A fictional story about the choices made by a small group of people who decide that life is no longer worth living. Told through the eyes of Tom Ellis, an ex-advertising executive who, when fired from his job, finally decides to take an overdose of drugs and alcohol. Much to his surprise he ends up in purgatory. The story unfolds as to how he acclimatises to the fact that he is no longer living, that he has left his wife and two daughters, and now roams this 'middle world' until he either progresses to heaven or decides that he has made a mistake.

However, if he does decide to live...where did he leave his physical body? In a strange city and in a foreign country, he realises that he has no idea. So, having left the hotel and getting himself lost, he is presented with some uncomfortable realisations. Then he meets Louisa, a beautiful but troubled woman who holds a heartbreaking secret of her own.

Throughout the course of a single night Tom and Louisa meet and help a young man, and an even younger woman. Both of whom are also seemingly lost in this realm. This book posed some serious questions for me as I read it. I found myself wondering if there is a point to this life, or if it was all just about learning and living fully, whether there is a real point?

The ending has quite a twist and I defy anyone not to be moved but this unusual and haunting tale, of loss and rebirth. I cried a number of times and laughed out loud too...just in case you are thinking it is all too serious. No, the tale is told in a way that drew me in and I found myself having to put the book down, or read straight through it in one sitting.
