We're Both Straight, Right?

Rate this book
Zack and Larry have been best friends since middle school and are now college roommates. But when Larry hears that other guys they know are getting paid to have gay sex on camera, he convinces Zack that they could pick up some quick, easy cash by being in one of these films… together.

If Zack thinks making a gay porn film with his best friend is disturbing, he is absolutely horrified when Larry proposes they “rehearse” for the film so they won’t be nervous in front of the director. As the they fumble their way through a checklist of sexual positions and acts, Zack finds himself seeing Larry in an entirely new light—a very sexy new light, and possibly a romantic one, as well. But does Larry feel the same? Or is he just doing it for the money?

Jamie Fessenden set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school's literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn't until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010.

After nine years together, Jamie and Erich married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis. Jamie recently left his "day job" as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.

What a cute, hot and entertaining best-friends-to-lovers story!

If you enjoyed No Homo, you'll like this one too. And vice versa.

Larry discovered an easy and quick way to come to cash - to make a straight guys first gay's experience porn film.

All that he needed was another straight guy. And who could fit the best way for his new project if not his best friend since the middle school and his room-mate Zack?

"Look," Larry said as he slipped under the covers in his bed, "if you're so disgusted by my dick, you don't have to suck it. But I'm not disgusted by yours-not as long as it's clean. Maybe that director guy will just let me suck you off."
"I'm not going to let you suck me off," Zack said as he undressed himself. "Never mind the fucking director."

Zack was not amused. At the beginning....

BUT....Larry convinced him that they needed a little practice watching each other jerk off. That was all.

And suddenly Zack was finding himself torn between conflicting emotions, ranging from disgust to arousal, and he wasn't quite sure what that meant.
Because while it was happening, he hadn't been disgusted at all.
He'd been incredibly turned on.

It was the RIGHT book at the RIGHT time pour moi!!!

This was a pleasant surprise for me. About 1/2 of my friends hate this one and the other half love it and, honestly, I expected to be in the "hate" camp. Though the book started off a bit shakily for me, once it got going I found myself growing more and more fond of it. If I could describe this book in one word it would be "adorable". It has some flaws but it was a really sweet read.

This is a pretty realistic GFY story, if I do say so myself. Some of my friends hated Larry but I thought his crude humor and awkwardness were key to his character and were sort of endearing. I loved his fluid view of sexuality and his level of comfort with himself.

There is one scene that everyone talks about in their reviews for this book. I won't give it away (it totally surprised me). Though it is unsexy, it felt real- so I kind of loved it. Does that make me weird??

All in all, this book made we want to devour everything that James Fessenden has ever written. If this is his worst book, then I'd love to see his good stuff. I have a feeling he could blow my mind.

Me again. Sharing silly reasons why I can’t get into certain books.

Edit: I’m changing my rating and leaving it unrated. I feel like my traumatic reading experience below did sully how I saw the whole book and I guess I feel like I wasn’t being fair. I will say that this wasn’t the book for me even without the 💨 incident.

Since it’s haunting me hours later I have to share…I was really taken out of the story when

On a kinder note, this is the second book I’ve read by this author. I did enjoy the other one ( The Rules ) and would still be open to trying more in the future. But it will be a while.

Absolutely marvelous. Zack and Larry were hysterical, how they cluelessly wandered into love while preparing to do a porno for some extra cash.
They're both so endearing and "average Joe" that I think I even know these guys. I've been up to my neck lately in angst and I really needed this lovely, laugh-my-ass-off read. Hats off the Jamie Fessenden for making my Monday much more bearable.

Warning though: do not be drinking coffee while reading this... your keyboard may not survive.

9/11/18 Update: Ack! I just realized I posted my review for "Touching Narcissus" here by mistake. Sorry! Here's my *actual* review for this book.

After reading (and loving) this author's work that's available on Kindle Unlimited, I decided to purchase several of his books as well, including this one. The story--if you can't tell by the cover + blurb--is about two friends who decide to accept a gay porn job for pay and discover they might not be as straight as they originally thought.

This sort of story trope has been done really well (see Hot Head) and not so well (insert book title here).

Jaime Fessender's version is fun and unique. What I have come to like about this author's writing style is that he often transcends standard tropes by creating unique characters/situations/details that are unexpected and work to make his stories seem fresh and unexpected. In this case, he made one of the MC's (Larry) somewhat crude/dorky. And while you think that would be a turn-off-for readers-that's not the case here at all. I also liked how he didn't follow into the stereotypical track of having both of the men not communicate their feelings until the very end. Instead, in a refreshing move, he had them engage in some pretty forthright dialogue with each other as their sexual exploits brought forth new feelings and emotions. Other small details--like the humorous moments at the porn shoot--also added to the uniqueness of the story as well.

I'm a selfish reader; I would have loved this story more had it been longer and/or included a little more heat. That said, I have to give this book 4 stars for it's humor and it's original take on a standard trope. Well done!

I must say... While my brain tells me that logically I should not like this story, I have to say that I... do.

I know, I know... I read other reviews below and how they don't like Larry and some other flaws, and I would probably agree, but there is just something about these two guys that I liked. It must be that I just love it when a bromance turns into a romantic relationship... And well, this relationship might not really be considered as a romantic one in the traditional sense. But to me, the characters were developed enough that I felt like they really were friends and I bought into the idea that their friendship could turn into a sexual relationship as well.

All this being said, is it weird that two straight friends agree to make gay porn? Well.. Yes, yes it is weird. (Reminds me of the film, "Hump Day") Is it realistic that two best friends decide to have sex for cash? Maybe, but I'm thinking no, probably not. But again, I just liked this story. I know I liked it because after I read it, I was still picturing these characters and wondering what they were up to... And to me, that is how I know I really liked a story.

So I think this one may be a toss up for you... If you can get past the idea of two straight college guys agreeing to make gay porn for no real reason (other than getting paid obviously) and if you can get past the idea that one of the college boys is way more willing than the other and kind of pushes his friend into the whole idea (which I didn't mind so much, because I truly believed they were best friends and that the other friend could have said no at any time)... Then I'd suggest this book, I'm glad I took a chance on it, maybe you will be too. :)

While I always welcome "best friends to lovers" theme, this one doesn't really work for me. The reason is mainly for one of the characters

I'm not really into Larry ... somehow I feel that he goads Zack into the gay sex experience by pushing a bit too hard, which ends up a bit like emotional blackmail. Larry knows that Zack will feel guilty if Larry acts like he is hurt by Zack's rejection to do the porn movie and to experiment. Zack doesn't really see Larry as that potential lover, and I'm not buying his journey to love. Because of that, it doesn't feel heartfelt and true.

The story gets 2 stars, but the extra 0.5 stars is for the cover. What can I say, I think the cover is just so cute. Love the colorful fonts and the photo is a bit naughty (and inviting).

Reread. Very good m/m romance about two straight college guys who have been best friends for years. When one of them learns how much money they can make doing a "straight guys' first gay experiences" porn shoot, he convinces the other to do it with him.

I requested a copy of this novella after reading someone else's review, and being rather intrigued.

The plot is simple - two college boys, best friends since childhood, roommates, but straight, short on funds, hope to make some extra cash filming a short porn scene under the premise that two straight men are getting it on for the first time.

And because both of them are a wee bit nervous, they decide to practice beforehand.

This was equally funny and sweet, hawt and emotional. Told from Zack's 3rd person POV, this novella manages to take the reader inside Zack's mind and follow along as he slowly starts seeing Larry in a new light. The author made me believe that Zack started to fall for his best friend, even though they'd never before entertained the idea of being anything but straight. And while we don't get a look at the workings of Larry's mind, there's enough subtext to see that despite his goofy dorkiness, he does have feelings just the same.

It's difficult to write a novella. Some cram in too much, while some leave the reader hanging. This one avoided either. It was short, yes, but it said all it needed to say.

Excellent work, Jamie. It's a real shame that it took me so long to discover it.

** I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. A positive review was not promised in return. **

A hot little story! I enjoyed how the author progressed Zack from totally straight to fooling around with his roommate to being in love. That's a tough one, but the author did a bang up job. Yum!

ETA: On rereading this, I upped the star rating for 4 to 5. It really is a perfect little gay-for-you story, both sweet and sexy.

I didn't like this story at all but I'm giving it 2⭐ because I liked Larry.

If you're expecting a hot, sexy telling of two best friends who end up doing porn for one day and in the meantime fall in love, you're in the wrong place here, hate to say it.

🔵 Best friends to lovers
🟢 Are they really best friends? Doubtful
🟠 Everyone hates Larry
🟣 Larry wants to do one porn take and experiment, so bi-awakening? GFY? Not sure
🟡 Zack doesn't love you, Larry, get yourself a new bestie

This book told the story of two best friends Larry and Zack and from the get-go I didn't like the way Larry's character was portrayed. He was the eternal idiot with absolutely no value, not even to Zack, his bestie, because even Zack was embarrased many times over when he was out and about with Larry.

Zack's friends all hated Larry and when Zack all of a sudden fell in love with Larry - it definitely was not believable.

Their sexual experimenting went wrong with Larry again being just human - he was open to it and the fatal mistake he did was fart when doing a 69, so that's what made Zack stay away for a couple of days at his other friend's place, you know the one who hates Larry. I mean, who doesn't in this book, right?

So if one MMC doesn't ever catch a break and is only seen as a dork who's oblivious to the world around him - and the author even mentions he possibly had Asperger's, so that's even worse to be treated so bad - how is this going to be a love story? Any strong feelings that were supposed to be developing from the lifelong friendship combined with the bi-awakening - none of it was believable.

The only thing I kept thinking about was Larry, you need to run! You need to get away from these assholes and find a few guys that like to hang out with you AND find a boyfriend who'll appreciate you, because Zack's dick isn't worth it.

This was a very cute novella about two “straight” best friends who decide to do a porn movie to make money. Of course true love follows its own course. It made me smile.only complaint is that I wanted it to continue.

Larry and Zach are college roommates. Larry is the dorky nerd and Zach is the more social of the two. One night after a frat party, Larry tells Zach he wants to do a gay-for-pay porno because he needs the extra money to fix his car. Zach is not amused that Larry would want to have sex on camera with some stranger. Larry, on the other hand, has no intention of doing it with a stranger and tells Zach he wants him to be his partner in the venture and they can split the cash – after all it’s only blow-jobs! Zach objects for all of ten minutes, then gets on board with the plan. The two men “practice” for their big on screen debut (frottage, hand-jobs, kissing) and the more sex they have together, the more they crave it and then Zach starts to have feelings for his best friend. But is Larry only in this for the money?

When Wave gave me this book to review, I was excited. I adore the tropes in this book: Gay-For-You, first time college experimentation, sex on camera and best friends turned lovers. We’re Both Straight, Right? has all this and more. I loved the characters of Larry and Zach. Zach, the poor put-upon friend who will do anything for Larry, and Larry the geek who has crazy ideas and drags Zach into them. Plus, the other positive for me is that Larry and Zach actually acted like guys! Horny, immature, silly guys. Take Larry. During one of their practices, Larry farts after getting a hand-job from Zach. Loudly. Like a room clearing fart. Larry, typical guy, thinks that’s hysterical while Zach leaves in a huff. Growing up with two brothers and serving alongside 20 guys in my military unit for over three years (I was the only girl), I can relate to fart humor. Unlike some other male characters in m/m romance, Larry and Zach were very realistic. They acted the way real guys do and I appreciated that.

As for the plot – handwave. I mean besides the Corbin Fisher web site, does anyone really believe all those guys doing porn for the ‘first time’ are really straight? (If you do, I have swamp land to sell you in Florida). The plot in the book was fun, totally unrealistic, but fun. Mostly the book describes the sexual awakening of Zach and how his feelings change towards Larry. There is a lot of sex in the novel, the practice sessions are vast and the final scene when they film the movie is hot. Again I am not sure any guy (or girl) would have anal sex for the first time on camera in a room of strangers…but suspend disbelief and go with it.

We’re Both Straight, Right? is one of those light-hearted reads that you will either love or hate. If you like the tropes I described earlier, this is a must-buy for you. If you want a little more realism in your romance novels, then you probably won’t enjoy it. Myself, I loved it from beginning to end. Personally I am hoping Larry and Zach will make another porno, so I’ll get a sequel. Larry the Nerd becomes Larry the Sex God when he’s on camera!

This is a hilariously funny novella. Larry and Zack truly are meant for each other, except it takes them a while to realize it.

Zack tells the story and some of his observations made me laugh out loud. He also struggles with his emerging realization about his sexuality, accompanied by totally unexpected feelings, a lot more than Larry seems to. He's a wonderful guy though, even if he behaves like an insensitive idiot a couple of times.

Larry is a total dork, but someone Zack has always liked - as a friend. Larry seems to have a lot fewer issues with making a gay porn movie with Zack and that is probably because he's a lot less complicated. He's also used to being looked on as slightly 'odd' and people thinking he's gay doesn't seem to worry him all that much.

If you like watching two best friends realize they may be attracted to each other in more than one way, and if you appreciate humor in your stories you will probably like this book.

This book was awkward and choppy. The two main characters went from one extreme to the other inexplicably, physically and emotionally and essentially between one scene and the next. And seriously, that gas scene was just nasty. Not for me. And at nearly $4 for 52 pages, I'm a little bitter (and still grossed out). Ick.

BR with lovely Elsbeth

2.5 stars

I was glad I read this with Elsbeth, because doing updates together made it at least some fun to read this book.

We have two best friends, roommates in college, who are going to shoot a gay porn movie together to earn some money. So Larry decides they need to practice a lot before they can do this.

This sounded so good to me. I was really looking forward to reading this shorty!

description

But.. I didn’t like it.

description

I never warmed up to either Larry or Zack. I could appreciate Larry’s honesty and there were some pretty funny scenes because of it. But overall I felt like Zack was way too uptight and Larry too pushy. And boy, did these two have trouble communicating.

It lacked romance. And I mean romance in the most broad sense of the word. But I never felt their connection. Zack was confused at the start and all of a sudden he was in love with Larry. And Larry, who said to Zack he didn’t feel the same way, but was declaring his love a few days later. I wasn’t buying it.

Not the book for me. The writing was great and there were some hilarious scenes, but I need to at least like the MC’s and I didn’t.

Nice friends-to-lovers GFY read...

I liked Larry. Obviously didn't have any problems with trying "gay things" with his buddy Zack.

Zack was shocked in the beginning that he was liking it so much but he opened up to Larry pretty quick!

"Yeah," Zack said, looking at Larry and realizing once more just how beautiful he was. Those bright blue eyes looked back at him, full of tenderness, and Zack marveled at how it had taken him so long to see past Larry's dorky behavior and crude sense of humor, to realize just how amazing he really was.

As much as I like GFY stories, The story didn't really confince me.. It was just toooo easy, too quick!! It didn't really work for me..

Zack and Larry, who'd been best friends for years, were college roommates. They dated girls, although most of them seemed to find Larry the dork of all ages. He didn't often get a second date. Zack, who wasn't as socially inept, had better luck.

An acquaintance they attended classes with gave Larry the idea to be in a porno, which they would get paid for. It was to be about straight college boys fucking. Well, they were straight, they were college boys, and the money would come in handy, since Zack's piece of garbage car needed to be repaired and they had no cash.

Zack was a little nervous about the whole thing, but Larry was his friend, and he wasn't about to let anyone else get sucked off by Larry.

Of course they'd need to practice. They wanted to look good on camera, didn't they? Even if no one they ever knew downloaded the porn, and even if they used the pseudonyms of Butch and Robert. (no gay man would believe someone named Sundance!)

Watching as they practiced, as Zack began to realize his feelings for Larry were more than friendship, as he worried whether they'd just be fuck buddies and then discovering how much more they actually were... It was a fun read for a Sunday afternoon that actually had me laughing out loud.

So kudos, Jamie! You did a great job with this!

Update: considering I’ve read this 3 or 4 times now, I feel like it’s only fair to up the rating. It’s kind of a heartwarming read for me. It feels real, and sweet.

***

I had no expectations going into it and read it on a whim, which might have helped me enjoy it more, since I see the reviews are pretty mixed here.

I thought it was really cute. Two college-aged, lifelong friends who never thought about each other sexually until something forces them to, and then figuring out what it means from there. It felt real - like how guys that age would really talk and act with one another. One is obviously more mature and the other less mature but also less conflicted and more easygoing because of it. It was also funny in parts. It was a win for me! I actually wished it was longer.

I've read this one twice now ... the first time I read it I just said "fun & fluffy but not as good as Str8te Boys" ... I still think that but I'd also have to add that Larry was a bit of a bastard who used unreasonable pressure to push Zack too far too fast ... even tho' there is a HEA, I did find myself wanting to slap Larry a few times because he was so frickin' petulant.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very fun read and I had a blast with Zack and Larry. I thought Larry was a great character and I found myself facepalming at some of the stuff he did.

The cameraman's daughter was a hoot. And ED! OMG! *shakes head* Is he the personification of every bad thing you've ever heard about a porn director or what? Awesome!

Thanks for the lovely read, Jamie!
