This is really a must-read for anyone interested in early century museum expeditions, Akeley's Natural History and Field Museum panoramas (and Milwaukee's), early century discussions of missing link, animal preservation, and/or animal documentary cinematography. Akeley is not a naturalist in the way we would define that today, certainly, but his notions of animals and how they relate to humans have impacted American discourse in a major way.
