I read this on the flight to South America — and couldn't put it down. S. Zafon's characterizations are rich, and make me thankful I'm not coming of age again! The storyline, while complex, is chock full of surprising twists and turns (depicted realistically). I enjoy the structure of his writing, recognizing an artistic way with words that doesn't overwhelm his intent, but enhances it.
It has been a very long time since I've read a "new-to-me" author I've enjoyed this much, and I heartily recommend this book if you're looking for an original, beautifully colored suspense. I look forward to reading more of Zafon's work.
That is one of the greatest book I ever red. I have never heard about Zafon before, but in the meantime I red almost all I find from him. Its gothic, fantasy, love and life in one. Please more
I thought Gothic novels died with Honore de Balzac, and then I picked up Zafon. Shadow of the Wind was the first book written by Zafon that I read and let me tell you, beginning wasn't easy. For some reason it felt like a chore getting through first two chapters but I'm so glad I did because afterwards I was not able to put this book down. It has everything, magic, love, tragedy, philosophy and the best thing is that unlike work of Paolo Coehlo (whom I hate with passion)is not pretentious and soppy. My only problem was with technicality, Zafon sometimes rushes through the story, kind of like he wants to wrap up suddenly even though he's been thorough and patient in other parts. You can tell he's extremely passionate writer although not necessarily skilled one when it comes technical parts, never mind though. He's given me emotional orgasm, his imagination and its use in story lines is captivating and for the first time I cried like a baby after finishing the last page. Hugely recommended!
While the author is 'young' in his writing, I enjoyed the book . The style of writing-a bit of latin fiction mixed with a bit of mystery worked. The circles in the book were fun; the story of the book is mixed with the story of a book read by the main character, which is mixed with the story of the author of the book read-a bit confusing but no so as you read it.
Amazing book that taught me much about the era of the Civil War and World War II, as well as the mood during the early days of Franco. An engaging story that has many narratives within the main story that are all compelling. A solid read that teaches much about Spain and human nature.
I loved the setting in Barecelona, Spain. The authors images and language were facinating as were the main characters. A little history, friendship, growing up and some fantasy. Fun!
It is a very good book. it captures you, with a lot of persons, places and descriptions. It's a story that will make you laugh, be scare, and even cry.
Beautiful, poetic. Amazing that it was such a gorgeous read even after translation. Intriguing stories within stories, that link up in unexpected ways.
