Lots of action in this one…..

Well known Florida author Randy Wayne White started off his published novel career with 7 books written about Dusky MacMorgan, hero-at-large, in the Florida Keys. The books are all tightly written with a decidedly John d. MacDonald feel to all of them. White is a huge fan of MacDonalds and that's loud and clear in this book. Lots of JDM reflection and meanderings. The violence is a more blatant and charged than JDM. There is also little mystery in the book. The drive is action.

I'm more of a fan of these 7 MacMorgan books than White's current long run of Doc Ford. I find the Ford books over long, too politically preachy and too many set in an area of the world I don't care for, Latin & South America. All of that weighing down simple skeletal stories. MacMorgan are also simple stories, but, in my opinion, better constructed.

White's strength in the series and this book in creating very strong, if not often stereotypical, characters. The dialogue is weak, but the narrative is good.

Bottom line: 6 out of 10 points.

This was an interesting book. The 2nd book in a series about an ex Navy SEAL named Dusky. I found this book to be far more enjoyable than the first one in the series and it made me interested in actually tracking down the rest of them. They are an easy read that is for sure and more enjoyable than some of the other so called men's pulp novels that I read.

"The Deep Six", written by Randy Wayne White, is an action packed novel filled with suspense. The setting was inviting because it took place in Key West .The author used vivd imagery to describe the ocean, beaches, islands, and under water life of this beautiful part of Florida. The reader felt absorbed in the atmosphere. This sets the stage for a thrilling mystery. The main character, Dusky MacMorgan, is an adventure seeking former Navy SEAL. He is smart, brave, loyal, and dedicated to seeking the truth at all cost. I liked the main character because he was not afraid to risk his life to avenge his friend's death. His athletic ability, intelligence, and fearlessness lead to exciting action throughout the book.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and give it a four out of five rating. I didn't give it a higher rating because there were some parts of the plot that could have moved faster. I would recommend this book to an older audience because there are some mature themes and violence. Some of the action scenes are graphic and a bit gory. If you are interested in ocean life and diving this would be a great pick for you. This book would also appeal to those who have an interest in adventure and mystery. Those who admire military special forces would love Dusky MacMorgan. If you like this book, Randy Wayne White has written a series that feature this gutsy character.

Easy to read, great plane or beach read, this Randy Wayne White novel was written early by him as Randy Striker and has been reissued. The hero is Captain Dusky MacMorgan, a charter fishing captain in Key West, who also happens to be an ex-Navy SEAL Vietnam veteran. Nasty Cubans, thugs, missing Spanish treasure, women, beer...it's all there. Kind of Rambo meets Jack Reacher or name another contemporary hero..it's rollicking good fun.
