The freedom of the range, the bawling of the longhorns, the lonesome night watch beneath a vast, starry sky—they got into a man's blood until he knew there was nothing better than the life of a cowboy...except the love of a good woman.

Melody

When Chet Atmore rode into the Spring Water Ranch, he was only a dusty drifter, hoping to find a fresh horse and stay one step ahead of his reputation as a gunfighter. But by the next morning he was being pressured into several unfamiliar roles: Young Neill Jordan saw him as some kind of hero, with guns ablazing; the ranch foreman hoped he'd be the savior who could stand up to their land-hungry neighbor, Lantz Royal; and the lovely new owner of the Spring Water had offered him a job as a cowboy. Most disturbing of all, Melody was looking for a husband, and when Chet held her soft, sweet body against his, he was tempted to fulfill every one of her expectations...and more.

I sure do love a good western. This one has gunslingers, murders, kidnappings and most of all a good romance!

Another great story from Leigh Greenwood....
This is a great read there's action, drama and most of all romance *sigh*

Chet is one of the orphans Jake and Isabelle adopted in book one with his brother Luke.....Unfortunately both brothers have gone astray from the couple and became gunfighter for a living...... Chet didn't choose to be like their real father but he has to leave Jake and Isabelle by following Luke and make sure he is safe and won't get himself into BIG trouble...

Chet acts what a big brother should be for his own and last kin Luke.... He loves the life they have found with Jake and Isabelle but it became impossible for him to comeback after he took gunfighter... His fear is that people who he love to be endanger if he stay close to them so he makes sure to put distance with himself and people that matters to him... He also denies himself a chance of family and happiness...

The heroine doesn't approve of violence so she was almost prepared to sacrifice herself on he altar to save people she loves... I use the word Sacrifice because it would really be if she would marry the rich rancher Lantz.... he is annoying.... he is assuming... selfish and a bully..... until she met the hero and realize that sacrificing herself isn't the last choice she has... that she can fight for her and family's right if she would only choose to fight for what she really wants... That is the chance to fall in love and to be with him.... She is not a total helpless woman even from the start, she tried to fight but her way won't be enough to survive in Texas until Chet came along and showed her how and slowly she was able to accept Chet's reasoning despite her fears and love him fully anyway.

The thing that keep Chet and Melody from being together is the fear....
Chet fearing for the life of people he loves when his past comeback chasing him... and
Melody easily flinch and scare with anything to do with guns, fighting and blood....

Though Melody was the first to overcome her fear; Chet isn't an easy man to persuade that there could be a future for them... That she would stand with him.... She can bare a life in hardship as long as she would be given a chance to be with him... She believes that she is a lucky one to find something as wonderful as love and she won't give it up no matter what.... He fights every reason Melody could come up with and insist that he can't have a normal life..... and in the end he had accepted that no matter what he would risked it for Melody and he could not leave her... never..... he tried many times tho and he failed everytime as well...

After reading a couple of these books there are a few Leigh greenwood staples that are starting to irk me:

The heroine has to chase the hero
The hero is always right. The only time he can be wrong is if he’s pushing the heroine away because he doesn’t deserve her (which is still kinda treated as him being right)
Strong heroines are only okay if the hero gets to take her down a few pegs and/or use her strength and goodness to disparage other women
Women don’t know how to raise boys
Guns = good

And I know some of these are staples of the genre but there’s bad vibes in the way Leigh greenwood does them. Based on the summary I guess I have higher hopes for the next one of these, if I ever read it

Did I like this one better than Buck? No. A woman chasing a man seems to be Mr. Greenwood's MO in most of his books, and that's not my style. As of now, the my rankings are:

1. Jake
2. Buck
3. Ward (Begrudgingly, this is 3rd. Putting that whole bedroom scene to the side. But I reserve the right to move this ho lower...)
4. Chet

This was the first of The Cowboys series that I've read. In a way, I sort of expected it to be a little better than it was, but overall it was a good book. Leigh Greenwood's books are subtle on the romance but full of drama. He portrays the "wild west" well...I can't really think of much to say about this book other than I liked Chet and Luke...I hated the choice Luke made in the end even though I understood why he did it...I couldn't stand the Royal characters, but every story has a bad guy right...I'm sure if you've like other books in this series, or any Leigh greenwood book for that matter, than you will probably like this book as well.

Most relatable herione. I like the series, it goes down like candy. The plot is not too different from each book but it's captivating.
