Peter Drucker is arguably the most influential architect of today's corporate society. Yet no concise overview of his life and work has ever appeared--until now. Creating a Drucker primer as much as a biography, Jack Beatty has distilled the essence of Drucker's beliefs and strategies into one engaging volume. Spanning Drucker's childhood in Vienna during the first world war, through his first American teaching jobs when raging factions debated the best form of government (if any), to his immersion in modern management theory using General Motors as a model, and finally, to the era of downsizing facing his Fortune 500 clients, The World According to Peter Drucker also captures our own corporate evolution in this century.
Peter Drucker is one of those 'household names' in the business world when it comes to management gurus. This is a not bad biography that puts Drucker's life and ideas into context...the context of managerial capitalism...
Too self indulgent of a writer. I can’t get into the world of Peter Drucker because I can’t get over the admiration the author has of his idol. But I had not learned enough about Peter Drucker to be this fascinated about each pieces of his writing yet. I have immense respect for the man, but this is not a good biography befitting the man, I got so lost 20+ pages in because it’s all quoting obscure writing and facts of his and I can’t see the trees without seeing the forest first.
This is an essential read to anyone in management, "knowledge work," and/or consulting. To understand the values and background of the most influential thought leader in this space -- essentially inventing all 3 -- is crucial to understanding how we got to where we are in these industries and, most importantly, to help brighten the path to where we're going.
