NOTE: THE TRISKELION EDITION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE/SEE ELLORA'S CAVE EDITION WITH ADDED SCENES! "Imagine my forcing you to bring all of your secret fantasies to life. Have you lost your freedom, Madison? Or won it back?"
Thrust into a world of bondage and submission to uncover an abusive Dom in one of New York's BDSM clubs, undercover journalist Madison Garrett strives to maintain her freedom while training for her most challenging role. When she discovers her arrogant boss, Drake Williams, is the masked "Master D" training her, secret fantasies come to life and passions unfurl.
Drake chains her, trains her and makes her beg for his touch. But Madison bows to no man. When word of Madison's plans leaks out, submissives matching her description are brutally attacked. Drake has no choice. To save the woman who has enslaved his heart, he must take her training to the highest level.
This is, without a doubt, the most TSTL (too stupid to live) heroine I've EVER encountered (and as a romance reader, I've "known" dozens.) But I should have known from the description. I don't know that I was smoking that I didn't notice the problem.
You see, TSTL is an "undercover journalist" who decides to train as a sub to uncover a Dom that is hurting women in some S&M clubs. The problem? Almost within a couple of days, HER COVER IS BLOWN. However, she's hell bent on going in regardless. How the heck can you be undercover if the bad guy KNOWS you're after him? Every spy worth his salt knows that once the people you're after know what you're up to, then you should close up shop and give the job to somebody else. But our heroine believes herself a superwoman and keeps insisting on going even though there's a high possibility things won't end up well.
Some spoilers
All of TSTL's preparation to 'going in the club' involves getting trained on being a slave and having orgasms. She DOESN'T DO ANY RESEARCH (yes, she's supposed to be a journalist) and even Drake calls her on that because she makes some stupid mistakes out of ignorance. At the end, she doesn't even have a plan in place before going in and gets hurt badly.
The BDSM aspect was sort of gross in parts. There was lots of detail about shaving the nether regions and talk of slave this and slave that. Her relationship with her brothers was also gross. At some point, she's wearing a thin dress and they start checking if she has underwear *throwing up now.*
Absolutely nothing redeeming in this book. If you have it, just chuck it out of a window. You'll get more satisfaction out of it.
I could see where the author was going with this, but it didn't really work for me.
The major conflict of the story is based on mistaken assumptions and poor communication. Not just between the h/h, but it is pretty indicative of things when the gossip mill seems to supply more accurate, relevant information to the main characters than they provide to each other. Also, relationship misadventures due to miscommunication bothers me in mainstream romance, in bdsm it's even worse. The doesn't-seem-all-that-sane-or-consensual group scenes seriously squicked me out, and I wasn't even there -- the heroine seemed traumatized even before being captured by the villain. And the end, where her trauma is cured by the magical lovin' of the hero -- I don't even... smh.
There was a lot of WTFery, not much communication or negotiation, and it didn't seem very romantic to me at all. I doubt that I'll be trying more by this author.
A lot of BDSM scenes. I wasn’t emotionally drawn in. I wanted more details about some of the plot development.
NO ONE BUT MADISON by Doreen Orsini.
STORY BRIEF: Madison grew up with three tough older brothers. She is a tough woman able to defend herself against anyone, so far. She’s an investigative reporter, recently undercover as a homeless person. Someone has been torturing women leaving scars, facial beatings, cigarette burns, and bloody whippings. None of the women will admit any details because they don’t want to admit they attended a BDSM club as a submissive. Madison’s Aunt Louisa owns the club. Madison plans to go undercover as a submissive so she can catch the torturer. Her aunt arranges for Master D to train her so she can be effective and believable when going to the club. Most of the book consists of the bondage, pain and sex scenes in which Master D is training Madison.
REVIEWER’S OPINION WITH A MINOR SPOILER: This was unpleasant. Two day after reading it, my primary feelings were discomfort and negativity thinking about the pain and torture. The story was lacking. I was not engaged. I wanted the plot to move faster. Most of the book was about the training scenes, and I was bored. My main curiosity was to find out who was torturing women, how they would be caught, and Madison’s role in that. But I had to wait for that part of the story which was at the end, and it wasn’t as interesting as I’d hoped. One of my questions was where were the police? Several women had been brutalized. The police should have sent their own undercover people in, not a magazine sending in a reporter. There was a connection with Rob that was not explained. I wanted a lot more information about his activities before as well as after the torturer was discovered. How the bad guy repeatedly got his victims out of the club should have been shown. It was briefly told – not enough details. There was a relationship developing between Master D and Madison, but I felt no emotional connection. It was sex in uncomfortable scenes, nothing else. The emotions I felt most were unsettling. The sex scenes included bondage, pain, rear door activity, sex in public, sex with two or more men, and torture.
As in most romance stories, the couple has a fight and separates after they’ve fallen in love. In this story the same happens, but I didn’t like the method used. Madison got mad at Master D for irrational reasons, which annoyed me.

I will not rehash the storyline but the mixture of BDSM and "real" world story was great! It was a BDSM book but I did not feel that was all I was getting from this book. Maddison is a wonderfully head strong lady that is apprehensive at first in taking the assignment. Drake knows immediately that having her submissive to him is not only what he needs but it kind scares him a bit as well that not only putting her in a dangerous situation by trying to find a sadistic individual and pushing her limits emotionally and physically may be too much.
In the end (not telling who) The bad guy was really twisted and had a very unhealthy "obsession" with Their focal point. You very seldom see that kind of relationship and as the story progresses you get hints as to how it started....and just how twisted they really are.
The emotional break that Madison goes through is truly heart wrenching. With no one knowing how break it. The level of retreat was well written. Drake's emotional turmoil handling this as well was beautifully written.
This is one of those books that after you read it, it will stick with you for a while. My only complaint is that I can't seem to find a lot by this author and I really want more. Some of the secondary characters I think would make a great book!

It's hard to rate this book. I enjoyed the plot, but i had MAJOR issues with the heroine. Not something that i think would bother others, in fact it may be the reason why many would like her character, but it's one of my pet peeves. The fact that the hero seemed to like or be ok with the way she behaved at times, made me actually think less of him.
I could try and understand that she was not part of the lifestyle and that's why she was disrespectful at times. But when your learning how to be a sub is the key to pass as a sub, shouldn't a she as someone who prides herself, of being able absorb the characters fully then showed an ounce of respect towards the person teaching her? Also goddess save me from heroines with a superwoman complex!
Argh, just rubbed on my skin like sandpaper and i refuse to write a full review on it!LOL I'll say thought that the writing is very good, and the mystery/suspense element was very well done. I suspected a lot of people until i read towards the end, and finally started to clue in.

Ok, so I WANTED to give this 5 stars but I couldn't. I couldn't because Madison irritated the hell out of me. She acted like a bratty little child and didn't know how to relate to me at all! What irritated me more was that she seemed to be rewarded for that kind of behavior.
I LOVED Drake's character. I wanted better for him. Madison did grow on me a little but no until very close to the end.
I thought that the crux of the story was not fleshed out well enough at all. That should have been much more developed. It would had added a lot more to the story.
So, it had some problems, but it hot, it was interesting, and I certainly couldn't stop reading it. So, I give it 4 stars.
So, in all fairness, I bought and read this book because I loved Doreen's blog about what the BDSM world is really like, in comparison to 50 Shades of Grey. And I'm SO glad I did! LOVED IT! It was well written, well edited (my biggest complaint about 50 Shades), it had believable characters. And it was HOT! Oh so hot! Even the things I know I'd never try in a million years were hot! I'm not going to do the spoiler thing, so I'll just say that if you like romantica, and even THINK (if you don't know for sure) that you might like the BDSM theme... you NEED to read this book.
I cheated and looked at the end to find out who the bad guy is. I don't usually do that, but I was having trouble tracking the development of the relationship between Madison and Drake because I was anxious about what Madison would have to go through before the end. So I apologize for being a wimp.
What I liked: Madison, her aunt Louisa, Drake (most of the time), the way Drake introduced Madison to the beauty of submission
What disappointed me: the strange story thread with Madison's cousin Rob, the rushed and awkward ending (why did that have to happen in just a couple of pages?), confusion about 1) how Drake managed his club, his very time consuming relationship with Madison and his VP position at a high circulation publication, and 2) how unbelievable it is that abuse and assault at that level could happen repeatedly at a club without the owner OR the police voluntarily shutting it down. Especially when the owner turns out to be the one person who both loves Madison and is putting her in the most danger. Frankly that last disappointment was so distracting to me, it sort of discredits the whole book.
That said, this is my first Doreen Orsini book, and I will look at her other titles. The whole story captured my interest, and I read it in one day.

Hmmm, I remembered this one to be quite a sexy gem. It still is but the kink stuff is not entirely mine. I do like the chemistry between the two MCs and I get that the dom prepares the heroine for her undercover mission in the BDSM club (which in itself is ludicrous, seeing that she's a complete novice) but I had my problems with the exhibition scenes AND the multiple partners because they clearly crossed a line for the heroine. And herein lies the crux. She's preparing for her undercover mission but because of this they kind of didn't talk about boundaries. C Definitely lost its magic.
