February 23, 2016I have tried two books by Perini. They were okay, but her style of storytelling is frustrating, so I doubt I will read any more. I like my romantic suspense to be vivid and fast-paced. I want my heroes to live in the NOW, going all out to protect and preserve. I don't like novels composed largely of mental agonizing, guilt tripping, mournful memories, and maudlin discussions of past abuse. That is not how to create a sympathetic character. Even worse is when such maudlin thoughts break up a love scene or an action scene.
Exactly. We don't need to be told a million times about Jazz's fragility in this book, or about Daniel's POW torture (whippings) in The Cradle Conspiracy, or about the hero's guilt-ridden regrets about his father's death in Behind the Lies. Tell me once. I remember. Tell me three times, I shut down.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. It sat next to my nightstand for two weeks before I took the time to pick it up and read it. That was my first mistake. My second mistake was reading it slowly because I didn't want it to end.
In Her Sights is an amazing romantic suspense book that pulled me in under 5 minutes. It was engaging, heartwarming, fast-paced and romantic. It was about overcoming past wrongs and painful secrets, and becoming stronger, better, and more capable together than being something ordinary on your own.
Rest assured, Ms. Perini, I will never again make the mistake of taking so long to read a book you write. Thank you for opening a whole new world of passion and romance, suspense and intrigue to this reader. I'm proud to add In Her Sights to my keeper shelves and recommend it highly to all my friends.

My Review:
This was a fabulous book and surprisingly, a first book by this new author. This book is about Jazz, Jasmine Parker, who is the lead sniper on a SWAT team. The book starts when she is 10 years old, so that as the reader, you know a bit about her history that she has worked diligently to hide and escape from her entire life.
Luke Montgomery is a man from her past. He is an investigative reporter and she left him when she realized that he could never forgive or get past a deception, knowing that she was hiding her entire history from him. But now he has been tasked with writing a series of articles about her and is digging.
The first story features her front and center on the first page after a shot that she took, saved the governor’s young daughter. That first article puts her on someone’s radar that knows her past and wants Jazz to pay.
It’s been two years since Luke and Jazz have been involved, but the sparks are still there for both of them, but the closer Luke gets to Jazz, the more that he realizes that he never really knew her when they were involved two years ago. But as they become closer, the more that Jazz realizes she is putting Luke and all of his family, including his young daughter in danger. That is not an acceptable risk to her so she keeps pushing him away.
Jazz is a really complex character. She has learned methods for how to separate herself mentally from stress and emotion which serves her well as a sniper, but not so well in relationships. She’s overcome a lot in her life to get where she is and through the book, she starts to see all that work crumble which is absolutely devastating for her.
On the other side is Luke. Two years ago, he went after one of his best friends in an investigation with no mercy and that is what scared Jazz away from their relationship. Since then, he has realized his mistakes with the friend and the handling of Jazz. He realizes now that he would always let her deflect his questions rather than getting to know more than the physical side of Jazz.
Both of these people are learning and growing throughout this book, but at the same time, they are going through some amazingly difficult times together. The suspense and the action in the book is phenomenal!
There are a lot of possibilities for the bad guys that keeps you guessing up until almost the very end. The story is fabulous too. I fell in love with these characters and was completely immersed in the outcome of their story, including the side characters. When Gabe (Luke’s younger brother) got hurt…OMG, my family just had to stop talking to me for a few pages. Yes, it really is that good.
This book was so good. I read it over the Thanksgiving holiday, and kept having a hard time pulling myself away from it to interact with my family. It is riveting. It is suspenseful. It is sexy. I adored the entire Montgomery clan and really hope that this new author is already writing the other Montgomery boys stories because they all have some fabulous possibilities.

IN HER SIGHTS is an impressive debut from author Robin Perini. I was immediately drawn into the story and I couldn’t wait to turn the pages to find out what happened next. We are introduced to Jazz Parker, the only female sniper in an elite police unit. She keeps to herself and rarely engages in conversations or activities with the other members of her team. When a team member is critically injured because she misses a target, she feels the contempt and hostility from the rest of the team. She has no one in her corner to defend her except an ex-boyfriend who steps back into her life after a two-year absence. But did Jazz really miss the target or is she being deliberately sabotaged?
The story unfolds revealing more and more of Jazz’s childhood years becomes known. She has spent a decade trying to bury her past because of a horrific secret she’s buried back in her hometown. The problem with secrets though is that no matter how well you think they’re hidden, there’s always a loose end that can come back and haunt you. Could this be what is happening to Jazz or is it a more sinister source? The author does a wonderful job of letting you inside Jazz’s head—gaining insights to her hurts, her fears and more importantly to the love that just won’t die no matter how hard she runs from it.
The pace is excellent and the text flows effortlessly page after page. There is a wonderful cast of characters rounding out the story. Luke Montgomery, the man who has never stopped loving Jazz, provides a great steamy distraction to the heart-pounding suspense. But, Luke isn’t as perfect as he seems. A former army ranger, he too, has his own demons to conquer.
Between trying to figure out the elusive enemy bent on ruining Jazz’s life and the on-again, off-again relationship between her and Luke, there is something for everyone in this book. Highly Recommended.

If I could sum the book up in one word, it would be inconsistent. It's good... It's bad... It's fast paced... It lulls...It builds you up... It let's you down... It strays from the norm...It's cheesy and cliche.
The suspense starts out fairly well played. You get enough of a glimpse of Jazz's childhood to know she had a shit life, but you're still left craving the details of it & how it intertwines with a mystery person out for revenge.
However leading up to Jazz's first confession to Luke, the level of her emotional reclusiveness is completely overplayed and undoubtably overstated within the narrative and dialogue. While the specific details do slowly emerge, the constant monologues and narrative about how emotionally secluded and guarded she is & how her past must remain in the past becomes like a broken record.
^ I get the character trait loud and clear. I get her perceived gravity of her past coming into light in her new life. To make the points as repetitive and frequent as they were, it drowns the story and makes it drag.
Then, when she finally does confess her past to Luke the first time, it's fairly lackluster & anticlimactic, especially considering the suspenseful build-up to it.
The second confession was not only lackluster in relation to how it was built-up and eluded to, it just didn't make logical sense for her character.
^ Why? She's a snipper that legally, justifiably kills people and has absolutely no moral qualms about doing so. Yet, she views a self defense incident from her childhood as murder? Wtf? So, yeah, that's not logical for her character any more than it would be logical to have a Navy SEAL character say that he loves the Navy but hates America.
The curtains finally come up on the who and why Jazz and Gabe have been targeted. Ehhh... It's like a parent promising you a trip to 'an amusement park' but actually bringing you to a broken down playground with a solitary rusted out swing and saying, "amuse yourself."
^ I'm supposed to buy that the villain waited almost two decades to seek out revenge? Why now? How'd this person find her after she changed her name and expunged her records? If the villain was just nutso, then the revenge wouldn't have happened decades later. And, without the nutso excuse, then the reasoning behind the revenge is weak sauce!
The plot has entirely too many holes.
The plot has too many lose ends....
Mob goons getting killed, for example, wouldn't just equate to the mob saying, "oh, well... We tried. Let's call it a day and leave this nice family to a HEA."
Eliciting Emotions
Hitting the target emotionally with this book is 50/50.
There are some scenes that seem to jerk the reader's emotions out effortlessly.
I felt the little girl's pain and guilt watching her mom die - target hit! The hospital scene with his daughter giving away her comfort stuffed animal to Jazz - target hit!
Yet, at other times, particularly action sequences, the author missed the emotional mark by a mile.
I didn't feel the emotional gravity of Gabe being shot (ironic miss.) I didn't feel the racing heartbeat of danger when she and Luke were being shot at. While a sad plight in life, I didn't feelthe degree of sadness and empathy I should've felt for Jazz when she confessed (both times) her childhood to Luke. When a bomb goes off with a kid in the path, I'm just reading along trying to finish the shit.
Unlike a lot of books, the main problem here isn't the content.... It's how, when, and the context of presentation. The content itself isn't that bad. The writing style, however, is like sandpaper.
Characters
The characters aren't TSTL or jerks. The shell character bios are actually pretty unique- an orphan turned snipper and a Ranger turned reporter.
BUT...
I just didn't connect with them. I never felt like I was getting anything other than an exterior bravado.
The incessant self-deprecation was annoying. The back and forth of 'it's all my fault' by her and reciprocating 'no, it's all my fault' by him was annoying.
All the inner thoughts the two had about each other were either trust related or sexual. For f's sake his brother is on his death bed and these two are out in the hospital parking lot making out and musing about the lust of old times vs future trust issues. So, even the romantic connection was just off. Then, all of a sudden the relationship just does a complete 180 turn at the end to some cheesy 'be my mommy" stuff that felt forced.
I feel like I was dropped into this story midstream. They dated for 6 months and then were apart for two years before the book actually begins the storyline. There is a story with his ex and his child that's backdrop here. There is drama over a previous conspiracy involving one of his friends. Basically, all the bits and pieces of subtext here make this feel like a sequel vs a first pub.
Overall
Meh, meh, meh. Such a frustrating read that I just kept wishing would give me something, anything to savor. But, no matter how much you look at that apple in the fridge and wish it was a fudge brownie....yeah!

This was an amazing and very suspenseful story. I couldn't put it down! Luckily, I picked this up on a Friday evening because it was 1:30 AM before I hit the final page and let out a sigh of relief. This was an extremely fast-paced romantic suspense novel (with a very heavy emphasis on the suspense).
Jazz Parker has reinvented herself after a horrible childhood as the daughter of drunken prostitute who was beaten to death by one of her clients. This same client came back the next morning to beat and rape 10-year-old Jazz and she managed to kill him with the baseball bat that she was supposed to use to defend her mother. She is guilt-stricken because she was unable to protect her mother. After years bouncing around the foster care system, she finds herself fifteen and on the streets trying to survive. She is rescued by a friendly sheriff who she is very reluctant to trust because of her previous experience.
Jazz changes her name, has her juvenile record expunged, and starts a new life as a police officer herself. When the story begins she is the only female SWAT sniper for her county. She is part of the SWAT team but holds herself aloof from her colleagues because of real trust issues. She is under investigation by Internal Affairs in the person of the spoiled son of the County Sheriff who was beaten out for the SWAT team by her. He is out to get her and, since she hasn't tried to be part of the team, her teammates aren't on her side.
Enter Luke Montgomery. He is a former Army Ranger turned investigative reporter. He is also Jazz's former lover. She walked away when it looked like he was getting too close to her secrets. Luke is a very black and white sort of guy. He is determined to find and report the truth no matter who it hurts. He is currently investigating corruption in the police department. One of his suspects is the officer who has targeted Jazz.
When Jazz and Luke meet again, sparks fly. Neither has gotten over the other but both still have the same reservations. He knows she is lying to him by not talking about her past; she is still intent on keeping her past a secret. Both of them have trust issues. His are because he has been betrayed before by colleagues. Hers are because of her childhood. Otherwise, Luke is part of a large and loving family that is very supportive of him. One of his brothers is Jazz's only friend on the SWAT team. Luke is also the father of an adorable three-year-old daughter. He didn't know she existed until his former girlfriend died. She had left him because he was so determined to put himself in danger doing his investigations which certainly didn't help with his trust issues.
Jazz has also become the target of someone from her past who wants revenge on her. At first, the two cases seems separate but soon it looks like Jazz's enemies and Luke's corrupt cops are getting together. Luke and Jazz have to solve both problems before they can work on their relationship.
The story was an excellent, page-turner. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good romantic suspense novel.

Robin Perini's
In Her Sights
has a great premise: female heroine is a sniper for a SWAT team. Her ex (and brother of one of her fellow SWAT team members) is an investigative reporter looking into possible corruption in the police department she works for. Add in a slightly trope-y bad childhood for our girl, Jazz (Jasmine when she's in the arms of her man, natch) Parker that she'd prefer to keep hidden and you have all the ingredients for a thrill-packed romantic suspense novel.
One would hope.
Unfortunately, Perini relies too much on the plot here and not enough on her characters. From the first time Jasmine and her ex, former Army Ranger turned investigative reporter Luke Montgomery, we are told she can't think of anything else but touching him. This happens when she's angry with him for singling her out for a newspaper feature after killing a kidnapper in a hostage situation (in a front page feature), when they are both upset about his brother being injured in the line of duty, etc. In other words, all the time. It's like the reader is told so often how much they are attracted to each other and how their relationship really isn't over for either one of them that it MUST be true.
Right?
Unfortunately, the characters aren't given enough room with all this lusting all the time to develop past that. I get that Jasmine loves Luke's family, but not why she loves him, because there's never really any development of the characters. The plot itself is enough to keep the story moving, but I didn't really care enough about the characters to worry about how it ended for them; in fact, I had to double-check on their names to write the review.
One would hope.

From the first time Jasmine and her ex, former Army Ranger turned investigative reporter Luke Montgomery, we are told she can't think of anything else but touching him. This happens when she's angry with him for singling her out for a newspaper feature after killing a kidnapper in a hostage situation (in a front page feature), when they are both upset about his brother being injured in the line of duty, etc. In other words, all the time. It's like the reader is told so often how much they are attracted to each other and how their relationship really isn't over for either one of them that it MUST be true.
Right?
Unfortunately, the characters aren't given enough room with all this lusting all the time to develop past that. I get that Jasmine loves Luke's family, but not why she loves him, because there's never really any development of the characters. The plot itself is enough to keep the story moving, but I didn't really care enough about the characters to worry about how it ended for them; in fact, I had to double-check on their names to write the review.

Jasmine "Jazz" Parker takes those words to heart and lets them define who she has become as an adult. She is Jefferson County SWAT's only female sniper and refuses to let anyone get close to her. She is the best shot with the sniper riffle and would protect her team and the innocents with her life but keeps to herself personally.
Luke Montgomery is an ex-Army Ranger, who has now become an investigative reporter. He comes from a large family who are all in one form or another in law enforcement or the military. He also had recently found out he had a daughter when the girl's mother died. He and Jazz had a hot affair for a while until things go to emotional for Jazz and she just walked away.
There are two intersecting suspense stories going on at once - One is someone is out to ruin Jazz's career with SWAT and the other is a corruption story within the mob with possible ties to the police department that Luke is writing. These two things put both Jazz and Luke and his family in danger.
When we first meet Jazz she is a tough as nails SWAT sniper but as the story unfolds we find out about all the horrible things that happened to her as a child and with everything that is going on her wall that she had erected to protect herself comes crumbling down.
I liked all the characters in this book. I hope that the author plans to write about the rest of the Montgomery siblings in the future.

I enjoyed the story, I really did.
The reason why this did not quite make the four star mark for me was because I got soooo sick of the constant mental torture to be in bed with each other. It's like EVERY TIME they saw each other they thought about how much they wanted to kiss each other, or jump in the sack with each other. Even when his brother was in the HOSPITAL, that's what he was thinking about!!
We know that they have a thing for each other, but damn, it did not have to get shoved down our throats so much and so often???.
Other than that, like I said, the story was good and the end was satisfying...if not a tad predictable.

Very good start to series
This book is about Jazz and Luke reconnecting after a couple of years apart. It's a convoluted story thats hard to tell for sure who the bad cops are and who the lady is that's after Jazz. Very well written.

Action packed from the get go.
The low down: Jazz Parker is a take no dirt from anyone female sniper on SWAT. She's the only woman and she's got a lot to prove. She's somewhat ostracized from the team because of her sex and the brick wall she has built around herself. That wall is there for a reason though. She's got a secret past and identity she ran away from, or thought she did.
Luke almost knocked down her defenses once so she left him. Luke is former military and gets to the bottom of things. He ends right smack in the middle of a revenge plot that's main focus is Jazz.
So what we end up with: Dirty cops, snipers, slashed up trucks, kidnapped girls, a family and group of brothers placed in danger, a sordid past coming up again and again, and lots of butter rum lifesavers as the heroine sucks on them or reaches for them constantly. (A minor irritation.)
I thought I had it all figured out but apparently not. I figured it out for real in the last quarter.. A good yarn. The sex was good, but considering the hero had a box of condoms next to the butter rum lifesavers, why weren't they using them? She's a SWAT sniper. Getting pregnant probably isn't a good idea.
Also found myself rolling my eyes at the super sweet little girl. Gimme a break. The whole world doting on her, all her preciousness. Thought the ending was over sappy, but overall it's a good, action packed read with a tough as nails heroine.

wow love every minute of this book.i won this book in give away on godreads and i gt it on friday and read the prology just that and i could not stop until 2 in the morning and went to sleep only because i work the next day i could not put it down it was that good, the plot i like themistery and i cry a lot butis because Jazz is truly a character that has gone trow hell and come on top and she is a fighter i love that she is so strong but at the same time we see that she is still scare. she is a truly character that would inspired you. and Luke well luke is everything i like in my male character' strong' protetive and sexy as hell.
i love reading this story getting to know each character and dying to read more about them. for a first book i think the author did a great job i could not put down this sense the momenti got it. is defenetly a most read but i want more please please do another book with this character i want to see there happy ending plus i love Joy shesper cute.

Perini is a decent storyteller. Unfortunately, she doesn't understand the use of POV and her headhopping from character to character--sometimes in the same paragraph--really detracts from the flow of the story. That being said, this book was well plotted, for the most part and kept me turning pages. I figured out who the "bad guy" was about 2/3rds of the way through, though.
Jazz is a fairly solid protagonist, but both she and her boyfriend, Luke, do way too much soul-searching. I got it in the first couple of chapters that Jazz was damaged from her childhood. It didn't really add anything for the author to have her engage in continued self-doubts/brow-beating through the whole book. I hadn't forgotten how fragile she is inside.
Would I read another of Perini's books? Yes, I think I would.

I really enjoyed this. A fast-paced romantic suspense story about sniper Jasmine "Jazz" Parker, her former lover Luke, and the secrets that both divide and reunite them. Jazz is a strong heroine who fought her way out of a tough childhood and onto the SWAT team. When an Internal Affairs officer attempts to bring corruption charges against her and long dead secrets from a troubled past come back to haunt her, Jazz is forced to turn to Luke, and ex-army ranger turned reporter and former lover to prevent everything she has worked for from falling apart. An entertaining read with likable characters, I would recommend it.

A well written suspense story. Glad that Luke was stubborn and did not want to let Jasmine go, a second time. A female sniper- cool. I love stories that involve woman snipers, SWAT, Navy Seals, CIA's. They seem to give the female such strength and a strong backbone. Rapunzel and the wicked witch- priceless.

In Her Sights is a fast paced, action packed read. The heroine is tough--No whiney damsel-in-distress here--and the hero is to die for sexy. If you’re a fan of kick-butt romantic suspense, then this is the read for you!

I'm not sure which is stronger, the emotion or the suspense. This book is exploding with ripping action and nail-biting tension. But I felt every ache in Jazz's heart as well. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I can't wait to read another book from Robin Perini.

I loved this book! Having the heroine be a police sniper caught my attention, and I must say I was not disappointed. It was a well written, fast paced, romantic suspense thriller. I am very much looking forward to this author's next book.

I’ll start off by saying, I get this is a romance. But if you’re going to write your novels in a specific setting, maybe do a teensy bit of research of how things work in said world. I can easily overlook a few things here and there (usually by pretending I didn’t read it the way it’s written), but it’s literally the entire book. The premise of the book is that she lied about personal information, but somehow passed a background investigation to get hired at a police department with no issues. Must have been the most inept background investigator ever. Not to mention the book ignores the whole investigative process that occurs after an officer involved shooting. Screw the standard of investigating if the shoot is justified or the psych evaluation to make sure that the officer is good to go, just hit the streets for the next call. And rinse and repeat at a ridiculous rate, even for a cop working in the busiest areas. Not to mention a slew of other things such as the MC being the single sniper on a swat team, an internal affairs investigator investigating his own claims (that’s absolutely not how IA works that the person investigating the complaint is the same person who has the main complaint - hopefully I don’t have to explain why that would be seen as a conflict of interest), IA is suddenly investigating why the sniper missed a shot at a suspect, indicating they’ll be in major trouble for it (not going to even start about that one), and the MMC being all up in everybody’s business on police scenes, to include riding in a medical helicopter with a patient. Which would not be allowed even on an ambulance, let alone a helicopter that, for anyone who has seen one, has barely enough room for the patient’s cot, the medic, and the pilot.
There’s more, but this is already long enough even though this review only covers about the first 30% of the book. If being realistic does not bother you whatsoever and you’re just here for the romance, this may be up your alley still. Otherwise, I’ll stick with books where authors actually do a little bit of research on a topic before writing about it.

This story started out OK. I mean even the plot sounded OK as well.
But as the story progressed, I found myself disliking the characters and the story more and more.
The building of the suspense, while good, the announcement felt more like 'meh, here it is'.
I found the buildup to the villain, pointless. Basically, it is something who has waited two decades to have her revenge. There is no indication or mention of her in the heroine's past for us to make any indication, and the villain's introduction just simply says 'here she is, randomly out of nowhere!" On top of that, how did this person, who later shows to be mentally unstable, find a way through the legal system (which even the officer she seduced) have no way of getting the records, without a lawyer of sorts or to break the law a hacker to hack into the system to get the information. Another annoyance was when the villain kidnaps the hero's daughter and asks the heroine to remember the villain's favourite colour, one which the hero practically begs the heroine to name, despite the fact that the heroine doesn't remember. I mean honestly, who remembers things that well from their own childhood?
I basically forced myself to finish this book, as I'm one of those sorts of people who will not leave something half done. And honestly, I wished I was, as reading this was a complete waste of my time, time that I want back.

Luke Montgomery, single father and journalist is investigating corruption within the police department and he is Jazz's ex-boyfriend. This situation starts the trouble for Jazz when Luke puts an article about Jazz on the front page of the local paper.
Between dirty cops, internal affairs investigations, a crazy cop killer, arsonist and kidnapper Jazz goes from being up for a promotion to being suspended and accused of murder of fellow cops. The emotional revelations about her childhood, the faith of Luke in her and her training keep the killer In Her Sights.
I loved Joy and how she acted like a typical inquiring three-year-old and added a light touch to the story with her openness and unique child's view point of life.
In Her Sights offered a mystery, romance, humor and sweetness from a child for a great story.

I really liked this book, but I wanted it to be longer.
I really liked how this book was written when it comes to the plot. You find out pieces of Jasmine’s past throughout the book, and at the same time you slowly see more scenes told from the killer’s POV and find out more about them. However, due to the nature of the plot, you don’t see much of Jasmine doing her job, and the story Luke was investigating wasn’t finished either.
I liked Jasmine and Luke, but I wanted to see more scenes at the end, or before things got so hectic, showing their relationship. I liked how clearly it was shown that Jasmine and Luke had a past.
There were some side characters, but I wanted to see more scenes with them, and how Jasmine and Luke would interact with them, especially Luke’s family.

Luke is in the middle of his own investigation for a story...corruption in the sheriff’s dept. When someone starts threatening Jazz and seems to be setting her up, Luke steps in to help. The pair team up to solve who is behind Jazz’s stalking as well as find the dirty cop. Will they get out off this investigation alive? Lots of twists and turns and you would never guess the identity of the bad guy. Fantastic book...loved the HEA.

She hid her last inadequacies from the men and women she worked with, but after a spectacular shot she gains notoriety, which she did not want. She had not forgotten the things that happened when she was a child.
Then they returned and they brought the past with them. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
