Obsessed

Rate this book
Obsessed is not about obsession for a new purse or a new car. Instead, these stories sizzle with the kind of obsession that is fueled by our deepest desires, the ones that hold couples together, the ones that haunt us and don’t let go. Whether just-blooming passions, rekindled sparks, or reinvented relationships, these lovers put the object of their obsession first. From the almost-divorced couple in “Aftershocks,” by Bella Andre, who finally confess their deepest desires during an earthquake, to a woman who confesses to her boyfriend just how much she lusts after another man in Emerald's "Then," these lovers push the boundaries of their relationship and the boundaries of their trust in each other. Obsessed lovers don’t always do what is rational; sometimes they chase their dreams, such as in Kayla Perrin’s “One Night in Paris,” across the world and across the landscape of their lovers’ bodies.

Each of the nineteen stories in this anthology explores the subject of obsession—a word thrown around these days, far-removed from its truer meaning of being completely consumed and overtaken by something (or its even more extreme meaning of being enslaved to something). My GetGlue profile claims I am “obsessed” with True Blood’s Sam Merlotte, but I know this fictional character has not consumed me nor am I enslaved by him, I just think he’s rather attractive, especially with his clothes off *wink* But it is an example showing how obsession has lost some of its meaning.

Passion and boundary-pushing are the motifs of the obsessions seen in this anthology. From a woman finally confessing her love during an earthquake and another woman professing her love for another man to her boyfriend to a couple who traverse the sensual landscapes of each other while in Paris and a woman who runs into the man who hurt her but has haunted her thoughts, this book sojourns through the themes of love, longing, anger, confusion and lust with well-penned intensity. Best stories: “Here In Between” by Kristina Wright; “Concubine“ by Portia Da Costa; “Spellbound” by Garnell Wallace; “Raven’s Flight” by Andrea Dale; and “Then” by Emerald. 4/5.

Everyone has some type of obsession in their life whether it be the pursuit of a secret fantasy, or something we experience that creates the obsession that always pulses just under the surface. An anthology about obsession is perfect for readers who need or want to feel that they're not alone in their compulsions. This book covers it.

Silent Treatment by Donna George Storey

This story makes it evident that you do not need a voice to be heard. It was a good tale to begin the anthology but the obsession wasn't altogether clear. I did enjoy the anonymity of the heroine because it added a mystery to the story. It also allowed me to interpret the heroine the way I would picture her. .Based on the writing, I wasn't restricted to how the author wanted me to view her heroine.

One Night in Paris by Kayla Perrin

This story showed and even demonstrated the theme of obsession perfectly. I was completely enthralled with the storyline from beginning to end. Not only was Vivian’s obsession with her boss explored, but the author delved into her obsession with the fantasy itself. And let's face it, we all love a good fantasy now and then.

Concubine by Portia Da Costa

Even though it got of to a slow start, this story had a very interesting ending. I liked the whole "story within a story" aspect of Concubine. Additionally, these characters connected on a deeper level than the previous tales. It created a nice little romantic feeling to it.

Love and Demotion by Logan Belle

This story was all about raw animalistic sexual urges. Cat is tame during the day, but a sex kitten at night. At this point in the anthology, Love and Demotion was my favorite story. It revisited the secret obsession of sleeping with your boss. The author added a twist to the storyline that really entertained me.

Mephisto Waltz by Justine Elyot
This installment was entertaining, especially the way the author used music to build up and develop the relationship. While I am not a classical music fan, I could appreciate the correlation between emotionally connecting a good piece of music to a good piece of man candy. In the end, Lily gets to thoroughly enjoy both.

Then by Emerald

This was by far the most erotic story within the anthology. Valerie may love Chris, but her body sure wants a taste of Hayden. The reality is, even while people are in a monogamous relationship, everyones eye wanders occasionally. We cannot help but appreciate an attractive man. What's worse for the heroine,Valerie, is this attractive man is constantly being thrown in her face. The sensual tension escalates because she can't touch him ...or can she?

It’s Gotta Be Fate by Jennifer Peters
This story was not only interesting but it set itself apart from the others because of its uniqueness. It encompassed a BDSM theme with an titillating twist. Occasionally, submissives need to know what it is like to dominate someone. By the same token Doms need to experience the feel of someone else’s ties around their wrists. In this story, I get exactly that. What was better, was the hint at maybe a new beginning. This was a light BDSM story, but be prepared because it's emotionally charged.

Hooked by Ariel Graham
This tale was a bit puzzling to me. One thing that really made it difficult was the characters names being Ricki and Jody. Since both names are interchangeable between males and females, I kept forgetting who the boyfriend was and who the girlfriend was. In spite of that, I really enjoyed Ricki’s obsession. Add in the hook and I had a story that truly captured the theme of obsession. However, I would have liked to have actually seen the obsession be fulfilled in the final scene of the story. Ms. Graham needs to do a sequel.

Aftershocks by Bella Andre

Some relationships need a little jolt to get back in track. The lack of communication displayed by Celeste and Darren is a trap many marriages fall in. They are so afraid of each other’s reaction they fail to realize they both want the same thing. This highly erotic BDSM story was inspirational in more than one way. Secret Places by Adele Haze Until we fully trust someone, many of us keep our secrets to ourselves. That is what this story was about. The only drawback about this tale is the author focused too much time and energy on Dan's music playing. It took away from the the relationship development. Because it is so short, the secret was discovered using a typical technique. but ultimately I did get to see Dan and Marian reach their happily ever after. Best of all for the protagonists, there were minimal secrets going forward.

Loser by Charlotte Stein

This story inspired mixed emotions, but in a good way. One moment I was completely awed by the fact that Mallory would even be attracted to Billy in the first place. The next thing that threw me was when Mallory talked about how good he was in the bedroom. I thought, "Wow,what a catch!" I am sure this is what the author was going for and she certainly succeeded in her goal. Now, I don't think I will ever again walk past an average person and think what a loser they are.

Here In Between by Kristina Wright

'Strange mysterious man finds stranded woman on the side of the road'. It certainly sounds more like the beginning of a horror movie than an erotic tale, doesn't it? Well, not only does that sentence begin this story, it also ignited something deep inside me. You know, the part that wants to be that damsel in distress who is rescued by the knight riding on a magnificent stallion? I just hope my knight is as sexy and charismatic as the hero is in this story.

Spellbound by Garnell Wallace
This story touched me on a few emotional levels. I absolutely loved that the heroine, Kia, was able to find herself but it took her going to Haiti to do it. The nice twist was she found the love of her life while she was trying to connect with a part of herself her family denied. What I liked too was the heroine was put into a situation that was different. It inspired her to really look within for answers. What really spiced up the story were the hot erotic scenes. I'm being deliberately vague because it's a story worth reading.

Raven’s Flight by Andrea Dale

Forget the girl next door when you can have the sexy Celtic next door. Ciaran is the type of neighbor we all dream of; sexy, intelligent, and likes to walk around shirtless. I also enjoyed the link the tattoos played in Ciaran and the heroine's journey through life. I appreciate symbolism because I have always felt it adds a touch of depth to a story. The author effectively illustrated that with the use of the tattoos.

Raindrops and Rooftops by Elizabeth Coldwell
This story was a bit more sexual and the focus on obsession was not as heavy as with the previous tales. I like that it added a little bit of lightness to the obsessive side of people. Another thing that intrigued me was Keeley going to New York in search of one thing and ended up finding something completely different. For a lot of people, the scenario plays out just like that in real life. We do not realize what we are looking for until we find it.

Topiary by K.D. Grace

At first, I was a bit confused on what the author of this story was talking about, but after a few chapters, I was able to figure it out. I have heard of vajazzling, but this takes pubic decorating to a completely new level. While this story did fully explore the obsession people can have regarding a woman's parts, I did not really connect with nor fully appreciate the relationship. It seemed as if Aden only cared about one part of heroine's anatomy, and not necessarily for her as a person.

I Want to Hold Your Hand by Rachel Kramer Bussel

This story was very romantic. All Shelly really wanted to do was reconnect with her husband. While it had a strong erotic element, the story left a warm and fuzzy feeling inside by the time I finished it. Ron was eventually revealed to be the perfect husband that all husbands should be.

Storm Surge by Teresa Noelle Roberts
This story was a bit difficult for me to read. While if fully captured the obsession of the character, I just felt confused because the obsession almost trumped reality. Additionally, it was another story that I felt the couple did not really connect as deeply with each other as they could have. What came across instead was their total involvement with their mutual obsession.

Undercover Kink by Louisa Harte

This final tale was a great one to end this anthology. We all have some undercover kink somewhere buried inside, and Natalie, the heroine, had to fulfill the kink she has secretly obsessed about for a long time. What was even better is that it even fulfilled a few kinks I don't think even Natalie realized she had until that moment. It's the element of discovery that made it so worth it.

This entire anthology really displayed the many forms obsession can take. Though voluminous, this book has stories to match anyone’s needs or curiosity about obsession. Because there are so many different tales, surly everyone who reads this book will find something they love. I did.

Obsession is a theme that easily falls into stale retellings of women obsessing over sexy men to dominate them. While this anthology doesn't avoid this hazard, it has plenty of other stories that transcend into new territories of what it means to be obsessed.

Before you pick this up, you need to know the first several stories are the weakest and then it gets much, much better. There is a heavy reliance on "Perfect Man, Perfect Sex" (PMPS) and the sheer perfectness will make your eyes glaze over. PMPS can be described as a man who is everything the woman could ever want out of a partner, both physically and emotionally. That can be extra tiresome when you're talking about her obsessing over him. However, some authors can take PMPS and make them bearable as long as the woman doesn't dissolve into a puddle. That was achieved by "Here In Between" by Kristina Wright and "Raven's Flight" by Andrea Dale, both tales very sweet and mysterious at the same time.

Fortunately, not every story has PMPS waiting to give their women ultimate pleasure. Some of the more creative narrations are where the man is either submissive or not the center of the obsession. In the case of the former, you have "It's Gotta Be Fate" by Jennifer Peters and "Secret Places" by Adele Haze. For the latter, there's "Hooked" by Ariel Graham and "Topiary" by K.D. Grace. And, of course, a combination piece in "Undercover Kink" by Louisa Harte. These have a level of intrigue that goes beyond great sex with a great guy.

There are, of course, lots of other stories in this anthology to recommend, that's how much I like it. I'm not obsessed, I promise. Okay, maybe a little bit. It's a great balance of romance and sex without being too cheesy or contrived (except this one story I won't dwell on), and I enjoyed it a lot. Maybe you will too.

Sexual urges. Everyone has them, right? Men and women, alike. Well, Rachel Bussel takes these “urges” that women have, combines them with the stories of many other writers, and puts them into a collaboration of erotic, hot, steamy, passionate stories that ladies will want to read….and then crawl in bed to act upon the urges that it puts in the women’s mind.

Each of the stories held something new, but they all had the same erotic theme: sex…and lots of it. Each story is written by a different contributor but each one definitely holds enough sexual tension through the story that the reader will be left needing a fan for hours to cool off….at least this reader did.

I loved the way the collaboration was put together. It was actually more captivating than I thought it would be. Being divorced as I am…well, lets just say that this book leaves the mind REALLY working about the things that can happen if you want to fulfill that sexual urge.

While being extremely erotic, I do give this book a 4 in the rating department. It is definitely a book that will capture the attention of women…and even men, too! I’m sure there are men out there that would like a little “boost” in their readings. This is one that will go above and beyond that “boost” and I highly recommend it if you love the erotic feeling of reading a book filled with cravings and desires.

Received my First-Reads copy today, THANKS Rachel Kramer Bussel (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...)!! Can't wait to get started in on it. I hope it's as good as it sounds. I will give a review just as soon as I finish reading it...

Seriously, as I was reading this my exact thoughts were "it's like short porn clips in text format"

That being said this book was just ok for me. I understood it was a collection of stories, but I think I thought it was more along the lines of a few short stories, but in reality there was like 19 really-short-stories. It was like reading the first chapter of a book, and it even seemed that some tried to fit the whole story in that one chapter.

As for the stories themselves, there were some interesting ones, and ones I wished would have been full stories or even short-stories (just longer than they were) such as "Silent Treatment," "Undercover Kink," and "Raindrops and Rooftops." However, there seemed to be more that I didn't really care for such as "Concubine," "Mephisto Waltz," "Aftershocks," "Secret Places," and "loser" just to name a few.

It was an easy book to read. The day I started it I got about half way through it in no time, and the only reason it took as long to read as it did was because there was a few days in there where I didn't get a chance to do much reading.

A little embarrassed to say my expectations for this were low. I expected some well-edited stroke fiction. Pure sex with a smattering of pretty phrases to make me feel smarter while getting off. Instead I found some really thoughtful, heartfelt writing. It challenged me and moved me.

Not every story, mind you. In fact, one pissed me off quite a bit and represents the stereotype of bad erotica: flat writing, tepid sex, and unlikeable characters whose most interesting aspect is their movie star looks. But the fact that this story stands out is proof enough of how much I enjoyed the others.

I knew I'd misjudged right at the opening story; while I didn't love it as much as the others, the writing itself was gorgeous. It's no surprise that I enjoyed the Charlotte Stein story, but she outdid herself here. Her story, Loser, broke my heart and turned me on (with a happy ending, no worries there). Justine Elyot's Mephisto Waltz was lovely. Secret Places by Adele Haze was a nice twist on an old kinky tale. Love and Demotion by Logan Belle was funny and hot. Then by Emerald was very smart, reminded me of Cara McKenna's Ruin Me.

I have no idea if this anthology was exception or if this is to be expected from other Cleis anthos (or maybe just the ones edited by the same person), but I will definitely be trying more.

This is a good collection of erotic stories focusing on obsession. As with most anthologies, some stories were better than others. But that kind of judgment can be pretty subjective when it comes to erotica. I'm not much into romance, so the "let's spend our lives together" endings of most of these tales got a little tiring. The overall quality of the collection, however, lives up to RKB's usual high standards. So I would recommend "Obsessed" to just about anyone with an interest in erotic romance.

I was very excited when I received this book in the mail. The cover is gorgeous. The forward is by Caridad, and she is wonderful.
It is a collection of short stories based on obsessions. You will find that some stories are better then others and that will be subjective to the reader.
A great reason to pick up this book - If you're short on time but would like to read a little something erotic- help get the juices flowing- this is perfect. Browse through and see what strikes your fancy.
My husband did and I got quite the kick out of him reading the scenes out loud.

Great writing all around. I'm not usually a short story person but I read this through - twice. Rachel Kramer Bussel has put together an interesting and sexy cross section on stories reflecting obsession, sexual energy and emotional compulsion. Great read.

Great stories of love and lust. The only thing I didn't like was that they were too short! I would love for these stories to be a whole book each one.

Obsessed Anthology has quite a few short erotica stories and I have to say all has been well written. They all are hot and steamy, just the way I like it when I read erotica.

It’s normal that one story is better than the other, but I only have a weird feeling with one of the stories, but I liked all the others.

I have to say those authors done an amazing job with these very short stories, some of them had me right from the first paragraph.

Now I know why I enjoy reading anthologies, those short stories are easy to read and very entertaining. So if you are looking for some small hot sexual stories, then this is definitely the book for you.

I just finished reading "I Want it Bad", edited by Rachael Kramer Bussel. This is a collection of short erotic stories written by 19 extremely talented female writers. These tales are from the minds of women who understand how strong women react to get the satisfaction they not only desire, but need.
A running theme within these stories are the women who not only want to grab the brass ring, but hold onto it tightly no matter the cost or risk.
No story fits that description better than the one written by Kayla Perrin, author of 'One Night in Paris'. She tells the very hot tale of a strong lady who risks her job by flying to Paris to meet her boss who went there for work. Throwing caution to the wind, she risks her career by showing up unannounced in the lobby of his hotel.
The action unfolds as they start playing in the elevator and continue in his room. The scene is extremely hot and this is just one of many intense page turning moments.
'Mephisto Waltz' by Justine Elyot, 'Hooked' by Ariel Graham and 'Here In Between' by Kristina Wright were other standout favorites worthy of note. All of these stories were unique and exciting in their own way. There wasn't a weak story among them, as they all brought a sizzle that I slowly savored with each erotic word.

It's been a little while since I read an anthology, and I'm glad I decided to pick this one up. Obsessed is edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel and contains some authors well known in the erotic romance genre - Portia Da Costa, Justine Elyot, Charlotte Stein, Kristina Wright, Elizabeth Coldwell and K D Grace to name but a few. The theme, as you've probably already guessed, is obsession, and it was very interesting to see how the authors interpreted this theme in so many different ways.

There were non-speaking scenes, bosses and employees, earthquakes, car breakdowns, new neighbours, illicit and risky trysts, and much more. The variety was amazing, as was the writing. There were some stories which stood out for me, and really resonated, but overall, there wasn't a bad tale nestled between these covers. Sure, I liked some better than others, but that's always going to be the case in an anthology. I'd definitely recommend this to erotic romance fans - it's hot!

I seem to have had a run of bad luck with books lately. This book was a big disappointment to me. I love the seduction of good erotica. Maybe I'm old school, but I need a story which can stand alone without the sex to hold my attention. Pages and pages of throbbing members and damp panties just doesn't do it for me.

Sadly this was one of those books. The story lines were embarrassingly predictable, all I can say is that the editors have consistency of taste in their favor.

I'd recommend "Yellow Silk: Erotic Arts and Letters" by Lily Pond and Richard Russo as a far superior collection. There has to be something better than this out there.
