Wataru Yoshizumi (吉住渉) is a Japanese mangaka. She was born as Mari Nakai (中井 真里, Nakai Mari) on June 18, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan. She graduated with a degree in economics from Hitotsubashi University.
Yoshizumi started her career as a mangaka while working as an office lady. Her debut manga was a yomikiri (short story) called "Radical Romance" that was published in 1984, in the summer issue of Ribon Original. She is known as a social mangaka, and is a good friend of fellow mangakas Naoko Takeuchi, Ai Yazawa, Miho Obana, and Megumi Mizusawa.
Yoshizumi currently (as of 2007) has her works published in both Ribon and Chorus.
Cherish is a collection of two short stories - one going by the same name of Cherish, the other being Happiness. Although most works by author Yoshizumi Wataru are shoujo, this is one of her fewer josei works. Her art is lovely as usual but has changed to match the older characters and older audience. That being said, I do actually prefer the art she uses for her shoujo works - but that is really just personal preference as the quality certainly does not lack!
Out of the two, I preferred Happiness. Both were lovely stories but this one seemed the most different from all her other works. It is told from the perspective of a male lead, Akatsu, who falls in love with a divorced single mum. Akatsu proves to a great lead character and a very likeable guy. He's got a bit of naivety about him that's rather cute, but he is mature enough to comprehend the possible difficulties that might come along with dating a woman with child. He turns out to be great with her son and although the ending is left open, I'll keep my fingers crossed for him!
The title story, Cherish tells of university student Chihiro, who happens to cross paths with her former boyfriend who had broken up with her upon learning that her guardians are a gay couple. Although Chihiro still holds feelings for him, she refuses to be with someone who takes issues with her family. It's a cute story packed with a handful of misunderstandings and a lot less drama than the summary might lead to believe.
The problem with short stories is that they often don't last long enough for one to get truly invested. They are solid and well-told stories and certainly good for a quick read in between. Other than that, I must say the one thing that really made me go for this particular work was the gorgeous cover!
It wasn't a bad read, but the characters were flat. I never cared for any of them. Perhaps that is because the story was too rushed.
Curiously, Yoshizumi stated in another manga that she didn't care for homosexual romances, so it was surprising to see her write about a gay couple in Cherish. Their relationship was a plot device only, and not a main focus. They served to be a controversial couple to create conflict for the main character, but they were quite superficial and unremarkable. Unfortunately, all the other characters were unremarkable as well.
One nice thing about the story was the art. There were quite a few beautiful panels here and there, and that cover is absolutely lovely.
I found this manga at the thrift store and picked it up because it’s been a long time that I haven’t read a manga with the drawing style of the early two thousand and I kinda miss it (it was also very cheap lmaoo). Sadly this manga was just not good at all, full of cliche and very flat.
Cherish is a manga compiling two titles Cherish, the main story and Happiness.
In Cherish, the main character Chihiro, grew up with a gay couple. After graduating she finally goes to university and there she join a cine club where she met her ex boyfriend again who dumped her years ago because her parents were a gay couple (yeah yeah you read that right). The gay couple was cute but apart from that this short story felt like an eternity to read, the characters aren’t well written, flet very flat and the “plot twist” isn’t a plot twist because honestly who was surprised to know that it wasn’t him who wrote that letter but his neighbor ?!
Happiness, is about a men who falls in love with a divorced single mum. This second story was just boring from start to finish, for the first time in my life I skipped pages in a manga. In the middle of this short story something happened and the woman goest to excused herself to the main character and the guy just say to her, "kiss me and I forget” BROTHER EWWWWW get your nasty, crusty, dusty lips away and fuck off.
Overall I think this manga aged very poorly and was just not for me.
From the creator of "Ultra Maniac", Yoshizumi Wataru.
This work comes with two stories, named respectively as "Cherish" and "Happiness". Both of em' premised some decent stories. Although, personally I liked the first one.
Definitely, didn't fall into those convoluted drama tropes. Some may find the characters boring but I find em' very refreshing and unpretentious as well as their interrelationships felt natural.
The artwork is pleasant to look at, as it fits with the story's light-hearted tone.
A short but satisfying rom-drama with some slice of life themes. Neither too serious nor too easy but just the right balance in-between them.
I love Yoshizumi's shoujo stuff, but I've never read any of her ladies manga before (in fact, I didn't know she wrote ladies at all until I saw this). I don't know if she's written any more, but if she has, I hope I can get my hands on it, because this was awesome.
There are two stories. The first is about a girl whose mom dies when she's three and she's then raised by her mom's best friend and his partner. Flashforward to when she's in college, where she's reunited with a boy she broke up with in jr. high because he couldn't accept her gay dads. If I had known that's what the story was about, I would have read it a lot sooner! Gay supporting characters aren't too rare in shoujo, but I've never seen one where the parents were gay (outside of BL). It's great to see casual positive portrayals like this in manga.
The second story was about a guy who falls for a woman who has an eight-year-old son and tries to convince her that he's not put off by her being a single mom. This was a cute story, too.
Chihiro's mom died whens he was 3, and since then she was raised by her Mom's best friend and his partner.
Now she's 18 and attending the same school her Mom and adoptive father did. On the first day, she runs into her first boyfriend, who dumped her back in middle school after she told him that her parents were a gay couple.
Or did he? because he's under the impression that SHE is the one who dumped HIM!
Like I said, sweet story. It doesn't go on and on, and it's nice. Even though there is no huge character development, I still like all the people involved.
Been a while since I've read Wataru Yoshizumi's work. The last would probably... Kimi Shika Iranai? But because of this one I've reread Kimi Shika Iranai, and Spicy Pink. I just think that Yoshizumi can elaborate from a simple plot very well. It's refreshing to see the view of Japanese society on gay couple through this manga.
