NEW PERSPECTIVES ON MICROSOFT PROJECT 2010 takes a critical-thinking, problem-solving approach to teaching Microsoft's project management software. Case-based tutorials ask you to combine project management concepts with technology skills to complete realistic assignments. After working through NEW PERSPECTIVES ON MICROSOFT PROJECT 2010, you will be prepared to transfer your skills to complete projects successfully outside of the classroom and to thrive in your professional career.
The subject matter is fairly dry but well-presented and does a great job at constructing step-by-step tutorials and review assignments that are effective towards learning MS Project. One major issue is there are drastic differences in the way report and project templates behave in this version of MS Project vs the current version available. The book is already outdated because the version MS project is no longer available, making this book essentially useless (common with all IT textbooks though). But since your school (like mine) may be several years behind in every IT subject anyway, what can you really do.
I have taken classes now in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access so I have a bit of an understanding of Microsoft programs and I get the basics of maneuvering around within a Microsoft Program. I had not worked in MS Project before and was not familiar with any of the terms associated with it. So I went into this book with a feel for Microsoft programs but no idea about MS Project specifically.
I struggled. This book had some of the most circular sentences I have ever read. For example – this is a single sentence in chapter 1: "The More Views option is available at the bottom of the View Bar as well as when you click a View button arrow on each View button in the Task View group on the View tab." Um. What? Yeah. THAT is what this book was like.
And the assignments were kind of confusing. They would have you go over things that were not covered in the tutorial (make sure you read the “ProSkills” info boxes carefully!) and the steps would sometimes be written so that you were not sure what you were supposed to be doing. Very frustrating.
I got through it, and I had no choice on whether or not I got to use this book as it was required for my class and that was that. So I assume many of you will be in the same boat. Good Luck.
