Feeding Off Despair, Deceit, and Dreams. Abandoned at birth, conceived from a vicious assault on her mother, left on the steps of an orphanage, is just the beginning trials that Precious must face from her past. Teased and mocked by the children in the orphanage, she is called half-n-half. She finds her first love only to lose him. Her second love turns out to be something totally different from what she expected, another disappointment. The third time appears to be the charm until new obstacles surface within this relationship. Other misfortunes occur which she must face and conquer as she forges her future and overcomes her tribulations in life. Touched by life's uncertain events, James, Precious' son learns that life is not always so easy. He encounters his own despair, suffering, disappointment, and a dashing away of part of his dreams to shape his own future. He is finally forced to reveal a long-kept childhood secret to an unsuspecting friend. He continues to evaluate his relationship with a long-time friend whom has become a dangerous person with the potential of jeopardizing the safety of James' family.

I really don’t know why or how, but I have gotten a slew of deep, thought provoking novels lately, “Tribulation Point” is another one. I want to get right to the synopsis of the novel: “Abandoned at birth, conceived from a vicious assault on her mother, left on the steps of an orphanage, Precious must also face many other trials from her past. Teased and mocked by the children in the orphanage, she is called "half-n-half." She finds her first love only to lose him. Her second love turns out to be something totally different from what she expected, another disappointment. The third time appears to be the charm until new obstacles surface within this relationship. Other misfortunes occur which she must face and conquer as she forges her future and overcomes her tribulations in life. Also touched by life's uncertain events, James, Precious' son, learns that life is not always so easy. He encounters his own despair, suffering, disappointment, and a dashing away of part of his dreams to shape his own future. He is finally forced to reveal a long-kept childhood secret to an unsuspecting friend. He continues to evaluate his relationship with a long-time friend who has become a dangerous person with the potential of jeopardizing the safety of James' entire family. “ The material covered in the novel is deep and cutting. To say that this ride is as good as any rollercoaster ride I have been on is understatement. Ricci Lane goes deep into the mind and provides us with a social commentary not many would dare make, or attempt. That is part of the power of this novel, its strength in the face of adversity and how it deals with it, how it describes it, and how the characters arrive at the answers they seek or avoid them. “Tribulation Point” is not a novel I would suggest for everyone. If you are looking for a challenge, something that may make you look hard at yourself in the mirror when finished reading it, challenge your thought system and core beliefs, make you take pause and ponder the many different viewpoints of the characters then go ahead, enjoy this novel, I did. I applaud the risk takers and those that try to stretch the fabric of storytelling. I think that if Ricci Lane watered down his novel to make it more mainstream, more middle of the road, he would have lost his voice and the novel would have just been a cookie cutter version of itself. Tribulation Point was such a heart-breaking story, that had me gripped from the first page, until the very last! I didn't know what to expect of this book because I hadn't heard anything about this book prior to reading it. This story is completely heartbreaking and eye-opening at the same time.
Jame's mother Precious was a result of a vicious attack on her mother, and was left abandoned at an Orphange, where she was constantly made fun of due to her mother being black and her rapist father being white, the kids all joked and called her half-and -half. She later has a son named James and although the father is non-exsistant, Precious does everything in her power to give James the life she never had. James learns that life isn't always easy, and infact it can be tragic and heartbreaking at times.
This story twists and turns with different emotions, i was happy, inspired, devastated, and enlightened all at once. Although predjudice is not something i've readily had to deal with in my generation. I know that people still have reservations when it comes to mixed couples, but the fact of the matter is, that it happens, people are free to fall in love with whomever they fall in love with, and it's sad that there are still people out there that think its wrong, and will do anything they can to keep different ethnicities seperated. I honestly feel like this is a book that anyone would enjoy, it's definitely adult in nature, but I think anyone, from any background would benefit greatly from this book.
I was contacted by the author to read and review this book, but all statements are my own thoughts and opinions, and I am not being componsated for this review.
I had a have to be honest....I had a hard time getting through "Tribulation Point". The story focuses on Precious, the mother, and James, her son, and their life....obstacles and how they overcame them. Unfortunately, I felt that this type of book has been written many times before, and there was nothing new about it at all. I kept hoping for something that would make it special, but I was disappointed.
Well, I finished it. There were too many problems with character development, plot, and grammar to give it more than 2 stars. See my blog for full review and giveaway http://www.girl-who-reads.com/2011/07...
I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads and am so happy that I did. This story pulls at your heartstrings and has you stuck to every word from the first page. Definitly recommend it for anyone looking for a deep thought provoking read.
