Hit and Run, an interesting mystery novel by Norah McClintock suggests the story of an eleven-year-old child names Mike which is left to be taken care of by his uncle Billy after his mother's death in a hit and run accident. Throughout the novel, there are different factors that drive Mike to have one of the most painful times in his lifetime.

When first reading the book, I was not into it at all. I had thought that the book was going to be just about Mike finding out who killed his mom but in the end, it didn't. Mike ended the novel by uncovering different crimes committed by people that were close to him which surprised me. Overall this book is interesting and I will recommend it to people that have an interest in suspense and mystery novels.

Hit and run by Norah Mcclintock is about a boy named Mike whose mom is killed in a hit and run incident and is now living with his uncle Billy. Mike gets into lots of trouble and his grades have gone down since his mom has died. One night Mike and his friends Vin and Sal were walking down a street and notices that the back of a delivery truck is still open. Vin hoped in the back of the truck and threw Sal and Mike some boxes of sugary goods, Mike knew it was not right so he ditched the cupcakes and continued to follow Vin and Sal. One day Mike went over to see if his history teacher Mr. Riel also an ex-cop could tell him anything about the hit and run his mom died in since the never found the suspect that hit Mikes mom. Riel called about and got some friends to look into the case. While walking home Mike stops at his moms friends house Mrs. Juhn a korean lady that seen mom last to talk about the night of the hit and run. Mrs. Juhn was just getting home when Mike was walking by, then out of the blue Mrs. Juhn fell and Mike caught her. Mrs. Juhn told Mike that the last thing Mikes mom did was she went to go talk to the man with the shiny teeth. After that Mrs. Juhn said she was tired and wanted to go to bed but it was at lunch time. Mike told Riel about the weird stuff that happened and Riel said they needed to head back over there in a hurry. A few days later Mikes uncle Billy was found dead in his house. Since Mike had nowhere to go after school one day he went to his uncle Billys closest friends to stay. After staying at Dan and Lew’s place Mike went and talked to a lady who would put him in a foster home for a while and the lady said “ It doesn't have to be forever (pg 233)”. When Mike got back to dan's place Dan was really angry and Mike didn't know why. Dan and Lew held Mike hostage for a while but a few days after the kidnapping they heard a knocking on the door and it was Riel… Who killed Mikes mom? Was it an accident? Who will Mike live with? Why is Dan and Lew holding him hostage? I really liked this book and would recommend it to someone who likes mystery.

I was lucky to get this by Lerner Publishing Group via Net Galley as a complimentary book in exchange for my honest review.

My reviews always reflect my own person thoughts and feelings when reading a book.

I didn't know really what to expect when I first started to read this, I had the assumed thought it would be about someone being ran over and the book all about hunting the driver. It wasn't though, it was about a lot of things. It lead to the way in which it happened and how and why, it was brilliantly told.

A young boy being left an orphan when his Mother was ran down by a hit and run driver. His Uncle taking him on and rearing him, however, his Uncle wasn't the best of role models! as you will see when reading it.

I was enthralled throughout this book. I have some book buddies, so I messaged them and text some about this book and how I couldn't leave it alone. I read it at every chance in the day and finished it completely by the evening.

I would highly recommend this book.

Hit and Run by Norah McClintock is a very interesting book. It is a mystery book about protagonist Mike, the son of his late mother who was killed in a hit and run "accident". The antagonist in this book are Mike's uncles friends, Linn and Dan. This book it written in 1st person from the perspective of Mike. I really like this because it lets you understand all of his thoughts and ideas running through his head. This book opens up on the day the accident occurs. Which hooks you into the book and makes it almost impossible to put it down. I really liked this because it put me into the perspective of 12 year old Mike and what he though was going on during that difficult time. The book then jumps ahead to four year later, where Mike is now 16. He is now taken into custody of his 22 year old uncle, Billy. During his schooling Mike figures out that his teacher, Mr. Riel, was the police officer who was investigating in his mothers accident. Mike decides to talk to him to find out what really happened with his mother. When he does this he finds out some shocking information about the case. This makes him dig deeper into this case to try and sole his moms unsolved case. This gets him and his family in trouble. The climax of this book was when Mike's uncle is murdered because he told Mike inside information about the case. Mike ends up being kidnapped by his uncles best friends, Dan and Lin, who turn out to be the murders of Billy and Mikes Mom. Riel finds him and takes him into custody and they decide to work together to help solve mysteries together. I really enjoyed this book because the story plot was written very well and the book was very intriguing. The theme of this book would be to never give up on what you believe in because if Mike had given up on his moms case Dan and Lin would still be running free. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mysteries or to anyone who usually finds reading boring because this book is very good.

Hit and Run is an interesting mystery novel by Norah McClintock. McClintock tells the story of an eleven-year-old child named Mike McGill with both parents deceased. Mike is left to be taken care of by his twenty-five-year-old uncle Billy after his mother's death in a hit-and-run accident. Throughout the novel, many different events drive Mike to have one of the most painful times in his lifetime. Along with these terrible events Mike’s grades start to slip, he loses his girlfriend, he battles a court case and he loses his job. With these problems in the background Mike’s teacher Mr. Riel, who was the former cop who worked his mom’s hit-and-run case, agreed to look into his mom’s case again. When Mike starts asking Billy questions Billy tells the truth about his friends and his secret chop shop. The next day Billy is found dead. With no one else to go to Mike stays with Billy’s friends overnight. With Mike digging around he finds out they are a part of a mysterious break-in that left the owner dead. When Mike confronts them they tie him up and take him to the garage. With no one knowing where Mike is he thinks he is next on the chopping block.
I liked this book because it keeps the reader on their toes. Each time you think Mike is done with one unfortunate event another one pops up. I like how Mike’s teacher first gets on him about his grades, but then Riel becomes a father figure that Mike never had. On the other hand, I do not like how the book starts slowly. It takes well into the book before the reader starts to learn the real plot of the story. Another thing I did not like is when the solving of the mystery happens it goes by fast and does not give great detail on how some parts are figured out.
All in all, I rate the book four out of five based on the unique plot, the characters, and the pace of the book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a quick mystery book.

Fifteen-year-old Mike still isn’t over the death of his mother four years ago. He tries to do the things that would make her proud, but his friends aren’t great influences, and neither is his young uncle who happens to be his guardian. As he falls behind in his classes, his teacher and ex-cop Mr. Riel begins to reach out. He seems know more than anyone how Mike struggles and, as it turns out, may know more than anyone about his mother’s death too. Together Mike and Riel begin digging deep into the story behind Mike’s mother’s death. They uncover shocking truth and encounter unexpected danger, all while unraveling the mystery of that fateful hit and run four years ago.

Written simply, with just the right amount of detail, reading this book can feel like watching a movie. The storyline is practically unpredictable with exciting developments in Mike and Riel’s investigation in almost every chapter. Mike’s distinct character is easy to get attached to. He makes a lot of mistakes, as everyone does, but his heart is in the right place. He fights to become better than the circumstances he is living in. He is independent and brave, but his voice remains accurately that of a fifteen year old. Riel’s character is also lovable and the two make an excellent pair. The book ends with the mystery of Mike’s mother’s death being solved, but it leaves the reader wanting to read about more adventures of the amazing Mike and Riel.

I liked this book a lot. It had me literally jumping out of my seat at some points. You never know where this book is gonna go next. This book is super unpredictable. You feel like you're the detective when you find new hidden clues on every page. The character development in this story is remarkable. Take Mike for example at the beginning of the story he hates everything about school and teachers but at the end he chooses to live with a teacher so he can continue to go to school. Same with his uncle at the beginning of the story we looked up to him but at the end we see him as somebody who helped cover up the murder of his own mother.

This book and this series was my absolute favorite series as a teenager. I really connected with Mike for some reason, almost feeling as if I knew him personally. This book in particular is my favorite of the series. Even as an adult, it kept me captivated and on the edge of my seat. I read the entire book in two days. I love the characters, the character development, the writing, and the plot.

If you like mystery and interesting books then you might wanna read this. Hit and Run is a Mike and Riel mystery book. In my opinion I think Hit and run is a good book because it has a lot of plot twists and it leaves you thinking on what's gonna happen next. Before you continue reading my book review there a some ***Spoiler Alerts***.
Hit and Run takes place at Mike's house but changes throughout the story. Hit and Run is about a teenage boy who deals with his mothers death and is left under the uncle's custody. Billy likes to party and hang with his friends, he barely pays attention to Mike. Ever since Mike's mother passed he has been misbehaving and getting into trouble quite a bit. Mike's history teacher, Riel is concerned about him, he brings up Mike's mother a lot. Later in the story you find out that Mike gets in trouble with the cops because of his friends actions. Throughout the story you find out that Riel is an ex-cop, and he was one of the cops who took care of his mom's case but didn't find the person who did it.
In my opinion it is a really good book. I think the book is good because it leaves you anxious on what's gonna happen next. The book title relates to the book because his mom was hit by a car and the car took off. Mike acts the way he does because of his mom's pass and his friends actions. I can relate to the character Mike because he feels like the cops didn't do anything about his mom's accident, and I'm pretty sure everyone thinks that when a relative or friend passes away. I was surprised when Mike went along with his friends to steal those cakes from the bakery truck. In the text it says, "Vin approached the truck and peeked inside. I followed at a distance , glancing around to see if anyone was looking. If they were they might think we were planning on grabbing stuff, which we weren't at least I wasn't." " Vin looked around again and before I knew what he was doing, he jumped into the back of the trunk. "Catch" he said, and threw the box at me and Sal and grabbed a box for him and took off running down the alley, halfway down the alley a voice popped in to my head and said "What would your mother say?" It sounded a lot like Riel's voice, I slowed down and threw the box over a fence."
I rate this book a 4 because it was a good book and very interesting because it was a mystery book and kind of upsetting mixed together. I would recommend this book to people who like mystery books. If you wanna know what happens to him throughout the rest of his life I suggest you read the whole series. You never know what might happen next!

What would you have done if you were told that you're mother has died in a hit and run? I would have cry and try to look for the person who had did that horrible thing. The samething happen to this guy and all his time is to try to look for who did and what actually happened.

At first glance 15-year-old Mike McGill seems like a typical smart-aleck and slacker. But there’s more to Mike – who’s under the dubious guardianship of his Uncle Billy since an unknown hit-and-run driver killed his mother – and more to the circumstances of his mother’s death.

In this intensely involving story, Norah McClintock demonstrates her mastery of the psychological mystery genre. Her potent central theme – how frighteningly easy it is to screw up your life from a couple of mistakes and how unstoppable that downward destructive spiral can be – is played out with insight and suspense generated equally from character revelations and plot complications.

Mike’s moving first-person narration sounds authentic, and his characterization deepens as the story unfolds. Behind the attitude and antics, Mike proves to be decent, caring, and well meaning despite lapses. Like most of McClintock’s protagonists, Mike has a personal stake in solving this crime, McClintock tracks Mike’s efforts to find out what really happened the night his mom died.

Mike doesn’t have much of a role model in Billy, but Billy doesn’t like Mike’s friendship with history teacher John Riel, an ex-cop who investigated Mike’s mother’s death, or Riel’s encouragement of Mike’s belief that she may have been murdered. When Mike gets into trouble with the police, his life begins to fall apart. Feeling he’s got nothing to lose, ignoring Billy’s warnings, he persists in his pursuit, seeking out Riel’s help.

In coclution, i thought this was an amazing book because it builds up suspends and makes me feel like I'm actually there!

Hit and Run is the 1st book in A Mike and Riel Mystery. Mike is left in the care of his Uncle Billy following the death of his mother in a hit and run. Billy isn't the best of guardians for a teenage boy.

Billy runs with some doubious friends at best. He often leaves Mike alone.

Two years after his mother's death, Mike is still struggling to find some closure. Why? He is struggling in school. Often failing to do assignments and skipping classes or school.

Enter into the picture..... Mr Riel, the new history teacher. He is on Mike's case about school. Mr. Riel is a mystery. An ex-cop who retired too early after an incident where he didn't backup his partner... or so goes the story.

It is Mr. Riel who gets some of his buddy to follow up on a lead that Mike gave him regarding the night his mother was killed.

Great book for boys 6-8th greade. The protagonist, Mike, is a clean cut guy who is simply trying to figure out things in his life.

Some drinking by Billy and his buddies.

Hit and Run is the first book in the 'Mike and Riel Mysteries'. Mike is a 15 year old boy who lives with his uncle after his mom was killed in a car accident. But his uncle is only ten years older than he is and quite immature, so Mike is basically left on his own. Riel is his history teacher who is also a former cop. Together they discover Mike's mom car accident may not have been an accident at all.

I liked the book, but it had a few flaws. The first was that the mystery part was way too obvious. Really, you could see it coming a mile away. But my biggest issue was that I didn't feel connected to Mike at all. I mean, I liked his voice and it was authentic and everything, but I didn't feel close to him. At times, he was very descriptive (for instance about his relationship with his girlfriend) but not emotional at all. I didn't feel I had access to his head.

Still, boys may feel differently about the book. Languagewise, the book was okay.

Recently I came across a listing online for a large bag of books for sale. It included over 50 middle grade- early young adult books. Most of which were from the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Norah McClintock’s Hit and Run was the first book I pulled from that bag.

This first installment in the Mike and Riel series follows a young teenage boy as he navigates life in the years following his mother’s tragic death. This story instantly felt familiar but, I can’t recall if I’ve read it before or not.

I enjoyed the Toronto setting and the pop culture references from thee time period. As a winner of the Red Maple Award, Hit and Run felt very Canadian. Even the character names i.e,: Riel, McGill etc. were symbolic.

This series is a great introduction to thrillers for the middle grade audience. I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre and I hope to be able to track down book two.

First entry in McClintock's new mystery series featuring main character Mike McGill. Mike has his fair share of problems. His mother was killed by a hit and run driver when he was 11, so he lives with his uncle. His home life is not ideal. His uncle Billy certainly won't win any father of the year awards. He spends more money on booze than food, and doesn't really provide the stable home Mike needs. Mike is not exactly a stellar student, but his new history teacher, Mr. Reil is really on his case. When Mike finds out Mr. Riel is an ex-cop who was involved in the unsolved investigation into his mother's death, it starts a chain of events that just might end with another death. McClintock's books are terrific for reluctant readers, but they are frankly--just good mysteries.
