Mary Jane Elizabeth Behrends Clark (1954-) is the author of thirteen novels, including 12 in the KEY News media thriller series, and one in her new Wedding Cake mystery series. A veteran writer and producer for CBS News, Clark worked for almost three decades at the network’s New York City headquarters. Her books are published in twenty-three languages. She lives in New Jersey and Florida.
3.5 stars. In this book from 2004, thirty-two year old Grace Callahan interns for the summer at KEY News. She is competing with younger college students for a full-time job when the internship is over. The news team will spend the next week broadcasting from Newport, Rhode Island. There's a Victorian mansion with a tunnel to the ocean that was used as part of the underground railroad. A body is found in the tunnel. Someone has no problem killing again to keep the old secret.
I noticed a lot of eavesdropping in this story. It was full of characters thrown in as red herrings. The killer could have been any number of people and I confess I didn't know who it was.
If you like a mystery with clean language and non-graphic scenes, try this one. I read so many dark stories that I appreciate a lighter one every once in awhile. Many of the chapters are very short so the story moves quickly. Solid 3.5 stars because it kept me guessing.
I found this book to be incredibly dull. On the bright side, it was very successful in putting me to sleep each time I suffered from insomnia these past 2 months.
Grace Callahan joins the KEY News as an intern during their broadcasts from Newport Rhode Island. With suspects galore the mystery deepens about who killed the socialite whose skeleton is found 14 year later in a dark tunnel that goes back to the time of the Underground Railroad.
In short order the daughter of the socialite is found dead at the bottom of the 40 Steps below the Cliff Walk. Then an intern disappears and another is killed. Who is the killer?
Grace comes to Newport after a failed marriage with the hope of jump-starting a new career. Could there be romance also in her future, or will she too become a target?
I am beginning to think that when the author starts the books she has no idea who did it, then somewhere in the middle she picks the most unlikely and illogical candidate and then tailors the rest of the story to make it work.
And the story line with her ex-husband was complete shit. First the guy tells her he is going to try to gain primary custody of their 14 year old daughter. She sends the daughter to the fathers for his regular custodial weekend and travels from New York to Rhode Island for her job. The husband, his new wife and the daughter show up for God only knows what reason. And the husband cheats on his new wife and of course his ex catches him. What was the point of that story line? Who would do all that the day after filing for custody?
This book is part of the 12 KEY News Series. She is a great author when you feel likea "comfortable mystery". They have little hard core violence and the language is not offensive. It is the equivalent of eating your favorite comfort food. Knowing this, I rated her book a 4 as she delivered what I needed for this novel.
Okay fluff mystery, but pay attention to all the little characters, even those not mentioned often. You never know who might have done it. Again, seems to have too many undeveloped characters. She needs to work on making the readers relate to the characters.
I really enjoyed this book. Nobody in this perfect seaside resort town ever imagined that the body of a missing heiress might be found deep in a tunnel beneath her family's crumbling Newport estate. Nobody, that is, but the last person to see her alive. Now, as a KEY News crew investigates the murder, a cold-blooded killer lives in fear of discovery. Too many reporters are closer than they realize to the truth behind a chilling secret...
For thirty-two-year-old KEY News intern Grace Callahan, the Newport assignment is the chance of a lifetime. The single mom is determined to win a coveted staff position, but that means outshining equally ambitious-and far younger-rivals.
When the killer begins to target those closest to Grace, she must face the real danger that lurks in an otherwise idyllic town. In a race against time, Grace must find the courage to delve into Newport's secrets, protect her daughter, and stop a ruthless killer who's determined to win this deadly game of hide and seek...
I read it, I enjoyed it. It was kind of ... I don't want to sound like I think I'm better than somebody, but it read like it had been dumbed down. Shorter, less complex sentences, smaller vocabulary. Kind of like the new Nancy Drew books, where they rewrote the originals for what they obviously considered to be a less literate population of young girls? Like that. But a plus -despite a relatively -actually kind of almost absurdly high - body count, there was no gore to speak of and no nightmare potential either.
I’ll admit, I picked up this book at a thrift store thinking it was a Mary Higgins Clark novel—spoiler alert, it’s not. That said, it wasn’t a bad read. While the writing could have been a bit stronger in places, the author did a great job with the setting. I felt like I was right there on the Cape, and that vivid sense of place really pulled me in. I also enjoyed most of the characters, who brought depth and interest to the story. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, even if it didn’t completely blow me away.
Grace Callahan becomes a summer intern for a TV news program. Grace is almost 30 years old so much older than any of the other candidates. TV news is a ruthless business but then you add someone who doesn't want his terrible secret to come out and you have people dying and .....
I didn't realize this the the 7th in a series I may have enjoyed it more if I had know the backstories of the people.
Mary is a smooth read, easy to follow and entertaining. I enjoyed her descriptions of Newport so much that I want to visit there now. She is good at instilling doubt as to who may have committed the crimes. Although I did guess who the bad person was, I had backed off of my decision as the book went on. She wove motive and opportunity scenarios around several persons, leaving me to think, well hell, who dunnit?
Enjoyed that the language was clean and there was no graphic violence or sex. Just an enjoyable read. Also, even though there were many characters in the book, the author always mentioned something about the characters when she wrote about them that would jog your memory as to who that was. I loved the very short chapters which made it easier to read, take a break, and pick back up again. I would definitely read another of Mary Jane Clark's books.
This was a great summer read. I especially enjoyed the fact that it took place in Newport, Rhode Island and highlighted several of the places I have recently visited. Love the characters, details and social aspects of life in this historical place.
.I really like all of Mary Jane Clarks books. I would recommend this book to all my friends and acquaintances. She commands all of my attention and has a surprise ending. I also read a couple of her first published books twice..
Enjoyed the main plot of the murder mystery. Way, way too much filler. Didn't need the complete text of the news shows. Or a detailed description of what every one was wearing and eating. Short chapters made it an easy read and made it easy to skim over the unnecessary parts.
I really enjoyed this book. I didn't skim through any parts and it held my interest well. It had all the good parts, the ocean, a death, a mystery.......fun read!
Inna Mary Clark, ale też pisze krótkimi rodziałami... Niestety fabuła trochę nudzi, ale zakończenie bardzo mnie zaskoczyło. Miałam 2 podejrzanych, ale oba pudła :P Ocena 4,5
