As a teenager, Mirandi Summers was a preacher's daughter, straitlaced and virginal. Joe Sinclair was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Wild, free and dangerous, Joe led Mirandi deliciously astray….
Now Mirandi's been made executive assistant to CEO Joe Sinclair—surprisingly, the bad boy's done well! But on a business trip to the chic French Riviera, Mirandi discovers Joe's devilish side isn't far beneath his new, polished exterior. Especially when Joe pulls her into his hotel room and locks the door…
This is the story of Mirandi and Joe (the heroine and hero, naturellement). They had a love affair many years back, which ended badly and left Mirandi broken hearted. Mirandi has just started working at the company Joe is CEO for, and he is surprise by the changes in her. No longer is she the shy and naive girl he once knew, instead she is mature, feisty and guarded, which he finds even more alluring. When he is desperate for an assistant for his upcoming business trip he asks Mirandi to fill in, which she reluctantly agrees to. They quickly realise their passion for one another hasn't dimmer in the years they have been apart and it't not long before they begin and affair. But their current happiness doesn't stand a chance against their issues from the past lurking not far from the surface.
I really like reunion stories and this is a great example of this. The dialogue between the characters really sparkles and I found that Anna Cleary's writing really made me believe in everything; the story, the characters, the issues etc. The passion between the characters is intense, and their story is really emotional. I do think the past pregnancy was rather crowbarred in and didn't really impact on the story instead it kind of stopped the flow. Their HEA is spectacular though, and very satisfying.
Usually I enjoy Anna’s books: the writing is decent, even though the ideas aren’t the most originals... but this one, unfortunately, just hit me in the wrong way.
I can’t stress enough how tired I am of weak females lead characters; this book could have been completely different if the heroin has just stick with her first instinct of getting out of the work who put her under the wing of the guy who had without further explanation abandoned her, 10 years later.
Instead of that, we have a insecure girl in the body of a beautiful, mature, professional woman’s - who apparently lived under a rock for the last decade of her sentimental life and that still idealizes a man who broker her heart, proving himself being exactly what the whole town thought he was.
Do I enjoy forgiving heroins? Yes, but only if it makes sense, only if I see that the forgiveness works in favor of the characters grow. This is not what happens here - It feels like the character it’s under a weird spell where, suddenly, the decision of steering clear of the “hero” (a term that I usually very loosely here), is completely forgotten - as if the fact that he decided to get into her panties again, erased the whole backstory they have.
I do enjoy a good love story, but maybe, just maybe, is time for the author to think more about the characters grow during the story, and less on how to get there quickly.
It’s not a bad stories - but they’re really pathetic characters.
to be honest, i was rather disappointed in this book. generally, i enjoy cleary's books, but this one was just hard, for me, anyway, to get into/interested in. heroine did not have much of a spine, falling into bed with the hero after 10 years of being ignored, and also after telling hero she was not going to sleep with him again. hero had typical tortured past/unable to let himself love again syndrome. oh well, going to read something else now and hope it's better than this was.
HPx156 June2011 their past is an issue in her working for his company. Business trip to the French Riviera brings out those issues and their past is a big question for both of them.
