Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
I'll just start by saying that this is the best story I've read by this author. Is this the best mafia related book I've read? No. But compared to her other books (which I tried reading after this duet - this one is a winner).
There were a lot of cliches and also a lot of moments in which I though "hmm..this doesn't make much sense" BUT it was overall enjoyable and there was a PLOT (it was in parts OTT and maybe ridiculous but good enough to make me stick with it).
Also, I liked the first book of the duet better. In the second, the first part of it was very much filler and just unnecessary.
Typical mafia story focused on family betrayal. So happy for once the H isn’t some naive 18yr old virginal bride. Esme & Artem had some great chemistry. Story started dragging towards the end. Will read book #2
This book was a struggle to get through. I started skimming halfway. Here are my reasons why: - Lots of inconsistencies with time and small plot points - Unrealistic scenes, even for a mafia romance (i.e. sex in a club bathroom while your friend is passed out right nearby and you just almost got raped?!) - Lack of connection between the main characters (they don't even say they love each other in this book) - Wayyyyyy too much writing for the amount of action/plot that took place. This book could have been half the length and still gotten the story across. - Cliffhanger (that's not worth it and doesn't make me want to get the next book)

It was not bad nor good either. I have no idea why I kinda liked this one. The starting was good but I was getting bored by 80% (and yeah I fell asleep too), AND then none other then the dear old uncle came and I'm pissed now.
friends, let's be honest. we don't read books like these for revolutionary, literary fiction, and i think it's important to rate things for what they are and what they're here to do. gilded cage provided the tropes, the angst, the butterflies, and the action! the characters were lowkey likeable but also entertaining in their unlikeable moments, the writing was better than i expected and AHH that CLIFF-HANGER ENDING. like i actually liked this and it was the easy, entertainment i was looking for!!
here are some of my rapid-fire thoughts: - the one thing that kept taking me out of this book was the use of the word "don." it takes two seconds to search what the mexican cartel or the russian mafia call their mob bosses, or even JUST SAY MOB BOSS. we all know what don means bc of pop culture, the godfather, etc. but IT'S STILL ITALIAN even the irish side character said his dad was the don of the irish mob like???? anyway, this was a personal pet peeve - as for the pregnancy trope, i've realized that i only hate it when it's the plot twist at the end and a reason why the relationship/plot comes together. here, it's literally in the synopsis and happens in the first 15% and it kind of became ... adorable? - it's first person dual-pov which is always fun, but the male voice came off as being written by a women forcing a masculine tone (i feel like the author improved this by the halfway mark bc i wasn't bothered anymore lmao) - it does get slow at times and honestly i skimmed their inner monologues and descriptions often ahah
I hate mafia books yet I am impelled to keep reading them. I hate the violence, the over the top intimate scenes and the killing, yet I keep getting more. I skip over the smex scenes because they are a little crude but the violence and killing just come out of nowhere. So why do I read them? The men are amazingly hot and so very alpha. I know I should be embarrassed but darn if they aren't fun to read about. This one marries the girl and he tries to keep her and his baby safe. The only thing I didn't realize, is its a cliffhanger! So be warned. And dang me again because I am going to read it! Did I mention Cillian? He's his hot friend but I am worried where this is going....
Why was this 650 pages? Why did it end on a cliffhanger? Why don't I care enough about the characters to keep reading? Honestly, this wasn't what I thought it would be. Far too serious and way too long for what it was.
I don't normally like long books but this one was fab! It was well paced so I didn't mind the length too much. It ends on a good cliffhanger so I'm excited to read the second book!
“Sorry,” he chuckles. “It’s not like I took her up on the offer.” “No. You didn’t exactly push her away, though,” I reply. “Would you prefer I had?” “Yes,” I say simply. “Alright, then,” Artem says. “Next time, I’ll push.” “Push hard,” I tell him. “Like, off the plane, preferably.” He smiles. “Anything for you, my wife.”
OMG, THE ANGST IS THIS IS REAL. Gilded Cage was non-stop angst, banter and exciting fights between Esme and Artem. Is it the best Mafia book I have ever read? It was entertaining enough to keep me laughing and curious about what will happen next.
The plotline is fast and very predictable. It was a meh plotline, but the character's growth was the one I was rooting for. I think the best scenes are always with Cillian and Artem, and their friendship is everything. I will do anything for Cillian.
The action of the book was here and there. There wasn't much mafia storyline, just a glimpse here and there till the cliffhanger. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
"Not a chance, kukolka,” I rasp to myself when she’s gone. “You’re mine until the day we both die.”
Wtf did I just read. I’ve read Wattpad books that have a better storyline!
The book had no relations to being a mafia book, the storyline was absolutely boring. By constantly putting sloppy sex scenes every 2 seconds doesn’t make this book appealing or even give it a storyline.
I was told when he kills her family, she discloses she’s pregnant but rather we only find about it half way. She gets married to Artem who claims to be the head of the Russian mafia. I’m laughing at the point cause this little boy can not even act like a man, and he claims to be the Don.
She further finds out her husband killed her beloved brother and what does she do? Run and then gets caught by him and they have sex!??? I am confusion - NO LIKE LITERALLY!!!!!!
She’s definitely not a strong character but rather a stupid one and don't get me started on Artem, he clearly does not know how to run a mafia if the people working for him are betraying him.
I don’t know this author at all, never read her books and after this read it’s safe to say I will be NEVER reading her other books. Her writings style is absolutely childish. You can’t write a book with no storyline but expect the high school sex will save your ass. Mafia romance is my absolute fav but some authors should really stick to bullying or some other trope if they don’t know how to write actual mafia books. This book had no basis of mafia content as all! Like claiming there was a shooting and showing how super smart the main guy is and hyping him up is so cringe!
People really write something else in the Blurb and present something else in the book. I will definitely not recommend this book.
"—Soy Artem Kovalyov, Don de la Bratva Kovalyov —termino. Mi voz resuena en las montañas que nos rodean. Dura, inflexible. La voz de un hombre capaz de repartir muerte a sus enemigos."
Umm okay I’m just gonna say this book had part I loved and parts that were like pretty indifferent
Ésme
“Abracadabra, presto change-o: the don’s daughter. His beautiful, caged bird. It makes me sick to my fucking stomach.”
Literal love of my life, girl was trapped in a cage by her father. She’s a Mexican drug lord’s daughter and the dad is an abusive piece of shit. HOWEVER, she is shockingly not the innocent virgin who like barely understands mafia. Like she has fucked ppl, she like idk she’s a human who makes sense like she’s a badass bitch okay.
“I remind myself of who I am—or at least, who I’m expected to be: Esmeralda Moreno, princess of the Moreno cartel, the most eligible bachelorette in the entire Mexican drug world.”
Like yes I do the cooking, yes I do the cleaning. Idk I liked her character, like the way she was truly trapped was so sad but really intresting to see. Also she spits absolute facts such as
“Men are vile.” Like so true best friend. Anyways she is almost like assaulted and she’s saved by main guy whuch I do indeed hate this trope especially sense they fuck after, however I think it’s important to say that yes it was used as a plot device however at least she was like affected by it and sjit, also like idk
“Papa is dead. And I’m relieved? That’s the first thing that I feel the moment he says the words. Does that make me an awful person? Does that make a terrible daughter? I don’t know.”
LIKE BASED BESTIE BASED BESTIE
“No,” I correct, “my father controlled me. I wasn’t allowed to go to a normal school with other kids because he didn’t want me to be influenced by ideas other than his. He didn’t want me meeting boys or having a life of my own. I was raised in a cage, and I thought when my father died, I would be free from it. But here I am again, right back where I started. Same bird, different cage.”
She deserves everything
“Except that in this version, Cinderella is being forced to marry the prince, who’s more brutal than charming and she also happens to be pregnant with his child, though she’s keeping that from him, even though they already had sex in a club bathroom months ago and then parted ways without exchanging names, and that would’ve been the end of it but then he came charging back into her life to murder her father and burn down the only home she’s ever known…”
Plus like idk she’s just funny and shit bye
Um okay artem So his name is artem which I’m sorry like artem....artem like girl was going “yes artem harder” which 🧍🏾♀️
He was daddy issues, dead mom, son of mafia don, Russian, dead wife, só like the traumatic past is checked off. Umm he was funny sometimes
“I’m used to waging war with my guns and fists. Esme is ready to do it with her ass and tits.”
Like HELP.
“Are you, Artem?” I ask in a muted voice. “Are you a monster?” “Aren’t we all? At the end of the day, we’re all just beasts.” That’s a coward’s answer. He knows it. I know it. I want more truth. “And what kind of beast are you?” “The kind that would die to protect you.”
Also just like king behavior I’m sorry like ughhh
“Why not?” she counters, her chin jutting out a little. “It’s peaceful and quiet and we don’t have to worry about anyone trying to kill us.” “I’ll kill every single man who even thinks of hurting you,” I tell her firmly. She nods. “I know that. I just wish you didn’t need to.”
Like what he would sacrifice for her and omg okay
So like here was my issues: This book was long like long asf and like it didn’t need to be, I’m not gonna say I struggled to read it cuz I didn’t however it was like 650 pages like it could be cut down to like 500 there was a lot of uneccesary fluff like the last 100 pages or so where nothing rlly happened and I was just like ig this is cute but like plot besties plot. There are 0 characters rlly besides the main, and like every friend type character besides cillian is purely created to just advance the plot in someway like they have 0 depth at all.

"My father likes to flaunt his possessions. And unfortunately for me, I’m his crown jewel."
Esmeralda Moreno is the daughter of a Mexican drug lord. Her father treats her as a collateral and wants to marry her off just to expand his buisness. Esme's life is controlled and she feels trapped in her own house. So, just to experience one night of freedom, she sneaks out to a club in LA with her cousin.
"But it’s his eyes that draw my attention the most. Even in this chaotic club, they stand out. They’re darker than anything else. Angrier. More intense. And they’re locked dead on me."
Esme meets Artem at the club's bathroom and he saves her from a horrible situation. They spend some steamy moments together but they agree not to ever share their names with each other. Fast forward four months later, Esme discovers that she's pregnant with Artem's baby but doesn't know how to find the stranger she met at the club and is terrified of her father's reaction if he finds out the truth.
"I hate him and yet I’m fascinated to him, drawn to him, both terrified of him and desperate to feel safe in his arms once more."
She spends hours worrying about her and her baby's safety but suddenly, some soldiers infiltrate her house and ruin it to ashes. She meets Artem Kovalyov- the heir to the Russian Bratva and finds out that he had orchestrated the attack on her father's cartel. She thinks that they were going to finish her off along with all her father's men but Artem had some different plans. He takes her to him house and she's forced into another life of captivity.
"I know I need to be very careful. More careful than usual, even. Because when it comes to Esme Moreno, I’m not as in control as I like to be."
The book was all things mafia! It definitely matched up to my expectations. Nicole Fox's stories match up to Natasha Knight's level for me. She sure knows how to write a good mafia romance. I loved the chemistry between Artem & Esme. At first, I thought Artem was impulsive and arrogant but he was definitely good at whatever he did. I felt really bad for him when his past was revealed at 79% and he deserved a break from all the stress his life in the Bratva caused him. Esme was really strong, brave, sassy and she put up a good fight. She wasn't a coward nor was she weak. Overall, I liked the plot and the cliffhanger has got me on the edge of my seat. I'm definitely going to read the next book and after finishing that, I'll be able to say whether I recommend reading this duet.
Before you wonder, yes, this is a cliffhanger. And yes, the author has promised book 2 one week later, so don't freak out. Now, this is your typical Nicole Fox mafia story. The mafia hero wants to stay/wants to go, he's a bad guy/he'll do what he needs to make his woman happy. Frankly I felt as if I've read this book before. True, the storyline if different, but the themes and underlining ideas are ones we've seen before from this author. I'd like to see something new.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Esme Moreno is the daughter of a Mexican drug lord who has lived her entire life locked up, in fear of her abusive father. Artem is the son of the Don of the Bratva and he still tries to prove himself to him. Artem and Esme meet by chance in a club in LA where they have a 🔥🔥🔥 encounter in a bathroom. But it will take months until they see each other again. Artem storms Esme’s house killing everyone except her, his plans for her are different. The Don wants his son and Esme married bc with that alliance he will be able to get more contacts for his business. Esme exchanges one cage for other, bc although she is attracted to her husband, once again it is the men who decide her fate, so she decides to plan her escape, but an unexpected turn of events makes her have to flee from someone more dangerous than Artem. Love, passion, action, betrayals, family secrets... and much more. I ❤️❤️it, and I’m dying to see how it continues. Can the 2 lovers survive all the dangers that threaten them? ❤️Cillian by the way, super loyal and funny. I hope to see his HEA.
I thought I'd write this review to earn those who feel the way I do about cliffhangers. I paid for a book with a beginning middle and end. I will not buy this author again and wish I could get my money back. She could have used some of the pages and pages of unnecessary sex scenes to give the story an ending. This was such a disappointing book.
Oookaaay ... where do I start? Do I start at the comments from other readers; warning me that this wasn't such a good idea? Some even giving a one star? With a single commentary "Nope"? I disregarded all of 'em, hoping I would find myself a treasure. I mean, the plot sounded intriguing ... However, to my own fault (that I didn't heed my fellow readers' reviews) - I couldn't finish the book. It was too damn long. Some scenes were just too much; and too out of this world to even make sense. For instance: the heroine initiated sex in the bathroom of a dingy nightclub - after she had gotten away from being raped from another guy - only minutes after. I don't blame the Hero, if I were him I'd go "Hey, I'd take anything." So really, I don't blame the Hero from taking a beautiful 'gift' - especially given by a gorgeous girl. But her? She went from 10 to 5 in an instant - in my eyes.
And then, after they got married, and upon knowing he had killed her beloved brother, she still couldn't refused him. It's like she had no backbone. It's a mood killer, that one ... where the girl couldn't stand up for herself. The minute the Hero as much as kissed her, she "melted". Ah f*** that. So uhmmm, NO. Maybe I should've just commented with a mere "No." Plus!!! The story still had 500 over pages that I hadn't ventured. I couldn't figure out what else the author could write to fill in those 500 over pages - one that is full of angst and interesting plots that is. This was an unfinished read.
