Chicago businessman and bachelor Devon Pierce doesn't want to be appointed guardian of Australian four-year-old Ryan Caldwell - but Ryan's solicitor, Stella Walker, won't take no for an answer. Little does Devon know that this "minor" adjustment will grant him a future he never expected to have. Told in a fast-paced, poignant, and witty style, Minor Adjustments will take you on a journey filled with humor, growth, romance, and love.
I was excited to get this book in the mail. I love Rachael - she has always been so kind and generous towards me - thus her book got bumped right to the top of my review pile :)
Minor Adjustments was a fun, quirky, entertaining book. I knew from the start how this book would end up but was pleasantly surprised by some of the twists and turns the story took to get there. They kept me engaged and interested throughout the book. The silly facts that Stella was constantly sharing and the Australian culture added to the fun side of this book. The characters were easy to relate to and I found myself cheering them on and hoping for their plans to succeed.
Minor Adjustments is a great story with wonderful characters that I highly recommend.
As I try to patiently wait for Rachael's new book (Prejudice Meets Pride) to come out, I decided to re-read this one. It was just as good this time around. Such a sweet, heartwarming story.
I've always wanted to go to Australia. I watched Crocodile Dundee all the time growing up and even had a pen-pal there a long time ago. So, I loved the setting and learning more about Australia. Totally made me want to go there even more now. The characters were great too. Stella was a likable heroine. I loved her random facts and sassy personality. She has a big heart though and I felt bad that Ryan's future was so out of her hands. I can't imagine how hard that situation would be. Devon was of course likable. He was such a great guy and I loved how he would do anything for Ryan. Ryan was a cutie and I felt closer to him now that my kids are around his same age. They quickly work their way into your heart and you have to keep reading (and staying up past your bedtime) to see how everything is going to work out. Great story!
Cute, cute chick-lit story!! I've found that I really enjoy Ms. Anderson's stories. They are so cute with a good amount of clean romance and they're all unique.
Devon discovers that he's the sole guardian of a young boy from Australia, since his mother passed away. The boy's mother, Lindsay, lived with Devon's family on an exchange program 10 years earlier. Stella wants Ryan, but must honor his mother's wishes, since she's only a friend and solicitor. The characters are great! Loved it!
I must make a disclaimer that I can't review one of Rachael's books without severe bias. The woman is one of my favorite authors in-person, and I love her wholehearted, clean approach to romance. Rachael is a true romantic, and Minor Adjustments is yet another showcase of her wry humor and fully formed characters. I read this book in one night. When you need a lighthearted and sweet tale of two people finding love in the most unlikely of circumstances, this is a great fit!
LOVED it! Fun read with lots of spunk and an unexpected twist. Anderson definitely knows how to write romance!!! Highly recommend it for an entertaining and thoughtful read. You'll ask yourself some hard questions while you read and wonder what you'd do in the same situation. I know I did. You'll remember this book long after you've read it.
At its heart this well-paced book is a very sweet, very simple love story. But unlike most romance novels, this story revolves around the mutual love of three main characters, Devon, Ryan and Stella, as they develop a relationship that spans the world. Indeed the overarching theme of the book is about love in all its many guises, the tragic friendship of Stella and Lindsay, the long-distance romance between Devon and Stella (Will they? Won’t they?), the love of a family accepting a lost member back into its fold, the bittersweet decision to exchange an old, safe life for something unknown, the deep parental desire to do what’s best for a child. However, through Lindsay’s story the book also touches on the effects of withholding love and affection, how uncaring parents can scar a child for life and how even a short experience of true family warmth can act as a beacon of perfection decades later.
Told from the adults’ points of view, we experience what it is like to be Devon, torn between the job he loves and the child he must care for.
We get to experience Stella, lonely, frosty, unhappy with her friend’s decision, forced to trust a man she doesn’t know with a child she loves. We get to feel the wonder of exploring the Australian landscape: the bustle and landmarks of Sydney, the stunning beaches, the wild beauty of the outback and the Blue Mountains in particular. We get to live vicariously through Devon as he falls in love with Australian culture, wildlife (but not pet goldfish) and food (but definitely not Vegemite) and, of course, Stella. We watch the characters as they grow, playful Devon embracing his kind, caring, paternal nature as he learns to be a parent, and the wise-cracking, fact-loving Stella as she comes to realise that her friend Lindsay knew what she was doing after all.
The book is not all sweetness, however; there are villains and threats, most particularly in the guise of the wicked and abusive Justin Wells, the one man who can destroy their new-found perfection. Of course, it is no spoiler to say that love conquers all in the end (after all, what would this book be without a happy ending?), but so great has our affection for the family grown that we are genuinely relieved when things work out the way they do – a clear testament to Rachael Renee Anderson’s warm-hearted writing style.
A wholehearted recommendation from me for an uplifting book.
I have been interested in reading a Rachael Renee Anderson book for quite awhile. I have visited her blog several times and many of my blogging friends love her books.
I picked this book up at the Cedar Fort outlet store, wanting to give her books a try. I'm very glad that I purchased this book. It's definitely a keeper and will sit proudly on my shelf and one that I will recommend to my friends. I may even let them borrow it. :) (If they are really nice and trustworthy.) I will definitely be reading more of her work.
At the beginning of the book, Devon is a business owner and doing very well for himself. He is consumed by his work. When he is contacted and visits Australia to take guardianship of a four year old boy, it is the least likely scenario for him.
Reluctantly he agrees to a two week trial, thinking that he will walk away at the end of his two weeks to return back to his home and business in Chicago. What he doesn't realize is how much the love of a child can change you. The fact that the solicitor handling the case is beautiful and also loves Ryan is a benefit.
This is a great story about learning what love truly is and what is important to have a productive and fulfilled life.
Devon's life is his Internet security business based in Chicago, which he started from scratch into a successful company. Stella is a solicitor (attorney) in Australia who is handling the future of her best friend's little boy after she passed away from cancer. For some reason her best friend left guardianship to Devon based on when she lived with his family for several months ten years ago. Devon agrees to come to Australia and take care of the little boy, Ryan, for two weeks, but is determined to not bring him back home. Stella is hoping that he will change his mind and will become attached to the little boy and maybe even herself.
This was a great read from Rachael. I liked the characters and I thought they were pretty realistic in their actions and emotions. They go through quite a bit in the time the story covers and it is a difficult situation all around. I think what made the story great was a lot of the little things that the author added, such as the random facts, the humor (I loved when Devon's sister asked "Who are you and what have you done with our brother?"), and genuine knowledge of children's' behavior. I also loved the descriptions of the Australian landscape. So gorgeous! The book has a Christian influence, but nothing overbearing or denomination specific.
When Devon Pierce is told to come to Australia because he has been named the guardian of a four year old boy named Ryan, he doesn't believe it can be true. The boys's mother barely knew him from her time a middle school foreign exchange student, and they hadn't had any contact for years. But after Stella, the feisty and no nonsense solicitor handling the case convinces him to stay for two weeks to get to know Ryan, Devon finds himself wondering if he really could leave behind his company and single life in Chicago for fatherhood.
I really enjoyed this book - it was clean, heartfelt, and had some humor and fun mixed in.
Pros: clean, cute romance, cute kid, sacrifice, felt like the relationship was based on genuine love, not just fleeting infatuation.
Cons: circumstances a bit unbelievable, Colleen was a very quick and convenient friend, some big decisions made without us seeing a ton of weighing the consequence ie - Devon selling his company after 2 weeks after most of his adulthood having been a workaholic, Stella moving to America, getting a dog.

I love this book and I love little Ryan! It was a fun read and it had me feeling a little anxious near the end, even though this is the second time I have read this book and knew in broad details how it ended.
The characters were great and the overall growth of the characters just makes you love them more.
If you want a fun read with some heart, then you will enjoy this book.
I wanted to like this book, but it was kind of meh for me. The story didn't really seem believable & the characters' feelings never connected with me. I'm glad it was a library book and not a purchase.
A little bit slow towards the beginning but fell in love with it part way through. It wasn’t the same old plot that I often see and it was nice that the book wasn’t focused on just the “lovebirds”. Very refreshing.
Absolutely wonderful! I enjoyed this book cover to cover. You know how the story will end, who ends up with who, but it's the getting there that was so enjoyable. The character development was strong. The writing is beautiful and witty. A fabulous, easy read!
Minor Adjustments is a sweet, wholesome story about family, values and character. Devon Pierce owns his own company and is a self-proclaimed workaholic. One day he is asked to come to Australia by a solicitor to deal with the request from a young woman, Lindsay, who lived with his family for nine months as a foreign exchange student ten years earlier. Upon learning that she was dying of cancer, Lindsay decided that her four-year-old son, Ryan Devon, would be best taken care of by Devon, as he and his family had made a tremendous impact on her during her stay with them. Lindsay enlists the help of her best friend and solicitor, Stella, to coordinate the guardianship. But Stella has come to love Ryan as if he were her own child and wants what is best for him, so she persuades Devon to come and spend two weeks with Ryan in Australia before making a decision.
As Devon gets to know Ryan he comes to care for him, and the story explores the “minor adjustments” that Devon makes in his life to accommodate the addition of the small boy who loves custard. Plot elements include a blooming romance between Stella and Devon, the unexpected appearance of Ryan’s deadbeat-dad birth father, and Devon’s self-doubt about his parenting abilities. Anderson illuminates the critical role that a good man of character and a loving family plays in the life of a child.
Minor Adjustments is an inspirational story that conveys a sense of family, faith and humor. Anderson is very adept at writing “clean” romance, so there is no overt sex or cursing in the book. If you are looking for a nice, wholesome story of family, romance and happily-ever-afters, then you’ll love this book.
Absolutely loved this realistic fiction book! Children have a special place in my heart. This story had my heartstrings at the beginning.I love all the real emotional turmoil. It keeps you wanting resolutions and you keep reading. I loved the well developed characters and the lovable grandparents. Ryan, a 4 year old boy lost his mother to an aggressive pancreatic cancer. Her friend and Australian solicitor friend, Stella tried to convince her let her be Ryan's guardian, but to no avail. Instead, Lindsey gave guardianship to a man or rather boy she knew 10 years ago when she stayed with his family in America as a foreign exchange student. She had meant to call and make contact with Devon, but her time came too quickly. When Devon was summoned to Australia, he was resistant to leave his company responsibilities, but came anyway. Now he resigns himself to two weeks of looking after Ryan in Stella's effort to have Devon fall in love with Ryan and take on the guardianship role. It works, but what she doesn't expect is for herself to get attached to Devon and have a piece of her heart leave with Ryan. The other surprise was Devon's priority change after reading Lindsey's letter to him. He plans to sell his business and move back to Oregon so Ryan can have the extended family that Lindsey wanted him to have. Little bumps in the road come as an old fiancee comes back for a second chance with Devon and Ryan and as Ryan's biological father, Justin tries to get custody so he can live off government support. The last bump was the geography problem of where to live because Stella and Devon decide they can't be without each other.

If you've never picked up a book by Rachael Renee Anderson now it the time to go out and get one. She is one of those authors that can REALLY write chick lit clean romance. In her latest, Minor Adjustments, she once again weaves in characters with values and personalities that will leave you feeling inspired to be a better person. Set in Australia, land of Tim Tam cookies, lollies and kangaroos MA follows the dilemma of Devon Pierce, who is named rightful guardian to a child he's not met and a girl he was mere acquaintances with years ago. It's kind of an awkward situation for a high powered career man who never in his wildest dreams thought of becoming a bachelor father. But fireball Stella, the attorney handling the case will not take no for an answer.
There's plenty of tender hearted laugh out loud toddler parenting moments and unusual twists of plot. In then end you'll have that warm feeling that sometimes life works out just the way it is supposed to. My only hesitation with the book is in a choice Devon makes that seemed really out of character...and it's a big one. Without spoiling I can say since I worked adoptions and guardian cases for the State back in the day it was an emotional gulp for me to see the parties trying to work out the best placement.
Overall, I am once again in love with Rachaeal's writing and slow building romance molded from real life. You will want to read this one so head on over to the Goodreads giveaway to enter to win your own copy!
I've been wanting to read this book since it came out! The cover and the description just grabbed me. It might be because I love the movie "Baby Boom", and it seemed like the basis was about the same.
Having said that, the premise of both stories - a very focused businessperson being given a child from someone that they didn't know very well, was about the only similarity between them. I love that this story was set in Australia, a place that I really want to visit!
I loved the characters! Cute Ryan would be able to steal anybody's heart, Stella was very tenacious and I loved all the trivia that she knew, and I enjoyed watching Devon's change of heart. Devon's parents and family dynamics really cracked me up. His dad was great! Justin was a perfect bad guy. I really did worry there at the end about where Ryan would end up. And, is there really a chance for Devon and Stella to have any type of a relationship with one being in the US and the other in Australia? Hmmm
I really enjoyed this book! I would give it 4.5 stars. Very clean content.
I won this book in a blog giveaway. Rachael, herself, signed it before she sent in on to me!
I meant to just read this book for a few minutes and ended up being sucked in and finishing it in one day. For being a relatively short book it covered a lot of ground and had a more complex plot than I'd expected. I am loving this author!!!
MINOR ADJUSTMENTS is set, for the most part, in Australia. It is about a bachelor, Devon, who is given guardianship of a four year old boy named Ryan from someone unexpected in his distant past. He comes to Australia with the intention of saying no but ends up giving Ryan a chance. Over the course of the book Devon evolves from a selfish workaholic into a selfless father figure. The relationship between Devon and Ryan is really sweet. Thrown into the mix is Stella, the best friend of Ryan's mother, who died, and a great love interest for Devon. The ending was unexpected and I found myself skipping ahead a little bit because I was feeling uptight, though you expected a happy ending.
I bought this book with my allotment of "book money" this month and saved it for today because I knew I would need something like this to read.
I'm never disappointed when I pick up a book by Rachael Renee Anderson. I loved this book, the story, the cover... and the happily ever after. The pages flew by but don't worry, the kids are all accounted for, fed and now in bed. :)
One of my favorite lines (probably because it's a line straight out of almost every woman's head) is "Oh, he did not just say that."
The first book I read from this author was Luck of the Draw, and I knew immediately that I'd be stalking out her new books.
This was such a fun read, taking me to Australia and back again, and then back again. The back and forth between the two main characters was just awesome, and the ending did not disappoint.
There were quite few unexpected twists, and it all just made the ride more fun.
Pair a crazy situation, a hot guy, an adorable little boy, and a girl with enough snark/confidence/random facts and wrap it all up in a fabulous ending.
I really enjoyed reading this book - 4.5 stars. I tend to like fantasy a bit more than reality, but this story pulled me right in. I loved visualizing the Australian sights the characters visited. The main character, Devon, changed so much after getting to know a cute 4-year old boy. It was amazing. Honestly, I did not anticipate what he was going to do back in Chicago after returning to the states. I don't think I could have done it. Cool guy. The last 100 pages flew by. A very satisfying ending. Clean read for 14 & up. No swear words. No violence.
Darling, darling story about learning to trust yourself and do the right thing. Devon is delicious. Stella is superb, but Ryan stole the show. What an adorable 4 yr old who although reeling from the death of his mother, somehow manages to win over the heart of everyone he meets. I loved watching the relationships grow slowly over the course of the story. Knowing where it would lead was insignificant. The journey there was lovely. Stella's crazy facts for the day were fun and made me grow to love her character quickly. A feel-good-must-read-and-own kind of story. Great job again, Rachael!!
