The second in the explosive, action-packed World War II series featuring hero Eddie Dawson
It's May 1940 and Lance-Corporal Eddie Dawson and Major Sykes are sent to Eben Emael in Belgium, the strongest fort in the world, completely impregnable. They unexpectedly witness a group of German soldiers land on the roof in gliders—the beginning of a full-scale assault. The main attack lasts 20 minutes but leaves Eben Emael crippled. Dawson is disturbed—he has seen the Germans blast holes through solid 12-inch steel armor plating using some kind of new demolition charge. Sykes realizes that this new German secret weapon could have enormous implications for the Allies. In a daring mission, the two men attempt the impossible: to gain entry to the fort and retrieve the armory. What follows is a desperate battle against the odds that holds the fate of many more lives than just their own in the balance. Dawson must embark upon an epic attempt to reach Dunkirk, for he is not merely stealing a weapon; he might attain the firepower of an entire war.
Like the first book, this is a action packed WWII combat story. Nothing more and nothing less. Well-researched but completely focused on Eddie Dawson trying to fight his way out of a pickle or two, or three or four, with no room for character development or a broader picture. A little disappointing really. It is an entertaining read but I read the first and second book in succession and that I can only say that the second book is more of the same, but in a different country. I don't think I will bother with the third book.
A good read, full of action. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I did not know at the start of to book that it was based upon a true story. The tale is an epic journey through Belgium and France. A story of bravery under extreme conditions. I can't imagine a life under such conditions of the invasion of other countries by German troops, who are intent of crushing everything that is in the way.
An excellent read believable and thrilling the main character is quite astounding it is a terrible shame that more books with this character. Are not available I have now read all three books and I like the. The way that they are written a really good story historical accurate what more could you ask for EXCELLENT
Great world war story .When is book three coming can't wait for it. I grew up during ww2 I like reading stories of the those who made great and final discussions Death for our country.
I know it's a novel. But the hero, Dawson, seemed like a Superman. Also, he was very luck, but that's what a book is about. Can't wait for the next one with Dawson, hopefully.
Another excellent tale of Eddie Dawson and a running series of one predicament after the other.Detailed in a lot of areas to demonstrate the author 's research, it made totally enjoyable reading.
This book was very well written by this author. I felt like I was involved in this story of action. Will recommend this book to triends and family. Alvis
There are so few authors writing decent fiction set in WW2 right now, but Max Adams is one who does it so well. This second book in the Dawson series has again the same pace action and verve that the first book had and kept me going from start to finish, to be honest at times the book could sit in action adventure as much as Historical Fiction, the only difference is you don't have to suspend as much belief (as say a Cussler).
My biggest concern is how quiet the reception has been for these books...WHY?? SERIOUSLY THEY ARE A GREAT READ! is it because WW2 is still too raw for some? i hope not, it would be missing out on some fantastic fiction and as with all well written well researched Historical Fiction, you cant help but learn a few things.
Well recommended, and i look forward too more.

Product Description (from back of book) Dawson and Major Sykes are sent to Eben Emael in Belgium, the strongest fort in the world, completely impregnable. That night, activity in the village wakes them, and they return to the fort and witness a group of German soldiers land on the roof in gliders to assault it. The main attack lasts 20 minutes, leaving Eben Emael crippled. And Dawson is disturbed - he has seen the Germans do what he thought impossible - blasting holes through solid 12 inch steel armour plating using some kind of new demolition charge.
Sykes realizes that new German secret weapon could have enormous implications for the allies, affecting everything from the design of tanks, armoured buildings, even battleships. The two men manage to get back inside the fort and retrieve one. On their escape, Sykes is wounded in the leg, but Dawson devises a plan and manages to get Sykes out on a stretcher, with the demolition charge slung underneath it.
But when they eventually manage to battle their way to the Belgian lines, Eddie Dawson will face an epic attempt to make it to Dunkirk, while the German fighters and bombers do their best to kill them all. Comment Comment | Permalink
Overall, a good read. This is 3 or so days in the ficitonal life of two British WWII heroes. It is set in May 1940 and starts off in Belgium. Period detail is very much there. As I commented in my updates, there is too much of the author demonstrating his fantastic research in a clumsy way, but this got a lot, lot better as the book progressed. I know I was reading book 2, and I would read book 1 and others in the series. A 3.5 stars book really.
