A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

I know what I'm doing.

description

Do you, Mr. Moon Knight? Do you really?
Because I don't think you do.
I think you're a jackass mental patient with a penchant for getting your ass handed to you by everyone you meet.
While wearing a white outfit.
Why? Why are you wearing white?! Idiot!
Dirt, road grease, and all of the random gore (from your multiple ass-kickings) will be impossible to get out!
I don't give a shit what the Oxyclean guy says, nothing gets copious amounts of blood out of fabric.

And, to top it off, you suck with the ladies.

So 'supposedly' the Egyptian moon god Khonshu raised you from the dead.
And...what? Was that it?
*insert Khonshu doing mythical/magical stuff*
And Rama Lima Ding Dong, bitch! You're alive!

Ok. So if this moon god took the time to keep your sorry ass from dying, there must have been a reason. He must have expected you to do something important, and given you special abilities to go with your new lease on life, right?
Well, as far as I can tell, the only thing Khonshu gave you was a trio of imaginary friends.
Or maybe you already had that *cough* ability.

I'm not sure how I feel about this title. In all fairness, it didn't suck.
I guess I just expected...more?
Especially after reading Jeff, 'kris, and Mike's reviews.
Also, every time I talked to Jeff, he was like, "Hulk loves Bendis' Moon Knight! Hulkity, Hulkity, Hulk. Hulk. Hulk. Moon Knight yummy! Hulkity, Hulk, Hulk.".
Swear to God, that's what he sounds like.

*gak* KIDDING! *gak*

My point is fuck you! I have a point! that I can see why nobody knows who this guy is, but I'm also going into volume two with hope that Bendis can make me care about this whack-a-doodle.
I mean, there were moments in this where I was so into it that I was sure I was going to love it and then the love just slid through my fingers like all of the unrealized dreams from my youth.
Plus, there were plenty of chuckles along the way.
So. Definitely not a total loss, or a garbage comic.
But something was missing for me. At the end of it, I felt too much of a disconnect with the characters for it to be a true winner.
Much like Marc Spector, I'm a bit conflicted.

Poor Marc Spector. He’s in Hollywood producing a TV show loosely based on his superhero exploits as Moon Knight. It’s a terrible show, but still probably way, way better than Agents of SHIELD.* He’s also a third-rate superhero, who’s also suffering from multiple personality disorder. In this case, he believes he’s talking to Spider-Man, Wolverine and Captain America when he needs superhero advice.

He invades a strip club dressed as Spider-Man (the costume is worn over his Moon Knight outfit) and is rescued by fellow super-hero Echo (who jettisoned the Bunnymen years ago). Echo was working undercover as a stripper. They team up.

This is the first in a two volume set by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Bendis does a nice job giving a fresh and humorous spin on a B-List superhero. Recommended.

*The show got better. Much better.

An interesting and mostly unknown Avenger (except to the big fans) who suffers from a number of problems. One in particular was presented well. I couldn't tell what was likely going on until it came out in the story.

OVERALL GRADE: B plus.

Second read: now that the Bendis hype has passed, I can see a little more clearly. This is a good Bendis book, but not a great Moon Knight book. Even though there’s all the “Avengers as Spector’s alternate personalities” as an expression of his psychosis, it’s still a little too…above-board.

Not once has MK strung up a dude with a hook-and-chain.

No avatars of self-doubt or arrogant subjugation.

Just some pretty normal supes, goons and villains, with a side of inner monologue. And while for Bendis that’s a step up, for MK this feels a little like the 80’s stories - with much better art.

Gotta admit tho, Spector in LA filming a TV series about Khonshu *has* to be the most spot-on way to prepare for the Disney+ series that starts this week.

==Original review==
I've read most of the recent Moon Knight writers, and they've all done a good job of illustrating just how batsh*t crazy Marc Spector really is, and how he deals with the constant push-pull of all that split personality.

Bendis does a stellar job of continuing that work, and making it believable - not the constant torture of the demons day and night, but pulling on Marc just when he's running internal monologue. Like we all do, only this is a bit more...pronounced.

I really like the tightrope that Bendis has Spector walking here - not entirely beat down, not completely off any ability to plan and strategise, and self-aware enough to be able to keep folks on his side when he does crazy. But also just off-balance enough that he's not predictable, and enjoyably weird and not in a terribly charming way.

I had no idea about the villains - don't know if they're new or just old relics that Bendis & Maleev dug up to entertain and amuse.

Maleev's art is very fluid - tells the whole tale at one glance, so it's tempting to breeze right through the book without paying attention. When I took a breath to look back and admire the careful flow & drama that Maleev weaves in to his beguiling art, it's clear he's a lot more savvy about storytelling than just a stylised scribbler.

Having only read Charlie Huston and David Finch’s take on Moon Knight in “The Bottom”, I didn’t have the best opinion of Moon Knight - a schizophrenic drug addict saved from death by an Egyptian God and tasked with saving lives dressed in white decorated with Ancient Egyptian paraphernalia. The character seemed contrived and Moon Knight/Marc Spector was too intensely troubled to be relatable or sympathetic. Enter Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. While Maleev is arguably Finch’s equal in art (though the two have different styles), Bendis is the best writer Marvel has and easily more entertaining than Huston.

In Volume 1, Marc Spector has relocated to Los Angeles and become a TV producer of a show based on his life until Captain America, Spider-man and Wolverine appear and remind him of his duties as Moon Knight. MK begins his fight against this mysterious LA Kingpin and comes into possession of Ultron’s head. But Spector’s mental issues remain untreated and who’s to say what’s real and what’s not?

While I thought Bendis made Spector infinitely more likeable and funny, I’m still not convinced of MK as a superhero. It seems he can just about hold his own in a fight and that’s about it. His get-up seems a bit silly and his own personal quest is obscure and unconvincing. The villains he fights are pretty laughable and when he finally confronts the LA Kingpin, it’s underwhelming mostly because MK is able to defeat him quickly and easily without any trouble.

That said, it’s not a bad story. It reads a bit like a LA Noir detective story with Moon Knight as protagonist and definitely has its moments. Having a superhero who’s actually diagnosed as crazy is quite unique (though Bendis makes the salient point that all superheroes are crazy for even putting on a costume and doing what they do) and affords Bendis narrative texture you won’t find in his work on Spiderman or Daredevil. But this is only half the story with the arc concluding in Volume 2 so reading just Volume 1 is a bit unsatisfying. It’s a good start to a difficult character to bring into the mainstream but Bendis and Maleev have made a fine effort to do just that.

I've always been a big fan of Moon Knight, but lately it seems like the writers just try to see who can make him the craziest. In this volume, the creative time is Bendis and Maleev, who had a great run on Daredevil. The art is still very good, the story doesn't match up the the Daredevil run (but that was a really good run, so that's not surprising.)

Moon Knight is on the west coast producing a TV show based on his life. His newest psychosis is his split personalities are Wolverine, Spiderman and Captain America. He even uses webshooters and claws. A new kingpin is setting up shop on the west coast and hes somehow come into possession of Ultron's head, which ends up in Moon Knight's hands. Echo is working undercover but Moon Knight blows her cover so they team up. (Echo is smoking hot in this series, great job by Maleev on this interpretation of her.)

Overall it's not bad, just not really good either. I like it but I sort of like Moon Knight just a little less crazy. If you're a Moon Knight fan, or Bendis and Maleev fan, it's still worth checking out.

A solid read but not my favorite. Moon Knight is nuts. He hears voices, hallucinates, fights villains way above his ability. But he's funny, or at least he tries to be.

One thing this seriously lacks is mythology, considering how "alternative" the character. There a few pages of flashback but largely his origin is skipped, which I feel most people don't know about. Moon Knight instead feels more like a mental patient than a vengeful spirit.

I don't love the artwork. Occasionally it can be stark and admired, especially with the white of Knight's costume, but mostly it's rough and hard to comprehend. Nothing like the clean lines of Declan Shalvey in Warren Ellis' version.

I also found the characterization/dialog a bit weird. Moon Knight is nothing like how Ellis wrote him, which was stoical and quiet, sometimes joking in a mystical way. If anything this guy reminds me of Guy Gardner's bravado, Batman's brooding, and Wolverine's humor. And like Wolverine's humor, it's supposedly edgy but mostly sarcastic and inappropriate, self-indulgent. He seems to lack purpose, too, a larger Why. So the Egyptian God wants him to make the world a better place, okay, well so does every teenage beauty queen. What it comes down to is a lack of sympathy for Moon Knight. And it's because the story skips his background.

The dialog for the other characters felt...I don't know if rough is the right word. Unrefined? Predictable? For the Avengers it was just uncharacteristic. I've read enough Wolverine to know that's not what he sounds like. I haven't read, well, I guess any Spider-Man. Does he say "dude" that much?

So it's an okay read, a swell time killer, but maybe try Warren Ellis instead if this doesn't impress you.

Pretty weird. I didnt mind Bendis with this one and the art is great as always. I just sometimes felt like Moon Knight couldn't hold his own in fights and question his usefulness at times. Small gripe but otherwise solid. Probably not the best MK run Ive read

This was full of crazy. I'm not talking about Grant Morrison type crazy "I don't understand what he just happened" shit. I'm talking about the fact that the main character talks to voices in his head, and is completely ok with it.

And you know what? It was freaking awesome!

I've never read any Moon Knight before, or much Marvel if I'm being completely honest...don't shoot me I'm making a conscious effort here! I had heard some really cool things about this character so I thought I'd give it a go, sure glad I did too.

Mark Spector is Moon Knight, or is it the other way round? Either way he's a few cards short of a full deck. He teams up with Wolverine, Spider-Man and Captain America to hopes of taking down a mysterious new kingpin of the L.A underground. The thing is, that their all just voices in his head. Now I thought this was a winning element in this book. He has conversations with himself when trying to hatch a plan, with Wolverine being his angry, f@&k everything side, Captain America being his good moral compass and Spider-Man being his comical "let's have some fun while we're at it" side. This also worked well when most people around him can tell he's not all there in the head. At least for me it made a nice change from the normal.

I'll be honest, the first reason that made me want to check out Moon Knight was because he got referred to as Marvels Batman...I really didn't see it, like at all! Is it that he goes out at night, is brutal and chucks little moon shaped "baterangs"? Cause that's the only similarities I can see here. Aside from the fact that everyone else sees Moon Knight as a second stringer, his personality couldn't be different. Anyway, people should stop comparing the two cause it's ludicrous.

If you feel like something with a bit of a unique flare ten pick this one up. I'm bummed this was such a short run, but I hear great things about the latest series. Let's hope I can find Volume 2 around somewhere!

Ah so this is why people like Bendis, I was beginning to think I was the only comic book fan on the planet that wasn't completely head over heels for everything with his name on the cover.

Man what a batshit crazy dude Marc Spector is but he still somehow manages to not completely show it to the other Avengers. I mean they get whiffs of it here and there and handle him w/ kid gloves at times but if they only knew how bonkers he really is they'd throw him in a padded cell. I think that's what I enjoyed the most about this is he's random conversations with himself and the way he tries to act sane around the other Supes that randomly pop in to check on him. Also I'm not sure who this Echo chick is but I enjoyed her moxie as well.

Really weak compared to what Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz did with the original Moon Knight. A superhero with multiple personality disorder instead of a secret identity is a great idea until you make those other personalities super heroes, as well. He used to be Moon Knight, Jake Lockley, Stephen Grant and Marc Specter, and never sure who he really was. Now he also thinks he's Spider-man, Wolverine and Captain America, too? Just stupid in my opinion. Maybe Brian Michael Bendis writes too many titles every month for any of them to be any good. Would have been 1 star but Alex Maleev's artwork seemed like he was trying something new and paying homage to Sienkiewicz, so I enjoyed that.

I don't know much about Moon Knight, but Bendis really didn't help change that or make me give much of a shit, even though Alex Maleev did some great art for this volume.

So here's what I did learn: Apparently Mark Spectre is crazy. Okay. And he's a bit of a douche, as well as a piss-poor actor. Got it. I thought the Marvel-verse already had Simon Williams covering those bases, but I suppose there's always room for more. And what else? Well, if he has any superpowers besides schizophrenia, I don't know what they are. He's got a cool costume with a cape, though, and he likes to leap around. So minus the acting, he's kind of like Batman, I guess. Except he's not smart enough to make his own tech, so there's Buck for that. Wait, don't we already have a "Buck" in the Marvel-verse? Sigh...

Count Nefaria turns up here, and it seems he's been eating his Wheaties because he's a super-powered big bad now, and not the prissy dick with a monocle he was the last time I saw him in X-Men #94. And wasn't that a helluva long time ago? Yes, it was.

Some things never change, though. Nefaria still wears a monocle, and he's still a colossal dick. And he still kills people. Back in X-men #95, it was John Proudstar. Now it's Maya Lopez. Sorry, that was a spoiler. But seriously, Chris Claremont is a much better writer than Brian Bendis. Just sayin'.

There's no knowing what you're going to get when you jump into a Moon Knight comic. The personalities in Marc Spector's head seem to have taken a vacation--only to be replaced by some very familiar Avengers. As Marc tries out a new approach to superheroing, he is far from his usual allies and stumbling up against a mysterious enemy with a sinister plan. With help from Echo, Moon Knight will have to find a new path against a villain that may be well out of his league while also managing himself. With Bendis's snappy writing and Maleev's art, this is superhero action as only Moon Knight delivers it.

Moon Knight is a new comic book hero for me, but I find I like him quite a bit. I like the concept of his identity, and the fact that he is in fact, suffering from what appears to be schizophrenia, in that he hears voices talking to him. At first, I didn't get it when Wolverine, Spider-man, and Captain America show up to give him a pep talk. I thought they were there in real life! Nope, they are a manifestation of his mental condition.

Also, I liked how this book shows how the Avengers were building up their West Coast hero roster, since some of the crime outfits were fleeing the Eastern seaboard for greener pastures.

And the coolness escalates when Marc (Moon Knight) recruits an ex-Avenger, Echo (real name Maya) who is deaf and Latina. His gadgets man is an ex-SHIELD agent who is black. I appreciate cultural diversity enormously. I'm a black woman, and I can tell you from experience that many comic book and movie geeks are black, and we like to see people who share our culture/background in the genre.

Moon Knight definitely knows how to kick butt. He relies on his physical adeptness, fighting skills and gadgets to do his thing. On Marvel Wikia, he's described as Batman with mental illness. I can see where they are coming from with that.

The art was really well well done. It has rustic feel that I liked, and it uses plenty of shading. This adds to the noir feel of the storyline.

I am happy to keep up with this series. Marc Spector is a distinctive kind of hero, some traits recognizable to other big heroes, but others off the beaten path. I like that he's a big time actor who uses his income to finance his crime fighting activities.

Overall rating: 3.5/5.0 stars.

The writing is crazy-good.
The art is insane,
though in a way more comic-booky than Maleev's previous work in Daredevil.
And yes our hero Moon-Knight is a few suits short of a full deck,
and that is why this was so much fun!

Moon Knight by Bendis and Maleev is really a page turner. I found it easy to read in how much I enjoyed it as I was going issue to issue. It has no problems there. The primary problem I think is that it relies so much on the larger Marvel universe to tell a Moon Knight story that all the elements I enjoy about it come from other characters.

The rub is that Moon Knight is not in New York. He's in L.A. and by some standards he's etched it out as his hero territory, so the villians who have etched it out as theirs are his responsibility or "duty" and the story is about that struggle and learning who the key crime players are and how they want to use these insane Avengers level tech to do street crime.

Sound familiar? Because it is a little bit. The premise of this was is similar to the drug of choice in Bendis' Daredevil run, also drawn by Alex Maleev. By no means a bad thing it's just done better there.

The good things about it are it's easy and fun to read with large roles by other heroes of the Marvel universe. The art is amazing, Alec Maleev's Moon Knight may be my favorite but I also love his style because it's so well suited and paired with the tone of how it's written that I don't want to see it anyway. The voices in his head are cool.

The bad is that the narrative is a bit typical, but it does do something neat that you find out at the end of the first issue that's a change of pace from other Moon Knight comics I've read. Also other characters are too prominent to the point I feel like Moon Knight and Marc Spector are overshadowed. Like Echo is in this title and I love seeing her, I'm more interested in what's going on with her and wish this was a story from her perspective. Her abilities are also not utilized like they are when she was written by David Mack which is a bummer.

Also it establishes Marc's job and only really brings it up when it can be used to drive the plot forward which is good, but also to make fun of Moon Knight for selling out which became stale after the second time.

It's fun, well drawn, an interesting story, and lots of other Marvel characters show up so you don't have to miss them for too long.

*** I'm going to talk about one element that may be considered a spoiler here even if it's at the end of the first issue so this is the warning.***

Moon Knight's inner voices are other heroes this time instead of the usual Egyptian gods and that's well handled. A large part of why I call it fun because you eventually see those characters for real and the difference in voice is pretty on point and something I like about this volume.

I picked up a copy of this 2011 collection in anticipation for the upcoming television show on Disney+, hoping to learn more about Moon Knight and his background. Being an avid fan of comic books, I have the feeling that reading this with more knowledge of the base character might have been a different experience--as it stands, I had a fun time delving into the world of the self described "third-rate" avenger.

What I loved: Getting to see Moon Knight manage living with alternate personalities--in the forms of Spider-man, Captain America, and Wolverine no less-- unbeknownst to those around him. I felt like Brian Michael Bendis most succeeded in bringing their separate personalities, quirks, and humor to life, creating great dialogue and fun sequences, even if all in the head of Marc Spector. For those who enjoy comics and might be in a similar boat as me, it feels a little like getting to know Moon Knight with the help of your friends, these characters who need no introduction.

The visuals! Super compelling and gritty images that often kept me from progressing through this story efficiently, purely because I had to stick around and check out the gorgeous artwork.

Side Characters: This collection's most significant supporting hero comes in the form of Maya Lopez, aka "Echo", whom just recently had a great feature in last year's Hawkeye miniseries. I loved getting to see her be a part of this story, even if it wasn't always how I wanted it to be. It's clear she's going to be important to the MCU with her upcoming stand alone series.

What I didn't love: Sitting here after finishing the last page, I guess I was hoping for more. I had a fun experience, but I feel like the potential here sizzled out by the time I got to the end. With where comics can take us in this day and age, fun isn't always enough. A few key moments initially seemed like they might give us more, but I never found the depth of emotion I was looking for. I have read some feedback that this version of Moon Knight doesn't quite exude the personality of the original character that most people know and love, so I am tentatively excited to explore more and find out for myself.

Overall, a great introduction to the character from the work of a solid team (Bendis and Maleev). Excited to explore this character more! 3.5/5.

I wanted to love this because I'm a fan of Moon Knight but this was just a lot of disappointment. Here we have Marc and his alters but this time they are in the form of Captain America, Spider-man, and Wolverine. Sounds like a fun idea right? Him taking their characteristics and using them in fights and at one point even dressing up as one of them but I just didn't like it at all. Maybe I just didn't like other heroes being his alters instead of just him and the bois. Plus we didn't even get any Mr Knight so what is the point? I like it when Marc and his alters talk to each other and trade places and this had a little but the fact it was other Avengers made it not so fun, idk.

Also he didn't use any Captain America fighting at all? He did Spider-man shit and web shooters along with Wolverine claws but Cap got nothing smh.

They did manage to show how nuts Moon Knight is lol. There is a part where he had dressed up as Bullseye to test someone's loyalty and it was just??? You good man?? Plus the part where he wore a Spider-man suit over his Moon Knight suit was wild. It is just superhero costumes all the way down.

The plot was literally just there is a kingpin in LA and Moon Knight has to stop them. Along the way he blows Echo's cover and they decide to work together. I really liked Echo and Moon Knight team up though. Marc is into her because she's a badass. He tries to kiss her, she decks him, and it was flawlessly done romance.

The night shift, whatever it was squad that show up were all so goofy it was so hard not to look away. They deadass felt like Spongebob and his friends trying to be superheroes but just hired villain version. Their costumes were so bad and I'm cringing just thinking about how badass they thought they looked on the page where they appear out of nowhere to pose.

I didn't like the art at all. It was very jagged and pencil lines and not my thing. Plus there were a lot of double page spreads and I will forever hate those for how annoying they are to read on a tablet.

I wanna give three stars just for Echo and Marc but then I think how Echo is in her underwear almost the entire time she was here and how the bad guys were goofy and I simply cannot.

[Reading the oversized hardcover, but reviewing each arc separately - see review for volume 2 for my thoughts on the run as a whole]

I am so torn on this. I actually like it a lot more than I expected. I have a LOT of gripes with it, but it's been a really fun run once I got past how ridiculous the premise is and how out of character MK is. Bendis doesn't quite understand MK and he treats mental illness very poorly. His Bendis-speak (which I generally like) gets pretty bad at times, kinda funny at times, and kinda meta at times. Even while suspending disbelief, some things are just a bit too much, especially the Echo (almost) romance. Maleev's art makes this book a lot more enjoyable, even though he did have a sequential fumble at one point (but like everything else in the book, for better or worse, it could be dismissed by the fact that Marc is portrayed as a very crazy person, somewhat in poor taste). Despite all my gripes, I gotta give this first half a 7/10 (6.5 rounded up due to the art). I really want to give it a lower rating because I find a lot of stuff in the book insulting and disrespectful to the character, and to mental illness, but I can't deny how much I'm enjoying it as a whole.

Was really into this early and then as the story started to fit more and more into some elements of the larger Marvel universe (leading into Age of Ultron) which I found to be meh. Madame Masque and Count Nefaria could be interesting villains if they felt more than two dimensional. Spector steals the show with a good supporting cast of Echo and Buck Lime. I definitely feel like you have to be willing to go along with the emotional stakes being tied to the death of an indigenous woman and then also not be bothered by some of the weird talk around Spector’s schizophrenia. I would purport to know how to handle this more tastefully and I think there’s a line where people are shitty for calling Moon Knight crazy and some of those people are characters we’re rooting for so…it would be great to see that improved. From what I’m hearing, the new Disney+ show is making those efforts. Always great to see diversity (racial, cognitive, inclusivity, etc), but I think this could tell the same story with some of the less inclusive elements stripped.

It's 4.5 so I rounded up. I love Bendis's take on Avengers but hated his Daredevil work, so I'm not just a shrill. I really enjoyed his take on Marvel's resident crazy person.

Moon Knight has left NY once again to set up shop in LA. Here he is producing a TV show about his life while keeping his eyes on a new Kingpin who's popped up on the West Coast. It's a tight 12 issue run that gives the reader a satisfactory journey through Marc Spector's mind.

Love the guest stars and the return of one of Bendis's creations - Echo. I love her.

If you only read one collection after Huston's run to get a feel for the character, this is the one.

Mé první setkání s Moon Knightem. Přišlo mi, že ta postava prostě funguje.

Leave it to Bendis to ruin a great character for you.
