William Holmes McGuffey (September 23, 1800 – May 4, 1873) was an American professor and college president who is best known for writing the McGuffey Readers, one of the nation's first and most widely used series of textbooks. It is estimated that at least 122 million copies of McGuffey Readers were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
Written for teachers/parents who want to use these readers to instruct their students. Ruth Beechick breaks down the 19th century objectives into modern terms. For example, she explains which grade levels these readers best correspond to and for which purpose. Each reader was designed to be read slowly and thoroughly for mastery. Thus, each reader corresponds to 2 to 4 different grade levels. The precise time frame will be different for each student. Beechick also provides lesson plans for each reading selection.
I read this by skimming but very much enjoyed it. It taught me things I've learned through teaching three kids to read. Very thorough description of teaching reading, methods, and rules.
