The basilisk, Marius, is Star Manor’s latest client, but he arrives fresh from an offer from the Manor’s greatest enemy. The innocent young woman he is matched with for a companion challenges what he knows of his own nature and poses a problem for his bargain.
Can a cold heart thaw, or will a venomous man remain a poison to those he sinks his fangs into?
This is a scorching hot standalone novella set in the same world as A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor and includes several familiar faces from the Tempting Monsters series!
Kathryn Moon is a country mouse who started dictating stories to her mother at an early age. The fascination with building new worlds and discovering the lives of the characters who grew in her head never faltered, and she graduated college with a fiction writing degree. She loves writing women were are strong in their vulnerability, romances that are as affectionate as they are challenging, and worlds that a reader sinks into and never wants to leave. When her hands aren't busy typing they're probably knitting sweaters or crimping pie crust in Ohio. She definitely believes in magic.

it's so hard to rate this because it has all the things i normally avoid reading. this takes place in a pleasure house, he's a client, she's a virgin also he's centuries old and it mentioned that he normally goes a different pleasure house where the girls treated badly. on top of that this anti-hero kind of person suddenly falls in love with this ✨ virginal angel ✨ and becomes a good(?) person
so yeah i avoid this kind of tropes like the plague BUT it worked well in this book 🤨 she was a well-written character, her virginity wasn't glorified and she was comfortable with her blindness. he fell in love really quick but that was ok too.
it's hfn i guess because villain is still alive and there wasn't an epilogue but i won't continue reading the series, this was enough for me🏃🏼♀️🏃🏼♀️
A shape shifting snake that can turn you into stone if you look directly at his eyes. Oh, but what if his lover is blind? This was so good. Probably my favorite short story because it felt like a real story. By that I mean complete. A clear beginning, middle, and end. Full of all the monster goodness you find in this series.
I am glad I didn't read this story before book 2, because book 2 would have suffered from a much lower rating.
The reason for this, apparently pussy power is all is needed for a coalition to be formed against Birsha. That reasoning of that the ladies who sleep with the monsters are the ones who are going to make them fall in love with them for who they uniquely, monstrously are and then they'll turn against Birsha is very flimsy reasoning. Take into account that Marius has used Birsha's services/houses in the past. That essentially means he was mean, cruel and hurtful to other women, but you're just meant to overlook that because Lillian's curious, inquisitive, largely innocent and virginal powers apparently change him for the better.
And again, in this book, Birsha somehow manages to get away (but if he's not his slippery self, there wouldn't be a book 2). As I said, very soap opera villian shenanigans. I'll start calling him Stefano.
A sweet, slow-burn monster romance that totally stole my heart.
We meet Marius, a basilisk sent to spy on Star Manor by his rival, Lord Ashcroft. But his mission goes off the rails the second he meets Lillian, a blind woman who’s the only one immune to his deadly gaze. Talk about fate, right?
Their connection is instant yet tender and watching them fall for each other despite their differences was just… chef’s kiss. Marius is broody but secretly soft, and Lillian? She’s gentle but fierce in her own quiet way. Their romance builds slowly and feels so earned, no rushed feelings, just pure, heartfelt development.
It’s a cozy, uplifting read that’s perfect when you want something low-angst but deeply emotional!!
I thought this book had a clever set up and loved the pairing of a blind girl and a basilisk. The beginning of the book captivated me and I was rooting for them. But then I never got to know who Marius was. Like at all. His entire character was defined by the spying and the budding romance. There was no background, no explanation of what he’d done for the hundreds of years of his life. Lillian gets more background and I was able to invest in her as a character, even though she very rarely had chapters from her POV. It just felt half baked because of that.
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: abuse through medical system, discussion of trafficking
5 stars. A delightful return to the universe of A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor.
FMC Lillian has come to Star Manor after being imprisoned by a cousin who inherited her fortune and wished to wed her. The MMC Marius is a basilisk who is half heartedly spying on Star Manor. She’s blind. His gaze kills people. Match made in monster heaven. Delightfully steamy, gentle but dominating Marius helps Lillian uncover her desire.
Finally after so long, I was able to read this. A good short read. Wished it was longer only because I love this book universe so much. I really enjoyed the premise as well.
I read this after having read Rooksgrave, but not yet Company of Fiends and this was such cute little in-between little.
Coincidentally I had just dnf’d a book in which the scenes between (supposedly) virginal characters gave me the ick, but this story didn’t do that at all. Instead I thought it was just really well done with a perfect combination of innocence & curiosity.
So this was yanked down off KU bc I believe the author intends on expanding it. However, i think it stands on its own. I was impressed for 120 pages it’s very well done. I would rather more of the monster world keep ‘em coming both ways
This is a delightful novella, I am so happy Kathryn released it as a standalone. Lillian & Marius are a wonderful couple, I loved seeing their relationship develop and Lillian grow into her own with Marius’ support. His morally grey-ness made me instantly fall in love with him (being a basilisk and having ✨enhancing✨ venom are also huge pluses - I love all snake monsters)
5 star to KMoon, always. What a lovely novella to bridge the gap between A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor and The Company of Fiends!
Thank you Kathryn for this sweet & sexy Valentine’s Day treat 💋💕
(I wanna start off this review by saying Katheyn Moon is an incredible writer and THE BEST erotica writer I have ever had the pleasure of reading works from.....however...)
Noooooooo I'm so disappointed!! I LOVED, ADORED, WORSHIPED even the other two proper Tempting monsters novels but this novella was NOT IT. (For me).
Tortured, young naive virgin with literally no where else to go and nothing else to do but sell her body partnered with super experienced 1000 year old dude who is OK with patroning a rape house??? 🤢Nu-uh. Also he literally describes her as ugly in the beginning. Ew. Wtf. Turn off. Now I'm suddenly worried for the 3rd Tempting Monsters Book 😭 I hope it's not like this.
On the flip side: all scenes of intimacy between the two main characters were REALLY well written!! 11/10 spice and romance. AND THE ACTION WAS PERFECT. The later half of the book heats up and doesn't stop--the ending is an absolute bop. It just hurt to get there because...well... (see above)
Katheryn you are an absolute wizard at writing erotica!...even when the plot around it is ...questionable... 3 out 5 walking canes.
“i was entirely hers. i was entirely smitten. i was entirely in love with this woman.”
AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!! i absolutely adore everything kathryn moon and this novella was no exception. 💘🐍 this will definitely give me a lot of daydream material while i wait for a company of fiends to be published.
marius was an absolute dream! he was funny, patient, considerate, wicked, and a complete devil. lilian was sweet, fierce, feisty, and funny. i enjoyed her sm!!!
what i loved the most about this was the development of their relationship. they weren’t instantly taken with one another and HAD to get to know each other. marius went from being indifferent and seeing lilian as a job assignment to being obsessed and completely taken with her. lilian too went from seeing marius as a client to her protector and lover. i do wish the novella had been a bit longer just so that we could have gotten a little more scenes of them getting to know one another but, it is a novella so… i get it 🤷🏽♀️
This was surprisingly sweet, a love story between a basilisk and his newby whore. No really, I swooned several times, not to mention the build up, omg it was hot!!
Marius is super jaded so when the master of a brothel asks him to spy on another (one we know from a particular trilogy) he reluctantly agrees.
He’s heard all the rumors about how the witch Magdalena is the perfect monster/girl matchmaker but he’s rather dubious about it. Even after he meets his match, he judges Lillian pretty harshly.
Yes, Lillian is a bit frigid and she has a sharp tongue but Marius eventually discovers why and it’s as heartbreaking as it is infuriating.
Once he burrows under her icy veneer he soon begins to warm her from the inside out until she’s practically begging for everything he has to give her. In his case that includes pleasure heightening venom and an extremely clever tail.
I freaking love monster smut, this past year has proved how depraved my mind can grow and this only fueled that fire.
The story was so well paced and the affection between them grew organically. The climax was good but dammit it left me wanting more. I’d happily live as a fly on the wall if it was wherever these two were, particularly where they bed.
I feel like the ending was really abrupt. I know this was an expanded short story, and some extra was added, so why couldn't we get like two more pages where the leads actually discussed the events and their feelings?!?? Or idk even a short epilogue?
Instead it was an incredible rushed and unbelievable conversation: MMC: I'm sorry, you have every right to be mad. FMC: Why would I be mad? You had ulterior motives every second we spent together but I understand completely and everything is totally fine. MMC: Great. Also don't sleep with anyone else. Also I love you
Idk. The pacing was great otherwise and the characters were pretty solid (but a little flat). Overall enjoyed it, as I do everything Kathryn Moon writes
She's a virgin, he's a monster and he's so much older than she is. That's a lot of tropes that I really don't like, so why did I enjoy this book so much?
I loved the gothic and historical tone of the universe. The characters were very well written and so was the side plot. The author did not make a whole thing out of her virginity - which I greatly appreciated - and the smut was nicely paced and well written too. I don't usually go for 𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴 and 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴 and 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘴 but that didn't bother so much this time. The love story was cute: a "she fell first but he fell harder" kinda love. Or was it more "he fell first and he fell harder"? I really enjoyed it and only cringed maybe twice.
I really love this world/series and this was the perfect thing to keep me going until the next full length book is out. I would say you have to have read the previous books before this novella for context but they’re all amazing and some of my favourite monster books of all time with different spice/characters that help keep everything fresh and new! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶 Monster x human Blind fmc Sex work Virgin fmc Tail play
I didn’t deserve the treasure I’d gained, but I would never let Lillian know as much. She was mine, entirely.
I LOVED THIS, I ATE IT UP. This was a fantastic little bite from the Tempting Monsters universe. It was so good seeing Star Manor, Magdalena, and Khepri again after the events in A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor.
Marius was amazing, I freaking loved him, especially the way he is with Lillian. Allowing her freedom to make mistakes and take risks. Plus we just have to swoon for a monster who is falling in love but swears he isn't. 🥺
Lillian is such a gem. We get some much deserved vision impairment rep and she's not completely helpless, even though others treat her this way. Serving real hard Toph Beifong vibes and I am 600000% here for it.
The spice of course was scorching. It may be a short novella, but Kathryn Moon managed to pack enough spice and fluff to keep me feasting until book 2 releases.
This lovely little novella was originally published in a limited edition anthology that I read last year. I love Kathryn's writing and love the world that she has created with the Tempting Monsters books.
What do you do with a basilisk? Well, meet Lillian, a girl with a feature that helps Marius be his true self.
📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: The Basilisk of Star Manor by Kathryn Moon
📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Monster romance
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Marius is a basilisk spying on Star Manor for a rival. But when he arrives, he meets Lillian. She’s naive and untouched, but also blind… meaning she can survive his deadly scare.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: This scratched an itch for sure. Kathryn Moon can’t really write a bad book, and the fact that this was a novella was just perfect. 120 pages, a good plot and enough spice to see it through.
Marius was a villain turned white knight. Lillian was fun to read as Marius drew her out of her shell. And once again, I found myself attracted to a snake. Go figure.
🔮 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲: Easy. Kathryn Moon details anatomy well and the “creatures” are standard monsters we all know and love.
📝 𝗔 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲… This ties into the plot of Lady at Rooksgrave Manor. But I am thinking you can read this easily as a standalone.
