No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells

Rate this book
Elly Blair welcomes the chance to escape her ex-fiance and job from hell when Grandma Imelda, ready to retire to sunny Florida, calls for her to take over her little southern cafe.

Elly has no idea her grandmother has baked up magic for the unsuspecting townsfolk for thirty years-and now Grandma Imelda insists that Elly use her own hitherto unsuspected magical powers to carry on the family tradition.

But Elly's new at this stuff. Her dishes don't turn out as full of smidgens of enchantment and dashes of wishes come true as she'd hoped. When handsome customer Rory Covington takes a bite of the wrong burger, he ends up capturing the attention of every woman in town. Elly doesn't know if her feelings for Rory are true or based on her magic gone awry.

Tom Owenton is an investigator the National Organization for Magic sent to look into the magical mishap. Unless Elly can reverse the spell, the cafe will be closed permanently. Tom is more than willing to help Elly out of this magical pickle, but she's not sure she should accept his offer.

Elly only has forty-eight hours to find a way to reverse the spell, or she'll lose the cafe and never discover if her feelings for Rory are real.

Elly Blair has an ex-fiancee and a job that can only be described as "hell" on a daily basis. Her life is about to take an unforseen turn though. Grandma Imelda has decided to retire and wants Elly to take over the running of her cafe.

A more-than-welcome change at the perfect time, Elly really has no idea what she is getting herself into. Who knew that Grandma Imelda had been infusing her baked goods with a little magic for the townfolk? Elly sure didn't.

As Elly learns to use magic, she obviously makes some mistakes. It is in the mistakes that the book takes some humerous turns. Example: Very handsome customer Rory Covington is mistakenly given the wrong burger, magically enhanced for a lonesome someone other, and poor Rory is suddenly in the radar of every girl in town. Elly has already harbored feelings for Rory, and now every other female shares those feelings! Bummer.

Enter another problem, an investigator from the National Organization for Magic, who is sent to see about the mishaps occurring at the cafe. Elly must find a way to reverse her spells or the cafe will be forced to close. The investigator, however, does offer to help Elly, but she wants to try on her own.

A lighthearted magical read.

I’m going to start making up random genres, because some books just don’t fit into the ones already established. I know there’s a whole genre called “cozy” mysteries, and perhaps one called “cozy paranormal mysteries,” but No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells really doesn’t fit the whole cozy theme, because cozy makes me think of quaint, and quaint makes me think of New Englanders wearing sweater vests while sipping tea by a lighthouse. Rose Pressey’s first book in the Mystic Cafe series is more perky than cozy. So there you go, it’s a perky paranormal light romance. That’s my random genre of the week.

In No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells, Elly Blair is thrown into the role of magical cafe keeper after her grandmother decides to retire. This would all be fine and dandy if Elly had any inkling that she could do magic, but that knowledge is thrust upon her at the same time as her new role of chef/owner/manager of Mystic Cafe. Still, she’s nothing if not adaptable, and so she tries to figure out all the magic stuff and make her grandmother proud. Of course, within the first few hours of her new career, things start to go terribly wrong. A magical meal makes it to the wrong customer, and despite an embarrassing attempt on Elly’s part to prevent him from eating it, Rory Covington still manages to get just one bite in, which is all it takes. Suddenly, all the women in town are swooning over him, his ex-girlfriend is stalking him, and even Elly finds herself having feelings for him. Unfortunately, she can’t be sure those feelings aren’t the result of the spell.Meanwhile, Elly’s magical blunder alerts the magical authorities, who swoop in and make her life slightly miserable. Elly has to fix the damage as soon as possible or risk having the cafe shut down forever.

The overall plot was, as I said, pretty perky and cheery, even though things go terribly wrong for Elly several times. It’s a fun read with some light romance, and it did a good job of holding my attention. That said, I did have some issues with the character development. First, there were many times when I actually wanted Elly to suffer some consequences because she just doesn’t listen. She’s told to stop using magic, but goes right ahead and does more anyway. She frets about disappointing her grandmother, but then turns around and does more things that jeopardize everything the famous Imelda worked for. She’s also entirely too understanding. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’m sorry, if what happened to her at the end happened to me, you can bet I would have reacted much differently. I also felt like other characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, especially Elly’s best friend.

The story has good bones though, and Pressey has an easy-going, fun writing style. I think if the subsequent books carry character development a little further, it will be an entertaining series.

I started out liking this book - really, really liking it. It was going to be a four-star book at least. I was laughing in all the right places. And, although I thought it was kind of odd that Elly's grandmother would run off and leave her at the café by herself that quickly, I went along with it for the sake of the story. There is such a thing as "suspension of disbelief."

From that almost stellar beginning, though, things went downhill very quickly. The friend - her best friend - who gets so flustered by a handsome guy (who she sees every day, just looks at as a brother, and tries to fix up with Elly) that she gives him another customer's food (which just happens to be doused with a major love potion).

And, of course, Elly and the dreamboat start dating, but when they're on their first date, she tells him, "Tell me about yourself. I don't know anything." And he says he owns a farm - which is fine, except for the fact that they've already talked about his farm - eight pages earlier. They treat it like it's completely new information, but it's not. And the same sort of thing happens in Elly's conversations with Tom, the magic authority. I just don't understand. It seems that the author couldn't remember what she'd written from one day to the next (which, admittedly, does happen), but she didn't go back to read through it? A better editor would have been able to catch that and fix it.

And then there was that intriguing conversation with the weird drunk guy mumbling about "bad people in town" in the middle of the book. Sadly, it never really seemed to go anywhere - unless he was just referring to Rory's ex, Kim, but she wasn't all that bad, and the way he said it made me expect more. ... Or maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. It was a strange bit of "foreshadowing" that, in my opinion, didn't really work.

Okay, and let's not leave out the absolutely ridiculous ending! Who's Elly going to end up with? The dreamboat she's been obsessed with since Day One and with whom she doesn't really have that much in common, or the magic inspector that she flirts with (and kisses) right in front of dreamboat and shares much more of substance? Guess.

There were some great bits toward the end (as there were in the beginning) that made me smile for all the right reasons, but there were many more parts that had me rolling my eyes and screaming at the computer screen (yes, I did say screaming). So did I like this book? I'm not sure. Yes and no, with a little more emphasis on the "No." If I could give this book two and half stars, I would, but I can't, so I'll just round up for the sake of generosity.

This world makes no sense. Elly finds out about magic when her grandmother decides to retire and wants her to run the café. She doesn't bother explaining much beyond here is the spellbook and don't do anything negative.

Well, Elly finally does a spell and it gets delivered to the wrong person and then the magical investigators show up and say she has 48 to fix it or else. But they don't tell her how. I mean who just expects people to learn magic on their own and not tell them the rules? Not to mention, Elly was an Admin Assistant and is somehow capable of running (including cooking) a café? And when things went wrong Elly wouldn't call her grandmother for advice either.

I just thought the premise was silly and couldn't get past it. Plus it had a love triangle, which I hate. And the villain was just sad.

Cute, light read. This book reminded me a little bit of Garden Spells, but it was a little quirkier, and to be honest, not as well written or as good. Still, a cute read and it was only 2.99 anyway. There were some editing and formatting mistakes, but I think the book was self published so it didn't bother me as much as it usually would have. One of my big problems is that Elly took so damn long to ask for help, and to call her Grandmother. She knew she was in over her head, just ask for help already! I loved Tom (even if he did wink a little too much) and thought that he would have made a better love interest than Rory (who was alright, I guess, if a little boring).

OMG! I CANNOT STOMACH THIS BOOK

This world makes no sense. Elly barely nor and bake, and certainly never had any magic experience, let alone knew it existent. And yet, she had to take over her grandmother's magical cafe on the day she leaving for retirement with barely explain nor trainning, but a magical book and advice to follow the instructions. Of course disaster will sure to follow.

Elly's not sure she can run her grandma's cafe, and that's before she learns about the magic ingredients. That's magic as in spells, and newbie Elly is suddenly in charge of giving the townspeople a helping hand. An order gone wrong, and hottie customer Rory is suddenly every woman's dream come true...but he only has eyes for Elly.

Magical mistakes don't go unnoticed, and soon Elly's got trouble. If she can't fix the spell in 48 hours, the cafe will be closed for good. Now she's got Tom to worry about, an inspector who's watching her every move...and not just the magical ones.

This is a really fun read. It's funny and quirky, the kind of thing that has you curled up on the couch with some good chocolate for company. Elly and her best friend Mary Jane are real women. You could see yourself having coffee at the cafe with them, dishing on all your man problems. Dating someone you work with, dealing with a psycho ex - we've all been there. It's just funnier when Elly does it.

And what men they are! Hot, funny, protective - you could write a romance novel about them if they weren't already in one. Watching them circle each other like territorial dogs, you don't know whether to laugh or get the hose.

It's light, enjoyable - the perfect read when you want to treat yourself to some me time. Now if only we had one of those magical muffins...

Four paws up!

Elly is a girl in a muddle. The first thing that will capture the readers' attention is Elly's ability to make everything seem a bit humorous and real. The characters in this novel feel like people you would walk up to in the street and say hi. The men are caring, diligent, and strong. The women funny, quirky, and crafty. Elly helps out in her grandma's restaurant...and soon she may take over. When one little error occurs, her best friend puts down a dish with a love spell in front of the wrong customer, Elly is under inspection and worrying. Rory, the unfortunate customer, develops an almost comical love for Elly. Elly attempts to right this wrong before it goes to far. This novel is super fast-paced and the reader will truly enjoy it. The novel is light and fun. The characters add depth and help to keep the readers' interest. The plot is imaginative and fun to read about. This novel is terrific for young adults/adults who enjoy romance novels with a touch of magic (no explicit sexual scenes).

A little magic doesn't hurt...right?
Unless the spell goes to a hunky guy it wasn't intended to. Then all bets are off. There are actually two hunky guys, a crazy ex, and a girlfriend anybody would want to be friends with.
Elly had moved off to New York to be with her boyfriend. Her grandma called her home to take over the cafe so she could retire. An offer that she wasn't sure of but that was better than staying in New York with the boyfriend. What grandma left out until the last minute was the magic that she put into the food. The magic that Elly was now suppose to put in the food. With very little instruction, within 24 hours Elly finds herself in trouble.
This was a fun read. It is clean so you do not have to worry about teen reading. Let's face it, even when it is marketed for teens, the book is sometimes more than you want them to read. Not so In Rose Pressey's book. While alluding to normal feelings Mrs. Pressey leaves out the steamy scenes and manages a nice balance.

“This town would fall apart without magic,“ that is the first line in, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells, and the last line is, “After All, Magic Happens.”

The title, No Shoes, No Spells, is a fitting one as the story takes place in Mystic Falls when the heroine, Elly, takes over the Mystic Café from her grandmother. She’s surprised to discover the job includes placing spells on the food to better the lives of the customers with the help of the mystic magic book of spells and magic spices. Then the worst thing that can happen when she serves a magically enhanced cheeseburger… happens.

Since the author, Rose Pressey, has always found the thought of finding answers to the unexplained fascinating, she enjoys writing fun, quirky books with a paranormal twist and No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells certainly fits that description.

This is a sweet romance that is heartwarming, charming and simply magical. I enjoyed it so much and I highly recommend, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells.

This was one of those books that once you started reading, you had to finish. I really enjoyed the author’s voice and style of writing. I was a little thrown off at first at the use of bold type setting, but the more I read, I saw that it was intentional and I liked the quirkiness of it. The lead character, Elly, was funny and inviting and we got to grow with her through her learning experiences life and magic threw at her. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series and I am equally as excited to read some of this author’s other books. Next Up, Rock ‘N Roll is Undead! I can’t wait. I suspect it will be great! I give this book 4 stars.

Not much my style. Kind of boring at first, lots of explanations and way too much telling and not showing. My heart simply wasn't in it. I skimmed a lot. The plot was interesting but didn't grip me. I don't know for sure what I disliked about it all...maybe I simply don't care to know the inner workings of a café or something. The romantic interest for the main character didn't impress me much either. Overall I think the story came pretty much out of nowhere and I felt as lost as the woman from the story when she suddenly owns a café and finds she needs to cook with magic even if she doesn't know how.

When I finished this one, I initially slapped on 4... actually meaning a High 3...
But after a little (a very little) ruminating, it become clear that I had made a typo...
that should be a 3 5/11, not 3 6/11...

Because although this is exactly the type of Cozy I like, that story with interesting situations and characters, it was a little TOO overwritten. TOO cute, TOO contrived, the characters TOO perky, TOO oblivious, the consequences for little things TOO severe.

I'll probably read the next book or two, 'cause I did like this one...

No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells

A delightful, sweet, romantic, magic mystery. Imagine discovering you have magical talents when your grandmother retires to Florida, leaving you her cafe and book of spells and spices. All you have to do is a little spell to help people who are suffering from arthritis, migraines, depressed...little things like that. Life gets really interesting when a burger gets delivered to the wrong person.

I have never been disappointed with a book by Rose Pressey and this book is as good as the rest. I love the magic, the romance and the characters. This book drew me in and kept me hooked until the end. As with other books by this author, I was left with a smile on my face when I was finished. Overall, I loved the book and I look forward to more by this author.

Cute

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest review.
Cute book. Grandmother decides to retire from a mystical cafe, granddaughter takes over & the sparks literally fly. What's a girl to do when a magical burger goes to the wrong customer?

No shoes, no shirt no spells

A fun easy read with chaos thrown in for good measure. Wacky misspells create havoc in the lives of some of the residents. Throw in a hunk, some overseers of magic and you have a delightful story to enjoy, a nice summer read. Glad to be able to review this book and I hope others read and enjoy this book.

Magic comes back to Mystic Hollow in the form of Elly. Yet, she hasn't become comfortable with it. A spell that she casts inadvertently lands on the wrong person causing all kinds of trouble. This is the story of overcoming self-doubt and over obstacles.

Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Tear-jerker. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

A really fun read

The Mystic Cafe is a fun read. It leaves me with a feeling stopping in might be fun, except I fear my imagination might make the reality a disappointment — so I’ll just stay away and live in my world.

I thought this was a cute book although I was a bit confused by how their "magic world" worked. Why can't a spell just be reversed? But I guess if it could be reversed, there would not be a book to read.

New to magic and finding herself the owner of a cafe Elly must undo a magical mistake that is having an effect on the whole town. Enjoyable. Elly has a lot of insecurities that need to be dealt with along with a lot of questions that she can't get straight answers to.
