This was a spontaneous read for me and so I can't say whether I was looking forward to it or personally cringing from its promise. Basically this will just as non-biased a review as I can give.
The story was fun but way too quick. Exploring a girl's imagination as she sets off for a day of fun on a snowy day we are given a prose-like review of the elements needed for this adventure - her role, the missing knight, an evil prince, etc. The only reason it doesn't bother me much with this brief plot is this was the way I would play with my imagination when I was alone.
The only reason that this book didn't receive another star is since of its interactiveness versus its audience. The book is written for young readers and most of these aren't too nice with these types of books. So although it could be fun to watch the dog run off into the distance in celebration of being a dog on a snowy day by the turn of a wheel or the witty twisting of the villain off the page it was just too much.
Recommendation-wise I would suggest this book to young elementary-age children who have learned to carefully handle such a delicate book since otherwise this book won't last long at all.
Imagination abound as Razzle-Dazzle Ruby sets out on a day of adventure and fun in the snow wonderland near her home. Battling fierce snowmen and braving the wintry day she stumbles upon noblemen and even a knight. With each page interact with Ruby by pulling, turning and spinning to make each scene come alive for little ones and adults alike.
Normally I’m not at all a fan of books that require pulling or turning to make pages come to life, but Razzle-Dazzle Ruby by Masha D’yans happens to be an exception to that rule. My reasoning for my usual dislike rests squarely with my children’s interactions with them in the past. In most cases books with pulling things get torn to pieces in a matter of days, it’s terrible and I hate to contribute to that kind of damage to a book so I normally avoid them. But you know what? Littlebug loved this story so much that she has been overly cautious with it. It’s adorable! She’ll pick up the book with the utmost of care just to insure that no harm will come to it’s gorgeous pages. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading it (nearly everyday mind you) and interacting with the imaginative adventure Ruby goes on.
Just in time for winter to be here Razzle-Dazzle Ruby is sure to please readers of any age. Filled with the gorgeous illustrations of Masha D’yans readers entire a world of blustery snow and whimsical delights. This is certainly a book both of my kiddos enjoyed, but most of all Littlebug. Let me not fail to mention either that I personally enjoyed the illustrations so much that I’d consider purchasing a print by D’yans for Littlebug’s room. D’yans is an incredibly talented artist and I’m excited to see what else she comes out with next. As for Razzle-Dazzle Ruby, it shows young readers there is magic to be found every day you step outside your front door and you never know exactly what to expect but it will certainly be an adventure.
“Razzle-Dazzle Ruby” by Masha D’Yans is a picture book intended for the nursery age group, ranging from birth to five years old. Ruby is a imaginative little girl who wakes up one morning and is in her “Razzle-Dazzle” mood. Her and her dog go on a snowy day adventure, where her imagination goes wild and she comes across knights, villains and her own happily ever after. I decided to read check this book out because of the sparkly front cover, which I thought would attract younger readers to it as well. I gave this book three stars because it is a pop up book and is very interactive until the last page. The story itself is rather short and has no real point in my opinion, but it is just that of a little girl using her imagination on a snowy day. Younger readers will definitely be able to relate because their minds are also very imaginative at this age. Although this is a pop up book and the children will probably be distracted by that, the actual illustrations really drew me in as well. As far as using this book in a classroom setting, this would be something I would let them read by themselves on free time rather then something I would use in a lesson plan.
When I first saw this book I thought it would be perfect for my kindergarten girls. It has a really cute little girl (Ruby) in a purple dress and flashing stockings. It has glitter on the cover which speaks "girl book" loud and clear. Once I read the book though I realized that the story could appeal to any child, boy or girl. Living in a state that is famous for its winter sports, especially skiing, the children around here have lots of experience playing in the snow. The first test was my four-year-old nephew and the book passed with flying colors. He very much enjoyed the tabs and pulls. Then I decided to try it with my kindergartners. I wasn't sure how well it would work with the tabs and pulls, but it turns out the students really liked it, both boys and girls. The flipping snowman was an especially big hit. I highly recommend this book for both boys and girls who like playing in the snow. It would go great with Ezra Jack Keats' The Snowy Day or Shirley Neitzel's The Jacket I Wear in the Snow for a story time about playing in the snow.
A dazzling, interactive read that will take readers into Ruby's magical world full of color and imagination.
Ruby is a young girl who's adventures begin one morning when she awakes to find it's snowing. With her dog Rocket by her side they venture out into a world blanketed by snow to play. Ruby's lovely imagination makes this short, eye catching book a memorable read.
With it's beautiful colors, pull tabs and moving wheels on different pages, Razzle-Dazzle Ruby is simply a must have book. I would definitely recommend this for ages 4 and up, and even then 4 yr olds may need help with the pull tabs.
Review via Cracking the Cover Masha D’yans captures a child’s exuberance as she romps through the snow. Imagination is the name of the game as everyday activities become a Ruby-sized fairy tale.
Watercolor illustrations are enhanced by paper engineering. Pages become interactive spreads that sparkle, spin, pop and twirl. Children will love manipulating the images, however, the stiffness of some of the interactive elements may be hard for little fingers to manage. “Razzle-Dazzle Ruby” is a charming picture book that children will enjoy time and time again.
A girl's imagination on a snowy day casts herself and her dog as the Snow Queen and her trusty Knight "in barking armor." They go off to have adventures. Colorful and visually exciting/appealing, but the story ends almost before it begins. Brief. Not a stellar read, but definitely fun to look at.
*Note: This is an interactive/pop-up book with movable pieces. I borrowed it from the library and although it was new, it was already falling apart from all of the love and attention it had already received.
A dazzling short gem that interacts with young readers with flaps and wheels that showcase eye-catching artwork. Ruby fills her world with an array of swirling colors which matches her inventive imagination as she takes to the snowy outdoors with her dog, looking for imaginary adventure. Highly recommended for ages four and up.
A truly cute book about the imagination of a little girl. The movement of illustrations keep the reader involved and engaged throughout the book! The illustrations are well done and colorful! Great for young readers in first-second grade. Simple sentences and text.
I enjoyed this interactive picture book. Some of the pull outs and other techniques could have had more and the story was a little disjointed at time. I had fun reading it.
It was fine, but I found the pop up element distracting. Too many things to do to move the parts. I would have liked it better if it was just sparkly. I can't put a book like this in my library.
