Versace Sisters

Rate this book
Another hilarious offering from bestselling author Cate Kendall. From the backwaters of Tasmania to the sophisticated streets of Sydney, sisters Bellarene and Serandipity have come a long way. As international flight attendants the world is their oyster – until Sera fell in love and settled for family life. Obsessed with keeping up appearances, Sera goes to extreme lengths to maintain the illusion of perfection, while Bella just wants to fly away from the responsibility of mothering her little sister, from the sadness of her broken marriage, and from memories of the past. Gathering her friends at Stitch 'n' Bitch is like therapy. There's a lot of talk, and not much knitting - and they wouldn't have it any other way. Ditzy Mallory has her own shocks in store, and single mum Chantrea agonises over work and childcare. Widowed single dad, Sam, is terrified of the dating scene, and Sera's uptight neighbour, Jacquline, has a little secret, one that could destroy her neatly ordered world. Meanwhile Joan, Sera's mother-in-law, watches then all and sniffs with disdain at their trivial worries. Sera wants to be perfect. Bella just wants to be free. Will the sisters get what they want?

One of those feel good stories in which all the characters suffer from some horrible situation and by the end of the book all the good characters get their happy ending, and you're left laughing at the baddies. It wasn't a bad book, just horribly cliched. Still, it's fun to escape into a world of matching table cloths with cutlery and what not, so I don't mind giving this book four stars. Don't go in expecting Austen; this is like going for a Woman's Day magazine; not that there's anything wrong with that, ay?

My sister gave me this book back in 2015 and knowing her tastes I really was not interested, to be honest. Yet I finally bit the bullet for my 2021 reading challenge and got stuck into it. I must say I quite enjoyed it - the last half at least. The first half was full of the whole character personality description of each and everyone, all who seemed more interested in prestige and glamour than anything like a real trauma in life. However, this all changed halfway through and the story was full of fun and some valuable life lessons for them all. Very realistic in that sense, although all coming to similar conclusions in life at the same time was a bit of a Hallmark movie moment really.
All in all a good book to read on a lazy winter's day or sitting by the pool on a hot day.
