Highland Secrets #1

When Fate Dictates

Rate this book
‘When Fate Dictates’ is a full length novel of approximately 90 000 words and is book one in the ‘Highland Secret Series'. Book two of the series is called ‘Beyond Time’ and the third is ‘Entwined’ both of which are due for release soon. The Scottish Highlands are well known for their mystical charms and tales of fantasy, yet very few have encountered the power of a Highland Stag, the magic of a Campbell crystal or the enchantment of a sprig of heather. Indeed, even those who dwell within the shadows of these formidable mountains are often unaware of their charms. In the early hours of February 13th 1692 the sulfurous smell of a fired gun hung in the air of these mountains. Men, women and children screamed in terror, withering against pain as they fell, bludgeoned to death by men of the army. The shameful scar of a dreadful and tragic event was etched upon the landscape of a beautiful and otherwise honorable place forever. Awoken by the sickly, metallic copper stink of fresh blood and death, Corran MacDonald is forced to flee into blizzard swept mountains. She mysteriously defies death only to come face to face with one of her enemies, Simon Campbell. With her family massacred and her village destroyed, Corran trusts the man when he offers to help her escape. But things aren’t quite what they seem and very soon their bid for freedom is thwarted by Simon’s old enemy and fellow Red Coat, Angus. A perilous journey of mystery, magic and intrigue takes the couple through time to modern day York where a twist of fate leads them to a conflict that will shape the final destiny of all Highlanders.

Elizabeth Marshall is the pen name of the author of the ‘Highland Secret Series’. She was born on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s Hospital, at the Marianhill Monastery, in the province of Natal, South Africa.

Elizabeth grew up in a small village called Hillcrest surrounded by a large Scottish farming family.

Her primary education was delivered by Nuns from the Monastery in which she was born. The teaching that Elizabeth received during her primary school days provided an invaluable foundation and grounding.

Smiling, Elizabeth recalls a gift, presented to her by Sister Domianis at the end of a school year. It was a prayer card and on it was simply written the word – Patience.

Through secondary school and into adult-hood, Elizabeth’s life centred on a love of reading, music, writing and history.
A hopeless romantic and dreamer with a head full of stories, Elizabeth wanted desperately to write.

Many real adventures later and Elizabeth is now living in the land of her ancestors and telling the stories she was born to tell.

This story took an enjoyable twist I did not expect. The characters were a good bit of fun and easy to cheer for. I do have to warn the reader, this is not a straight up historical fiction, It is more like a historical fantasy. Elements of magical artifacts and time travel are heavy through the book. If you enjoy that genre you will love this book. It is really well written for a first novel and has some moments of impressive imagery. The story flowed fast and the romance was hinted at but not overpowering. The end was satisfying and left the reader happy. All in all I really enjoyed the book and looking forward to Mrs. Marshall's next book.

I've finished this book a while ago, on a transatlantic flight. Normally, I review fast, but with this book I had to take my time to think. Why? For 2 reasons: first, I was disturbed by it, and wanted to settle my emotions down a bit. Second, I wanted to get over the jet lag :)

Here are my reasons for giving the book a solid 5 star rating.

1. It's emotionally raw. I'm not quite sure how Elizabeth does it, but the events in the book scratched my soul from the first chapters. Yes, there's gore and death, and there's an innocent and defenseless maiden, and a rough brute; but it wasn't just that. The quality of writing is such that the emotions came through and touched me.

2. It's dreamy yet specific. It's probably just me, but I like dreamy, thoughtful writing; I love being taken by my hand and shown what the characters see and how they feel. This book delivered just this. It also delivered a well-researched and appropriately detailed historical setting. I gained new insights into the national characters that I had completely missed in my 2 years living in England.

3. It's romantic. I was a little concerned in the beginning that I got myself into reading a "girly" book (nothing wrong with that, of course, but I normally stay away from them), but soon I realized the book had much more to offer than what its cover might suggest. It does have historical romance; but it also has bar brawls, assignation attempts, rebellion, mystery and time travel. All that is presented in a pragmatic, no-nonsense way. I loved it, and began liking the characters even more for all the trouble they had to go through.

As an improvement suggestion, I'd have wanted the second part of the book to slow down a little and to once again take the time to hold my hand, delve on the feelings, emotions and sights. I loved the magic and the mixing of the eras, I simply wanted more details on how the events impacted our characters.

All in all, I highly recommend this book, and will be looking for more by Elizabeth.

When Fate Dictates is a beautifully written story of love, strength, and courage born from tragedy and kept alive through belief and determination.

Elizabeth Marshall captures the innocence of love and sets it free to find its way through twists and turns in the wake of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald clan of Glencoe at the hands of Campbell clan.

Corran, a young, beautiful MacDonald is forced to come to terms with the events that have come to pass in the bloody aftermath and reveals incredible strength and capability that only challenges can bring forth. Corran and Simon, a Campbell of Glenlyon, bridge the gap between their clans, determined to forge ahead towards a new life, with trials at every turn.

The characters are down-to-earth, likable, and what I would consider very realistic with a touch of innocence.

When Fate Dictates carries the reader through innocence lost all the way to true wisdom and knowledge, but not without quite a few surprises along the way!

Bravo to Elizabeth Marshall for a novel well done! Her word painting allowed me a glimpse into a world I might have never known…

“When Fate Dictates” is a beautiful, romantic story beginning in the tumultuous days of 17th century Scotland. A young woman, Corran, and a solider, Simon meets following a massacre, fall in love and marry. As the story moves, the identity of the main characters comes to light, revealing the relationship they have to the man who seeks to harm them. Through ancient artifacts, paranormal events carry the couple through time, showing the infinite boundaries of true love, regardless of time and place. This is a beautiful, must-read for romance fans, and for readers seeking a romantic tale with an interesting historic backdrop. Five stars!

Even the introduction had me smitten!
With such a fantastic (if that's the correct term for a massacre) true life event as this books foundation - I was hooked from the start. That coupled with Ms Marshall's natural story telling ability and the realistic imperfections of the main characters Corran and Simon, this all adds up to one hum dinger of a read.
What brought the book alive for me was Simon's flawed character (he's no saint, a gambler and uses violence to right wrongs) and Corran, who nags him at time, relationship. There is real fear in their lives as on several occaisions their lives are threatened, and the villian, Angus, made me feel desperate on their behalf.
This book has echoees of the work of Diane Gabaldon about it and no fan of historical fantasy will want to miss out on "When Fate Dictates." Ms Marshall is an author to watch.

Excellent word painting, amazing descriptions and truly realistic characters made this a book I won’t forget but the thing that excited me the most about this story is the way the author took real locations and weaved the magic of believable fantasy into them.

I had no previous plans to visit York, however, I must admit to having just booked a week’s break there all thanks to this story.

Nice job, Elizabeth. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Oh and I have seen some mention of ‘Team’s’ around this book. If you are counting, then I am ‘Team Simon’.

This is such a beautiful story, elequently written. Marshall connects with the reader by masterfully making fantasy feel almost real.

The characters and the storyline are so gripping right to the very end.

A 'Must Read' in my opinion, and I will be recommending it to all my book loving friends :)

5 STARS!!!

Elizabeth Marshall did a genius job in creating no ordinary romance novel. Sci-fi meets History- this book covers a range of different genres, successful in each one. I particularly enjoyed the vivid battle scenes- the description and the way it grabs the reader is truly outstanding.

I took a risk on this book and I am so glad I did. It is an original, well written, emotive adventure story with a bit of magic, lots of mystery, romance and an accurate historical backdrop, without the lecture. It felt like a Harry Potter for grownups.

I found the history to be very accurate and the telling of it was much better than a lot of historical novels, where you get a history lesson instead of a story. I know York well, I live there. The descriptions of the city were excellent.
The Scottish Highlands are a place I love to visit. I have some academic knowledge of Scottish history, so I can say with a fair degree of confidence, that the author did her research and got it right. Her descriptive narratives were enticing and right from the first page I was there, with Corran in her village willing her to survive.

As a character, Corran was a tad annoying at the beginning, but as she matured I grew quiet attached to her. Part of her charm was that the author painted her ‘warts and all’. She was a realistic teenager who grew into a realistic woman and towards the end of the book I developed an unexpected respect for her.

Simon was by far my favorite character. His appeal, much like Corran’s was down to the fact that he too was believable. I might not have liked some of the things he did but that gave him character and charisma (if a character can have charisma).

Without ruining the plot for everyone, I will just say that I hope we get to see more of Duncan and I would like to know what happens to Eilidh. Shannon is an interesting character and I think there is a lot of scope for her development.

The plot was intriguing and I genuinely can’t wait to see where it is going in subsequent books. I don’t want to give too much away but as adventure mysteries go this was fantastic.
I got the feeling throughout this story that the author was having an adventure and that I could tag along, if I wished, but that she was going with or without me. It was very imaginative, honest, original and unassuming. I like this author and I like the way she writes. I can’t tell you who will and won’t enjoy it this book. I have read reviews from people who have the same opinion as I do on a lot of other books, yet on this one we differ in our opinion. What I can say is that I had an amazing time reading it and have just picked up the second book in the series.

Thank you to the author for a very good story. I very rarely leave reviews but in this case I felt compelled to.

‘When Fate Dictates’ is a novel which blends genres so seamlessly to create a multi-layered, highly emotive and beautiful story. The protagonist, Corran, sees her village destroyed in a brutal massacre. Corran is left helpless and alone with her family and home obliterated by this bloody betrayal. After being saved from near death in a supernatural fashion by a mystical stag, Corran meets Simon, a deserter of the army that orchestrated the massacre. Corran and Simon fall in love and begin their cat and mouse adventure up and down Britain and eventually through time to modern day York where a final showdown with Angus (the baddie) puts a dramatic end to the epic, fast paced chase.

The characters are very real and I found myself emotionally attached to not only the main characters but some of the characters with only small parts to play in the book. I was relieved that the author didn’t make the book too heavy on the romance as that’s just not my thing, although, being a male and not being partial to the whole ‘Alpha male’ role, there were a few too many references to thigh muscles for my liking! As much as I dislike this kind of thing in books, I do think that Marshall didn’t push the boundaries and used the romance to develop the character relationships and plot instead of just making it tacky, which is something that you don’t often get with this kind of book. This gave me a lot of respect for Marshall, and the elegance in which she approached this subject.

I loved all the plot twists and turns. Just when you think that the story is settling down and that the main characters are finally safe, Marshall throws a new and unexpected challenge to them. The plot is completely unpredictable and enthralling right to the very end. I absolutely recommend this one to EVERYONE as there are so many different elements within this book that there is something in it for all to enjoy.

History sprinkled with magic.

Elizabeth Marshall’s novel took me into the magic of the Highlands. For a few weeks I was lost in the glen, surrounded by breathtaking peaks, following the journey of young Corran as she fled the Red Coats.

A story of a despicable betrayal as the British Crown attempted to subdue the proud Scots. And on the smaller scale, it is a story of love and trust between the two young people who, unintentionally, crossed the path of the evil. And the path of the magic. Both the evil and the magic more powerful and more encompassing than they at first had presumed.

Elizabeth is a very talented writer and storyteller. Her language is beautiful, poetic. As I read I could not help but feeling as being there in the snow, or sneaking the narrow streets of York, afraid of being detected. With no effort as it seems, she hurls the reader centuries back, reconstructing times and places as if those were still here, just a few hours away.

I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good historical. This novel is as informative as any textbook, but unlike a textbook it is full of life and love, inhabited with people who just wanted to live their lives.

Elizabeth Marshall is one amazing writer. She brings us a wonderful adventurous story. This book is not just a love story but a story of trust and faith that knows no bonds

From the time I started this book I just did not want to put it down. I was just drawn into the story and the lifes of the charactors. They seemed so reall and I wanted to learn more about them.

We meet Corran a beautiful young girl who has just seen her family and village massacred by the Kings army. She comes close to death and is saved by a beautiful stag which she doesn't understand why. There is Simon who she meets. He is a desserter from the Kings army and she falls in love with him. Both of them are on the run for their lives.

This is where the story really takes off and you are in for a ride of your life.

Very well written and I would recommend this book for all to read.

I don't normally read this kind of book, but the historical/sci fi plot grabbed me. I hoped to be swept up into a beautiful romance, and I'm not one to get preachy, but the misogyny became unbearable within a few chapters. The main character is constantly in the dark because her lover, Simon, literally refuses to let her participate in any of the action, while she remains incredibly passive. When the plot picked up about halfway through I decided to finish it, and I thought the twists and general storyline had a lot of potential, but the execution didn't quite get it there.

I think it all comes down to the characters. If the leads were just a little more well-developed, if she was a bit more assertive and didn't hang out at the inn taking baths when Simon was off making things happen, it could've been better.

Marshall did, however, give a great look at life in the late 17th century Highlands and England. The descriptions were subtle and she didn't fill the reader with unnecessary facts like many historical writers do, and if anything, I finished the book feeling like I at least learned a little something.

As you can see from the blurb, there is a lot going on in this book. It's not that hard to keep up with, though. When Fate Dictates is a historical fantasy, but unlike many fantasies that I've read, there is not an overabundance of characters to keep up with. Corran and Simon have trouble trusting each other, but soon learn that they have no one else to count on, and of course, end up falling in love. This is much more than a romance, though, because that is just the beginning of their story. We follow Simon and Corran through the next twenty-something years of their lives. The people they meet and experiences they have will all culminate in a showdown in present-day York.

I've read enough stories about Highlanders to know that they can be rather high-handed and arrogant, but Simon really needs to work on his communication skills. Man can not live on pride alone. In fact, when too much pride is involved, man usually doesn't live very long at all if you're living in a time of swordfights and gun battles.

I flipped out when I saw how the book ended, but I've since learned that this is the first book in a series and the author didn't leave us hanging. The second and third books have been added to my (over-burdened, ever-growing) TBR list.

This is another one of those books that is rated so high and all I can do is scratch my head in pure bewilderment.

*Still scratching head five minutes later*

I don't get it. As I have mentioned in past reviews I am not a fan of bashing on a book. Heck, I have so many four and five star ratings that I would say I am rather generous with them. There was just something about this book that did not sit well with me and I cannot quite identify what that was.
I know for sure I had a problem with the pace. There were problems with the character and relationship development- or that fact that there wasn't any to begin with. So many of the things occurring did not make sense to me. It was as if I was reading an outline being told everything that was going to happen in the story and now all that is left to be done is fill in the descriptions to SHOW the reader what is happening.
I am not going to get into it much more than that. I am in the minority in my views so it is obviously me missing something and not the book itself.

Marshall is everything a writer should be in my opinion. She is passionate, eloquent, knowledgeable about her subject and most of all imaginative. I loved the mythical element of the story which blended seemlessly with the historical and futuristic aspects so that it felt like a natural component in whichever setting it happened to appear in. The characters were well rounded. Good background information was given of them and at just the right time.
The story had a natural flow which was down to the fluency of the writer and the love of her subject matter. She knows her characters inside out. When she writes, she becomes them. Their traumas are her traumas. Their desires become her own.
A wonderful novel featuring Scottish history intertwined with the perils that two lovers face at the hands of their enemies. Expect the unexpected because Marshall certainly delivers!

We know something magical is happening early in the book when the story's heroine, Corran, appears to die, but hasn't. The answer is connected to the appearance of a large stag, but we don't find out the animal's significance until later. Fans of Scottish history will enjoy the way Marshall seamlessly blends fact with fiction to carry us along on Corran's journey with the ever-resourceful and somewhat arrogant Simon. He can be overbearing, but he is a man of his time. More magic (I don't want to be more specific) occurs late in this engaging story of love, hardship, loss and triumph.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A historical fantasy romance weaving Scottish Highlands lore with time travel intrigue. Corran’s escape from tragedy leads her to a mysterious journey across time and into modern York, where magic and ancestral conflicts resurface. The book combines rich setting, folklore, and a slow-burning romance, making it a compelling read for fans of historical fantasy with mystical elements.

This book started off strong and I couldn't wait to see how things would work out for the heroine and hero. However the book really started to lose steam and drag on. I felt the heroine just decided to be in love with the hero and never really saw the love develop. There were many scenes that did not seem t have a point in the book and the ended left me feeling cheated. It wrapped up way too quickly and not how I expected.

2.5 stars. Another story where the two people fall in love somewhere during the story without any understanding as to why or how. Also, I often felt that Simon was a real jerk quite often - and not in a good, sexy, alpha Scots highlander way. It made it difficult to sympathize with him most of the time. Towards the end, the story got better and more interesting. That is basically the only thing that saved this book.

Not for me. Too much going on and not enough explanation. Most times, the characters reacted to the supernatural events with not much emotion or thought. The only time there was some explanation, it was still not explained to satisfaction and then suddenly, the characters went from 1666 to 2005 with no led up to time travel. They were talking about this crystal and suddenly, they were in another time and another place. Took me a while to even realize they traveled through time.

So I ended up purchasing this because the second book in the series was free on Amazon and I so love good time-ravel romance. This one starts off very slow but then it goes by really fast. It is hard to keep up with everything that is going on. I would have rated it higher but it got to be hard to follow.

This story was interesting. it was. very slow, and hard to follow. the story itself, has potential, but it kind of fell flat. It took me much longer to read, than most other books, because it was so difficult to get into. In all of the comments that I've read, they say that the second book is much better - we shall see!
