Eden saved Az. She went up against pure evil and won.
But at what cost?
With loyal friends suffering, and her chance at a future with Az disintegrating, new enemies are the last threat Eden needs. Especially with the Fallen after revenge. But when mortal paths start breaking apart, Eden knows the game has changed and all of humanity is now at stake.
Kristen stayed out of the battle. She gave Eden the headstart she needed to save Az, and faced Gabriel’s wrath when he found out. All because she couldn’t chance her own secrets being exposed. Now, without intervention from Gabriel, madness slowly claims Kristen’s mind. When desperation forces Kristen to consider a path she swore she’d put behind her, her only hope rests with a temptation too wicked to resist a second time. Because the only one who can save her sanity may cost her soul.
Be swept into the dark and haunting sequel to A Touch Mortal, a paranormal romance Publisher’s Weekly called “cryptic” and reviewers referred to as “smart and sexy” with an ending that leaves readers “dying for more!”

Earlier this year A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford wormed its way into my brain, and my heart, securing its place as one of my favourite books of the year. Desperate for more I waited impatiently until an ARC showed up for me last week. I just finished it, and, may I just say, it's perfect. Beautiful and perfect, and haunting.
This series, as it is, is one of my favourite things this year. Wow. It's very hard to talk about what happens in book two as much of what does happens is spoilers. Let's just say this - the usual suspects are all in chaos. Eden and Az are circling each other like orbiting stars, unable to kiss but trapped helplessly in each other's gravity. Eden also has developed a mysterious illness that she is trying to keep hidden from Az. Meanwhile, Gabe is struggling with his new found Fallen status and Kristen is losing herself to her schizophrenia without him. And, above all, there is the Bound and they are searching for the Siders.
These books are so beautifully drawn, so pristinely plotted. I don't think people fully appreciate what Clifford has done with these books. I'm not sure if Clifford herself is quite aware, but there is a lasting, non-derivative quality about them; an irresistible abrasiveness. I have spoken about this with friends and readers in the book community and I will say it in a nanosecond - Clifford has truly written something that will not only impact but will stand out from this entire genre. It's original, it's dauntingly sad, it's unsettling. And gorgeous. A friend of mine said recently that she felt Clifford was the J.D. Salinger of the YA field, someone who will stand out years down the road. I'm going for something more Gothic, crossed with a Humanist twist...Thomas Hardy. The books are nothing at all like each other, but the characters...the characters all experience such profound life changing sadness that evokes the human condition in ways that remind me of Hardy. Totally different genre, same Humanistic feel. Read the scene in Tess of the D'Urbervilles where Tess has to bury Sorrow and you'll begin to grasp my comparison.
Besides that, there's an overt preternatural unease to Clifford's books, a creepiness and restiveness that seeps in and troubles the spirit. Like horror movies with small starey children, or random inexplicable sounds in the night. It's the kind of book that unnerves you and you cannot pinpoint why. There's something alluringly unsettling about these books. The only YA author I can begin to compare them to is Francesca Lia Block, and that's about as close as comparing them to Thomas Hardy. At least Block's books have supernatural elements to them.
I seriously cannot wait until book three comes out. Any thoughts or guess to the title? A Touch Mor-something. Mortifying? Morose? Mordant? We could play the word game all day.
A Touch Morbid nets a solid 5 out of 5 from this excited fangrrl. And I will reread both of them when book three comes out.
Everything is in chaos. Everything is falling apart. And everyone is in even more danger than they were before the events that got them to this point.
Luke wants revenge and those who acted against him will have to pay for what they did.
Kristen is coming apart at the seams. With no one she feels she can trust, turning to Luke for help seems like her only option.
Eden is suffering in silence, keeping secrets from Az that could be devastating to them both.
Az and Gabe are battling their own demons. Fighting to keep it together when they could so easily come undone.
And with the Bound beginning to take an interest in the Siders, hiding and trusting no one seems like the best option.
But in order to find the answers they need and to stop Luke from exacting his revenge, they will have to put their trust in the most unlikely source. Madeline.
And if she can’t be trusted, the end result could be catastrophic and all could be lost.
***
A Touch Morbid is a twisty-turny sequel that will leave readers guessing right up to the end about how all the pieces fit together and just who can be trusted. The pace is blazing fast and readers will be immediately ensnared by this deliciously dark, torturous and heartbreaking story.
Each and every one of the characters is still reeling from the events that took place at the end of the first book in the series. And while some of them are still in the dark about just what happened, others are trying to fix what went wrong.
With everyone keeping secrets, it’s impossible to know who’s trustworthy and whose side they’re on. But new alliances must be forged in order to find the answers needed to save those already lost and to prevent anyone else from meeting a similar fate…or worse.
Once again author Leah Clifford has written a tension-filled and incredibly exciting story that is full of surprises and that will leave readers on edge as each new question arises about where things are headed and who will survive this deadly battle between the Bound, the Fallen and the Siders.
This is no warm and fuzzy story. The characters may be charming but could never be called sweet. They are edgy and dangerous and sexy and wicked and each one of them contains a touch of darkness within. And while some seek to do what’s right, others simply seek revenge.
While some questions will be answered, readers will be left with many more at the story’s end. And just as with the first book in the series, the sense of dread will continue to grow about the likelihood of a happy ending for any of these characters.
A Touch Morbid is a must read for fans of something a bit darker, edgier and sexier and who aren’t afraid of an unhappily-ever-after ending. This sequel once again will leave readers on the edge of a cliff, puzzling over just what awaits these characters in the next book in the series.
(On the blog I gave this my six-star rating)
On a personal note:
What an unbelievably awesome and insane follow-up to A Touch Mortal this was. I expected to love this book, but I didn’t think I could love it as much as I did the first book in the series which had the thrill factor of something brand new. But this sequel had so much going for it that it felt just as exciting and tormenting and deliciously wicked as book one.
I was instantly transported back into this world of the Siders. The story picked up shortly after that jaw-droppingly shocking ending that left me tormented these past nine months until I got my hands on an early copy of A Touch Morbid.
I totally devoured every word and plan to do so again and again before this book is released. And I know in my haste to find out where the author would leave things on page 299 I must have missed a few subtle and not-so-subtle clues as to how things managed to end up as they did.
I have definitely been cryptic with my review, but much of this story is based upon just what happened at the end of book one, and I don’t do spoilers. So while I won’t talk about the plot because it is one giant spoiler, I will say that I loved the multiple points-of-view in this book and I was so incredibly thrilled at just how much Luke there was in this sequel.
I love Az and Eden and Gabe and Kristen, but Luke has always been and always will be my absolute favorite. He is definitely evil, but he is also incredibly smart, clever, powerful, sexy and oh so unbelievably dangerous. And he just had the best lines. Whether sarcastic or sexy or downright cruel, Luke knows how to make every line work to his advantage. And make me absolutely adore the evil that is him.
Leah Clifford is also incredibly fiendish. I knew I could expect to be tortured by the ending in this book, but I didn’t really know just how tortured I would be. She is the evil mastermind controlling the fates of all her characters and it doesn’t seem as if any of them will come out of this unscathed. If they manage to come out of this at all.
And oh how I absolutely loved how interconnected all the characters’ seemingly unrelated stories actually were. And just how everything came together at the very end…much to my dismay.
I had a growing sense of dread as the story progressed and more and more was revealed about just how wrong things really were. It was this sense of wrongness that kept me tense and worried for the characters and made me want to scream at them so that they’d discover some of the things that I already knew to be true.
Where the first book left me feeling like I was hanging off the edge of a roof, this entire book made me feel that way, right up to that cliffhanger ending.
And holy hell what a freaking awesome and terrible ending, especially after being tormented throughout. To have things end the way they did. Again. Is so unbelievably cruel.
I have spent hours – longer than it took me to read the book – trying to find any possible scenario that would lead to something remotely considered a happy ending to the series and I just can’t.
Every single possibility leads to heartbreak. Devastation. Despair.
And I couldn’t be happier. Okay, maybe I could. Just a little bit. If the story kept going or the next book in the series were to find its way into my hands right now. Then I’d be happy… or even more tormented. I guess that’s TBD.
After reading A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford, I couldn’t wait for A Touch Morbid. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an ARC that I whipped through in one day. Leah is an author who can weave the dark-side beautifully with all the chills and wiggens while still maintaining a sense of hope and wonder.
I adored the characters in A Touch Morbid! Even bad boy Luke a.k.a Lucifer has a side to him that is ultra-appealing despite the fact that he is, indeed, the devil. He’s the dude we all love to hate, even when he’s wearing skin tight leather pants literally oozing sexuality while crooning to a crowd. Deep down inside, I really wanted to hate him yet there was still a part of me that went “Hubba, hubba! You big hunka' burnin’ love you…..!” That’s the beauty of Leah’s dynamic descriptives, I saw so much of the characters both inside and out that I had a clear image of who they were in my mind.
Eden has really toughened up, almost to the point where she seems a bit too hard at times. Good thing I was able to see her inner dialogue which revealed all of her fears and her sense of responsibilities to her makeshift family. She often makes what I would call dumb decisions but her heart was always in the right place, that could have easily been handled if she would’ve put a little more faith into Az and Gabe-their communication was stilted, to say the least and with all three of them ready to throw themselves under a bus for the other, that’s not a good thing.
Az is fighting constantly not to ‘fall’, he wants more than anything to just have a life with Eden- peacefully- without the constant threats hanging over their heads. Az is truly in love with Eden but there is an angel who will stop at nothing to see Az fail and the reason why is astonishing. I will give this little tidbit-it has nothing to do with Luke or Az, for that matter!
Gabe! Oh, how I heart me some Gabe! He’s one of the most fantastic characters ever written! He is generous, compassionate, kind and just-GOOD! But…there is a dark side to Gabe that will be revealed in A Touch Morbid that will shock every fan of this series. It was so shocking to me that I had to set the book down for a bit just to process what I had just read. There are some huge surprises in store when it comes to Gabe. The secondary characters are just as well described and they play an active role in the outcome of A Touch Morbid.
The plot is unbelievably fascinating as in ‘the edge of your seat and blow your mind’ category! So much going on, who to trust, who is friend and who is foe? There’s changes occurring to Eden that are frightening and nobody seems to have any answers, there are rogue siders that are using their touch much like a drug dealer and the bound are becoming more interested as each day goes by.
A Touch Morbid is one of the best books I’ve read in 2012. It has a fantastic plot, characters that I know and love plus the addition of some new characters that are just as wonderful, a beautiful and true soul-mate romance along with danger, thrills and chills and suspense that is edgy enough to make me bite my nails to the quick! I couldn’t recommend this series enough! This is a One-Sit-Read, the highest honor this reviewer can give!
On a more personal note: This review is purposefully spoiler free, as all my reviews are but I won’t even ‘re-hash’ the book because to do so will give away vital bits of information therefore ruining it for the reader. This is one book that should be read with an open and free mind without any hints of what exactly to expect.
THE FAERY SAYS THIS BOOK ROCKED MY WINGS!
Thank you to ATWT and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review
Quick & Dirty: About a hundred pages shorter than A Touch Mortal, this sequel is a cliff-hanger with the same drawbacks as book one — but it does leave you excited for the final installment.
Opening Sentence: When the kitten broke out of the shadows in front of Gabe, he’d though it was a rat until he heard the pathetic mewling.
The Review:
Clifford takes a standard paranormal theme — Angels — and makes sure to run as far away from the stereotype as she can. Which is refreshing, but sometimes she missteps and makes you long to defenestrate this sequel. Eden, our heroine, goes through a lot in this novel and grows as a character. I still didn’t like her until the very end. (This happened in A Touch Mortal too, where I couldn’t get over her idiocy until the last 50 pages.) A Touch Mortal glamorized suicide and depression. A Touch Morbid didn’t do much better, condemning the suicide victims to hell. Even the ones that Eden killed with her Touch. You could say I’m not a happy camper with the way Clifford’s world-building holds up.
Gabe has fallen. Az is….almost falling. Kristen’s schizophrenia is back, and he’s not around to help her. Luke is bent on revenge and Madeline tugs at your heartstrings with her flavor of crazy. Jarrod is loyal to the end (I love him!) and Eden has stopped killing Siders. The cast of characters is way too big. I wish Clifford had made Madeline and Luke the main heroine/hero, because I loved to hate them (and loved to love them) and their relationship. I was much more invested in them than in anything Eden and Az did.
As it is we see a shift in the group dynamics. Jarrod points out all the changes in Eden the reader fails to notice from her point of view. Luke turns out not to be such a bad guy, which makes our gang of heroes seem really self-serving, and I liked him a lot. There are a lot more hot scenes in this novel, and it grows darker as the characters develop and grow.
Free will and choice come into play much more in A Touch Morbid than in the first book, but it felt like Clifford was rooting for Fate. It felt like every time a character had a choice, they either screwed up or made the bad call. The characters keep secrets from each other, just like in A Touch Mortal, and they never learned. Her writing is excellent, with some snarky wit that made me laugh and lighten the mood, but it wasn’t enough to make me like the novel. And the cliffhanger at the end? Lord, is that a rough way to leave an audience!
This book felt more balanced than its prequel in a lot of ways — probably because we got out of Eden and Az’s heads more and into characters I actually liked — but the problems from the first book persist. (And will probably continue throughout the series.) I just can’t bring myself to like or recommend a novel where suicide is whatever. On the other hand, this novel doesn’t make me go ragey – rage the way the first one does, so that’s something. I doubt I’ll be picking up A Touch Menacing, even though I think it’ll deliver the heartbreak and angst I love in my YAs.
Notable Scene:
“Eden, what the fuck is going on?” Jarrod demanded.
She trembled, Az’s tremors running through her. “The Bound,” she managed.
Jarrod’s mouth dropped open. They’d been a threat, but a nightmare one. Distant. “You saw them? Is he hurt?”
Az’s legs went out. He slammed his hands over his ears, his fingers digging into the sides of his head as he dropped to his knees, rolled over onto his side.
“No, Az!” Eden dropped, grabbed Az’s fingers and pried them away. “He’s Falling.”
FTC Advisory: Greenwillow Books/Harper Collins provided me with a copy of A Touch Morbid. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
LOVE!The great thing about A Touch Morbid is it actually does what a sequel should. It continues the story line while developing the characters and giving the reader new insight into the MC’s mind and the mind of the other characters that you have loved in the first book. An added PoV for one of Eden’s gang was added and learning more about that boy and his own internal struggles made me love the book even more.
Same bat problems, same bat channel but with twisty bits. Everything we thought we knew about Eden, Gabe, Az and Luke is torn to shreds and dare I say that Morbid was even more, well… morbid and dark that A Touch Mortal? My heart ached for everyone, I wanted them all to succeed. New information leads to new betrayals and Eden has way too much on her plate with keeping Az from falling sans Gabe to link everything together.
What I really loved the best about this book was the new information on Luke and on Kristen. Clifford found a way to make you feel sympathy for even the most vile evil badasses in her cannon. We also learn a lot about the third gang of Siders and who they work for, also what their motivations are.
A Touch Morbid is a fantastic sequel and I can’t wait to read the continuation of Eden and her ragtag group of miscreants.
From the green highlights in the girl's hair, to her popping purple lips, I think this cover is amazing, and definitely an eye catcher; purely amazing!
My Thoughts:
Come to think of it, I've really been into reading about angels! It's probably just another one of my many, phases I go through. First Unearthly, who's review will be up soon, and now A Touch Morbid.
This book wasn't originally on my TBR for April, but when I received it in the mail from Me, My Shelf and I, for one of her book tours I knew I needed to read it, and review ASAP. If you don't know who she is, you really NEED to check out her blog right now, she does a ton of awesome things, and a lot of different and fun book tours!
A Touch Morbid is the second book in the A Touch Trilogy, so I'll try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible....sometimes I just get way to excited, jump up and down, and just want to tell you guys about every amazing part, that had my jaw dropped, touching the floor. It's a very bad habit...
A Touch Morbid, had my attention in it's tight grasp within just the first few pages. It took me from my bed in my boring old room (on a school, or weekend night, I'm not doing anything important) into a whole different world. It had me wishing that I could magically grow my own angel wings!
While Kristen is going crazy without Gabe, and not knowing what to do or whither or not to believe Luke, Eden wants to save Gabe and keep everyone together, Jarrod wants to help a human girl who is addicted to Touch, and Az just wants to make Eden happy, and to do so, he makes a huge sacrifice.
These characters each have something going on, so there's a lot to keep up with when reading A Touch Morbid, but after reading a few chapters you start to get the swing of things and you won't be as confused. But I feel that Leah Clifford did a really good job, reintroducing all of the characters and the situation.
If you haven't picked up this book, or A Touch Mortal, you really should! I'm not sure when the third and final book is hitting the shelves, but I'll make sure to get it, as soon as it does. Leah Clifford has an amazing way with her words, she makes them flow so easily, which makes me want to keep reading more. GO CHECK OUT THIS BOOK, NOW!
OK I really did want to love this second book in the series more than the first one. I was about 175-200 pages in and just was not connecting with the characters or the story or possibly both. Maybe it was not the right time for me to pick this book up yet. I hardly will say I blame my age when I read YA books, because YA is 95% of what I read. I do think maybe this time around I might be to old for this series, not sure. I'm trying to dissect why I didn't connect. Individually I like Eden's character and Az also. I did understand more of Leah's world building and who and what characters are, but since I read A Touch Mortal back in April of last year, I think I forgot quite a bit about the story and that had me confused at times again reading A Touch Morbid. I can tell you I LOVE the covers for this series. Something about the simple girl on cover with punk hair is a WIN WIN for me. So basically did I dislike the book that would be a NO but was I lost YES.
A Touch Morbid starts with Eden and Az are finally together and Gabriel is in hiding. Everyone is keeping life changing secrets of course from one another. Eden will have to decide if she will continue to trust in Kristen and work with her or possibly start to work with Madeleine. Will pacts break? Questions will be answered but guess what? New questions will arise also. Be prepared for some hot scenes and some foul language but if you read A Touch Mortal then you know what to await in this installment. Also be prepared for that mighty cliff hanger, it a doozey!!!
A Touch Morbid is as dark and sexy as A Touch Mortal promised it to be. Eden gets a new look with green replacing the pink highlight and her new pixie-ish haircut, and Az is back in her life. However, they have both suffered heavy losses in their face-off against Luke. They need each other more than ever now in these uncertain times.
One big difference from book one is that there aren't time skips. The second is that Jarrod and Kristen have become narrators as well. Jarrod's relationship with a mortal brings another important character into the story while Kristen's narrative opens us to another side of a key character. Jarrod's perspective becomes crucial in pointing out changes in Eden that we wouldn't pay attention to otherwise, and it allows us to see the changing dynamics in the group's functions with Adam and Libby out of the picture.
As I mentioned earlier, there is more dark and sexy in this book. Leah further develops character relationships. Prepare yourself for hot scenes, sweet scenes, and some surprising reveals. I found myself falling in love and/or sympathizing with characters that I wanted to hate, and I fell deeper in love with characters that I liked from book one.
Eden forms new alliances, and she faces old friends in new lights. As Eden learns more about Siders, she faces new, dangerous threats that may potentially bring about her downfall. I eagerly anticipate book three in Leah Clifford A Touch trilogy!
-She lost herself, for one last moment, in his eyes. And then 'she' stepped back.-
Thank you so much dear Rachel and Leah for bringing me back to the world of reviews T_T I haven't written even an excuse of a review for 3 weeks now. It's really showing. So today, I'll leave you with my thoughts, or what's left of them, about the book.
THE BOOK Oh My Clouds in the heavens of the whole earth that we humans inhabit O_o Where did my heart go? Oh, yeah. Leah completely stole it with this second instalment of A Touch Mortal. After reading the mind blowing, incredibly new, and fresh first book I really didn't think that life could get any better than that. And as it's always with me. It turned out I was completely and utterly WRONG. A Touch Morbid was 100*100000 times + infinite more times better than ATM1. -Takes her hat off- Leah! for this attempt to share with you and everyone else what you did to me with this book actually work I'll have to pretend that you are NOT from this world and that you've come from some other dimension where all books are perfect and the person who writes them is not evil but...let's just say -wicked- and that the person doesn't have a normal brain but one that can only come up with mind-blowing-death-sentence ideas with it and nothing else.
-This was about false promises of things he couldn't have.-
EVERYTHING AND MORE Let's just start with the kitten shall we? Because everyone loved to tease and torture me about the poor/lucky kitten whenever Leah had a chat. I do believe in kittens and...Boy, what would I give to be the kitten in this story...even if just for a while...to be able to be that close to G...HIM...it's got to be worth something. There's someone dealing with TOUCH...out of all things to get um...some kind of profit from...that's got to be ugly! Everyone thinks they're doing their best to help everyone else. Everyone thinks that is best to keep something from someone for their on well being and the rest. But this whole book was so wicked and so twisted and so good...I can only agree. The lies that were told or the truths that weren't told in the book were all done or undone lol, with the best thoughts and interests in mind, not wanting to harm others but the contrary.
-"I want to see beautiful things with you."-
-Az and Eden, I envy. Every time, every way, every second, forever. Az comes back broken but still full of love for Eden. -Eden is at her most strong point...and later at her most vulnerable and weak. Protecting those who don't want to be protected but knowing better...must stink. -Gabe...~sighs~ Gabe is mine, end of discussion. He's struggling after the killer ending of ATM1. He's trying, he has/had/maybe/will/have some kind of kitten. He's hot. No. I mean it. Literally. HOT. And then, he's dark, he's darker, and at some point I think he went completely BLACK. -Kristen, I think I've come to like Kristen more than I would like to. Simply because she spent almost every single of her scenes with evil incarnate AND made me jealous of it. How far off gone was I by then? I think I completely lost it. She played with ICE...and I don't think she was afraid to freeze...she was almost always cold in the book. Showing her soft-still-human side.
-"Do you know how easy it would be to break you?" She looked numb. "I'm already broken. You fix me."-
-Luke. Taking a deep breath here. I cannot believe that Leah put books&Luke in the same sentence or paragraph inside this book. I mean it. If Luke buys books why shouldn't everyone? If he likes a certain kind of breakfast meal why shouldn't we all? I know I'm loving it/them now. He can be so deliciously manipulative while at the same time freeze someone from the inside-out without a seconds hesitation. After all, he learns from his mistakes. -Jarrod. OMG! ~grabs Leah and hugs her fiercely~ There was so much more of Jarrod I thought and felt it was Christmas all over again! He's my forever hero. The only one that really tried to be the light in all the shadows that were this book. He IS afraid of things but unlike all the others he doesn't try to hide it but fights against it with all his might. And for that I LOVE HIM and I'm marrying him. End of rant. -Madeline is an elusive little thing and she's completely scary in the most crazy way. I have really no words to describe her. -Zach and Sebastian are 2 yummy things that if they continue like this...I shall also take them home with me and never return them. -We have old characters coming back...maybe just one but who's counting? And new ones...that I have to say were the excellent spice to this plate of a heart attack-Don't think I've forgotten how I started out this review.-
-"My little black hole," he said, leaning his head nearer to her. "Pulling me in."-
MY POOR SOUL The story was explosive in it's glory and mysterious in it's worst and I loved every single dot, letter, exclamation point, quotation mark, and EVERYTHING in it. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect sequel. Things aren't getting any better...they're getting worse by the minute. Every character has it's own story to tell and solve. Every corner is dripping secrets. Every song can drag you to hell. Every angel can be upon you. Every word can condemn you. Every kiss is a promise. Every promise is a lie. Every intent is good. Every good can rapidly turn into evil. Every breath can kill you. And. Every Touch can claim you. Death is lurking everywhere. Life is trying to run away. Love is trying it's best to prevail but so far it seems really hard and almost impossible to believe Love can hold on much longer. A Touch Morbid is a heart-accelerating thing of a book. I don't recommend this book for those who suffer any kind of heart disease as I can assure you...this will be the death of you as it was of me.
-"I love you," he whispered.-
My body-heart-soul is begging for the third book. And as Rachel told me. I don't know if reading this book early...has gifted me or has cursed me. I'm ruined for all men because I just met the one I want in this book. Do please please please yourself with this exquisite sequel. And buy it when it comes out. Your mind knows you want it...just let your body go along with it.
I give this book; 10special-fotitos(special rating for over-the-top-I'll-never-get-over-this book) = I cried for things I didn't know possible I was capable of.
Once again I have to thank Rachel @Fiktshun for this wonderful gift. Thanks for killing me at a young age!
I feel bad for giving this such a low rating because I hardly ever give books anything lower than 2 stars, but this book also made me want to DNF the series and I always try to finish a series. Sometimes the next book is better! Ok, not always, sadly not even often, but it happens just enough to give me hope to push on. I'm not getting much hope outta this one.
Maybe I'll pick up the last book in a little bit. Idk, I'll see how I'm feeling.
Eden was boring and hatable, Az was bland, Gabe felt like he was made of cardboard... everyone was just an archetype! And the amount of Capitalized Nouns for the same few things. Bound. Up/Downstairs. Up/Down There. Touch (wtf even is touch? Why does it build up in Siders? What even are Siders???). Ugh.
This review was posted to Amethyst Daydreams Blog on July 8, 2012.
I was lucky enough to get a signed copy of A Touch Morbid, the sequel to last year's A Touch Mortal, at BEA this year. I really enjoyed A Touch Mortal and I love that Leah Clifford lives very close to where I grew up. Here's the Goodreads blurb:
Eden won the battle-she saved her true love from the darkest evil. But the war has only just begun. With secrets swirling around her, powerful allies unraveling, and life-and death-as she knows it eroding, Eden and those she loves tread dangerous ground. Can she trust anyone? Will her unearthly powers be her salvation or her downfall? A sweeping, dark, and sexy paranormal romance that will haunt readers with an inventive mythology and a cinematic New York City filled with shadows and longing. I really loved A Touch Mortal because it was a really unique story that had something that is pretty run of the mill: Angels. There's nothing expected or tame about Leah Clifford's world. She's created a dark, gritty world within the one that we all know so well. She's incorporated angels in a way that no one else has and it's just lovely. I enjoy the characters so much but I really felt that while we got to know Jarrod better in Morbid, we got far less Eden and that maybe the changing viewpoints in this one kept us from getting close to the characters and pulled into their stories. I really don't know if that is what did it but I felt that this one was more like watching a movie than being pulled along with the characters, which is how Mortal felt to me. I liked hearing more from Jarrod and getting to see more of Kristen. I really don't like Kristen at all after Morbid. I feel like I should feel sorry for her and I do, but I also feel like she's a user and not a leader. Her group of Siders would be better off with Eden or Sebastian in charge of them. Kristen's kinda evil. She sees them all for what they can do for her or give her and not what she owes them. Kristen's just not right and she really needs to not be around others. Period. Gabe just shredded my heart in Morbid. He really did. He was also the one on the last page that had me gasping and throwing the book down, angry that there wasn't more. Jarrod ... what to say about Jarrod. He is just as sweet and loyal as the day is long. Reading his viewpoint is a treat. All in all, there was something about this one that made it hard for me to get as excited while reading as I did for Mortal but that being said, I'm waiting impatiently for A Touch Menacing to come out early in 2013.
You can find out more about Leah Clifford and the A Touch Trilogy by checking out her website and blog. You can also find her on Twitter and Facebook. Clicking these words will take you to A Touch Trilogy on Goodreads. Clicking here will take you to A Touch Morbid on Goodreads. You really should check out Leah and her books because she's a seriously fun person. A Touch Morbid earns 3 Fairies because while I did enjoy it, it just didn't grab me the way that A Touch Mortal did... until the very last page. I'm still so excited for A Touch Menacing!
It is rare that I like a second book in a trilogy more than the first, but Leah Clifford raised the stakes in A Touch Morbid and I was absolutely captivated. Once I started, I simply could not put it down, and I read straight through in just over 2 hours. What is big and awesome in A Touch Mortal only gets better in this installment of the characters' story.
I love the characters. The characters of this trilogy are so unique, and they all are very different from one another. Eden was one character that really grew on me in this book. She was a good character in A Touch Mortal, but I definitely felt she grew a lot and was a character I genuinely liked with this book. I super loved Gabe in this one, he was already a great character, but oh my gosh, his character was just marvelous in this one. Despite the fact I think I'm supposed to hate Luke, I found myself falling hard for him in this one. Kristen is one of the best written characters I've read in a long time.
Leah Clifford doesn't leave a single dull moment. The entire book is fast paced and action packed. Everything that goes down is simply fascinating, and I loved every moment of it. While there is never a slow moment, Leah Clifford still manages to have this perfect pacing; nothing is ever too much or too little. Michael was an interesting guy. I felt like he was a complete creeper, but every scene with him in it were some of the most intense in the books. They were the ones where I was flipped pages at a crazy speed. In addition to everything else going down, there were also lots of sexy times in A Touch Morbid, which I wholeheartedly approved of.
A lot of questions are answered, yet Leah Clifford raises about a dozen more in the process. The plot just kept layering deeper and deeper, and I am so intrigued to see where it goes in the last installment. The whole idea of the Siders is so intriguing by itself, but when you add in all the other details of the story line, it is just brilliant.
Your emotions will be in shambles by the end of this book. You also never know who to trust, Leah Clifford plays with your emotions to make you think so and so is behind something, then flips the switch and then you suspect someone else. It is absolute torture. In addition to that, just everything that happens is completely emotionally draining. I was happy, then clueless, then worried about this character or that character, all paired with these absolutely heart-wrenching moments.
My one complaint? That is was not longer, as I know I have to wait out the long months before book 3 is out. The ending was an absolute killer! Everything builds and builds to this crazy peak and Leah Clifford just leaves readers hanging.
This series is one of those must reads. I loved book 1 and book gets bigger and better. Basically I think all of this could be summed up with the statement of I hate Leah Clifford for being a genius. She's a genius this series is just SO good and that makes the wait between books so agonizing. There is no other way to put it, but that A Touch Morbid was simply brilliant.
When I read the first book, A Touch Mortal, last year; I fell in love. It was one of my top favorite books last year. It's taken me a while to finally grab a copy of this at the library, and I'm so mad for it! Though I didn't love A Touch Morbid as much as the first book, I still really liked it and I am still absolutely in love with this series.
The writing is amazing and flows extremely well and when I did have the time to read, I flew through the pages. I hate how long it took me to finish this because of not having time! If I could have, I would of sat there and finished the book in one sitting.
So much happens through this book and you learn more about how everything works in Eden's world and some of it is scary, but so intriguing! This series is so unique and I love it! I don't want to give anything away and spoil anything, so I won't go into too much detail.
Eden has grown a lot since the first book, but you can tell she's fighting something. She's having problems in this book and being really secretive about it. I was worried about it through the whole book, I was curious as to what it was, but still had a good idea of what it could be.
The point-of-views change between Eden, Gabe, Jarrod and Kristen, which I LOVED! I loved getting more in sync with Jarrod and also getting into Kristen's head. You get to learn a lot more about the character's and I was happy for that because though Kristen is really weird and a bit insane, I love her. Sometimes she aggravates the crap out of me where I just want to shake her and slap her, but she's one of my favorite characters. She's written extremely well!
There's a new character that pops up and she really bugged me at first, but I finally started being able to tolerate her and I'm REALLY curious as to how she's going to be in the third book because of what happens in the end!
And gah Luke. I hate him, but then I like him with Kristen. Is that bad?! He's so evil, but when he's around Kristen you get this kind of sweet and caring side of him. You can tell he really loves Kristen. But gah he's so EVIL!
And Gabe was one of my favorite characters in the first book, and I'm sad that you don't get to see TOO much of him in this book, but he is fighting something (Which you most likely know what if you've read the first book.). I really liked how he was fighting something, but still kind of was himself through parts of it. He fought it REALLY hard.
Which leads me to the ending of the book. WOW! I am just....wow. Leah really knows how to screw up your emotions. I cried through some of this because there was a part that was just heart-wrenching! I'm not going to say what, but just know that this will happen when you read this!
Overall, this was REALLY good. I'm sad that I didn't like it AS much as the first book, though very close, but I wasn't disappointed. I knew I wouldn't be! I can't wait to see all the amazing and epic things that will be happening in A Touch Menacing!
Leah Clifford awed readers with her fresh and original idea in her debut, A Touch Mortal. Her awesome storyline is back for another ride in A Touch Morbid. Gabe is now Fallen, and everyone needs his good-guy personality back. Az is about to Fall without his best friend there to save him from it. Eden is terribly sick, but unsure why since she cannot die (or can she?). Kristin makes a new alliance that turns into an unexpected romance that she is not ready for. Gabe needs to come back from the dark side and save the day, but is he too far gone?
Clifford knows how to get the point across. As much as I should have read A Touch Mortal right before reading this (the last time I read the first one was last year), I understood exactly what happened without needing to. I was caught up to speed in a matter of pages and even without a lot of recap on Clifford’s part. She knows how to keep the plot flowing. She is also awesome, which is shown through her writing, as well as the interview I had done with her last year that you can read HERE.
The cover: they changed her hair. If you remember the first one (pictured), it has Eden on the front cover with purple hair, but in this novel, (SPOILER) she changes it to green. I loved how the cover changed with her hair. I wonder if she is going to change it yet again to match the color of the third novel.
A Touch Morbid was not as good as the first one. But most sequels aren’t. It’s a rarity that the second novel will be better than the first, let alone be as good as it. Still, the plot was fantastic! I will let you take a moment and read the first sentence (written below). Did you read it? Having the first scene of the novel with Gabe and a kitten, knowing that Gabe has Fallen (that knowledge was known at the end of the last book) was pure genius. I was getting squeamish just thinking about that poor kitten. Leah Clifford sets up these images, morbid images, in your head that you can’t free yourself from. It works and I love it!
A Touch Morbid is filled with a few new characters and readers get to know some of the older characters better. Sullivan is the new girl in town. I couldn’t help but see her as a replacement of Libby and how a new character needed to fill the void of Jarrod’s girlfriend. I didn’t really like her that much either, where Libby was filled with energy in A Touch Mortal, Sullivan was only bubbly when she was high. I loved, however, seeing Luke in a new light. In the first book, he was just the bad guy, but getting to know him better was exactly what readers needed.
The ending just ended. I was caught up in the story and I turn the page and there is nothing left. It couldn’t be but it is true. The story just stops. I look forward to the third one, hoping (since it is a trilogy) that it ends much better than this one. A Touch Morbid is a breathtaking sequel that will captivate you with its original and heart stopping plotline.
I was extremely excited when I got a chance to read this ARC. I was then disappointed when I went back and read my review of A Touch Mortal. I remembered it quite well, but apparently not the things that irked me. My review is less positive than I’d remembered. Apparently Clifford wrote a story that was memorable enough for me to forget much of what I didn’t like. I chose not to let my anticipation be killed by that, and excitedly dove in. I started reading.
And kept reading.
And kept reading.
And, no, not all in one sitting. I expected it to be a 1-sitting read, but it wasn’t. It actually was quite slow. Not much going on for most of the book – at least nothing all that exciting. We know who Luke really is, so we know – even if Kristen doesn’t – that he cannot be trusted. So, while the details were quite surprising – and even somewhat brilliant – the betrayal in and of itself is not. I mean, c’mon! HE’S LUCIFER! You know – SATAN!
Anyway, my biggest complaint: The summary makes it sound like this book is also about Eden (like the first book). It’s not. I wanted more of her – her and Az. They almost seemed secondary characters – as did Gabriel.
For much of the story, there was a lot of nothing going on. Sure, we meet new characters. Some things happen, but the pace is so slow. And I got FRUSTRATED with these people. Everyone promises to tell everyone everything, but no one actually does it. And when one is found out, they are pissed at the other – despite their own secrets. Ugh! None of the last quarter of the book would have happened if these people COMMUNICATED with each other. But, that was the best part of the book – the part I found myself reacting to – so I guess it’s not altogether bad that these people (and I guess angels) are are so horribly flawed …
Now that the bad is off my chest, I did feel the last quarter-ish was fantabulous. There were unexpected twists and turns, and I really enjoyed the surprises. Unfortunately, they didn’t buoy the story. On the bright side, this is not as dark as A Touch Mortal was – although these people and angles have foul mouths.
Overall, this was a huge disappointment. But, it ended in a way that makes me determined to read the final story. I just want to know what happens. How things play out. What exactly is going on. Hopefully the last book will have all of the answers!
Eden won the battle, but the war is just beginning and everything is coming apart. She's suffering, keeping it a secret from Az. Kristen's mind is crumbling, and she doesn't know who to trust. Gabe and Az are battling their own demons. And the Siders have attracted the interest of the Bound.
So much of this book is life and death, love, purpose, choices. It goes up and down, touches angels and devils and the Siders in between. There's darkness and destruction. No one knows what's true and what's a lie. There's loving and wanting and craving. Things are falling apart, and everyone is at risk. There are so many twists and turns that it's hard to know who to trust, what to believe.
I felt something when reading this, but I was never sure what it was until the end. It was because I never knew where everything was going until the end, that I never knew who to trust and what the consequences were. This book was dark and twisted, always exploring the shadow-drenched side of life and death and choices.
A Touch Morbid is more multiple stories all woven together than another book all about Eden. There's Eden and Az and what's happening to the both of them. There's Gabe, who's lost and confused, his memories spotty at best. There's Kristen, lost without Gabe to anchor her, slowly losing her mind and her strength until she turns to Luke. There's Jarrod and a newcomer, and their connection is dangerous. Plus there's Madeline with her own motives different from the others, she has plans of her own but doesn't always see the need to share.
Then there's the Bound, the angels, and their interest in the Siders. There's Eden, unsure of whether or not hers go Upstairs or Downstairs.
It's difficult to talk about this book without spoiling any of it, but I will say that the reader puts a lot of trust in the author for most of it. You have to believe that Leah Clifford will bring everything together, that it's all connected when it doesn't look it, and that the ending will leave you breathless.
Honestly, the ending leaves you hanging off the edge of a roof. Metaphorically, of course. The despiration to find out what happens next is so great. And the title is so true. The first book was a touch mortal, and this, a touch morbid.
A Touch Morbid was fast-paced filled with tons of surprises. We get more knowledge about Siders, the Bound, and the Fallen. Also, we find out what happens when Eden doesn’t kill Siders. It's only bad things. And want to know what else? A lot of sacrifices. You grow on a character and then they disappear. It's hurts. It really hurts. Why, Leah, why?!
Proceed with caution. There are spoilers. If you haven’t read A Touch Mortal, then don’t continue. However, if you are curious like most are, then by all means, read on.
A Touch Morbid continues on where A Touch Mortal has left off. Eden, Az, and Jarrod are searching for Gabe through-out the city. At the end of A Touch Mortal, Gabe confessed his sins and has Fallen. He is in a dark place now and fighting the urge to kill humans. Luke isn’t too happy about this. Usually when a Bound has Fallen, they control the urge and become monstrous. Gabe, however, is making it through but he is slowly failing.
Eden is desperate to find him. So desperate, she seeks help from Madeline. Madeline is another Sider that rules over other Siders. Eden is hasty to trust her, but Az is getting close to falling and needs Gabe. Madeline will only help Eden if Eden takes a Sider known as Vaughn. Vaughn is a Sider who is giving the Touch out to humans for a price. The humans are using it as drug. Madeline wants him finished because she doesn’t want the Bound to take notice on the Siders.
Eden doesn’t want to kill anymore Siders, after finding out what happens when Siders die. Eden is becoming very sick, and something is hurting her. I was really worried about her throughout the book.
In this book, you get more character point of views. You get Eden’s, Gabe's, Kristen’s, and Jarrod’s. Gabe is fighting the urge to kill things, Kristen is slowly losing it without Gabe’s help, and Jarrod has found another girl to help. I really like knowing these new characters point of views, and have really grown liking all the characters from the story. And the ending!! Ah!! What a bad and good ending mixed together! Some bad things happen but one good thing did happen. Can't wait for the third book!
If you like darker paranormal stories, than this one is for you. Or if you like angel books, I highly suggest this one.
A Touch Morbid continues were the first book ends pretty much. This book is hard to review without spoilers so if you haven't read the first book do so. Eden has her love Az at her side but it has come at a price. They can not kiss but they can't stay away either. Gabe seems to be lost to everyone and they all want to know where is with a few people questioning what happened to him. Kristen especially needs to find Gabe. Eden seems to be getting ill and tries to hide it from Az. Now on top of that the Bound know and are hunting for the Sliders. Everyones world is falling apart and they may just have to work together to make things right.
Eden gets even better in this book. She wants to do everything she can to make things right and to live a normal life as she can so to speak. You get to see her thoughts so you can see how much she truly cares for Az and Gabe among others. She does do some stupid things but she has the best of intentions doing them. Az he fights every day to stay with Eden and learn her secrets. He feels guilty and he truly wants to protect Eden anyway he can. Love him. Gabe all I can say is we get to see a whole lot from him that I truly didn't see coming. Luke even knowing I shouldn't I liked him more in this book. Yes he has his own plans he wants to use people to get accomplished but you also see a different side of him. Kristen I know this girl has problems but I can not seem to like her.
I love the first book and this book did not let me down. It had plenty of twist and shocks that I did not see coming. You have angels, sliders, fallen and even Lucifer his self so you know it has tons going on. Everyone seems to have secrets that they are hiding from each other. Some of those secrets are to protect someone some of those are to hurt people. I stayed up very late to read this book and was glad I had the next one to jump right into. This is a series that will pull you right in and keep you addicted to it just like some people are to touch. The author continues to build the characters in this book and expand the world you got to see in the first book. I would recommend to everyone.
Not Recommended[return][return]Gabe, Az and Eden are back for the follow up book to A Touch Mortal. The book jumps right into continuing the story from the first book, so the story and characters are not introduced again. Readers will be lost if they have not read the first book. Eden is still coming to terms with being a Sider. She can suck the soul/life out of humans. People become Siders when they commit suicide. However, the story is playing out that Eden had help committing suicide and that maybe she should not have been a Sider. There are elements of Angels, the Devil, schizophrenia, and runaways, but it is all very confusing and was not clear to me where the story was heading. Towards the end of the story, Kirsten was on her way to giving Luke her soul in exchange for him helping her deal with mental issues and so she would not be lonely. The story ended with the death of another character and readers are left with a cliff hanger. Is the character who just died going to be a Sider?[return][return]I just felt like there were too many characters and story lines going on that I didn’t really understand where the story was going. I could see that it was supposed to be dark and there were elements of angels vs. the devil, but I almost gave up reading it. It had been a few months since I read the first book (which I did enjoy), but I should have reread it to understand the story development. However, I did not love the first book enough to reread it. As an avid reader, I normally do not have to reread books in a series to remember who the characters were and what was going on in the story.[return][return]Besides buying this for a school or public library collection, I don’t really have any ideas as to where else this book could be used. The cover art is great and would tempt students into picking it up. I would actually not even recommend buying this book for the school library unless you have the first one AND a student requests it. I would agree with the Kirkus review that states it’s “chaotic”.
Update: Originally read Jan 5-11, 2012- Reread Feb 1-4 2013 in anticipation of reading the final installment A Touch Menacing. Worth the reread! I love these characters so much! I'm so excited to dig into the last book and I'm so scared of where Leah Clifford is going to take it!
A Touch Morbid was one of my most anticipated books of 2012. I have been looking forward to it ever since I read the devastating cliffhanger to A Touch Mortal. I was not disappointed. Leah Clifford has woven a twisted, crazy world that sucked me in and didn't let me out. I love how the traditional angel/demon tale is made into something so new and totally unique.
I adore each character, even the bad guys! Eden is strong and bad-ass, yet still vulnerable and conflicted. Az, oh Az, he is the sexy sexy boyfriend that any girl would want. Their date scene literally had me swooning! Gabe is the ultimate sacrificer. Luke, well, he's Lucifer, so of course he's the eternal bad boy, but he is oh so steamy and drool-worthy. Kristen is still her twisted self, though she is going through quite a hard time. I love her and her twisted mind! My favorite character of all has to be the damaged good guy, Jarrod! He is just so protective, and sweet, and cute!
A Touch Mortal is dark, edgy, exciting and emotionally-charged! I was never sure what was going to happen next, or why characters were making the decisions they were, and when it all came together, I was blown away! Left with another crazy ending (but thank-goodness not as bad as last time!) I can not wait for the final installment in this series to see what is in store for us next! If you like your YA a little dark and twisty I recommend this series for you!
