HR with a twist then I definitely recommend Highland Captive.
One word.... WOW!! This book is just plain awesome. It makes you laugh; it makes you cry; and it can make you angry, but angry with the heroine or hero, not at either one. I definitely seeing this as a frequent re-read along with another of her highland book, Highland Treasure. Great job!!
I truly enjoyed this book! Sparks flow from the beginning with Vlera and Duncan. With her spoiled toughness and Duncans "I'm man and your female" attitude; it's a good set up fun, sexy funny bartering between the two.
I loved this book! I found it very entertaining especially in the banter between Alera and Duncan. At some points there was a bit of confusion but you could still go back a few pages and reread it to understand. I'm definitely going to read the next book in the series.
This one was pretty good, although sometimes in the middle of the story plots, I felt like losing some connection with some of the character but quickly, they got back in track too along with the plot. hmm
I wanted to go buy the rest of the series right away! I really enjoyed Alera and Duncan's story. The people came alve off the pages of this story set in the Highlands.
I loved this book. The story was wonderful with elements of paranormal. It captivated me from the start till the end. Well done Mary McCall, it was a book worth reading!
I loved this book. Highland Treasure with Hope was my favorite and for her to continue with the gifted McKays is awesome. I have read it about 7 times and love it every time.
