Despite the blah title and run of the mill cover photo, this was a really satisfying little chapter book about a boy moving into the country and befriending two ponies ... and their owner. It's aimed for UK readers, so any American kids may be confused as to why Mum is spelled that way, or why chips are mentioned, but French fries are pictured.

Although the title hints that the first pony referred to becomes Our Protagonist's pony, it doesn't hint at how this happens. It's done in a clever and believable way. Even though I'm 55, I wasn't able to predict this.

There is also a lot of good information about basic care for a pony, and how much time and energy it requires to care for the pony correctly.

But the best thing about the book are the illustrations. Goodness -- Neil Reed can draw! He does better with a pencil than many children's book illustrators do with a full color palette. He's quite realistic, and doesn't try to beautify anything, which makes his work even more beautiful to me.

This book is part of a series by Tessa Krailing called My First Pet. Based on this one, I might check out the others.

I gave it three stars as there is a bit of actual Equine Terminology, a reader can actually learn from this book.

But the storyline was okay at best, I would recommend other horse books before this one if the reader is looking for just a book.

But if that reader wanted a story with facts and actual teachings then yes, My First Pony would be a pick.

I would recommend this book to a girl or boy that likes ponies. The book my first pony is about a boy that moved from the city to the country. His dad said that there are no animals in the country, so he gets even less exited to move there. When he gets there, he gets really sad because there are no boys to play soccer with. His mom told him to wander around and follows a trail that leads him to stable with two horses. He sits there and talks to one of the horses, one of the suddenly a girl comes in. She asked him what he was doing there. He explains that he is the son of the new person working, the girl introduces herself as Claire. She asked the boy if he can ride horses because the horse he was talking to, Misty is to small for her. The boy says no all sad. Claire asked him if he wanted to walk Samson the other horse. After their walk, the boy went running home to tell his mom all about his day, and ask her if he could take riding lessons. His mom told him that they were too expensive, but she would try to get a part time job to pay them. The boy agreed to save his money to help pay. After he wasn’t taking with his mom he when back to the stables and told Claire about his plans. She said that it was a good plan. Then asked him if he wanted to help groom the horses. He said yes, and once he was done she said that it was his first lesson. He acted all surprise than she told him that she was going to teach him how to ride horses in exchange of him helping at the stables. After she taught him how to saddle the horses. Then after she gave him lessons every day on how to ride horses. Once she thought he was ready she told him about a horse competition that she was going to enter. She told him he could ride on Misty while she was walking her in the competition. Even though, they didn’t win first place, they got a prize for hard work. At the end Claire gave Misty away to the boy in the condition that Misty would live at the stables and he would help with the Ponies.
