BITTER FATE
Summer Ashton almost welcomed the news of the pirates boarding the Sea Otter. Anything would be better than joining the old man she'd been forced to wed by proxy—even death at the point of a sword. But as the handsome pirate captain undressed her with his flashing sapphire eyes, she began to tremble with new fears…and new desires. For she sensed a fury in this man she did not understand…and passions she knew she could not control.

SWEET VENGEANCE
Brent Douglas couldn't believe he'd been lucky enough to capture the bride of his most hated enemy. Fate had finally given him the perfect opportunity for revenge. How much would the old earl enjoy his new wife knowing Brent had beaten him to the marriage bed? By the time Brent was through with the beautiful young countess, he'd know every inch of her luscious flesh, have tasted the sweetness of her first kiss…and have ruined her for any other man. For she'd spend the rest of her days yearning for one more night filled with the savage ecstasy of the Captain's Caress.

I hate to admit it but this was so fab the 80s clinch cover romances hit different as a beach read.

This books has too much activity going on at the end and then end rather quickly. I don't really like the strategy off adding action toward the end when you should be winding down.

This is the story of a great, hulking blond brute of a hero and the beautiful and irrational harpy who loves him. The hero, Brent, is a douchebag and the heroine, Summer, is the female equivalent of one. A classic 80s "rapemance" filled with all cliches. So gloriously ridiculous.

I was entertained from the first page to the very last. There are some amazing scenes that had me chortling with glee. One in particular has a shrieking nursemaid running around through a burning nursery in a total panic, headed for the door. . . only to have the hero open it on her face and knock her out cold, mid-shriek. She's left there until some footmen come to drag her out. LOL.

Better yet, the villain of the piece (Summer's husband) tears off her nightgown in an attempt to rape her into consummating their marriage ("I have you now, by God, and I shall take you right here on the floor. I’m going to skewer you like a trussed lamb, harrow and seed you until you’ve been planted with my heir.") only to find out she's already pregnant. (She, delightfully, tells him: "I’ve already been harrowed and seeded, and I bear the fruit of that cultivation.") He wants to beat the baby out of her and thus chases the naked and obviously pregnant heroine around the room until she dashes towards a dresser and pulls out her pistol letting him know she'd been waiting for this moment. What happens after that? It gets crazier, more hilarious and even more entertaining. Hands down, the greatest scene EVER.

Haha! Just trashy and wonderful. I never wanted this book to end.

3 stars... cause it wasn't good, but it was "gooooood."

this started out great, had a "what the hell was this?" middle, and a "barely kept me interested" ending.
plus, what year was this? the language was so modern. also, the lovemaking was a little too prosy for me..just a huge paragraph of metaphors. hum.
all that said, it wasn't a bad book. something kept me going!

Read this for book club and it was terrible! Don't think I'll be making a habit of reading romance novels anytime soon! It was entertaining at the very least but I definitely wanted to slap the main characters. Felt like I was reading about a bunch of preteens doing very adult things.

This was a hard book to read. I was disappointed at the Captain Brent. I feel he was a rapist through out half the book. He just doesn't listen to anyone. But after I got thru half the book the plot got better. Did he change? It's all on your point of view. In my opinion this was not one of Leigh best books.

DNF @ 60%

It starts off so very interesting but then it lost its momentum talking about mundane stuff. At 50% of the story, I remembered the start of the story that the hero kidnapped the heroine for revenge. But for the majority of the book, the revenge set up was never followed up, at least for the 60% that I read. Instead, the author kept focusing on slice of life, forced seduction on the heroine, more slice of life, more forced seduction, more slice of life and repeat. I only kept on reading in hope that it will address some of the revenge motives for the plot but I got too tired of the mundane slice of life bullshit.

Also, I didn't like the 180 degrees personality change at 40% of the novel where the hero was possessive to 200% and then turned into a "I need to push you away and push you into other men's embrace." It was an odd, bizarre and sudden change.

The book just felt like it fell apart, sadly.
