2.5/5. I used to love Shirlee Busbee, but it's been many years since I have read one of her books. She's from the bodice -ripper generation and I started this knowing fully well what might be in store for me. Yes, we were introduced to the hero by way of having having sex with another woman. Yes, the hero did rape the heroine almost immediately after taking her virginity under somewhat coerced circumstances although he did take time to ensure her pleasure. He was immediately disgusted with himself if it's of any consolation. I'm not going to penalise the book for being true to its genre. My issue is the instant love from both after such a trying start to their acquaintance. Although they continued to outwardly spout words of hatred, inwardly they developed inexplicably fondness for one another. i just couldn't see where the feelings came from. There was a lot of lust, but no getting to know each other moment enough to develop warm emotions. In fact, she allowed him to seduce her and fell for him all the while mistakenly thinking he was a married man. There's some angst, a lot of angst, because Busbee does angst and I usually dig angst, but I think being up most of the night reading while trying to overcome my insomnia just wasn't conducive to enjoyment of an already less than perfect book.
Abandonado. Indignante. Ahí cerré el libro.
I am so frustrated by this book. So it starts out a little slow, but not boring by any means. It just takes its time in weaving a tale. Which actually made me excited and hopeful that there wouldn't be insta love and that the author would take a similar approach when dealing with the love story. Also I'm not as used to reading books where the point of view moves around from character to character at any time during the chapters, and normally I don't like that writing style. But this book is well written by a capable author, so I didn't mind it at all. I like both Savannah and Adam right away. Savannah is an independent, seemingly intelligent woman. But the author uses a fine hand to describe her. She doesn't go over the top in describing her character. a lot of authors tend to over emphasize character traits when I'd rather just be shown and this author does a pretty good job of that. I also like how Savannah handles being kidnapped. She isn't annoying about it like some female characters I've read in this type of situation. But then the love interests meet and this book takes a huge nose dive into romance novel cliche city. Maybe it's unfair for me to review this book because I'm a younger generation that despises the old timey "bodice ripper romance". But from how the beginning of the book was written so intelligently, I didn't think the author would use her talents to then turn the book into an over the top, corny, unoriginal, cliche dime a dozen romance. And when I say corny I mean it was so very bad! My eyes started rolling out of my head when the love interests meet and interact for the next few days. And they are both monologuing non stop about how incredible the other is. About How, why, and when his cock reacts, etc. Okay I get it! They want to jump each others bones. Her luscious curves gives Adam a boner every time he looks at savannah. I. GET. IT! So much for me thinking this wouldn't be an insta love book. And it's too bad the author doesn't use the perfect conflict written between the two characters to her advantage. It would have been so easy for this author to go slow with this relationship given each of their preconceived negative notions about eachother. I also started to hate Savannah after they first meet. I didn't think she was going to turn into "that" annoying type female like I mentioned before but she DOES! After they kidnap Adam she immediately goes into attack mode on him, physically harming him as he's laying there defenseless. So now in my mind She basically is sided right up with her captors. She's just as bad as they are. She believes everything they tell her even though she knows what kind of people these criminals are. Liars, cheaters, manipulators, etc. She questions their claims at first, but once they capture Adam, she's totally in cahoots with her captors and turns into the overly dramatic, overly bitchy, overly mean female. And she turns into this just because she takes the word of her criminal captors when they tell her Adam killed her father. A father she actually hates. But now all of the sudden she's attacking this guy Adam because he killed someone she hated? And without even asking why he might have killed him!!? It's annoying. So now I have to take back my belief that Savannah is intelligent. Intelligent people ask questions. They calculate their moves. They don't fly off the handle over any little thing. So it's like this story is 2 different books. The first part that is going along so well, then turns into this ridiculous, unoriginal novel with characters that fit right in to this typical cliche laden novels. ( I only read until page 105 before I had to be done) This could have been an excellent book if Savannah wouldn't have all of the sudden broken character to become the annoying female. And if Adam wouldn't have only been monologuing about his ever growing dick at all times and instead just been upset with his situation and have more brains in his head that are filled instead with plans of escape. Then as the two have to interact more and more, that's when they can start becoming more romantic with eachother. First comes trust, then comes respect then friendship, then love. All the while mixed with sexual tension that's much more subtly woven throughout. Rather than the ridiculous and completely unrealistic "romance" scenes this author wrote where Adam is all over savannah after only 2 days together. It makes him so much less interesting because now he seems like a guy who advances on different women all of the time even if they are willing or not. And I don't like that kind of guy. It's unoriginal and boring. Plus I feel like the two will be at odds with each other for much of the book and that gets tedious for me. This author could do so much better!
I really enjoyed this book. The main characters reminded me of Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'Hara when they were arguing with each other. There was so much passion in these two characters. Best book I've read by Shirlee Busbee so far.
My fourth novel by Busbee, and one i certainly have fallen in love with!
This romantic novel follows Adam who i first got to meet in "Decesive not my heart" and i got to know him a little more in "Gypsy Lady" as the heroines halfbrother,
and now i finally got to read his own story, and for sure i fell for him!Like all of Busbees heros,he is darklooking sexy, violently strong, rich and arrogantly a manwhore. But when he well get to meet the Heroine, after being kidnapped by the men with her, both of them fall in an instant attraction that blossoms to love.
The beautiful Heroine Savanna,is daughter to the villian from "Gypsy Lady" which the Hero Jason Savage in that book ordered his blood-brother the indianwarrior Blood Drinker to kill, after Savannas father Davalos raped his wife and was the cause of his unborn childs death.
So the prospect of knowing that while both Adam and Savanna should have been enemies, they fall in love in midst of all the odds behind them and between them...
I just love this "Lousisiana"-series,the beauty and fire in the heroines hearts, the passionfilled domineering alpha-heros and the storming romance all this series has to give...i love all of it.And this book also made me laugh like hell, haha.Savannas cousin was so funny and i hope he has his own story.
Adams and Savannas love story are truly captivating, funny, hot and so adorably romantic.
I really like historical romance, and this one ticked all the boxes - feisty heroine, handsome hero, sleazy villains, and lots of action. Adam and Savannah lock horns the first time they meet, but don't want to acknowledge how attracted they are to each other. Running in the background of their story is the search for a golden armband from an Aztec treasure, and the villain who wants both the armband and Savannah herself. I found the book a real page turner and would certainly recommend it to other readers.
As I read this I kept getting a sense of deja vu. I may very well have read this book once before long ago. Then again, Shirlee Busbee has a checklist for every novel she writes, so that may also be why I feel I've read this before because in a way I have.
Savanna O'Rourke is easily bamboozled by others into abducting Jason Savage. But what this gang of ne'er-do-wells don't know is they've got the wrong guy. Adam St. Clair goes along with the mistake so he can find out why they're after his half-brother/brother-in-law/second cousin twice removed. Savanna kidnaps and abuses Adam. Adam kidnaps and abuses Savanna. Naturally they are now deeply in love because that's how it works.
Normally I'm a bit worried (i.e. deeply disturbed) when an author writes a couple having an intense romantic moment with a freshly killed human corpse just mere feet away. I will give Busbee some credit for being the only writer I've encountered so far to admit there is something a wee bit off about this scenario.
Nothing mattered to either one of them but that they declare their love for each other, and if it was done with a dead man lying on the ground and alligators hissing and roaring just beyond the firelight, so be it.
The description of the book I am listing below is from the back jacket of the book. I'm adding it because I believe the one on the Goodreads page does not depict this story.

2/5 because I only really enjoyed half this book. It feels like two unrelated stories smashed together. I slowly warmed to the romance between the leads, though a few points here and there made me turn my nose up. The real weakness is much of the first half is taken up by the villains treasure hunt and while even the book admits that without it the leads would never have gotten together, the whole business was a slog for me to get through. In fact it took me so long to finish because I kept putting it aside to read something else. Once it stops and the ‘will they finally acknowledge their feelings’ part of the book starts I got engaged, only to come crashing down again when the treasure stuff comes back in the climax only to be concluded without much fanfare in the last couple of pages. I ended this book feeling quite meh about the whole experience.
I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. Let me just say that I have read many other novels by Shirlee Busbee and consider myself a fan, however this is not one of her best in my opinion. I was able to complete the book and there were some elements, such as colorful, murderous, but sometimes inept villains as well as the scathing but humorous dialogue between the main characters that had me laughing out loud. I do believe the story was somewhat dragging toward the end and it took entirely too long for two supposedly smart and adaptable individuals to realize how well they suited each other. I do not regret reading this novel, but it will not be on my favorites list.
When you start to read this book, you'll never want to leave it. The main characters are strong but with little trust toward each other and a lot of problems. Problems due to a treasure and villains that will do everything to found it. Only trust and love will help them to overcome all the problems they will encounter. A book that I recommend to everyone. I absolutely loved this book. It was entertaining from the first page. The entertainment level simply went up when Adam and Savanna met. What a couple. I enjoyed the arguments they had - and the making up wasn't so bad either. The book was good without depending too much on sex scenes or bad language (there was none that I recall). I'm sure that I've read the authors work before and I will again.
This was a great story intertwined with many twists and turns. The family relationships were fascinating and filled with love and compassion. I would highly recommend it if you love historical romance. Just so you know the love scene are hot. I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review.
DNF UNFORTUNATELY THIS ONE DID NOT DO IT FOR ME. IT WAS A BORING ATTRACTION. I THINK I GOT SO USED TO HOW OFFENSIVE BUSBEE'S BOOKS ARE, THIS ONE WAS JUST TAME.
Of course I believe the usual troupe is there and while Adam is a compelling man, his predicament just didnt seem so interesting to read. So, no thanks.
Savanna and Adam were enemies when they met. Both kidnapped by murdering Micajah. They all thought that Adam was Jason Savage and could lead them to the Aztec treasure. Little did they know that Adam was just as capable of getting himself and the redheaded Savanna out of trouble.
