Ryan is lonely, down-on-his-luck, and stranded in the wilds of Reno, Nevada, for New Year’s Eve. All he wants is someone special to share his evening with. Then he meets Landon, a hottie he’s chatted up online, in the flesh, and suddenly Ryan’s night isn’t so bleak. In fact, he starts hoping that maybe, with a little bit of luck and some New Year’s Eve magic, there might be enough spark between them to last through to the next year and beyond.
It has been 3 years since Ryan has had someone to kiss at the bells and he's hoping this year might be different. Things are not looking good for him until he runs into Landon, an internet buddy of his. I was a bit puzzled by the significance of the title. I thought I knew what it referred to but I was wrong. The true meaning is revealed right at the very end and made me smile.
Interesting little story which is a mix of immediate, direct desperation and angst (on the main character's part) in the beginning and a jump into the future with an unexpected twist at the end. Even though I felt there was too much crammed into such a short story, in terms of developments between the characters, the story's ending left me with a smile.
If you like unusual stories and relationships that are not straightforward, you might want to give this one a go.
This short chapter is like on "speed dial" Fast, to fast, and Gosh everything is like in speed motion. Okay that atmosphere "will he find me, will he not" was cute, and the kiss, sweet! But that's it!
This sweet short begins with Ryan, visiting (I presume) his brother on New Year’s Eve. They plan to go bar-hopping with his brother’s girl friend and Ryan is a bit down about not having anyone to kiss at midnight … again. Even the promised gay bar doesn’t pan out, however later at another bar he happens upon someone he chatted with on-line, but after a brief conversation, he is pulled off with his friends, but does give Ryan his number. With the fiance’s encouragement he texts Landon saying where he’ll be at midnight but receives no response, as the minutes get closer to midnight, will he have someone to kiss this year or will it be another dud.
Ryan really has an appealing voice. There’s a nice touch of humour and the poor dear is 24 and feeling so sorry for himself. For many of us that seems so young, but his attitude and feelings were appropriate for a young man. He was a bit resigned to his fate but hopeful that maybe he’d get lucky. All we wanted was a kiss at midnight, not a grand romance or even a date. His description of Los Angeles, where even there he was unable to find a boyfriend was quite cute:
… a thousand young twinks swarm the city like a large gang of man-hungry zombies …
You get very little information about Landon beyond what Ryan knows about him. He’s just the guy Ryan hooks up with and it’s all told from Ryan’s perspective. You just know that Landon, from Ryan’s perspective, is “hot nerd—doofy yet somehow unattainable”. I really did like Kami, Ryan’s future sister-in-law. She was the one encouraging Ryan all the way to contact Landon, and thought it was “so romantic”, while his brother was more of a typical guy with a “whatever” attitude.
Although their one night together appears to be a one-off, given that Landon lives near Reno and Ryan in Los Angeles, there is a sweet epilogue taking them forward 16 or so years. Perhaps the ending was a bit fairytale sweet, but I enjoyed this light little read with a very likable character in Ryan, who truly is the star of this short.
I did like this but it seemed more like an introduction to a bigger story...I want to read about these guys getting together...between the sheets, specifically. The series is called "There's a First Time For Everything", which led me to believe that the stories would contain the "first time" (meaning sex, right?) between 2 men...and at least one of the characters is a gay "virgin". I hope the other stories contain more erotic content, but this was a sweet story.
