about her new books:
As The War Between the States closes in, Lizzie flees her home leaving behind her hopes and dreams. She finds a new home, where finery and social graces will buy nothing, not even friends. To the people of Stanly, County North Carolina, Lizzie is a familiar story. She is just another young widow with a babe in her arms. Her secret past will forever be buried deep in the sandy soil of Charleston. "Beyond Sandy Ridge," is one woman's journey of survival, a collection of her most intimate desires and her passion for a man named Joel. Many of those she loved are forever silent. Read this as a sequel to Carolina Rain. Here's my review for that novel as it applies to both:
Read this novel as part of a trip to North Carolina. Set in the Civil War period it gave a good feel for the pain and suffering in the South, issues surrounding slavery etc. and that is what I was looking for. The BIG downside for me was that there was very poor editing and e-book format was very faulty. I would strongly advise the author to pull the book, have it professionally edited and hire someone to do her formatting.
Beyond Sandy Ridge, however, did not have the strength of character development or story arc that Carolina Rain had. At times it felt like Ms. Brewer was rushing through the story to get it done.
Sorry for the harsh review. I would not bother if I did not think the author is a talented writer and could put out a more finished novel. She did add to the enjoyment of my visit to North Carolina and rounded out my feel for the Civil War experience from the perspective of the Confederacy.
Lizzie has moved to North Carolina with her daughter Victoria to live with her sister, Sallie and her two small children, and their parents. Life altering events change Lizzie's role in the family to leader of the family when her parents unexpectantly die. Lizzie, Sallie, and the children are forced to go on and survive the war while the men are away at battle.
Will Sallie's husband Ransom come home? Will Lizzie's fiancée Joel Simpson come home? Will the women and the children be able to make it in their absence?
I read Carolina Rain by this author first and then was delighted to discover this was the sequel. Beyond Sandy Ridge may be even better than Carolina Rain. It is so real and the characters are like family to me now. I would love to see Nancy B. Brewer's made in to a movie. Her books will not disappoint you. Can't wait for her next book!
While the first chapter was like walking barefoot on a gravel road, once she found her gear, it was cadillacing all the wy. Kept me up fat too te, I did not want to stop readingla
I couldn't put this book down! The storyline was captivating and I felt that I actually knew the characters! Loved the historical information as it provided some insight as to the emotional climate the characters were experiencing during the actual time period. I highly recommend this series and can't wait to read the next book.
