Many Thanks to Book Sirens and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

Becky Banks, if these are the kind of stories that you have been writing, then I am gonna buy every one of your work and keep it on my shelf.

I am at a loss of words to describe this delightful romance based in Scotland. As it is, anything to do with Scotland and I’m a goner. There’s something so magical about the place that always fascinates me.

The Legend of Lady MacLaoch is as the title suggests about a centuries old curse that holds sway over the MacLaoch family and according to this fairy tale or curse as one sees it, the clan chief is forever doomed to a life of gloom. When Nicole Ransome Baker born and brought up in South Carolina finds out that her ancestral roots trace back to Scotland, she makes a trip to Glentree to further her research. This sets into motion events that have been centuries in the making.

The current chieftain of MacLaoch, Rowan has endured baptism by fire and lived to tell the tale and his interactions with Cole were extremely convincing. The romance that develops between them was slow and paced luxuriously. As a reader, there’s probably nothing new in the story, a hero, a heroine, a curse, and a trio of villains’ intent on their personal gains but the author has successfully made the book utterly compelling that I just couldn’t put it down. It is so refreshing to read about a heroine who is spectacular in her ninja mode and has no qualms in using everything in her arsenal to fight ugly. I simply loved Nicole and Rowan’s characterization.

A fabulously well-written story of love with a touch of paranormal elements, The Legend of Lady MacLoach is perfect for the fans of historical romance fiction.

My Review

This one wasn’t really my thing on paper it had everything I usually like it just didn’t work for me at all.
The concept itself was interesting and it wasn’t badly written I just felt detached throughout and Couldn’t connect.

The main character American Nicole Baker who goes by Cole finds herself researching deeper into her family linage after her grandfather's death.
This journey brings her to Scotland and the Maclaoch family seat where she discovers the ancient legends and family curse that connects the current Chieftan Rowan Maclaoch with Cole’s past ancestor.

So I had a few issues here first off I found Cole herself to be very aggressive and overly hostile.
I didn’t like her one little bit and thought she was way over the top very rude and so passive-aggressive in her attitude towards others.
Then there was Rowan himself he also had some personality problems and I wasn’t much a fan of him either though I did prefer Rowan to Cole which isn’t really saying much as I couldn’t stand her so hardly a glowing endorsement that.

Then there was the constant unnecessary back and forth with such unneeded angst that a bit of information sharing would definitely have cleared up.

This was also lacking in chemistry and I never felt any connection between either Rowan or Cole I just wasn’t feeling any love from either.
Their whole relationship felt cold and flat and not at all genuine.

Combine this with the secondary characters who I found one-dimensional caricatures of the villain’s with no logical reasons for there strange psychotic behaviours and I was out.
It all just felt so far fetched and totally confusing.

I did like that this was set in Scotland but that was about it really.
I was bored and found my self skimming heavily initially this also moved at a snail pace the last part of this was much faster but it was all just so fantastical.

I do like paranormal stuff so this wasn’t the reason I found this far fetched I just don’t think this was executed or constructed very well.
I’m disappointed as the blurb here showed so much promise the reality of this unfortunately for me fell quite flat.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Legend of lady Maclaich.

Overall: 4.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥
Humor: A bit
Perspective: Mostly first person from the heroine, though there are a few short chapters in third person from the hero

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from Modern Manuscripts and Contemporary Kisses )

Should I read in order?
This is the first book in Banks’s Clan MacLaoch Curse series.

Basic plot:
After graduating college, Nicole decides to research her family’s history while waiting for a job offer. Her only possible lead is the Minory line from the Isle of Skye. Only when she arrives, she finds her family has been a part of a centuries long curse with the MacLaoch clan.

Give this a try if you want:
- contemporary romance with some very light paranormal elements
- fated mates
- American heroine/Scottish hero pairing
- hero is a clan chieftain/heroine is a biologist graduate
- lower steam – 1 full scene that was on the poetic/flowery side instead of explicit
- long standing family curse

Ages:
- Hero is close to 38, heroine is 28

My thoughts:
I think this book was exactly what I needed for my mood right now! I don’t usually read contemporary, but I thought if anything would get me to like it, it would be a Scottish male lead with some history of a family curse tied in. And I think it was perfection for me.

I enjoyed the slow burn tension building of Rowan and Nicole. I liked their banter together, their push and pull. And behind it all the driving force of a centuries long love story. The paranormal aspect was just enough to give you a bit of chills and wonderment, but not enough to make it overwhelming or take away from their story.

In an ideal world, I would have had a bit less villain activity (I just get annoyed with villains, mostly, but that’s just me!), more time from Rowan’s perspective, and a touch more steam or more explicitness/development for the intimate scenes, but overall these are minor complaints. I loved this story. I didn’t want to put it down. I couldn’t wait for them to come together and I was getting tingles from their wanting each other. I thought there was a lot of really sweet scenes between them, especially the hand fasting.

This book ends with a happy for now, but there is more to come in book 2 (not sure yet what direction it’s going in – how much is Rowan and Nicole, how much is the legend from the past)

I was sent this novel to review by the author and boy am I thrilled I'm part of this tour. I started out this novel thinking it would be a good, light read and yes it was, but I never imagined how good it would be. The first few chapters were great to open up but I really got gripped when Cole landed in Scotland.

I love all things Scottish. The scenery is breath taking, the culture is fun and interesting and their accents are to die for. Whenever I read a book based in Scotland, I know I'm in for a treat. Oh, and I can't forget the castles. Their every girls dream, am I right? I couldn't imagine cleaning them, but that's besides the point.

I really believed Cole handed the prospect of the thousand year old curse well. Being in a society where most, if not all people have grown up to believe curses aren't real, it would be hard to land in a situation as Cole did and handle it any other way than she did. I would have probably walked away from day one. Well, not really, considering I crave for an adventure such as Cole's. But that's a different story for a different time... *grins*

The characters were written well and very easy to believe. I could really feel each grin and squint from Rowan. *sighs* He's a Scottish historical woman's dream and he's even better because he's from the present day! I just keep thinking back to the traditional attire/kilt scenes. *winks*

The secondary characters were excellent as well. The brothers Bernie and Angus were a hoot. I loved their stories. The "villains" in the story were also written extremely well. I believed their hate when it was shown. I didn't like them, but that's the point.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is that there's a chance this will be a stand alone novel and we won't ever hear from the clan again. *pouts* Please write more Scottish dreams Becky Banks! Pretty pwease?!

As an American raised in the twentieth century we do not have the same veneration other cultures hold for curses and old tales. So if we were slapped in the face with one forcing us to believe we might handle it the same way Cole (Nicole) does; throw caution to the wind and follow the heart because the mind has no clue what to do.

Cole embarks on a seemingly normal trip to discover more about her ancestors. Little does she expect to get wrapped up in an ancient curse and in the arms of a handsome highlander. The electricity that is generated between Cole and the highlander Rowan can almost be felt through your fingertips. There is no denying that the two have a shared destiny if they can survive long enough to see it.

This tale is wonderfully written. Banks brings to life a curse and a land that are shrouded in mystery. Her characters feel very real; you can imagine this actually happening (if you believe in ghosts and curses that is). If you love historical romance with some mystery of otherworldliness do not miss this book.

I love books about Scotland! I enjoyed the basic storyline in this book. It has legends with lost love and curses. It has castles with a handsome chieftain. This could have been a favorite of mine except for a few things. There is very rough unnecessary language that pops out and surprises you because it is so out of place. The heroine in the book has some very immature moments that makes me think she is not so worthy of the chieftain. It makes you feel sorry for him that he is going to end up with her. Otherwise the imagery and plot of the book were well written. The back story and personality of the chieftain and how they tie into the curse do make up for the herione's lack.

Updated: Read the final edition of the now published novel. Loved the changes and tweaking (even if we don't notice Rowan's butt) Loved it, great combo of romance, myth, and thrills. The ,yth is beleivable for people who love paranormal and realistic for those that can't stand the paranormal as it is a science based explanation, mostly... The plot is such that I want to be in Scottland as the lead heroine...

Currently unpublished asI add this but loved the chemistry with the main characters, I wpn't say anything else.

I was given this book by BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.

I will admit first off that I a sucker for a highlander, so whenever I see anything like this book advertised I want to read it. After looking at the previous reviews on Goodreads I was excited to receive my copy.

A legendary love, an unforgiving curse, and the discovery of a lifetime ...

I love the cover, it does kind of suit the mood of the book you think you are going to read, however going in I was surprised to find the book wasn't as heavily paranormal as I expected but infact the author managed to keep it light and fill the book also with lots of humour and romance. I found myself captivated by the story and dragged in.

Both main characters are very likeable from the outset which I think makes me personally more invested in the book.

I didn't give it 5 stars as towards the end I found the book little bit too repetitive, but I really enjoyed reading the book.

Title: The Legend of Lady Maclaoch
Author: Becky Banks
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: paranormal
Spice: a little bit🥵
Series: Clan of Maclaoch Curse, book 1

Thoughts - I really enjoyed having the central storyline be about a fable. It kept the the focus on track as to what and why all the characters were doing what they were doing. Also Rowan #swoon what’s not to love 😉. The twist and turns kept me wondering what was going to happen, especially Eryka! The spice was minimal but the tension was there. There’s a whole lot of mystery, tension, banter and mayhem in this book so definitely worth the read.

Plot - Cole is following her family genealogy back to Scotland where she discovers her ancestors may be part of a local curse. In her investigations she meets the local clan chief Rowan who is recently returned from war as a fighter pilot. Trying there best to research the curse Cole and Rowan spend more and more time together however people in the village are starting to talk, and some people are not happy of there new found focus.

* Mythology/fable
* Scottish romance
* Strong MFC
* Tension 🥵
* Banter

“she said that you will be amazed because it’ll move like water against my skin and puddle around my ankles when it comes off… slowly, a grin broke out on his face”

*I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

A legendary love, an unforgiving curse, and the discovery of a lifetime.

Centuries ago, a vengeful curse buried itself deep into the history of the MacLaoch clan and become a legendary tale told by all those not cursed by its words.

In present-day Scotland, the laird and chieftain of the MacLaoch clan is an ex-Royal Air Force fighter pilot who has been past the gates of hell and returned a changed man. Rowan MacLaoch does battle with wartime memories and a family curse that threaten to consume him -- unaware that his life and that of the history of the clan will be changed forever by the arrival of an American woman.

Cole Baker, a feisty recent graduate of a master’s program, stumbles upon the ancient curse while researching her bloodlines. Moved by the history of the MacLaoch clan and the mystery of its chief, she digs into the legend that had been anything but quiet for centuries.

On their quest for answers, Cole and Rowan travel to places they have never before been and become witnesses to things they have never before fathomed. The legend -- one started with blood -- will end with more shed as its creator finally exacts her justice.

What Stephanie Thinks: Cole Baker has always been proud to be Cole Baker -- all-American, no-nonsense, overly frisky Cole Baker. It isn't until one Christmas evening when her grandfather breaks news that her name isn't Cole Baker at all. She's actually Cole Minary, and is introduced a Scottish surname she's never even encountered in her life. Curiosity and a hard head have Cole setting out on a quest to find about her bloodlines, but she discovers more than what she could have ever hoped for, instead.

Fictional Scottish history and dark, brooding mystery ignite the pages of The Legend of Lady MacLaoch. An ancient curse brings Cole to Scotland and into the arms of Rowan MacLaoch, chieftain of the MacLaoch clan. He is the modern version of the sexy Scottish hero (kilts and all!!!!) and though I've never read a Scottish historical before, I'm pretty sure I could get used to them. Their chemistry is undeniable, and is a gorgeous demonstration that love can often both be happenstance and eternal, if not redeeming. Rowan is a romance hero I've gone ahead and fallen in love with (who saw that one coming?), and Cole is a independent, admirable heroine. She however, does come off as extremely rude at times. I know it's supposed to be portrayed as "feisty", but if I was acquainted with her in real life, I feel I'd constantly tingle with the urge to bitchslap her.

The plot is surprising, but not shocking in terms of the conclusion. It's fairly predictable, in fact, it's just that there are minor twists within the story I never see coming.

Banks's writing is suspenseful and provocative. The story is consuming; I was unable to put it down! Her characters are witty -- a fine combination of hilarious and smart -- and in the end, they are definitely the type that linger. I am impressed by Banks's marvelous debut; definitely pick this one up if you're in the mood for heated romance mixed with a striking image of Scottish history, as well as the intrigue of mystery and revelation.

Stephanie Loves: "'Mother, Roger is an ex-boyfriend from high school; one that was very sweet but incredibly unmotivated in life except for the pursuit of ass.'"

Radical Rating: 8 hearts-Would recommend to lots of really good friends.

I want to go to Scotland and fall in love with someone exactly like Rowan!

Okay. Okay. I know, I'm not into cheesy romance novels. AT. ALL. However, this is not your ordinary cheesy novel. Becky Banks has conjured up a story so real and true that it's almost tangible. I can taste the Whisky in my mouth and feel the cool rain as it dances from the sky.
Banks has given us characters that jump right into our imagination. I've seen them, spent the day with them and even went with them exploring down the side of a mountain. After reading this book I can say that I feel as if I've met them.

We have a charming yet powerful tale about the legendary Scottish curse of Lady MacLaoch, written full of charm and humor. Banks will enchant you with every word and leave you breathless .

In this story you will meet various folks. All which whom, I think you will adore. You will go on journey after journey unimaginable - until you are in Scotland for awhile and you will meet the lovely people there that make the days go by.
Our main character, Cole, takes you on these journeys with her and you will feel as if you are there with her. Cole is a stubborn American and will argue and fight for what she believes is true.
Then we meet Rowan, our native Scotsman. He is rugged and handsome. And oh, the accent! Banks writes Rowan's POV in full Scottish dialect. How fantastic reading this. Stunning, really. I think Rowan's character came alive more and more after every sentence I read.
Now, Cole and Rowan together. Wow! It is like magic. The fighting, stubbornness and heat that arises from the two of them is intoxicating. To watch the relationship with them grow scene by scene is absolutely sexy. I am left breathless.

While Cole and Rowan take you on this trip so magical, you will believe it is a real life adventure. On this journey you will discover more about the legendary Curse of Lady MachLaoch and the full history behind it.
Becky Banks has given us so much passion and excitement that I read the book in one sitting.

In my opinion, The Legend of Lady MachLaoch is a must read!

Cole Baker is a spunky American graduate with a passion for her family's past. In studying her ancestry she discovers a link to a Scottish clan with a strange history. Unable to sate her curiosity where myth and legends cross with reality she hops a plane overseas determined to find her family's roots.

Rowan MacLaoch is the modern day laird of the clan linked to the bizarre story that Cole uncovers of ancient star-crossed lovers. Curses should be a thing of fairy tales but Rowan's people have a hard time shaking the superstitions they have lived with for centuries. Cole finds herself drawn to the secretive Scotsman but as a veteran of the RAF, Rowan lives with scars and shadows of his own past even on top of the legends of his clan.

The Legend of Lady MacLaoch was a delightful trip through the past and present castles and highlands of Scotland. From the sights and sounds of lush gardens to the intricate tastes of Scottish whiskeys, author Becky Banks paints masterful scenery that leaps from the page in intricate details. Cole is a heroine to cheer for with equal parts smarts and sass and Rowan walks a delicious line between brooding heartthrob and renaissance man. From start to finish, the book was hard to put down and it seamlessly blends action, mystery, and romance with just a dash of magical realism. Not since Diana Gabaldon's Outlander has a book left me with such a desire to see Scotland for myself, but The Legend of Lady MacLaoch is certainly cheaper than plane tickets and makes for a fabulously enjoyable literary journey!

There's a reason I don't read romance novels. Ugh. All the characters in this novel were flat. The nemeses were over-the-top psychos and the enmity was rather lame in comparison. I didn't think Cole was a strong woman (just because she can beat the hell out of someone doesn't make her strong). She was irritating. I think the worst injustice to the reader, though, was to switch to Rowan's point of view. It made him less interesting. The reader could have discovered his past and what he was feeling along with Cole, thereby creating mystery and tension. There was a lot of fist pounding and head bashing, and not just between the characters in the book. I felt like the author was trying too hard to make characters into what she wanted; I felt like I'd been bashed over the head with over-the-top characterization. A real silly book, if you ask me.

Loved this book! This book had elements that never fail to grab me.

1. An ancient curse
2. Takes place in Scotkand
3. Hunky Clan Cheiftan
4. Strong heroine

Nicole Baker an American travel to Glentree Scotland on the isle of Skye to research a family backound that she never knew about I'll the previous Christmas.
Her research into her family origin brings her into contact with Clan Cheiftan Rowan MacLoach one of the many Clan Cheiftans to be living under a long lived curse.
And Nicole may just be the one peron who can break that curse! I I'll not say any more because I will only wind up providing spoilers .

The charachters were well developed , the story line moves has Romance, mystery and danger!

This is one of those books that I just adore diving into. It's got everything I like: an exotic locale, a kick-butt heroine, a historical element (a delicious and ancient curse), a Scottish hottie, and even a fancy dress party. Sweet! I spent the better part of three hours last night reading it to the end (even though I had piles of work to do *pout*). But I had to find out how it would all turn out, so I skipped dinner and my workout and read right in front of the fireplace. Ahhh...Highly recommend this one if you're a romance lover. Look forward to reading more from this author!

This book had a little bit of everything…romance, mystery, violence, sci-fi, humor. The story took place in Scotland, involving a legendary curse linking the main characters in present day. The author did a great job at making the Scottish dialect enjoyable to read and the story more authentic. Plus I love a good accent ;-) Excellent characterization and a great writing style. I really enjoyed it!

In fact, just a few months later, I am ready to read this again. The characters come alive and by the wonderful descriptions, you feel like you know them and what they look like. Can't wait for the sequel (s). Good job Becky - Proud of you!

cute but…

Slow burn sweet romance. It was alright. Not too too much by way of character building, the paranormal aspects seemed forced and out of place, and it was a bit boring. The villains coming back several times made things a bit anticlimactic. The premise of the story itself was sweet… but falling in love and married in just over a week? Even with the “family histories” they have?

Like I said. Not awful. Not great.

Wow, loved it. Nice combination of history, romance and mystery. There was enough to satisfy a wide range of readers. I love the details like blowing moss off rocks to leave a trail for the hysterical lover or rattling off scientific names by the heroine to show she doesn't mind being known as intelligent. Good job now where's the other books?

Totally enjoyed this paranormal/historical romance set in Scotland ( who doesn't love a laird in kilts with a war wound?)I gobbled it up in two days. A curse, a legend, a fated love thwarted by sleazy sidekicks, oddball scientists and bad Scottish weather... adds up to a rollicking escape read that once again makes Scotland a favorite imaginary destination.

Fun book that a read completely because it was written by the wife of one of family friend. It ended up being a quick, fun, read ( a must in my house of small children - I don't have a lot of free time). The language was worse then I like, and there was a bedroom scene & and not quite to the bedroom scene but if you don't mind those it was a great story.

Great story! One of those books that is hard to put down until you are finished and then you are sad when it is over. Love the strong female main character. This novel has a little bit of everything - romance, intrigue, good vs evil, curses and mystery.

This book had a little bit of everything romance, hate, paranormal, mystery and handsome men. When I started reading this book I found that I could not put it down, I wanted to just keep reading. The plot had some twists that I did not really expect but I truly enjoyed this book.

Definitely a fun read by a great new author! It took me by surprise when I got hooked and couldn't put it down! Becky Banks does a great job making the Scottish dialect easy to read so that you're right there listening to all the delectable things coming out of a hot scotsman's mouth. :)

Great beach or vacation book! Entertaining and engaging, and easy to put down and pick back up right where you left off.
