I just realized I had A Heart So Wild on my Kindle and since I hadn't read it in 25 years why not give it a re-read? And you know what? I loved this book more the second time than the first.
Why?
-Heroine & hero "meet" when the heroine is getting sexually assaulted by an outlaw, and hero shoots the bad guy dead.
-Enigmatic hero with a mysterious and tragic past.
-The heroine needs a gunslinger to guide her through hostile Indian territory to find her missing father.
-Hero fights, beats, kills men who try to kidnap or try to rape heroine.
-A snakebite where the heroine sucks blood out of the hero's wound for an hour (!) and then he gets sick, revealing more in his fever dreams than he would if he was fine.
-Quick love scenes that express passion, aren't too purple in prose and don't go on for endless pages.
I'm so glad I gave this one a reread, as it made me remember why for such a long time Johanna Lindsey was my favorite author: she's easy to read. Sometimes reading is a chore, and it shouldn't be, if it's a hobby I supposedly love.
Courtney is a likable heroine, and Chandos is just... well, he's the kind of hero that made Lindsey sell tens of millions of books.
“You’re my woman, cateyes. You’ve been my woman since I first laid eyes on you.”
That didn’t satisfy her. “Say it!”
He grinned and jerked her down onto his lap, where she sat stiffly, waiting, until at last he said, “I love you. Is that what you want to hear? I love you so much I’ve got no direction without you.”
“Oh, Chandos.” She melted against him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “I love—”
“Uh-uh.” He stopped her. “You better think real carefully before you say anything, cateyes, because if you give me your love, I’m not going to let you take it back. I can’t keep worrying about whether or not I can make you happy. I’ll try my best but there isn’t going to be any changing your mind later. Do you understand what I’m saying? If you’re going to be my woman, there’s no way in hell I’ll ever let you go.”

Why?

Guilty Pleasure #1
His Native American family brutally murdered during an unwarranted attack, Chandos encounters a young woman staying with the man known to be one of the murderers. Her life in his hands, he nevertheless sets her free, intuitively sensing her innocence. Four years later and he’s still hunting down the rest of the men involved that day- and Courtney Hart once again has managed to cross his path. However she has no idea the history they have together and though he wants nothing of her, she’s determined to hire him to take her to Waco where her long thought dead father appeares to be alive and well, if the picture in the paper was to be believed.
Since she’s too stubborn to take his advice- ie go home and get that fool idea out of her head- he agrees. Along the way she moves from being his burden (someone has to take care of the headstrong greenhorn), to his tormentor (the skin tight pants she inadvertently buys), his lover, to his greatest weakness. Meanwhile he must stay on the bloody path he had set for himself- avenge the slaughter of his mother and half sister.

She hated living with her selfish step mother, so when it seemed her father was alive and living in another state- the opposite of what she had been told- Courtney Harte jumps at the only chance to go discover the truth for herself. Even if it means riding along with the enigmatic Chandos- a man she just met.
Even though he tries to frighten her off her mission, she still trusts him beyond all reason. Besides, he is beautiful after all, and she can't take her eyes off him.
Despite looking otherwise the entire time, she discovers he’s not as uninterested as he appears. When he finally releases the full force of his passion, it frightens her- but his confession that he wanted her too simply undoes her.
With much of her timid nature behind her, they give into the wild heat between them, but a wild heart is not easily tamed and Chandos knows more than anyone that loving means loss.
When they reach their destination, he leaves, intending to never come back. In despair, Courtney tries to move on, as does he, only to find that is all but impossible. Especially when the ties forged on the trail refuse to let go- of either of them.
I love the old western romances that have the hero and heroine riding the open trail across the west, with only each other to survive and A Heart So Wild is probably my most favorite. I re-read it often and every time it’s just as passionate, just as engaging. For some reason, I’m always amazed at the delicious feeling in the pit of my stomach I get when Chandos gets all possessively protective of her. I’m amazed- not because it happens, but because it happens with a story I know like the back of my hand- and one I’ve been reading over and over since my teenage years. That’s how much a woman likes to feel protected- even one who knows she can pretty much survive anything after all she's been through. Well, this woman anyway. Written in the 80's, trust me when I tell ya, it still has the magic.
Now that I think on it, perhaps A Heart So Wild is my favorite romance novel, period. If you know my reading habits, that’s saying something.

Tras el desastre que fue La novia cautiva, de esta misma autora, para mí, no imaginé que esta novela me iba a hacer pasar un buen rato, conociendo a esta pareja que el destino, podríamos llamarlo así, mantiene unida en todas las circunstancia. Ha resultado ser entretenida, animada, con algunos diálogos interesantes y una visión de la "guerra" entre indios y vaqueros que amenizaba la historia de amor entre los dos. De hecho esperaba una historia mucho más viejuna y ha sido una buena lectura; he encontrado sentimientos, acción, trama, historia y, en resumen, ha estado muy bien.

Un clasico del oeste inolvidable!
A Heart so Wild/ Corazón indómito de Johanna Lindsey serie Straton 1
Mí humilde opinión:
Courtney Harte está segura de que su padre, presuntamente muerto durante un enfrentamiento con los comanches, aún vive, perdido en algún lugar del territorio indio. Necesitará alguien que le ayude a atravesar esas tierras salvajes...
Él se llama Chandos, y es un avezado guía. Alto y moreno, sus ojos son de un extraño color azul, y en el fondo de ellos arde un oscuro secreto.
Una historia de aventuras, pasión, intrigas y sobre la familia en el salvaje oeste situada en 1868.
Estoy haciendo una relectura de esta serie, hace muchos años que la leí pero mí opinión sobre ella no ha cambiado.
Me trae nostalgia leer los libros de JL, siendo fan desde hace tiempo y un libro tan viejo como este que no me canso de leer y volver a leer.
Esta es una lectura rápida, lo leí en una noche pero es una historia muy dramática. Intensa. No tiene el romance habitual ya que plantea temas como los prejuicios raciales y la injusticia y la crueldad de las personas. Es bastante violento también.
El ambiente es oscuro, con tensión y acción mientras Chandos y Courtney viajan juntos por territorio indio.
Chandos es un personaje sufrido, silencioso, dividido entre dos mundos ya que es un hombre blanco criado entre indios y siente que no pertenece. Este es un personaje duro y difícil de ver cómo héroe.
A pesar de esa primera impresión, Chandos sí logra ser un héroe diferente, me gustó que fuera íntegro, que trate como igual a Courtney, no se vuelve dominante con ella o agresivo. Esto tiene que ver con el hecho de que ya la conocía, lo que hace que tengan y se sienta una conexión especial entre ellos.
Entendía a Chandos, sus acciones y motivación a pesar de lo brusco que lo sentí por momentos.
Courtney estuvo bien, aunque sus luchas por sus sentimientos me volvieron loca, no fue una protagonista molesta como en otros libros de Lindsey. Ella era hermosa por fuera y por dentro, me gustó su evolución de tímida a valiente.
Hay mucha química entre Chandos y Courtney, la transición de la lujuria al amor es bastante creíble. Disfruté de su interacción y desarrollo de su romance y todo lo que sucede desde que se juntan lo que los hace al final una pareja memorable.
Este es un muy buen libro, un clásico de esos que vuelves a leer con gran placer.

Llevaba mucho tiempo detrás de este libro, y gracias a las librerías de segunda mano he podido encontrarlo (Aunque la portada es lo más feo que puedes echarte a la vista xD).
La historia de Chandos y Courtney es tierna y muy divertida, pese a que la pasa de todo a la pobre chica y Chandos es borde como él solo. Y pese a que me ha gustado y me lo he terminado prácticamente en dos días, esperaba un poco más viendo la nota tan alta que tiene en Goodreads.

Our heroine is a hardworking woman, who was once rescued by a savage Indian. Years later, working in servitude with her uncaring stepmother, she suddenly finds out her father is alive and somewhere deep in the Indian territory. Terrified to travel alone, she approaches our hero, an enigmatic gunslinger to accompany her. He is reluctant, and does his best to scare her, but soon agrees to be her protector and companion.
The book is them travelling through rough lands, realizing who is the actual savage vs who are out for revenge, having WILD smoking sex, falling in love and healing their scars.. both physical and emotional.
I enjoyed this book but it should come with trigger warnings! So much assault and rape in this one.. my heart truly broke for all those Indian women and almost for the heroine. The hero was kind and protective, the heroine fierce and caring. I really enjoyed their romance and this book.

Hace muchos años que no leía libros de este estilo, en más de una ocasión he puesto los ojos en blanco con su lectura, pero teniendo en cuenta que salvo algunos autores específicos no leo romance, bastante es que lo haya terminado, opino como las demás para pasar el rato, en poco tiempo ni me voy a acordar de él.
Lo más reseñable del libro es Courtney, su protagonista, que comienza siendo una damisela en apuros y va cambiando hasta convertirse en una mujer valiente.

This reads as a proper old historical romance. Which read more true to life of the time it was set in.
Enjoyable story and a page turner. I have always liked J L books. And this was a 4.5 stars for me.

Tenía este libro por casa desde hace un montón y nunca le había dado una oportunidad. Ahora lo he hecho y no me arrepiento. Me ha gustado bastante la historia y la relación entre Chandos y Courtney. Quizá el final sea algo precipitado, pero en general es una lectura muy entretenida.

I remember reading a book by Johanna Lindsey a very long time back. And though I don't actively pursue each and every book that she writes, nevertheless I remember Ms. Lindsey to have the ability to spin a good historical romance with enough passion between the characters to stir up one's insides. A Heart So Wild is a romance that gets recommended quite often on Amazon discussion forums and I finally decided to find out what makes this book of the American-Westeran genre a favorite of so many romance readers.
A Heart So Wild tells the tale of Courtney Harte, the only child of Dr. Edward Harte, who grows up insecure of the love of her father since the death of her mother at the tender age of six. When her father remarries for practical purposes to a woman who changes her colors overnight, Courtney withdraws more into herself than ever before, learning to hide how she feels deep inside. When Courtney survives an attack by the Indians, her life takes a turn for the worse with the disappearance of her father, leaving her solely dependent on her stepmother until she can make it out on her own.
Chandos is a man who is hellbent on getting revenge on those who had violated and killed the people closest to him. The past 4 years has all been about chasing leads and finding each and every single one of the men who had abused their power in the worst way possible and to make them pay for what they had done.
When Courtney finds evidence that her father might be alive, she doesn't hesitate in trying to acquire the services of the strong and silent gunslinger who makes her feel all funny on the insides, something that has never happened to Courtney before. Chandos would rather cut of his arm and feed it to the bears than let Courtney tag along on a journey that is ridden with hardship and danger, not to mention the number she does on his libido and other emotions just by existing. Chandos hides a secret that binds them together from 4 years back, a secret that could turn the adoration in the eyes of the woman who means more to him than he can admit into hatred and anger.
As both Chandos and Courtney travel the rough and tough journey towards their individual destinations, the desire that simmers between them escalates until it obliterates everything else and demands nothing less but their complete surrender. But Chandos is not a man who would give up his quest for revenge lightly and he would rather not subject Courtney to the wanderlust nature his life had taken form of for the last couple of years. Laced with humor, witty bantering and enough bad guys to keep the action going, A Heart So Wild is a romance that hits all the right spots and delivers quite well on all fronts.
I loved Courtney as a heroine whose sense of humor makes even the most tension wrought moments in the book seem less so. Chandos is indeed a swoon worthy hero whose way of calling Courtney "Cateyes" and "Kitten" certainly had me going totally weak at my knees. And I absolutely loved the way Courtney continued to give as good as she got from Chandos, though she loves him to the point of distraction, never letting Chandos walk all over her and her feelings for him. All in all, a quite well rounded tale that had me clamoring for more of Chandos and the brand of magic that only he and Courtney together seems to be able to make.

A great example of why Lindsey is such an amazing Historical romance author....her heroes are typical of the bodice rippers, but not quite as brutal. Her romance takes center stage but the secondary plot is engaging as well. It's a wild trek through a wild land. A somewhat innocent heroine, a savage and untamed Indian. He's a chest beater, she's got a stubborn streak and is on a mission. Great choice!

Esta autora me gusta muchísimo porque sabe como meterme de lleno en la historia, por muy sencilla que sea. En este caso está ambientada en el oeste y aunque cae en tópicos con los protagonistas, Johanna le da ese puntito personal que los hace diferente a todos. Además no creo que los tópicos sean negativos, en este caso quería una historia que me enganchara al instante y me evadiera y lo ha conseguido totalmente.
Si no habéis leído nada de la autora este es un buen libro para comenzar, para viajar al caluroso oeste de mano de dos personajes que os garantizo que os regalará un bonito y tierno romance.7

Love the book...Love the hero and heroin....satu lagi pahlawan yang seru dan seksi...Chandos a.k.a Kane Stranton
Diawali dengan kejadian sadis, yang mengingatkan saya pada kasus yg saya tangani sendiri pada tahun 1993 di Bandung, dimana terjadi pembunuhan terhadap satu keluarga dan perkosaan dan pembunuhan terhadap gadis kecil usia 9 tahun ! Dan saya yg harus meng-otopsi si gadis kecil. [image error]

Enggan namun merasa sangat terikat dengan gadis yg selama 4 tahun ada dalam pikirannya itu, Chandos membawa Courtney dengannya .. apalagi setelah mendengar Courtney tetap akan oergi walau harus bersama Reed Taylor , org terkaya di kota kecil itu walau terpaksa harus menikahinya.
Dalam perjalanan yg melelahkan itu Cortney merasakan ketertarikan terhadap Chandos yg makin meningkat,juga Chandos terhadap Courtney yg di tahannya.

This is the first of two novels about the Stratton family in 19th century Texas. At that time, Texas was a rough place bringing together gunmen, cowboys, ranchers and Indians. Many who had lived through the destruction of the Civil War looked to the West for a better life. Courtney Harte's father, a doctor and a Southerner (who ended up on the North's side), was one of them. Now disillusioned, he decides to move to Texas. On the way there, in Kansas, they are attacked by Comanches seeking vengeance for a massacre of their people that occurred years before. Courtney's life is spared by a blue-eyed Indian. Thinking her father dead, she stays on to live in Kansas until one day she sees a newspaper photo from Texas and her father is in the background. Courtney decides to hire a gunman to take her to Texas. She chooses Chandos, a ruthless gunslinger.
There are many themes in this romance that Lindsey presents well. First there is the bias against Indians and the way they were treated (though Lindsey recognizes cruelty on both sides). Then there is the fact the West held many dangers, especially for young, beautiful unmarried women. Courtney grows up as she faces danger and rises to various challenges with great courage. Lastly there is the tension that comes from a strong-willed father and an equally strong son, a rebel caught between two worlds.
The dialog is very believable and presents a man of few words and a woman of many. I enjoyed their interaction and the chemistry between them was exceptional. I have since read the sequel, ALL I NEED IS YOU, and it's not as good. I have read others by Lindsey (and gave 5 stars to HEARTS AFLAME AND SAVAGE THUNDER).

Wow, una de mis primeras novelas de romance histórico, y después me preguntan de donde viene mi obsesión con lo western, solo miren a Chandos, mamita querida, que muchacho *-*
Sí, han pasado muchos años desde que lo leí, pero who cares, ¿y qué si no me pareció tan romántico como la primera vez? ¿Y qué si Courtney me había parecido más listilla y menos orientada al lado dramático y chillón de la vida? ¿y qué con que se amen con tanta pasión y yo no vea de qué o donde salió tanta cursileria?
A mí me gusta. Es lo primero que leí de Lindsey y es un libro precioso en lo que a mí respecta.
Anduve de compras el otro día y me traje esta joya de una tienda de libros usados, las manoseadas que tienen son indescriptibles, pero tiene historia, y es exacta a cómo me la encontré la primera vez.
Te sigo queriendo Chandos, aún todo bruto, torpe y rudo, te sigo queriendo.

This is one of my all time favorite romance novel. I have read this book at least eight times. I love tortured heroes and Chandos is certainly one. He is strong, compelling and his journey for revenge appealed to everything in me. I love Courtney as well and how they came together..the chemistry..their banters...everything about them still lives with me today.

No soy mucho de novelas de vaqueros e indios per me ha gustado mucho. No me importaría tener un acompañante como Chandos en una aventura así.
Lo que no he llevado tan bien, es la cantidad de personajes que aparecen, que lío con tantos nombres.

No me esperaba ese comienzo pero no ha estado mal, es una historia entretenida y se lee rápido.
Me ha gustado bastante el protagonista, Chandos y ella no esta mal, para todo lo que ha pasado en el viaje, pensé que saldría corriendo al primer imprevisto. Y todo lo que surge entre ellos dos, me ha gustado.
Hay momentos por los que ella pasa, que era una bocaza y no se callaba, ya ha llegado a un punto que me ha hecho hasta gracia.
Seguramente más adelante leeré el otro libro

El principio se me hizo lento, pero en cuanto Courtney cumple 18 años y aparece Chandos fue leer y no parar.
Aunque el prota es demasiado rudo para mi gusto, me ha gustado... sobre todo cuando llegan a Wako
Estoy segura que si esta novela la hubiera leido con 20 años hubiera sido de mis favoritas jajajaj como se cambia con la edad

One of Ms. Lindsey's better reads. I can't really put my finger on why I loved it. I just did. It has the alpha, protective hero and the "helpless" heroine. Not that helpless is good. It's not, really, but she was a city girl out of her element so I forgive her.

Hace mucho que no leía nada de Johanna Lindsey pero cuando terminé esta lectura recordé por qué fue la autora que terminó por conquistarme para que sea una loca de los libros.
Es cierto que con los años fui cambiando en c
uanto a los géneros literarios que me gustan y me hice mucho más frecuente a la fantasía pero eso no quita que Johanna sigue siendo una de las grandes autoras que tuve la oportunidad de leer y que, pese a que tiene algunos libros muy flojillos, hay otros que son 🙌🥰❤
No suelo hacer comentarios muy largos pero supongo que estoy un poco nostálgica de saber que no tendremos más libros nuevos de esta escritora 🥺
Por cierto, tenía un poco de miedo respecto a leer este libro que tanto me había gustado hace varios años porque no sabía si me iba a decepcionar pero al final terminé por devorarlo en 4 horas 😁 Me duró una madrugada jajaja.
Amé a Chandos desde la primera vez que lo leí y me gusta mucho la evolución que tiene la protagonista femenina a lo largo de la historia. Mi único problema ha sido el padre de ella....

This was very violent. Not the ballrooms kind of historical romance, but one of pure violence in the middle of the USA where locals were afraid of Indians and the horrible things they did to one another.

Wow - what a story! This is truly one of those 'old school' romances we all grew up with and love so well! It had alot of action, adventure and was quite gritty in some parts. You don't see that much with all the Regency romances around. Made for a nice change.
The heroine was an innocent at the beginning, though pretty smart and logical, but by book end she was really able to stand on her own two feet and express just how she felt about everything.
The hero was damaged, one of those angst kinda guys. Very chilly and cold in the beginning, but warmed up - eventually - in the presence of the heroine. And though he wasn't all ponies and rainbows at the end, cause lets face it, he did murder some people in a most horrible way, he was able to move on from his revenge feelings and you felt that he would make a good life from here on in with the heroine and would make up the relationships he had previously discarded.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, it was a bit gritty for a romance road trip, but I really enjoyed it and there wasn't a dandy in sight, which made for a nice change. I'm glad I picked it up as it was quite an escape read :)

I wanted to love this because of the serious subject matter, but just ended up liking it. In a welcome change, A Heart So Wild was darker in tone than the typical Johanna Lindsey romance. This change also added credibility to the setting, the Wild West. As much as I sympathized with Chandos' quest, I found it difficult to connect with him because he was a bit too mysterious and brooding. I did like how protective he was of Courtney, who was a spunky and strong-willed heroine. The chemistry and passion between them was electric and evident, even as they became embroiled in plenty of action.

Way too bodice-rippery for my taste. Characters were flat. A thoroughly grunting/possessive hero and a ridiculously immature heroine. Can't even give a two-star for courtesy. I stopped reading in earnest at about 60% through and skimmed the rest.
