It was fresh for the first eight Brethren on that early morning in Schwarzenau, Germany, in 1708. They were reading the Bible with new eyes. They went into the waters of baptism and came up new creatures in Christ with a vision in a new community. In this volume we celebrate that beginning with 366 devotions, one for each day of the anniversary year.
Buliding on that encounter with the Bible, each meditation lifts up the Word's freshness for our day. More than two hundred forty writers are drawn from six Brethren groups that descended from the Schwarzenau eight, and some of the countries where Brethren are in mission today.
I spent 2014 reading this devotional, published for the 300th anniversary of the Church of the Brethren, so it is several years old. What makes it wonderful is the variety of contributors, 365 days of wisdom, spirit filled commentary and stories from people connected to the Brethren tradition. Because it is several years old it includes many writings from saints who have since passed away. It was both wonderful and bitter-sweet to read reflections those days.
I started each day with the readings, and found that the rhythm of waking up and almost immediately reading the reflections for the day was the perfect way to start my day.
