Pub owner Sam and detective Jared have been together long enough to know each other through and through, so when the usually wordy Jared sends a clipped text message to Sam saying he’ll be late, Sam knows something’s wrong. If Jared is in a foul mood and wrapped up in a case that’s gone to court, he’ll be insufferable for who knows how long! Without some serious unwinding, their upcoming anniversary celebration might be ruined, so Sam plans something completely different for the a foray that will take their lovemaking farther than ever before. With some luck and a little gentle coaxing, Jared should be unwound in no time.

This story is well written and I liked the central thread of 'trust' that went through it. There wasn't a lot of character background other than the barely necessary minimum. What I missed was an emotional connection to either of the characters. Sam, who tells the story, isn't really the type show emotions externally, but I would have thought he does have more feelings than he lets on. He talks about loving Jared, in his head, but I didn't 'feel' him. For me, knowing just a little more about them, or finding out how Jared experienced this scene, would have made all the difference. Still, what happens between the characters stands on its own.
If you like stories with 'the macho, quiet' types who don't even think about being emotional, yet are clearly in love, you will probably like this story.
Treat this as warning as well ... as the idea of "unwind" that Sam has in mind for his partner, Jared, is a session of love-making (with Jared being the bottom, which is a rare ocassion) and ... fisting. So those who don't like that kind of scene (and I know there are), might want to rethink. I like it enough; even the story is a bit uneven since Jared practically doesn't say anything at all (and everything about him comes from Sam's description)

This sweet and kinky short is essentially one long sex scene, with set-up, between bar owner Sam and his long-time lover, cop Jared. It’s their 5th anniversary coming and Sam knows Jared is in a mood due to work which will likely spill over and ruin their weekend, so he takes a deep breath and he decides to try something new to pull Jared out of his funk, before he can really get into it.
The whole story is told from Sam’s perspective, so you really don’t know much about Jared, except what Sam shares with us. Jared has issues bottoming, they love each other, they are both hard-headed manly men at times, and that’s about it. Sam decides to try a little power-play game to get Jared out of his head, and to his surprise, it works quite well and Jared doesn’t resist, even though it’s not their style.
I really liked Sam. He only wanted what was best for his man. He didn’t want the foul mood he knew Jared was in, to ruin their plans for both of them. He respected Jared though and wouldn’t push him if he really didn’t want something. Their long-term relationship was evident, he knew what Jared needed to allow him to bottom without much stress, that kind of things that only a couple together for a few years would get.
So while Jared’s not a big fan of bottoming, Sam wants to take it to a whole new level. Fisting. Yep, first for both. Jared agrees and they take it slow and it’s more about Jared getting over those old messages and trusting that Sam would never hurt him or do anything against his will, than the kink factor. Just as a note, this is the first time I’ve ever seen a glove used in a fisting scene. It was well done and not made a big deal of, just a quick sentence or two.
If you’re in the mood for a steamy, and yet romantic, short story, this is a good choice. I would have liked to know a bit more about their relationship outside of this one little scene, but there is a touch of playful humour and definitely a sense of love and caring, that is threaded all through what could have been, a cold and kinky short.
