Hannah was lovely enough to make any man forget the past--any man except Buck Hogan. For thought she had more than fulfilled the promise of beauty in the 14-year-old girl he'd once known, Buck would always remember that back then he had been her father's whipping boy. Helpless no longer, he would have his revenge by taking the old man's ranch. The only thing he hadn't counted on was falling in love with Hannah. .

Not bad saying the writer is a man and he writes Western romance. I was quite impressed on how he developed the story line and the characters in this book. I guess I need to read the rest of the books I got by him

Not quiet a four or five star but there is not 3 1/2. It's a story about the revenge of a boy who was sold as a slave, he ends up owning 1/2 the ranch where he was abused. He is full of hate and at the time did not realize the daughter and wife of the rancher had been abused as well. They all help each other along with his adoptive family plus other ranchers and organise a cattle muster to see if they can track who is stealing the cattle. His sister appears with dire consequences. HEA ending.

The main characters in this one are around the same age, so that's a major plus. It was a sweet story, but the author did a lot of preaching about the differences between men and women and it got old. Definitely enjoyed this one more than Ward, but maybe not as much as Jake. TBD.

I didn't like it at all and it's kinda sad since I love other books of this author. The hero of this book is full of hatred and the romance came a bit late so it's unsatisfying for me. :(

A fast read in a true western setting. This author's romance series are so consistently, highly rated that I was eager to sample any of them. If this book is wholly representative of the other books, then I would generally categorize the writing style as "Harlequin-esque western historical", the extended versions.

One very nice thing was that as a reader, I wasn't left "wanting" at the end of 300 pages as can often happen with romance novels of this nature. While the story could definitely have been truncated at 300 pages, everything was finished rather nicely in 400 pages without dropping the story's pace. That is talent when it comes to this style of writing.

I would have given the book 4 stars, but the story, and particularly the heroine's words, thoughts and actions were so inconsistent with how she was raised and changed so quickly that it made the entire story weak and implausible.

The heroine and her mother were abused by her father for 20 years and also kept isolated from nearly any other contact. They also lived just outside a strict religious sect where women were only seen and not heard. Women were treated no better than slaves and this characterized the heroine's home life.

The story also indicated that the mother and daughter cared about each other, but had always had a superficial relationship.

So it makes it really hard to believe that such a woman as the heroine, or her mother for that matter, could so quickly develop a rapport or any kind of relationship with a large, muscular strange man, accompanied by an abused, former black slave with understandably jaded views of whites and women as well.

I think the characters and subjects were a little too complex to tackle in this writing style. However, I did actually like the story line.

I will probably try a different book in the series. Browsing through some of the other books' synopses along with confidence in Goodreads' membership ratings, I would I expect to enjoy a different series volume more and would be more likely to issue a 4-star rating or higher.

A good story but somehow lacking emotion—which is odd considering there were some quite emotional scenes. It's hard to explain. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I tore through the book, trying to finish it more quickly than it deserved. One particular scene did bring tears to my eyes and the end was beautiful, but I still feel almost as if I didn't actually read it. The heroine, Hannah, was someone I could relate to and for once, her personality seemed consistent. Buck was someone fighting the typical results of a lifetime of physical abuse and from what I noticed, Greenwood did his research rather well on that score. Overall, it was worth the read.

This was overall a very entertaining Western with likable multi-dimensional good guys and I really enjoyed it until it neared the end. The bit where Melissa was being paid off was too far fetched and didn't really seem to jive with the quality of the rest of the book, which up to that time had been a gritty, realistic human drama and the absurdity of that subplot kind of ruined an otherwise good story for me. Not a good idea to end a book leaving a bad taste in the reader's mouth by suddenly turning a engaging story hokey. If I had lost the book after reading about 90% of it, I would have given it 5-stars.

I remember this story and when I read the part about him being whipped I flinched because I couldn't imagine anyone having to indure that kind of pain
