Ben always thought his grandfather's bedtime stories about darklings were fairy tales, but now the sinister creatures have invaded his hometown. It all begins with an eerie windstorm, followed by a series of dark portents and omens. A menacing stranger cloaked in black warns Ben of the evils that will follow the wicked wind, but Ben and his best friend Sara know better than to trust the creepy stranger. What Ben doesn't realize is that he's the last in a long line of magical warriors known as Lightbringers, and it's his destiny to stop the darklings... or die trying.
The only person who knew the truth about Ben was his grandfather, but with the arrival of the darklings he seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Before Ben knows it, half the people in town have gone missing and the rest are trying to kill him. He receives a mysterious package that contains his grandfather's old journal and a crystal pendant. Ben suspects this may be a clue to defeating the darklings. Unfortunately, the journal is encrypted and Ben is running out of time. With Sara's help, Ben must unlock the journal's secrets and find a way to banish the darklings before they destroy the entire town and kill everyone he loves.
But does Ben have the strength to face his greatest fears? If he succeeds, he'll have to sacrifice everything just to survive. If he fails, Ben will not only lose everything he loves, he may also become the thing he fears the most. 128 pages
What reviewers have to say:
5 Stars: I adored reading this book. The characters aren't wafer thin, they have depth and history. The Darkling Wind was a wonderful read, with wonderfully written scenes which pulled you in and made you believe it was truly happening... A great love vs evil story... I'd recommend this book to anyone, young or old. It's a feel good story you won't be able to put down. -Smashwords Review
4 Stars: This is a very well-written, good-versus-evil story that will capture a young reader's imagination. The main character has to deal with both emotional and physical challenges that I expect will make the reader pause and wonder how they would react in those circumstances. I look forward to hearing my daughter's comments after she's finished the story. -Smashwords Review
5 Stars: Highly Enjoyable Read!I HIGHLY recommend this read! I very rarely go online to write reviews... It's certainly a very different story type, nothing typical... it is much more interesting than the Synopsis makes it sound. Please do give it a chance. -Nook Review
5 Stars: Jamie Sedgwick has [proven] to be a first rate writer... that rare ability to combine original and intriguing characters, locations and plot into a work of pure perfection.- Goodreads Review
Jeramy Gates is the author of numerous Amazon lists bestsellers in the categories of Mystery, Thriller, Science Fiction and Fantasy (as Jamie Sedgwick). Jeramy spent his childhood on a ranch in the Montana Rockies, but now lives among the grapevines and redwood groves of northern California with his wife and three children. When traveling, you may encounter Jeramy with his family and their three dingoes, camping in their fifth wheel trailer.
Ben grew up hearing bedtime stories from his grandfather about the Darklings. He assumed they were fairy tales until one day the Darklings invaded his home town. This is the story of how Ben teaches himself, with clues left behind by his grandfather, how to fight the Darklings and their rulers. The fate of his city rests in his hands.
The Darkling Wind was a good little weekend read. I think that the ideal audience for this book is probably early young adult. The majority of the dialog seemed very (for lack of a better word) juvenile to me. However, I liked the idea behind and the concept of this book. I found the subject interesting and fun. I wished that the author would have gone into a bit more detail about the “Light bringer” history.
I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Thank you Jamie Sedgwick for the free autographed copy of the book.
Jamie Sedgwick has shown herself to be a first rate writer in that she has that rare ability to combine original and intriguing characters, locations and plot into a work of pure perfection. As one who has read many, many books- it is so nice to have one come along Sleeps that so -Jamie Sedgwick is a writer to savor!!

~~~~ A wicked wind is blowing this way ~~~~
Ben had always thought his grandfather’s bedtime stories about the darklings were make believe, but now the darklings have invaded his hometown and only Ben can stop them. When a mysterious package arrives containing his grandfathers old journal and a crystal pendant, Ben knows he’s found the way to stop the darklings….
Unfortunately, the journal is encrypted and Ben’s running out of time.
But does Ben have the strength to face his greatest fears? If he succeeds, Ben will have to sacrifice everything just to survive. If he fails, Ben will not only lose everything he loves, he will also become the thing he fears most…
The Darkling Wind is now my third novel of Author Jamie Sedgwick’s that I have had the immense pleasure of reading. Loving each one more, and enjoying each for different reasons of their own. Jamie’s writing style is such a refreshing, relaxing read with a storyline full of intrigue, and characters that come to life as well as keeping you wanting to read that “just one more chapter”… yet knowing you’re not going to be able to stop, with just one more.
Jamie’s books have yet to let me down or left me with the feeling of “eeh, it was just a ok read”, they have always given me such a enjoyable experience.
Ben’s character is very engaging, several times I felt the emotions and or the physical trials that he was dealing with, were those that could be dealt/handled so differently by everyone.. I’d stop and think how exactly I myself would do it, or how my grand kids would react??? *tilts head to side and wonders*
My three eldest are now taking turns reading The Darkling Wind, and are going to do a book report each for their classes. Kind of like their own little reviews. (I love it)
Don’t get me wrong, although this is a fantastic read for adults, it’s very much a VERY SPECTACULAR novel for you teens!!!
If you’ve yet to have the chance to read any of Author Jamie Sedgwick’s books, I think you should give them a try.. You’ll enjoy them all, I know I have. (-;
Great story, well written, twists. This was a very easy read, finished in a few hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and plot. I am more excited to read this book to my young neighbor who is 6 with a higher than usual level of understanding. I also plan to gift this book to my nephew who is 11. If you are looking for a book to gift to a young person, this is a good one. Please don't misunderstand me, this story will approach a young reader with none of the silliness that one would automatically associate with a book directed at the younger generation.
*Good Reads Winner* I am so excited to receive a copy of Darkling Wind! It sounds delightfully spine chilling. I can't wait until it arrives. :)
You know that feeling you get when you read a story that is downright eerie and suspenseful that you become so enthralled with what is going to happen next? This is definitely one of those books that leaves you with wanting more of all of that. The minute I started reading The Darkling Wind, I became so memorized with the story, I found it to be a great page turner. All in all, the author couldn't have done it any better and I found it very well written. A definite read for both children and adults alike!
This was a great story. It is nice to read a story from a kids perspective and feel that the kid is telling it. I would have liked a little more flash back to when the story teller was younger for more of a background. The twists into the end were well done.
I don't like how this book was wrapped up so clean in the end. Like nothing ever happened. Very strange journey to take us on and then magically it was all wiped away.
