Franziska! We finally get Franziska in the Courtroom! A lot of cleverness and fun in the writing of this series

Picked this up on a whim from a bookstore in Little Tokyo (they didn't have volumes 1 and 2). I've been watching the anime which is making me nostalgic for the game, and this book did a good job of scratching that itch.

Maya drags Phoenix to a weird ring of fortune tellers on the top floor of the Lordly Tailor mall to get her fortune told by a teller that supposedly is 100% accurate - because she gets her info by communing with the Lord of Death through a portal to hell! But when the teller is stabbed with her demonic scythe during her consultation with the client before Maya, things go sideways. The teller and the client were the only people in there and the doors were locked from the inside. The client has to be the murderer...right?

Lots of laughs and your usual Phoenix Wright weirdness, and kind of a Junji Ito vibe for some of it, yeah? That was unexpected. It was nice to see Phoenix and his boyfriend Miles Edgeworth getting ice cream cones at the park in the last bit. ;) The creepy ice cream salesman sees you guys.

I'd definitely read more of the series if I can find them.

I feel like Ace Attorney has defined what it means for something to be a locked room/costume/etc. They employ that trope often but it works for me!

There's just one case in this volume, and it's completed by the last page. It's a pretty interesting mystery involving psychics. There's a neat little reference to the Apollo Justice game (Phoenix a pianist? Never!) that I really liked. Also, Franziska prosecutes the case, and Edgeworth shows up kind of randomly in a scene at the end. I loved it. It still feels like the game plays, except that there's less exploration of the crime scene and clue-gathering.

This volume is unique among the Phoenix Wright manga releases in that it consists entirely of a single story from beginning to end, Turnabout Prophecy. Right away, that makes it more attractive as a standalone piece of entertainment, with no need to seek out a second volume just to get the full setup. It's especially nice when you consider how rare and expensive these things are nowadays, with some folks charging upwards of a hundred bucks for a single volume! Unfortunately, in a reversal from Turnabout Gallows, my opinion of this one has sunk a bit in the last decade and change.

Don't get me wrong, it still has a lot going for it. The central concept of our client du jour receiving an ominous fortune about being "POSSESSED BY THE LORD OF DEATH", and said fortune seemingly coming true in horrifying locked-room-murder fashion, is quite solid. And I enjoy the setting of the Fortune Teller's Circle itself ... even if it's actually more of a hexagon. In theory, this should make for a fun lineup of eccentric suspects. However, Kenji Kuroda undermines this by making it virtually impossible for all but one of them to have committed the crime, and then having them destroy evidence in front of multiple witnesses, just to make sure they look maximally guilty. And the trick behind the victim's "100% accurate" fortunes, while certainly creative, also replies on one too many contrived coincidences for my taste. Could this setup really work even once, let alone fool customers day in and day out? I doubt it! That being said, I liked the clue that leads Phoenix to piece it all together; ending on such a strong note definitely helps it all go down more smoothly.

I also had some issues with how Franziska von Karma was portrayed here, specifically how she's filling in as "Madame Lovetap" at a place called Thong Fortunes. (That's "thong" as in the flexible part of a whip; she isn't actually wearing a thong. That we can see.) It seems like the general Goodreads consensus is that this reveal is hilarious, but I was just uncomfortable. I'm sorry I don't find it funny that this teenage girl took over a dominatrix-coded job because "one of Papa's friends begged [her] to"! And the less said about the bonus comic where she steps on the horny manga artist, the better....

A very predictable case but to be honest that's not really why I read these! I love the Ace Attorney mangas so much because they perfectly encapsulate the style of the games with the weird humour and wacky characters. I adore Franziska von Karma and I was so excited to see her in this volume calling Phoenix out on his 'foolishly foolish' ways. As always the art style was brilliant and I got unreasonably excited about the little references to Apollo Justice. One of my favourite things is the translation notes in this volume where it went through the English names for all of the characters and the reasons behind them. I found that so interesting and it shows just how much consideration and effort went into making these mangas.

Really fun! I think this was my favorite setting so far in the Manga. The fortune teller circle made for some very entertaining and whacky witnesses. Also the reveal that Franziska was there too cracked me up.

The reveal of how the murder was done was pretty satisfying + we basically got Phoenix and Edgeworth on a date in the end, which makes me incredibly happy. Sure, you could argue that they just went on a friendly stroll around the lake, but in my head it was a date and I am sure the ice cream fortune teller agrees with me ("This is a surprise. You are bond by a strong thick bond...")

I also loved all the cameos in the last two pages. I need more content of these characters <3

Moderately fun book version of the game but nothing to write home about. This 3rd has the same problem of the first two in that it’s not the same genre as the game when it’s not set up in a way that can be figured out and is just a story rather than a game.

There was part of this one that was pretty clever and fun so marked it as 3/5 instead of 2/5

Makes more sense to play the game instead. They need a bit of the encyclopedia brown treatment to be more interactive and intended to be figured out, rather than a story that relies on unmentioned information to make sense of the mystery.

Regardless of this series being about an attorney defending claimants from being accused of murder I am glad to inform you that it is not overly graphic and has thus been classified as Teen by the people at Kodansha Comics. Also I think it would be good to mention regardless of the serious nature of the crimes committed in this book that it is not an overly serious series being based on the spoofy Phoenix Wright Videogames. If you decide to read it I hope you enjoy. :)

Either Phoenix and Maya have a natural skill to sense when death is about to come, somehow their presence causes others to want to murder subconsciously, or the town they live in is filled with psychos as Phoenix and Maya find themselves in the middle of another murder mystery. Visiting a department store in the middle of a typhoon the duo are there to visit the fortune tellers when occult fan Russi Clover gets a prediction that the Lord of Death will possess her and bring about great calamity. Soon there is a murder and supposedly Russi is the only one that seemed to be able to commit the crime. Be sure to read this book to find out how Phoenix will save the day this time. :)

This book covers the entirety of the "Turnabout Prophesy" trial so if you want a good one shot to try the Phoenix Wright Mangas then this would be a fine example as opposed to the first two volumes which were split up among one smaller trial each and a larger one between them. I for one have always liked the games and these books are a fantastic addition to fond memories of those games as far as I can tell ya.

My favorite part of the book is Francheska who makes fun of Phoenix in the court after he tries to claim no finger prints were on the weapon but as stated before no one could think how anyone else could have made it into the room. "In Fact, I think you may have foolishly upgraded your foolishness! I knew you were a fool, but now that I see your foolish foolishness again , I remember just how foolish a fool you really are." she says wagging her finger at him as her smile turned to smug glee.

The case was interesting, but there still seems to be some character issues. Von Karma more or less was acting as if Phoenix were Edgeworth (there is a definite difference in her attitude towards Miles than Phoenix). I like the allusion to the "Piano Player" bit...but will say I still do not understand why the game franchise decided to limit their options by having Phoenix lose his "attorney status". Lastly, I never really imagined Edgeworth as the "let's hang out type", let alone allowing Phoenix to pay for his ice cream, the dots here at the little finishing story don't quite connect, though it is a sweet gesture in painting a friendship.

Another exciting mystery! The entire book is only one case: murder of a fortune-teller. Plenty of creepy elements and a few "red herrings" thrown about as usual

The only buggy thing is the editing on a couple pages. The original Japanese writing was left behind, and the English text was carelessly slapped right over it.

I love these books and they are similar and as clever as the games (certainly something to read while your waiting for the next Ace Attorney game) The characters are all written just as they would be in the games and the art work is beautiful. This book is one case with a little funny something at the end.
