If you like traveling in time, and the time you like is the mid 1850's in Mid-west USA, then you will enjoy this book. The author wrote of a very different morality and mind-set from today's. Penned in the early 1900's, Alexander was able to reach back into the, for her, recent past and describe it well. Honor, generosity, self-sacrifice, morality, persistence, loyalty, family love are all values that give impetus to the characters. I enjoyed Alexander's descriptive narrative of nature, events and people. There were times I wanted to scream and say "Get a grip! You don't have to do that!" But, the author stayed true to the prevailing mores of the day. Lest you think its all milktoast, no, there are good guys, bad guys, complex personalities and, of course, romance. In the end, not only did I enjoy the journey, this novel gave me much to ponder.
