New Beginnings on Railway Lane is a gorgeous story of love and second chances.
Katy and Ryan were wonderful main characters - both at a crossroads in their lives, their meeting was definitely fortuitous. I loved the slow build of the chemistry between them and the other characters involved in the story were wonderful additions.
The railway itself sounded the perfect setting and linking with the idyllic village of Cranfield was a nice reminder of previous books and settings in the series.

It wasn't a bad read, but it was typical and generic in every way: story, setting, characters, writing, typos, etc.

Nothing made it to stand out among the hundreds of books churned out by the romance book factory, but good enough for an easy, undemanding read.

This was a lovely and cosy read, perfect for the cooling temperatures. I loved the characters and found myself trying to spot which minor personalities will feature in the future novels.

Sherlock is great at creating such idyllic settings: I loved Cranbridge and Cranfield, with its lavender fields, sounds just as pretty. Familiar faces from the previous book and the other series do make an appearance which is a bit of a treat if you have already read these stories.

In this story, busy business woman, Katy, arrives in Cranfield after drunkenly applying for a job advert that insisted on good organisation skills. Yet, the sight that greets her was nothing she was expecting: piles upon piles of train memorabilia and barely any space to move. Not only that, the railway station is falling into disrepair – as Katy discovers to dismay. Thinking that she can quickly get the job done and move back into the hospitality business with a new city job, Katy doesn’t anticipate falling in love – both with the place and the station’s son, Ryan.

I liked immersing myself in the community spirit of Cranfield – exactly what I have come to expect from Sherlock’s novels. I thought this story was just as good as her others and I loved seeing Katy’s transformation over the book. From her finally making decent friends with the women of Cranfield (whom I am pretty sure are ear-marked for later stories), to transforming the disused station to a successful coffee shop, restaurant and pizza place – aptly named ‘Platform 1’ – this book was overflowing with feel-good vibes. I could vividly picture the tidying that Katy helps with, as well as what Platform 1 finally looks like as it eventually grows to become a community centre.

Not only that, but the love interest, Ryan, is not just a perfect character. He has his own foibles and I really appreciated seeing that more vulnerable side to him. Ryan has been impacted by his work and family life: Katy becomes the tonic that helps him heal. I was desperate to see the two characters come together and Sherlock keeps readers waiting long enough as the station transforms. Therefore, it was highly satisfying when the romance kicked in!

If you are after a gentle read that shows characters changing for the better, a warm community and a sprinkle of romance, then this book is for you. Starting with the cooling temperatures of autumn and taking readers through to the start of spring, this was a lovely October read. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series and return back to Cranfield.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love this author's books and remember the first book in the Railway Lane series well so was keen to head back off to the little village of Cranfield. I really liked Katy Smith's character and whilst she did have some issues which she needed to deal with, she did seem a lovely, likeable character who made me laugh throughout! We meet Katy when she's just been made redundant and has split up from her boyfriend. In a drunken moment, she applies for a job in Cranfield and being the professional that she is decides to stick it out when she is offered the job (the decision is also made easier when her new boss, Ryan Connelly turns out to be rather gorgeous)!

The book flows along so well. It was lovely to return to Cranfield and we get to meet some of the characters we've already met in the first book of the series. I loved the idea of the old Station, even in the previous book, and I had already been imagining what it would be like if it was brought back to life! Of course, I sort of guessed where the storyline was going, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment of it at all, and I loved watching and wondering if Katy and Ryan would ever get it together!

The book was full of fun and laughs, and I couldn't help but chuckle at Katy in her designer high heeled boots! There was some past history which both Katy and Ryan needed to get straight in their lives and this left a vulnerable side to both of them. The storyline was truly delightful though with plenty of romance and friendships, and I was hooked almost instantly! This is a perfect piece of escapism and ideal for a summer read! I can't wait to return to Cranfield! Would definitely recommend!

I don’t think I am the target audience for this type of book - and that’s fine for both me and the author so perhaps my 3* rating may seem a touch unfair.

Book is what I call a nice “holiday” read, in that there not really much to the plot, characters aren’t entirely fleshed out and it doesn’t take much to follow.

It’s enjoyable and has given me a couple hours to read - which I love. It’s just sadly not the book for me.

However if small town, cosy, uplifting, books are your thing, I would recommend for you :)

I’ve noticed there’s more in the “series” also which features other characters mentioned in this book and if focuses on their story instead so could be a nice little bunch of books if this is your thing.

Some good moments, just sadly not my style. But enjoyed the time to read and surely that’s the main thing.

Book two in The Railway Lane series and it was lovely to revisit Cranfield. Bob’s wife has left him and he’s spending all his time and energy into restoring an old steam engine, his sons Ryan and Ethan are concerned about him and the future of the station. Katy has been made redundant from her job at an upmarket London hotel and she applies for the job to organise and clear the station not knowing what she’s letting herself in for. Great characters, community and friendships with a beautiful romance simmering throughout.

Thanks to Boldwood for the advanced copy of this title in return for an honest review.

Ooh I've never made it a secret how much I adore Alison's books and I'm always excited when I see a new one is out. I didn't know this was in the same series as Heading Home to Lavender Cottage, which I really enjoyed.

I may have preferred Heading Home to Lavender Cottage a smidgen more because I fell in love with the characters and I have more interest in the lavender fields than the trains in this book, but this is an extension of the first book and is still wonderful. Alison has this knack of creating recognisable and familiar characters and scenarios that just have that little added extra, that little spark of magic bout them.

No matter the subject matter, I always have a smile on my face when I read a new Alison Sherlock book. She has a way of creating a romance story that you feel jealous of but admire. Like a true fairy-tale romance but with heavy doses of reality peppered through.

I've discovered I've only read 4 of her books which I can't really believe. It feels as if I've been reading her forever. But on the good side, it means I have many more to catch up on and enjoy.

I wasn't a big fan of Ryan to begin with, but he was thrown into the deep end so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. And then he quickly became the dashing hero every good book needs. Katy was an interesting main character. She's clearly built some walls up around herself and feels the best way to get through life is to just get through it, without getting attached to anything or anyone. So it was interesting to read whether she would have those walls tested by her new surroundings. Ryan's brother Ethan didn't do much for the storyline for me, he was more of a background character, but their dad Bob was excellent. The sadness and fear, obsession and desperation - it could have strayed into the pantomime but he was excellently created and developed.

There is always a sense of family in her books and it's no different in this one. Family isn't always blood relatives, and blood relatives aren't always family. We make family out of what we can. Out of friends and colleagues and sometimes eve strangers.

I am very much a country girl. I live in a town just outside of London which is getting busier and busier, and I don't like busy cities. I want the little cottage out in the countryside. And that's what this book offers. And it was interesting to see the countryside through Katy's eyes, someone who prefers the busyness of London.

What I really enjoyed about this was the collective desire to revamp the train station and get it going again. I know it's on a large scale, but we get so used to throwing things away, that it was lovely to see a group of people determined to give something new life rather than simply walking away from it.

Like any book series, you would get more out of it if you've read the first book, as you'd get to know the characters and the setting. But this is perfectly readable as a standalone novel.

It's a small point but I loved the chapters set at Christmas time. If you've read my previous reviews you'll know that I am a Christmas obsessive and there's something about reading cosy festive scenes in a cosy rom-com during the heat of May that just gets me all warmed up.

It is such an uplifting, heart-warming, cosy, beautiful, bubbly, gorgeous, happy, funny, human story and I loved it. She's definitely got another hit on her hands and I'm hoping there will be more to come in this series.

One Liner: Sweet and enjoyable

Workaholic Katy Smith is made redundant at the 5-star hotel she managed and achieved great heights. With the industry in a slump, Katy doesn’t find good job opportunities despite her glowing career graph. Drunk and sad, she applies for a job at random to find out that it’s neither a hotel nor an active railway station. But a job is a job, isn’t it?

Ryan enjoyed success as a chef in Rome before his career ended in a wreck. Back home, he has to deal with the mess of his parents’ broken marriage and his confidence issues. Katy’s arrival seems to have sorted the place but what about his career and future?

Can the two find a new beginning in the sleepy small town?

The story comes in the limited third-person POV of Katy and Ryan.

My Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed book one in the series and hoped this would deliver on the same level. Fortunately, it almost succeeds. While I did like the first book better, this one is charming in its own way.

Katy and Ryan are well-defined characters with their own burdens and issues. Bob’s character arc is well done, and I like the change we see by the end (even if it feels a little abrupt, as we don’t get his POV).

The side characters are often present and add to the small-town atmosphere. Harriet is more confident and happy in this one. Flora and Libby stay true to their characters. The adorable golden retriever, Paddington, also appears more than once.

My issue is with the info dump in the initial chapters. We get Katy’s life story in her first chapter and Ryan’s in his. Reading their backstories in the first and second chapters of the book feels like an overload. While some information is necessary, the rest isn’t. Furthermore, some details are repeated a few times as the characters converse with others. Removing the repetitions from the beginning would tighten the narration.

The plotline, as such, is predictable. But that’s why I read small-town romances (this is a clean romance with a few kisses), so no complaints. Moreover, it’s nice to see how Katy’s professional expertise brings better opportunities for the village without destroying its natural beauty.

The book deals with themes like family, relationships, home, love, friendship, self-confidence, etc. While most of them were handled well, I did wish for a little more depth in Katy’s relationship with her mother towards the end.

I suspect we’ll have to wait for Ethan’s book to fully sort out the family dynamics and past secrets. While there is a satisfactory resolution here, we also know there are a couple of loose ends.
I like that there are no third-act breakups or misunderstandings. The book sustains the feel-good vibes throughout.

To summarize, New Beginnings on Railway Lane is a cute, sweet, and light-hearted romance with strong supporting characters and a charming setting. This works great as a standalone but will be more enjoyable if you read book one.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

New Beginnings on Railway Lanes was an unexpected gem for me. I stumbled upon the audiobook on Spotify during one of my organizational tidying-up sessions—a habit I often turn to when I want to feel more structured. Initially, I had zero expectations for this book. Railways aren’t a topic I’ve ever been remotely interested in, and I was concerned that I might not enjoy it. However, to my surprise, this book turned out to be a lot of fun and left a lasting impression.

I first started reading it in October but left it midway because I wasn’t really vibing with it. Still, something about it made me give it another chance in November, and this time, I finished it in just two days. The book was lovely and unexpectedly impactful. If you’ve ever considered revisiting a book you left unfinished, this might be your sign to do so—you never know how it might resonate with you later.

One of the things I loved most about this book was how relatable the main character felt. She’s a driven, work-first individual who excels at her job and puts her career above everything else. Relationships, hobbies, and even her own well-being come second to her work. This hit close to home for me as someone who used to be a workaholic. Like her, I once prioritized my career above everything else. I worked hard, poured myself into my job, and let other aspects of my life fall to the wayside.

However, as the story progresses, the protagonist’s priorities shift. When she moves from London to a small countryside village—a place she initially thought she couldn’t adjust to—she slowly grows to love it. The move, and her experiences there, help her confront her fears and traumas. She realizes that she’s changed when she starts attending interviews and rejecting job offers. The work she once saw as the centerpiece of her life no longer holds the same weight. Her happiness and well-being take precedence, and she learns to live for herself rather than for her career.

This realization mirrored my own journey. I also stepped back from work after experiencing burnout, which gave me the opportunity to reassess my life. Like the protagonist, I’ve learned to prioritize my mental and physical health, my relationships with family and friends, and my overall well-being. Work is no longer my primary source of happiness but rather something that complements my life.

Reading New Beginnings on Railway Lanes was like holding up a mirror to my own journey. It reminded me of the changes I’ve made and validated the progress I’ve worked hard to achieve. The audiobook version was a joy to listen to, and I hope to own a physical copy someday to keep as a reminder.

While the book is ultimately a love story, it’s also a story of growth, self-discovery, and finding balance. It was a good read, and I’d rate it 3.5 stars.

Thank you for reading my review!

Cranfield is a very small village in England. Nothing much happens there. The most recent excitement was when lavender became an agricultural phenomenon for the area.

Katy has lost her job at a large hospitality corporation. Her live-in boyfriend has just moved out. Katy needs a new place to be in life. Drinking too much and applying to an online ad for a job is probably not the best choice. The description just says they need someone to clean up a mess. That is right up Katy’s alley.

When she arrives at her destination, she finds it is not a hospitality site. It is an abandoned railroad station. And the station is filled to the brim with stuff. Boxes, pieces of machinery, out of date tickets and even more stuff.

Katy believes she can make a change here. Little does she know.

The station is a family site. There are three generations of men here who need help. A great deal of help. Not just for the visible mess, but for the disappointments in their lives.

Eddie is a grandfather. He has worked for the railroad and now he is helping his son, Bob, restore a full sized steam locomotive. That locomotive has taken over Bob’s life to the exclusion of everything else, including his marriage. Ryan is Bob’s eldest son. He was a superstar chef in Rome when he lost his job and his reputation because a customer lied. He has come home, to help his father cope. And also to lick his wounds.

This family needs sorting.

Katy has been a very rigid woman. Her life has become nothing more than her work and without a job, she feels at a loss. She has no actual relationships. Friends are just people who will let you down.

The story is a simple one. Life’s problems are solved. People find their paths in life. Most of all, people find what is truly important in life.

The characters are each complete people. Their situations are what people face in life. Money, loneliness, and fears of failure are what these people see. These things are what they must overcome. And solutions are not necessarily quick or easy.

This book is part of a series, but it works as a stand alone read. The past is explained and it is easy to follow the action and relationships.

This is a sweet story about nice people. I enjoyed the book very much.

Picking up a new Alison Sherlock novel is like being welcomed into the arms of an old friend, and being given a giant hug. It's warm hearted, comforting, feels familiar but also the excitement of not knowing just what will be said, what new story might be told.

I felt right at home in this book, especially as soon as we get to Cranfield. I'm a huge fan already of this series and the interlinked previous series too, and am always keen to see how familiar characters are getting on.

Including Dodgy Del who once again does appear, and causes carnage. I so hope one day he gets his own book as I'm sure it would be hilarious and for such a likeable chap, he deserves a happy ending of his own.

But this book was all about Katy and Ryan, well the whole Connelly family in fact. Katy may have only applied for the job while rather drunk, but as she slowly comes to terms with spending some time in the countryside, it has the potential to be transformative.

And not just for her, the changes in all the Connelly men as the story progresses is rather impressive, and is definitely all down to Katy's magic touch in whatever she turns her hand to. She has fabulous ideas for the old Railway station, and seems determined to help the family make sure it won't be sold.

Katy is rather prickly initially, she's very self sufficient and doesn't really have friends, so her immersion into small village life is rather enjoyable to see, from her attempting to protest it, to finally realising things about her own life.

And Ryan I loved, but it was his father Bob that I was rooting for even more. I really felt for Bob and loved seeing him come back to live as the story progressed and the months went by.

Although part of a series this could easily be read as a standalone novel, but why miss out on the first book in the series which I also really loved.

Just another fabulous story that I couldn't read fast enough, I can't wait for the next book.

Thank you to Boldwood books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Meeting Katy was like taking a step back into a different reading style, to when I enjoyed stories about women who dressed to impress, and the labels meant more than the wearer. Thankfully, it was only a reminder and Katy soon adopted the style of the other Cranfield residents.
Katy’s character was perfect for this story, and I simply loved her metamorphosis as she evolved from paragon of fashion to one of the girls. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with power dressing, but there’s a time and a place, in my world.
We first visited the railway station at Cranfield during the Lavender Cottage book. Still reeling from his wife’s departure, Bob Connolly has thrown all his attention into restoring an old steam engine, but with finances at crisis levels, he may lose everything unless a miracle happens.
His two sons, Ryan and Ethan are determined to figure out a way of saving the station, but Ethan’s idea of advertising for someone to help organise may have been a step too far.
Guarding a secret, Italian chef Ryan can’t bring himself to cook the food that he is renowned for, choosing instead to churn out British staples involving meat and two veg. Ryan soon finds himself abandoned by Ethan and left to work alongside Katy in a bid to clear out the station’s booking office. Initially, they are forced to accommodate Bob’s tendency to hoard, but an accident leads to a change of heart.
The atmosphere evoked by Alison’s writing just draws me into the places that are described. I could easily imagine the waiting room and the railway memorabilia on the walls. If you’ve read any of the previous books, you’ll be thrilled to know that Dodgy Del makes another hilarious appearance, bringing more chaos with him.
As Katy discovers the joy of female friends, Ryan slowly tries his hand at cooking again. The end results are quite magical, and I would love to explore the changes at Railway Lane.
This gorgeous story is the perfect addition to the Cranfield series and certainly sets the tone for another book

Thank you to Rachel at Rachels Random Resources for my invitation to the blog tour and to Boldwood books for my e book in return for a fair and honest review.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series and was delighted to see a return to Cranfield.

This time we met Ryan, son of Bob and him and his brother Ethan have returned home after their mother has left their father for another man.

As the blurb says Ryan was a chef who has lost his way due to an incident that lost him his job. Ethan has placed an advert for someone to come and sort out the place. Katy is also down on her luck in her private life and professionally. She is used to managing hotels but applies for the job one evening when she has had a few too many wines.

Priding herself on her professionalism she heads to Cranfield to what she thinks will be a boutique hotel and she is a little more than surprised when she finds out the job entails.

She takes the job because she is moved by Bob’s plight and she knows she can make a difference. So high heels in hand she returns to Cranfield.

Although her patience is tested on more than one occasion with Bob’s reluctance to part with anything.

I liked Katy she is like a tortoise she has made a shell to protect herself from the hurt and disappointment she has suffered in her life. She is very efficient and experienced in sorting out hotels and although the old railway station is not a hotel, she is unfazed by the task. She is also empathetic of what Bob is going through due to her own upbringing.

As the book progresses things start to fall into place and Ryan and Katy start to look at life a little differently.

It was lovely to return to Cranfield and also meet up with some of the characters from book one. Warm and hopeful this book grabs you like a big hug, Katy discovers that finding friendships and meaning in life may change her for good.

A gorgeous book that will make you feel all cosy as the couple begin to find their feet aided by the lovely inhabitants and each other.

A 5 star read for me *****

After being made redundant at her work as a deputy hotel manager in an upmarket hotel on Park Lane in central London, and then dealing with a breakup, Katy Smith starts job hunting online and soon comes across an ad for a temp job in the countryside— Cranfield—including bed and board.

The apartment in question is owned by Ethan and Ryan Connolly’s family and sits above the railway station in Cranfield.

A month ago, their mom had walked out on their dad, Bob to start a new life in Spain with her lover.
Now the apartment has three occupants—Ryan, his dad, and his younger brother Ethan.

For the past three years, Ryan has been working as a head chef in a fancy restaurant in Rome. Until a few weeks ago, when he was falsely accused of food poisoning by a celebrity customer. The customer later retracted his statement but the harm had already been done because Ryan got fired in the process.

On the same day he got fired, Ryan received a phone call to say that his mother had walked out and he had flown home to comfort his dad.

When Katy arrives at Cranfield, she learns from Ryan that his brother had posted the job ad as a sort-of joke. Nonetheless, she accepts to stay for a week to help clear the station.

After a short visit to the neighboring village Cranbridge, which Katy noticed was buzzing with activity, she decides she could revive the sleepy village of Cranfield.

She had earlier suggested to Bob the possibility of opening a small coffee shop at the train shop and even applied for a permit.

Soon Katy starts making new friends and as feelings between Katy and Ryan develop, Ryan realizes he may have to find a way to talk her into extending her stay.

A feel-good romance novel filled with beautiful characters and beautiful descriptions of the countryside.

Thank you to Alison Sherlock, NetGalley, and Boldwood Books for the arc of this book.

In book 2 of the series, we return to the village of Cranfield, England to learn more about the old train station and the family who own it. As we saw at the end of book 1, Bob the train enthusiasts wife left him, leaving behind an unexpectedly high mortgage and a horde of train memorabilia.

In a last ditch effort, Bob's son Ethan places an advert online to find someone to sort through his father's belongings, then leaves town and hands the responsibility to his brother Ryan, a successful chef in Italy. He never expects for the advert to be successful; but then he meets Katy. A manager for 5 star hotels who was recently made redundant, she's reluctant to consider a job outside of London. However after meeting Bob and realising the extent of the issue, she agrees to stay for a week and do what she can.

Together, Ryan and Katy work to reinvigorate the old railway station and bring life back into their pocket of Cranfield. But as Katy's reasons to stay grow longer, will she and Ryan discover that there is more to life than career progression?

Thank you to Author Alison Sherlock, @bookandtonic & @netgalley for providing this ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 and couldn't wait to continue the series.

This a sweet, clean romance and is far more a focus on what people will do for love (in this case, for ones family). Watching the MCs grow together and build a life that brought them joy was really lovely to see, as was the strengthening of the wider community through their choices.

I loved that the setting for the majority of the book was the old train station itself and the surrounding buildings. It was such a fun way to incorporate the characters from book 1 who only live down the lane and so became frequent faces as they passed through. I would love to see books focusing on Ryan/Libby or Flora next!!

Look out for publication tomorrow on June 16th 🥳

New Beginnings on Railway Lane by Alison Sherlock

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

When high flying, workaholic Katy Smith is suddenly made redundant, she needs to find a job fast!

After mistakenly answering an advert online, she quickly realises that the rundown railway station in sleepy Cranfield isn’t the 5-star London hotels she’s used to working in!

But a job’s a job. Right?

Chef Ryan Connelly is having a crisis of confidence after his Italian dream turns sour.

Returning home to try to pick up the pieces of his parents broken marriage, he soon discovers that his family home, the railway station, is close to financial ruin
Can Katy use all of her skills and find a way to save the railway station?

And can Ryan rediscover his passion of cooking once more?

As winter in Cranfield begins to sprinkle its magic, perhaps Katy and Ryan can find their very own new beginning on Railway Lane.

My Opinion

I have read a few books by Alison Sherlock and now I start to get excited when there is an upcoming release. This is the sequel to Heading Home to Lavender Cottage but it could easily be read as a standalone. Katy has recently been made redundant and is in need of a new start - what better chance than moving away to start a new job. While Katy is out of her comfort zone, can she learn to enjoy living in Cranfield?

This is such a sweet romance and it was lovely to see the development of Katy and Ryan. This is a series that I am enjoying so far and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to get to know some more of the characters that live in Cranfield.

It’s wonderful to be back in Cranfield for New Beginnings on Railway Line, the latest engrossing installment in Alison Sherlock’s charming rural romance series.

Katy Smith’s career means everything to her – so she’s devastated when she loses her job at the 5-star hotel she had dedicated her professional life to. In desperate need of a new position, Katy answers an advert online for a job in the small town of Cranfield and rather than the boutique hotel she was expecting finds herself shocked when it turns out that she will be working in a rundown train station. But a job’s a job and Katy cannot afford to be choosy. However, things start looking up when she crosses paths with chef Ryan Connolly…

Ryan had big dreams of conquering Italy, but his dreams had quickly turned sour and now he’s back home in Cranfield where his plate is overloaded with domestic drama and the financial ruin of the railway station. Luckily for him, Katy is on board and he hopes that she can use her skills to turn things around. However, the more time they spend together, the more he realises that Katy could end up working her magic not just on the railway station, but also on his heart.

Alison Sherlock’s books are an absolute joy to read and New Beginnings on Railway Lane is a gorgeous romantic escape ideal for curling up with with a great big mug of cocoa. Uplifting, enjoyable and delightful, this enchanting tale of second chances, starting over, coming home and falling in love will melt every reader’s heart.

New Beginnings on Railways Lane is another must-read for Alison Sherlock and I cannot wait for my next visit to Cranfield.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am so ecstatic to be back in Cranfield, I have eagerly been waiting for Ryan, Katy and the Railway since the last book. I’m so happy that it was even better than I hoped for. Alison’s writing is wonderful and draws you into the community and characters, her descriptions of Cranfield just make me want to move there.

The story as always is full of great humour, fun, slow burn romance and a wonderful interesting community, I was delighted to see an appearance by Dodgy Del again, he’s so hilarious! Watching Ryan and Katy develop, get over their pasts and come together slowly, not being scared eventually to be vulnerable was so wonderful.

I was so drawn to the old train station so much and I loved that the majority of the book set there. It was great to see the return of characters from Heading Home to Lavender Cottage , especially as they only live down the lane, so it seemed so natural we should seethed, but loved seeing them and their lives. I am definitely hoping the next book is about Ethan and Libby , but I also want Flora too, so many great characters I need to read their stories too.

This is a wonderful story about family, in whatever form that comes in, it’s a beautiful, warm and uplifting read, one I thoroughly recommend along with the first book in the series if you haven’t already read it, because although this can be read as a stand-alone, I always think you get the best experience reading the whole series and why would you want to miss out on so much joy.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Katy is unemployed and has split from her boyfriend. She drunkenly applies for a job in the countryside, helping to organise a former train station. Ryan’s career has spectacularly imploded and now he returns home to find a mess. His brother hires Katy then does a runner. Can Katy and Ryan join forces to create a fresh start?
New Beginnings on Railway Lane is a light hearted and emotionally warm novel set in the English countryside. This is the second book in the series but each works as a stand alone as I have not read the first. I believe that the characters from the first book feature in this one but there are no spoilers about plot.
Katy is a confirmed city dweller with a penchant for high heels. So it is completely out of character for her to move to the country! Ryan kept secret about his mum’s affair but now she has abandoned his dad anyway and the guilt is eating away at him. Meanwhile he has lost his job so returns home and needs to adjust.
The book is written in the third person so that we can see both perspectives. This softens the impact of the big emotions that Katy and Ryan are feeling as they reflect on the past as well as adapt to their current circumstances. There is a warmth to the writing style that brings the characters and setting to life. The plot progresses steadily and builds a hopeful feeling as the future becomes positive.
New Beginnings on Railway Lane is a warm and uplifting book, perfect for a summer read.

I found this book about starting over so charming! I am a big fan of small town romances and the town couldn't get much smaller than Cranfield.

Katy is in between things in her life - a job, a boyfriend, an apartment. Ever since her father left their family, Katy maintains strict control of her life - her emotions, her surroundings. However, one night of too much wine leads her to apply for what she thinks is a job at a hotel, but is really to organize the railway station in Cranfield.

Ryan is in between things in his life - a job and a home. Ever since his mother left their family, Ryan's father let the railway station (where he lives) get cluttered and is determined to fix an old steam engine. Concerned about his father, Ryan is surprised that his brother advertised for someone to help clean up the railway station.

Katy wasn't planning on staying once she realized 1) this was not a hotel and 2) it was in the country, but she feels touched by Ryan's father's grief and finds herself agreeing to help for one week.

After a bumpy start, Katy and Ryan come up with the idea to open a coffee shp in the station's former waiting room. Now all Ryan has to do is convince Katy to stay...for good.

Such a cute and sweet read! I adored the characters and sense of community. Highly recommended!

An amazing story . Jane is a hard working woman who only works and have no free time for herself nor friends . When from the hotel she works she gets redundant she is looking for a new job . After a drunken night she come across a weird advert and she apply for it . When she arrives at the railway station in Cranfield and there is nowhere a hotel her first thought is to go back to London . When she meets the stations owners Ryan , his father Bob and his grandpa Eddie something inside her told her to stay and help them tide the abandoned station . Ryan is a chef who worked in Rome before his parents split and he came back home to be with his father . Together they work and make the old railway station a cafe place and a pizza place so the people of Cranfield will have a place to gather and spent time together . When everything is ready will Jane want to stay with her new family in Cranfield or will she go back to London and the hotels she used to work ?
I loved that we see all the girls from the Heading Home to Lavender Cottage and I am hoping the next book of the series is about Ethan and Libby .
I received this book from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own .

New Beginnings on Railway Lane is Book 2 in the Railway Lane series by Alison Sherlock. While this book is a standalone, you might like to read book one (Heading Home to Lavender Cottage) add it gives you the back story is some of the other characters.

We are back in Cranfield and getting to know about Ryan who came home from Italy to support his dad Bob, when his mother left unexpectedly. They live in the old railway station where his dad has been trying to renovate an old stream train for years while at the same time collecting lots of unnecessary equipment from the station creating mess everywhere.

Katie, living in London, has been made redundant from her high profile hotel role, replies to an advertisement for someone who loves to organise. Not knowing where Cranfield is, she goes for an interview where she is given the post. She discovers things aren't what they seem but decides to do what she can to help.... She is a strong woman who is used to spending all her time working - she doesn't have any friends and her mum lives in Ireland. She doesn't really know what to do with herself in the close-knit community of Cranfield. Ryan is keeping a secret too. Can the two of them work together to make life better.

Fabulous read, hope there's more to come!

Katy has been a workaholic since her youth, driven by her family's financial crisis. However, due to the lingering effects of the pandemic, the hotel industry has failed to recover, resulting in Katy being laid off. Despite her exceptional skills, there are no job openings available. Uncharacteristically, Katy decides to indulge in a bottle of wine, knowing she doesn't have to wake up early the next day.

Upon awakening with a hangover, she discovers a message revealing that she applied for a job in a place she's never heard of: Cranfield, a quaint English village. Katy considers herself a city girl and prefers London over the countryside, with its insects and all.

To her surprise, Katy has been hired as an organizer and is provided with accommodation and meals. Arriving in Cranfield, she is confronted with her task—an old train station filled with a mixture of treasures and junk. Ryan, whose brother hired Katy and then abruptly left town, doesn't seem pleased by her presence. Ryan's father, on the other hand, appears content until Katy tries to dispose of something. Although Katy enjoys a challenge, this, coupled with the fact that she shares living quarters with the family, seems overwhelming. However, she agrees to stay for a week.

As Katy gets to know more members of the family and the villagers, she begins to enjoy her surroundings. Ryan's explanations of his family's history captivate her, and she becomes determined to give her best effort. It doesn't hurt that Ryan himself is incredibly attractive...

As the story progresses, readers will fall in love with Katy and her compassionate nature, just like the rest of Cranfield! The cast of character will make you smile and root for them.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I was able to find the audio version through my local library.
The novel itself is very lighthearted and an easy read. I do think it could have been cut way down by a few hours via audio. I just think it was too long. The characters were mostly cute. The only person I didn't like was the main female character. She was very annoying and the author repeated all the time with that character how much she didn't need anyone to help take care of her and refused help for anyone because they just let you down. Which I understand why she would be upset with how her father's actions did to the entire family. But just because of what happened she decided then and many many years later how she couldn't be close to anyone and depend on them? I don't know it was just all very annoying. The most annoying part was when the main character was sick with the flu and how obnoxious she was towards her love interest. I think he is honestly better off without her.
But the other people in the little town are great. I loved all the characters and I love how they are all very close to each other and how they help each other out. If you can ignore the annoying main female character then you will enjoy everyone else.

BLURB:
When high flying, workaholic Katy Smith is suddenly made redundant, she needs to find a job fast!

After mistakenly answering an advert online, she quickly realises that the rundown railway station in sleepy Cranfield isn’t the 5-star London hotels she’s used to working in!

But a job’s a job. Right?

Chef Ryan Connelly is having a crisis of confidence after his Italian dream turns sour.

Returning home to try to pick up the pieces of his parents broken marriage, he soon discovers that his family home, the railway station, is close to financial ruin Can Katy use all of her skills and find a way to save the railway station?

And can Ryan rediscover his passion of cooking once more?

As winter in Cranfield begins to sprinkle its magic, perhaps Katy and Ryan can find their very own new beginning on Railway Lane.

MY REVIEW:
This was a cute, light-hearted read set in the English countryside.

The characters are likeable and there are no pesky misunderstandings to get in the way. Just a simple, straightforward plot sprinkled with romance.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in return for my honest review.

New Beginnings on Railway Lane opens on Katy, closed-off career woman, being made redundant and applying for a ridiculous job offer for "the most organised person in the world" (whilst drunk, of course). The job at hand is helping a family to bring their closed train station back to its former glory. Will Katy regret accepting this job offer, or will her life change for the better?

Those of you who know me will know that I'm a sucker for a community coming together to save a business. Those people will also know that I love a business woman who opens her heart and discovers a new life for herself. All of this is to say that this book targeted what I like in a book exactly, and pulled it off. I adored this book.

As well as the tropes, I also adored the characters. Katy and Ryan's relationship was so adorable, and the way it progressed made me really happy. Eddie and Bob were the classic wholesome old men you get in romance novels, and made me smile throughout. And Katy's gaggle of girlfriends made in her new life were perfection, and exactly what I would wish for myself. Also, I can't possibly mention the characters I love whilst excluding Paddington. I'm a sucker for a doggo, especially such an adorable one as him<3

So, overall, this book was perfection for me. It wasn't an intense read, and if you're a fan of deeper books then this probably wouldn't be for you, but if you're looking for something light and wholesome then look no further because this was lovely.

Splitting with her partner and losing her job, too,
Workaholic Katy isn't sure what to do.
A bottle of wine, a drunken, online application,
Gets her a new job at a rundown railway station!

The family living there are in dire straits
With a wife who has left and hoarding that can't wait.
Maybe this job is a twist of fate
And Katy can get things into a better state?

She's by nature a fixer and quickly starts
Sorting the debris and clutter apart.
But what is one man's dross is another's gold
But can she help prevent the station needing to be sold?

A heartwarming read with folks who need to heal
A home that needs reviving and new skills to reveal.
A place that is welcoming with lots to do
And new friends who prove to be supporting and true.

A lovely story full of new opportunities and chances
There's even the possibility of some romances!
Can this prove to be the fresh start so many need?
To find out for yourself this book you should read!

For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.
