When I began reading this book, I thought it would be one that would bore me out of my wits. History can be boring, complicated, confrontational and arduous when delving into it. Yet, history is established and cannot be changed no matter how you try to alter its narrative. History is what we stand on, the events that shapes our world, the hatred, and mistakes that makes us learn how to love, the errors of our ways and how to avoid repeating them in the future, the people who fought for what was right and won, the adversities and atrocities that shape our victories, and the conflicts that makes us appreciate peace. Lessons from history.

As comprehensive as this book is about the history and influences that impacted and shaped the United States of America, I can't believe how much the events of the past literally mirrors the political climate, the economy, healthcare issues and advocacy issues (ie. environmental, immigration, wage equality, etc.) that we witness today. On page 511, this statement resonates profoundly:
-The American Constitution has proved to be one of the most lasting frameworks of government in the world. Although it was adopted about 200 years ago, it still works well.-

This book is a good reference guide and textbook for refreshing oneself on the following:
• How democratic institutions have developed since colonial times.
• How a nation of only 13 states on the Atlantic coast expanded westward to the Pacific in less than 75 years.
• What contributions were made to American life by immigrant groups from every continent of the world.
• What policies our government has adopted to maintain U.S. leadership in world affairs.
• How new technologies have transformed American society.

It also sheds light on many historical mentions about the atrocities towards Native Americans, the crusades for women's rights, voting rights, the abolition of slavery, civil rights and the wars/conflicts we were involved in. The Appendix includes "The Declaration of Independence" (We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) and "The Constitution of the United States of America." This book is a great teaching tool that will jumpstart your curiosity into finding out more about the events listed within its pages and the impact of how such events are important today.
