Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
Susan Edmonstone Ferrier was a Scottish novelist. Her novels, giving vivid accounts of Scottish life and presenting sharp views on women's education, remained popular throughout the 19th century.
Very privileged to get my hands on this copy. It's an 1894 edition of Ferrier's forgotten third novel from behind the library counter, and I was a wreck reading it. The book is really worn and was nearly falling apart in my hands was almost holding my breath at times it's so fragile. Really feel the library should have put it under lock and key. Sort of worth it for the title illustrations alone, they were beautiful to look at.
As for the story itself, well the quality of Ferrier's writing won't allow my to give it two stars, but my god, she does make Dickens seem concise at times. Destiny was Ferrier's last novel and while she seems much more polished a writer in comparison to her first book, a lot of the charm and humour from Marriage is missing - although her observational skill is still there.
Still slightly perplexed how this has fallen through the cracks of time. Have read way worse books that are ever present in the classics section of most bookshops.
